I stayed at the hostel above and decided to grab a snack. The service was a bit inattentive despite it not being busy. Though it was during broad daylight, the place smelled like a freshman dorm after a weekend party -- stale beer! My table wobbled so much I feared my water would spill. The rib ends had more gristle and fat than actual meat, which was a letdown. Prices were reasonable, so there's that. It's okay if you're desperate and don't want to walk anywhere, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again.

    The Cambie pub

So this story literally begins with - I went to a pub ... (more on that later). The Cambie Pub + Grill (+ Hostel above) was originally going to close up shop towards the end of 2019 due to a nasty divorce - please use 'The Google' for all the info. By miracle it was given a reprieve & was 'saved by the bell' as the saying goes! The Cambie (opens at 8am everyday!) - is one of the original Vancouver pubs to still be going strong - 123 years later!!!!! Come on now that deserves a standing ovation!!! Bravo!!! Ok so please note this is an older pub & the owners have pretty much kept it intact way back to how it was yesteryear! So don't walk in expecting any type of modernization! I was almost expecting there to be the old 'pisspots' at the bar & under the bench tables! This pub is literally a walk back in time - ala the mens washroom = yikes!!! It could basically be categorized as a - classic pub in a very, very old sense of way!!! There is a hostel above the pub that draws many foreigners to it - rates must be cheap. You will meet all types of characters here - so if you dare enter, check your morals, vanity & ego at the door!!! You've been officially warned! A good friend of mine grew up in this pub & swears by it! He loves the simplicity of it & the old time character is what makes the Cambie stand out - in his words! Now of course this type of pub is not for everyone as its a real 'walk back in time' indeed! However, he loves the cheap beer he's had over the years & the nostalgia of it - running into the member of a punk band & sharing beer with him (Mr Chi Pig of legendary Canadian punk rock band - SNFU. Check out YouTube). My punk band interest was way back in the early 80s with The Sex Pistols, The Clash & The Cure. Low & behold Mr Chi Pig was at the Cambie that day as well sitting a few tables from us. By the way, like James Bond, I do not drink beer! Hence I'm unable to rate or tell you how good the beer is - vodka's my charm! My friend had invited me to meet him here (his favourite pub) & chat - footy. He recommends the Burger & Brew deal that the Cambie offers - good value & taste. He supports my enemy team, Man United = boooooo!!! Hahaha! So a few weeks ago when I had popped in & on that particular day, a photographer was taking publicity shots for the pub & was asking anyone inside the pub if they wouldn't mind!? We said sure why not & as I said at the beginning of this from the top ... I walked into a pub & voila - the black & white pic of me was taken at the Cambie! The promotions manager was kind enough to email me the pic just recently. I do charge $10 for all screen grabs of my photo so make sure you all pay up or they'll be a knock on your door! LMAO! We sat with a couple guys & I met an interesting chap who was wearing on old time Man U jersey, played footy & had had dinner with the Man U chairman (saw photos) & hung out with the late great - George Best!!! As I'm digressing, let me end by saying please remind me one day to share this hilarious Liverpool fan joke he told us!!! The Cambie is located a stones throw away from the famous Water Street in Gastown, so after a few drinks you can sober up via a good walk about! I'm giving The Cambie top marks! Why!?? It's cheap, nasty, easy & unpretentious, great for groups & the adventure begins when you walk in!!! If you are coming here expecting a 'classy' venue - turn around & walk away! To everyone I wish you all an awesome 2020 & blessings! May only good vibes come your way!!!!! Cheers!

    That's the stare down.

Food isn't great. Chicken wrap was mostly a salad wrap. Fries are good. Service horrible. 3 of us in here, two waitresses, one sipping pop and doing nothing. I spent 10 mins trying to get my bill. Finally the bus boy noticed and told the Coca-Cola lady that I wanted to pay. Another 5 mins as she finished her pop. No tip. Then glared at me with another pop. Time for a new job sweetie!

The veggie poutine was delicious. We sat in the outside area, the setting was very nice. They have a decent drink selection and friendly staff. If you want a classic dive bar setting then this is the place

It was pretty bad. We only stopped in here because we were staying at the Cambie hostel and were allowed a $5 off discount per person, but even so, the food was horrible. (Food:) I got the AVO TOAST. You think it'd be hard to mess up such a simple dish, but I could even make better avocado and toast at home. The entire dish was bland, all of which just needed more salt and pepper, and the eggs were rubbery (although the yolk was poached well). Disappointing. The tater tots were the only highlight to the dish. My sister got the CHICKEN AND WAFFLES. I took one bite of the waffle and almost threw up. I spit it out right away. Something about the batter or the syrup made the waffle taste disgusting. The chicken was also very fatty and mostly skin, not a lot of chicken at all. (Price:) AVO TOAST: $10 (cheap, but not worth it) CHICKEN AND WAFFLES: $13 (Service:) Took forever to get our food and our bill. (Overall:) DO NOT COME. At least for breakfast. Even if it's free, it might not be worth it.

Well we walked past this place and glanced in to find they had games. My hubby and I went in for drinks and played all the games they offer including skeet ball. They offer pool as well. They have a large calk board that had saying on the wall so of course I had to add a few to the list. What you would like to see or do before you die..... It was fun adding comments. Nice bar with friendly people. Great for large groups or to watch sports. It looks like a dive but the people are great and the locals are even better. Nice place for large groups to gather and play games. If you are felling lucky you can play the pull tabs as well. Had a great time at this place,

Finally had a chance to try the nachos here. There are 2 sizes - small (~$9) and large (~$15). The bartender told me the small is a better deal. It was big enough to feed 3 people. Beautiful. The layering was surprisingly decent. Toppings were great, and the chips were crunchy. Also, the dish wasn't very greasy at all! Delicious.

Ambience: Well it was a bar. But a rather dingy bar. Not really the nice sort of cafe for breakfast you'd hope for, but we had $5 off from the hostel and wanted to try it. Service: It wasn't super busy but it still took a while for a server to greet us. Everyone seemed to be working on setting up the bar, and breakfast customers weren't really a priority. Food: I had the chicken and waffles and my sister had the avo toast. The first thing I said to the people who sat next to us as we were leaving was DO NOT GET THE CHICKEN AND WAFFLES. Hard pass. The chicken was more skin than chicken, and it was extremely over fried skin. There was actually hardly any chicken and did I mention the skin tasted bland and like oil?Now the waffles were crap too. They were sort of soggy and tasted like frozen waffles that you microwaved. Pretty gross. My sisters avocado toast wasn't too bad. The eggs were poached nicely and the tater tots were pretty good, hence the 2/5 stars. Many better places to go for the same price. Would not recommend at all.

Our server suggested that, because it was happy hour, a pitcher would be cheaper and save us money. I specifically asked how many ounces the pitcher was and was told 32 oz, which sounded reasonable since we planned to get 15 oz beers. When the pitcher arrived, it was clearly 64 oz. The server apologized for the mistake, and I let it go, thinking we didn't have to drink it all. However, when the bill arrived, the price didn't match the quote. We were charged $25, not the $20 we were originally told when the 64-oz pitcher showed up, with the explanation that the regular price was $35 and that we had "saved" money. In the end, we were served twice the beer we wanted and paid twice what we intended, based on information that kept changing. Whether this was incompetence or intentional, it left me feeling frustrated and uncomfortable. The food and atmosphere really were great -- but the experience was overshadowed by feeling manipulated. Enjoy the food and beer, but pay close attention to what the wait staff tells you and what ends up on the bill.

Firstly when we arrived nobody greeted us for I would say about 10 minutes even though the place was quite empty when we arrived, and when we finally received a table we were seated at a table that was wobbly, and the menus we received were stained and sticky, which got me immediately on edge about hygiene and made me uncomfortable. For drinks selection - nothing special that you can't get anywhere else, and the place being quite empty the vibe was quite boring too. I just felt uncomfortable being there and there isn't anything special about this pub that you can't get better anywhere else. We finished the one drink that we got and headed elsewhere. I wouldn't recommend this spot.

This corner spot is neatly tucked away with a few outdoor seating spots, but the magic in itself is inside. The mix of vintage and old glam showcases the hybrid aesthetic. Perfectly described, The Ballyhoo definitely lives up to the over-the-top decor from their food offerings and styling. I managed to find myself arriving within happy hour and was super please I was able to bring my laptop out and get some work done without it causing anyone a fuss. The server I had was super friendly and she had all the tables she was handling in good spirit. After opting for a local draft beer and some bites, I kept over hearing how delicious the mozz sticks were. Now IDK how one levels up mozzarella sticks, but these truly were some of the best I've ever had. The dipping sauce was super spicy but bearable for anyone's heat preference and the breading and cheese inside had such a burst of flavor you wanted to simply inhale them. What had me in awe though was the cheese pull game. No need to fear about them being overdone not cooked enough, these babies were cooked to perfection with the cheese literally oozing out of each bite. I saw a few plates being served around and think this spot is definitely worth exploring.
