Eating pizza in the midwest INCLUDES a long wait time because they make it fresh on the spot when you order it. So expect a wait! Playing table games or good conversation is what is usually done during this time because spending time with your family is PART OF THE EXPERIENCE. 3) Chicago-style pizza is often referred to as "pie" because it's just as deep as an actual pie. Also, the sauce is ON TOP of the pizza, while the "toppings" are the inside. I have been waiting forever to get a pizza from here! They said it was "Chicago-style", but if you've ever eaten pizza in Chicago, you know it truly is a style all its own, so I was anxious to see if their claim is accurate. Went in there tonight and was told that it would be about an hour for a deep dish. The waitress was friendly. I asked her when would be the best time to get a deep dish and she says it always takes 40-45 minutes and you can call ahead and order even if you want to eat in the restaurant. I said well that's funny because we did call before and no one picked up the phone and couldn't leave a voicemail because the mailbox was full. She went on to talk about the hostess and her not doing her job or why they even have a hostess but not her problem. Anyways, so we don't want to wait that long so we get sandwiches and fries instead. Still took an hour to get our food and our sandwiches were cold. Fries were hot but extremely salty. If we had known that the food we had ordered was going to take just as long for the deep dish then I would have ordered that instead or at least give me the option to leave. Ordered cheese sticks, a kids pepperoni pizza and a large pizza. The cheese sticks came out and then the 45 minute for the pizza. There were only four other people in the restaurant eating. My kids sized pepperoni pizza just had one pepperoni on it. We found it comical and the waitress was nice enough to take it back and put more pepperonis on it. The pizza had so much cheese on it. So. It's definitely homemade sauce and it's good sauce. Good stringy cheese. But I guess maybe I'm just not as big a fan of authentic deep dish as I thought? My first time having the sauce on top, it wasn't anything spectacular to me. The salad was definitely not a $6.99 side salad. I might have been okay with $4 because of the toppings but the blue cheese in a packet was room temp and the salad was tiny. The pizza was heavy, like they definitely put a lot into the large, at first the box seemed small but it's hefty. All in all I probably won't be back. Just not anything special, to me. Waitress has one job...to put your order in. She forgot to put our order for deep dish pizza in and didn't realize it until 1.5 hours later. By that time it was almost 8pm and we didn't want to wait even longer. Two waitresses working and yes there were other customer but they seemed to be busy without actually doing anything. None of the tables got cleared when people left, and you had to flagged them down to get refills on drinks. On Christmas Eve I stopped in for a beer with my husband and placed an order to eat some things there, but also got some food to-go. The food we had there tasted fine, but it came out about 20 minutes apart from each other (it was a hot dog and mozzarella sticks) When the to go food came I checked the salad (luckily) and the box wasn't even full (it's $12 for the full Caesar salad) and the lettuce was all brown. When I told the bartender I'd rather have a refund then take that salad she literally told me they were trying to get rid of old lettuce first but "she could cut some fresh for me if I wanted" wtf. I'm also glad I checked that bag because we got charged for extra Caesar dressing and they didn't even give us any at first. Unfortunately I should have checked our deep dish pizza as well. My family and I love Camacho's, and we eat here once or twice a month-- it CAN get expensive, so it's like a "treat yourself" for us. Their fries are cooked in beef tallow and are delicious. The wait time on that is a good while, but the servers always let us know the cook times when we sit down. We usually get a create your own thin crust with sausage and various veggies, and it is always hot and delicious. (I will say we tried it with chicken recently-- to be a little healthier-- and didn't love whatever chicken they use, but the rest of the pizza was good, and this was the only time we felt meh about anything with their pizza.) They have a smaller beer selection but they're priced well IMO. The Chicago hot dogs and their Italian beef sandwiches are soooooo good. They also have really good tiramisu. NOV 2022 - Well, after much hype on a local social media group and the fact that I drive by this location pretty much every day on my way to work, I thought it was about time to walk through the doors and check out Camacho's Famous! We were quickly greeted and brought to a table right away. It did take someone a bit to get over to us to get our drink order, but since we had time to look over the menu we were able to place our whole order rather than just our drinks. Speaking of drinks, adding root beer to the menu would be great. We started off with some fried cheese raviolis...with their signature sauce. The raviolis were tasty, but the sauce was the star of this appetizer. It was a pretty creamy four cheese blend inside the raviolis, which was very good. The sauce on the other hand - such a great flavor, certainly not a canned sauce. Our pizza order was a Deep Dish with pepperoni, onions, and sweet peppers...this is our 'go-to' order for any pizza place. The pizza came out sooner than expected was placed on the sturdy stand on the table. For the record: It was our responsibility and job to dish out the pizza, if it fell off of the stand for no apparent reason, it would have been completely OUR fault because our waitress placed it on the stand and did nothing else to it. Needless to say, we had absolutely ZERO issues with the pizza falling or the sturdiness of the stand...but, I digress - on to the pizza. Delicious, delicious, delicious! I am not from Chicago and have never been to Chicago, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once and have frozen Lou Malnati's pizzas delivered, so that counts for something, right? House made sauce and crust was just right, the cheese was delicious too. It had the right consistency, saltiness, and pull when transferring slices to our plates. The toppings were generously spread over the whole pie as well, so there was no disappointment there...and the amount of veggies was just right. This was a really good pizza guys...I won't go so far as to say that it's the best pizza in town, but this is REALLY good and I think you are doing yourself a huge disservice if you don't try them out. I prefer another style of pizza based in another pretty big city, but I will let you, the reader, figure that out. From what I have gathered, it's certainly more authentic of a Chicago Deep Dish than any chain pizza place in town (even the one with Chicago in their name). Wish this place was open for lunch because ever since Chi-Town Hot Dogs closed down, I haven't found a good Chicago Dog anywhere and would really like to try one. They had three TVs going behind the bar...two showing your standard sports shows and one showing some good ol' fashion wrassling. UPDATE: 06/2023 - FINALLY heard that this spot was gonna be open for lunch, which made me really happy because I have been wanting to try their Chicago Dog for about seven months now. It was a very good dog. Put together well, and not overloaded with the toppings. Just the right amount of everything, but could have an additional dash of celery salt. Well done! We did get the basket of fries, and while I ate them, I really wish more restaurants would opt for fresh-cut fries over frozen. I have been wanting to come here for a couple of months after the recommendation from a coworker. I decided to bring my wife here for our weekly date night since we are both transplant Illinoisans, and we love Chicago syle deep dish pizza. It's a nice restaurant with some Chicago Cubs and Bears memorabilia in it to help tie in the Chicago based menu. We ordered the stuffed Da meat deep dish pizza, which has pepperoni, sausage, ham, and bacon on it. It takes about 45 minutes to cook because of the size, but it was worth the wait. The pizza came out nice and hot, had a nice cheese pull, and tasted amazing. We love Giordano's pizza, and this was every bit as good. We each ate 2 pcs, which was a stretch for both of us, and still have half a pizza for dinner tomorrow. We will definitely be back, and I'm anxious to try other items on the menu. I tried this place because i was told by someone I know that it was good. Take a gander if you will... Environment - The first thing noticed upon entering is the small game room to the left and open seating to the right. A bar area is in the front as well but the ambiance is similar to any pizza joint. There was one other table there at 3pm on a Saturday which can be a bad indication but I wanted to try the food. It was also deathly quiet at there was no music playing until my last 5 or so minutes before i left. Service - my server was friendly but didnt introduce herself nor had a menu for me until I asked. After receiving a menu, I decided on a mello yellow, "da meats" deep dish and a chicago hot dog: the last being an item advertised as great from a source or two. My Chicago dog came out in about five minutes and it was dressed decently (see the photo) but lacked flavor. The only noticeable feature about it was an old bay like seasoning on the pickle. The other discerning quality of the hot dog was that after my first bite, it was COOL to the touch. Not cold but cool enough to easily notice. The bun was soft so that was a plus. I then sat in silence and also played a few games for about 20 minutes or so until my pizza was brought to the table. Aesthetically, it looked nice so after asking for napkins and silverware I then was ready to eat. The pizza was not cut well, in fact I had to use my utensils and some force to cut the dough. The cheese was hot and gooey but the pizza itself was cool inside and lacked any real flavor, to the point of having to use hot sauce, parm cheese and red pepper flakes. I decided to take it home to season it properly. They had no receipt paper so I had to go to the front counter and my total was $41 and some change. Overall, expensive and underwhelming at best. Id suggest dining here if you want fast food quality eats and have 40 minutes to spare. Otherwise, find a different place. TL;DR - deathly quiet environment, cold and tasteless food, empty place, long wait. Same as Old Chicago on Wilma Rudolph. read more
