Years ago I went to Calvins with a Kate Spade watch that needed links removed and they were happy to oblige. So I don't know the review that says that Calvins won't repair jewelry that wasn't purchased there. Last week I went in with a gemstone ring (*not* purchased from Calvins) that I wanted made into a necklace and they were happy to do it for me. I paid for the repair and a gold chain. When I went to pick it up, it was not what I asked for, but when I explained what I had actually wanted and clarified my thoughts, they fixed it for me very quickly. The woman helping me, Kathleen, was very sweet and I appreciated that she wanted to make sure I was happy before I left the store the second time. My piece wasn't a big-ticket item like their engagement rings or vintage jewelry, but they treated me with respect anyway. My request might have been less expensive at a different store (and they turned down my request to melt down another piece of mine to make a ring, because they don't do that in-house) but their customer service is top notch. read more

When my fiancé and I had first started ring shopping, we stopped by Jared's and Tiffany's. Unfortunately, these were both extremely negative experiences. At Jared's, the sales associate flat out told me that six prong rings are ugly and that she would never recommend them. After we had picked out one diamond, a different associate then tried to up sell a much more expensive one and pushed us to make a purchase the same day. She got upset when we explained we had barely started shopping and wanted to take our time to look around some more. Absolutely horrible. At Tiffany's, the sales associate scoffed at us when we explained that we wanted a lab-made diamond for ethical reasons. They tried to give us a lecture on how natural diamonds are superior and that we basically weren't worth their time. Incredibly discouraging and stressful! Coming into Calvin's was like a breath of fresh air. We met with Melissa who made us feel so comfortable. At no point did we feel pressured into buying something we would not be happy with. We even came back a second time. She was patient, professional, and responsive to all of our questions. Melissa helped us to design our own one-of-a-kind engagement ring. My fiancé took it upon himself to finalize everything without my knowledge and worked with Melissa behind the scenes to create a beautiful diamond ring for the proposal. What a special surprise! A big thank you to Melissa for making this such a positive experience for us. Me and My boyfriend came here to look for engagement rings, and felt very taken care of. They put a lot of care and time into crafting a once in a lifetime (hopefully) experience. It's not every day that you go engagement ring shopping! This was our first stop on our hunt for the perfect ring, and I felt in good hands to make some important decisions with Ashley! She stepped us through the process of picking a stone cut, setting, and helped us pick a diamond. I found the shop was well stocked with marvelous pieces, and am sure that with Ashley's help you can find the engagement ring of your dreams. The only reason that I give them 4 stars instead of 5 is that the rings that I was given to try on, all the stones were HUGE. I love that (who doesn't want a Disney princess worthy ring, after all?) , and I wish I had a 15k budget, but I do not. They were not as much focused on budget as shock factor. I get it. This is a business, and they are trying to make money. But I think showing 2 ct. rings at first glance, when you haven't talked budget, is a bit of an overstep. I had mentioned that I never bought jewelry before, and I think someone who has never sized a diamond before might have been caught MORE off guard with the price. There is little you can do once the stone is already on your finger and you are in love with it. Once I mentioned the stones were huge, she was more then willing to show me smaller stones. My fiance chose Calvin's to find my perfect engagement ring. He proposed at the end of July and after one month of wearing the ring, I noticed it had bent to the point where it was tough to take off my finger. We went straight into Calvin's to see what is going on and what they can do to fix it, well Marc immediately blamed me saying it was clearly something I did to do this (even though I hadn't done anything that would create this type of issue and I kept telling him that) He then brought out the same band and asked my fiance to squeeze it since the platinum is so strong and it is impossible (oh just wait). That day they offered to fix it for free and the next day we picked it up and it looked good as new. FOUR days later, it started to bend again and again I did not do anything to cause this....no weight lifting like Marc insisted. Well my fiance is now pissed that clearly something is wrong with the band so he goes it again and this time he squeezes my band in front of Marc and guess what it bent so his original comment was wrong and he then claimed that he had never seen this before which could be true but the fact that he kept pushing that it was something I did instead of potentially a problem with the ring didn't sit well with me or my fiance since he should be all about customer service especially since the ring was very new and my fiance spent a lot of money on it. They offered to fix it again, but at this point why would we bother after they did it once and didn't really fix the problem clearly. My fiance asked to speak to the owner who was very helpful in getting us a refund to the band, but I did not love our experience with Marc and his lack of help and empathy toward the situation. We are now getting a band made from somewhere else, but just wanted to put our situation out there. We appreciated how the owner handled things, but will be taking our business elsewhere in the future. read more

As we approached our 25th anniversary my husband and I both needed our wedding rings resized. His has a pattern we wanted to be sure was preserved and in addition to resizing mine I needed the setting on the diamond repaired and wanted to have a second band soldered onto it. We selected Calvin's because they are local, family owned, and have a goldsmith on site. Although they had a sign up stating an appointment was needed they said that wasn't needed for resizing and provided us with prompt customer service when we dropped off the rings. The goldsmith spoke to us both about the work to confirm everything was done to our satisfaction and recommended lowering the diamond on my ring as it was sitting too high in it's original setting. They originally indicated it could be as long as a week and a half to get the work done but they had it completed within four days. They did a great job with both rings. Mine in particular looks like a whole new ring. We couldn't be more pleased and highly recommend them. read more

I went to Calvin's to get a custom Moissanite engagement ring made, and have nothing but praise for Calvin Jr and the entire family who helped me pop the question. Calvin Jr and his mother worked with me on the design, Calvin Sr works in the back, and even his sister greets you at the front counter on your way in! We purchased my wife's custom engagement ring, custom wedding band and my wedding band at Calvin's and Marc and the entire Calvin's team were tremendous throughout the entire process. From start to finish, Marc was warm, friendly and engaging. He was able to work with us on our visions for each ring but also work within our budget. I did not know the first thing about ring shopping but was always cautious as I have heard horror stories about people getting "ripped off". From the moment I stepped into Calvin's I knew I was in the right place. We spent a good deal of time talking about my vision, my wife's preferences (she was not with me, but shared some examples she found online for inspiration), my budget and then he broke down every element of a diamond. Before even looking at rings, Marc took the time to get to know me which helped me to feel comfortable in asking questions and feeling good about any decision I made. We decided on a custom engagement ring and Marc was able to get the team to build a CAD design so I could approve the drawing before completing payment for the ring. This is not my typical jewelry source: glittering precious stones, unlike the affordable, funky glass and painted ceramic ear-danglies from my favorite local artists. This is also local, but it's eyeball-gouging blindness, a shiny display of delicate items I usually do my best to avoid. My reputation of losing jewelry was established at an early age; it's my accidental motto. When we walked in, it became evident that there had already been... discussions. The diamond expert, Katherine, greeted the lovebutton like they knew each other. This was not just Saturday-morning perusing. I started sweating, which coincided nicely with Katherine's offer for a Calvin's-branded water bottle. Hallelujah. I was asked lots of questions, and my responses were essentially useless. Calvin's is a local jewelry store but be ready to have more of a "high-class" experience. I made my first jewelry purchase here, an engagement ring, but I have to say I was pretty intimidated at first. The store is rather large inside with many showcases with sparkling jewelries. There's always a security guard at the door. Everyone is nicely dressed and as a graduate student with a limited budget, I felt out of place. However, my overall experience was a positive one. I was helped by Jackie (Calvin's wife) all the way through and she stepped me through designing a beautiful custom ring that fit my budget. Just to provide some basic context, I picked out the diamond and the band separately. Afterwards, I had the band modified to include some smaller diamonds on the side. I had exactly 2 weeks and Calvin's finished everything within a week and half, 3 days before the proposal. So let's look at each component individually. DIAMONDS: Having done my research and learning from friends and professionals, I had a pretty good sense of how diamond purchasing worked. I was looking for a smaller diamond but definitely GIA certified. I probably could have gotten a diamond at a cheaper price online but I felt uneasy with that process. But in terms of buying a diamond locally in the Austin area, I can confidently say that Calvin's will offer you the best prices. Trust me, I've looked around and compared. This is assuming you know the specs of the diamond you're looking for. I actually chose a diamond on my first visit and changed it later to a smaller one with better specs. Jackie was very patient with me while handling these changes. BANDS: Calvin's has a good selection of bands, include many designer brands, but they are WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. I knew I wanted a platinum band but the bands here are about 30~50% more expansive than other local stores, even on the plain ones. Because of my budget constraint, I chose a simpler (but unique) band and customized the sides to include some smaller diamonds. In total, it cost a little less than a pre-made band. If I wasn't on a time crunch, I would have bought the band elsewhere. I even took my fiance (now wife) back here to look for wedding bands after the proposal but once again, they were just way out of our budget. Overall, Calvin's is definitely one of the top jewelry stores in Austin, hands down. That's why I decided to purchase the engagement ring here after all my research. But just be ready to spend a little more than other local jewelers (but not anywhere close to other "well-known" stores such as Tiffany Co. and Jared). Jackie was also very patient and not pushy throughout the entire process. In the end, the ring came out nicely and it was also appraised at a much higher price than what I paid for (mostly b/c of the diamond). Knocked off 1 star due to the price. Lastly, if you're planning to propose discretely, you might want to buy a smaller ring box yourself. The ring box that came with the ring purchase was huge and impossible to hide! read more

I came here to gloat even more about the customer service here. Calvin's will bend over backwards to please you and work with you. Genuinely because they want to. Every time I come here (which is usually every couple of months at least to get my rings cleaned), they're amazing. They automatically make you feel VIP when you walk through the doors. I know Calvin's wants to make me happy. I know Calvin's always treats me like VIP for the most minor things. I know I can count on Calvin's to make all their customers feel satisfied. My most recent experience here was I went to get my engagement ring re-sized and both rings cleaned. I was told because we had to go up 1/2 a size, they probably wouldn't have it for a few days. Well, Calvin himself walks out and hears me talking about how I have a party tonight and if for sooooooome slight reason it can be ready by 4p that would be amazing. I was bummed I wouldn't have it for a few days, but I understood. I didn't make a big deal out of it at all. Anyway, so Calvin overheard me and tells me he will have it back within only 2 hours! I teared up because I was so happy w the turnaround time he was promising.I hate not having my wedding band or engagement ring. He calls me only an hour later to tell me he has my ring done. BOOM! That's how you do it folks! You don't only bend over backwards for customers IF they make a stink about something. You do it because you want to truly make the customer happy. I wish at the bottom of my heart that I could give more than 5 stars, because they deserve it. I've come here twice so far: to help my fiancé--boyfriend at the time--gain insight on which ring styles I might like and several months later to resize my ring. When looking around, we went pretty much everywhere around Austin, from high-end luxury jewelers to big chain and affordable jewelers to local Austin-based jewelers. Our last store we visited was Calvin's and I wish I came here earlier because no other store came close to the experience we had when at Calvin's. Here's what my experience was like: FIRST IMPRESSION - Calvin's has a very "home-y" feel. The nature of the store and the workers make you feel comfortable. When you walk in, workers will be ready to serve you with whatever you need. You'll be greeted with coffee, water, champagne--whatever you want! My favorite part is being greeted by a sweet dog (if you don't like dogs, you don't have to worry either, the dog mind's his own business). WORKERS - Everyone here is so extremely patient and kind. I went around in circles, not sure what kind of ring I wanted, but they seemed to know me better than myself and brought out the rings that ended up being exactly what I was looking for! Don't worry if you're walking in with no background knowledge of rings because you will be in good hands throughout every step of the way. When I asked about the 4 C's on the brochure they handed me, they even brought out a real diamond and magnifying glass for me to better inspect with. I appreciated that the workers were not pushy and offered honest opinions when necessary. I can wholeheartedly say that Calvin's goal is to make people's days better, not simply sell rings. When my fiancé picked up his ring, Calvin himself (the man who sets the diamonds) made the effort to come out and say congratulations to him. When I came in to resize my ring several months later (more info below), Calvin came out to meet me too, and to make sure I knew to never hesitate if there's anything more they can do for me! It's impossible to be in a bad mood when you're around the workers at Calvin's :) COMMUNICATION - Communication to me is one of the most important things, especially if you're getting ready to invest a lot of money on monumental moment in were life. Once we were past the "explore" phase and were ready to continue the process, Calvin's made everything as simple as possible. Throughout every step of the way, Jack (who sadly isn't here anymore) and Calvin Jr. was thorough in communicating with both me and my fiancé . I appreciated that he gave me his honest thoughts in guiding us to find the right ring for me. Both Jack and Calvin Jr. are truly kind people who cared about our special moment more than the purchasing of the ring itself. It's comforting to know that they are only a text away whenever I have a question. To me, my fiancé and I aren't customers who "went" to Calvin's. We're valued customers who go to Calvin's. They'll always be there for me and I am so thankful for them! PRICING - Since I was in the dark with this part, I can't comment thoroughly on this. But from what my fiancé said, Calvin Jr. found him the absolute best ring possible with the given budget. My fiancé was actually surprised he was able to get such an excellent ring for the price he paid. He also said that the price they offered was very competitive and that he wouldn't have been able to get such a quality ring for that price anywhere else in Austin. RESIZING AND POLISHING: Calvin's understands that the ring might not initially be the right fit. If your ring is the wrong size, your first resizing is on them! So I I came in (walk-in) to downsize my ring by half a size. I requested to see if I could pick up my ring on the same day since I had to leave town. I felt bad to ask Calvin if he could possibly squeeze me in, but he was more than happy happy to work with me. Within the hour, my ring was resized, cleaned, and polished to perfection. On top of the free resizing, they do complimentary cleaning and polishing WHENEVER you'd like. I regularly clean my engagement ring with the solution I have at home, but Calvin's makes it shine like the sun. I was suprised yesterday when the man of my dreams got down on one knee and asked me to marry him and presented me with the perfect ring! The only problem was it was a bit to big, I of course like any girl that has just gotten engaged wanted to show it off to my friends and family but was deathly afraid of loosing it! We went by Calvin's hoping they could put a clip or something of that nature on in the mean time so I could show it off before having it resized.
