We received a call from a caretaker who could hardly speak enough English to tell us what hospital he was taken to. We told her to have the RN call us immediately. It has been four days and we have still not heard from waltonwood higher ups or medical staff, including the executive director we asked to have contact us. We went to get some things from his place and saw the room had been totally rearranged, including bad attempts at cleaning up the puddles of blood from his fall. Please remember that our grandfather is immobile, and it is not like he could even roll or attempt to fall off the bed. I think there is a strong reason as to why Waltonwood is silent, and per my last review I can only hope families of residents and potential ones see this.

It would be five stars but the food and dining room service is AWFUL. I emailed several times to the "chef" and director with zero response. Tracey manages independent living and she is very nice but not empowered to make any changes. For $6-$7k a month they can afford to pay their staff better and get a real chef. I live close by so regularly bring meals. Outside of the food the place is great.

Administration and management, not so much. The building is in terrible disrepair and the so called "Manager of Plant and Physical Safety," has held this position for so long and without question, that he no longer even pretends to attend to needed repairs or to the requests of residents in need of service. It does no good to complain or report his laziness, as he is one of two managers here at Caton, and lives with the other. Both are long time friends, 30 plus years, of the administrator...a monopoly, so to speak. As a recent and long term employee, there is no one an employee can go to for fair and unbiased help. Example: Several months ago, an employee reported harassment by the "Manager of Plant and Physical Safety," to the administrator...and that was the end of that. Though it was stated this report would be investigated, it was not. I was the Charge Nurse just above this employee and had first hand knowledge of this situation. The "Manager of Physical Plant and Safety," actually attempted to involve me in his harassment of this employee and I refused. Since her report of the harassment, it was obvious she was no longer welcome at Caton and she was eventually bullied into resigning, as was I for reporting the same manager to the City of Manassas for building code violations. Administrator announced our census and staffing is at an UNPRECEDENTED LOW...staffing is critically, dangerously low. In a years time, we have lost 10 plus employees. Many long time employees and some new hires came for just weeks and left with no explanation... The facility has been so poorly run since the current administrator has held the position by default, Caton was sold last year by Novant Health to UVA Health, effective January 1, 2022 and 3 weeks ago, UVA Health announced, it too is shopping around for alternatives...

Unfortunately I believed that they would be able to keep my mother safe, but she fell multiple times and the last one put her in the hospital with a brain bleed and surgery. The staff was very nice, the food great, but they didn't have much planned for the residents to do. Didn't have much interaction at all with the director of nursing since she was more concerned about decorating the place. The owners should handle that and free her up to help with the residents! I NEVER got a call from anyone after my mother's brain bleed to see how she was etc. For the price you pay for a place like this...it's not worth it!! I do need to say..the PT/OT department was awesome! Kind, caring and they did call to check on mother after they heard of her fall.

The nurses are insensitive and do not know how to give pain medicine to a dying patient who is in severe pain. They have taken advantage of the COVID shut down because relatives cannot have eyes on the care that their loved ones are receiving. They do not return phone calls. Their own staff complains about not being able to take care of residents due to staff shortage. This is not the place to skimp on staff for monetary purposes! Good job big money makers! My father and I were new to this process, and had no idea where to start. We didn't have a lot of financial freedom and limited choices in the Shenandoah Valley for my 90 year old grandmother who has dementia. We visited the facility and it seemed charming and the people seemed kind. They evaluated my Grandmother and determined that she did not need to be in "Morning Glory" the dementia care unit. We were surprised, but saw their crudentials and thought they knew best. The place looked over all clean and the rooms attended to. After one week of my Grandmother being there, we started to see some stark contrasts to the "homey haven" we visited at first. We began to see that it was unkept, that people were wandering around without adequate mind to do so, the door was never locked, and it started to seem like there was a faint smell, but we blew these things off. Maybe it was a bad day. Things seemed to get worse. We were in there 3 times a week usually and starting to notice some really odd things. My Grandmother started to have other people's clothing on. I would often come and she would be very dirty. Food on her some days, other days she would just seem "out of it." The bathroom would constantly have urine about the floor as we realized that she was sharing a bathroom with 6 other people. As the next weeks came on, my Grandmother seemed weaker and weaker. They would tell me she didn't eat breakfast or lunch.. which began to startle me as she was supposed to take her medicine with food. Her knees began buckling when we would go to see her and we realized that something was very wrong. My sister watched them look over her medicine routine so we could only assume this was happening regularly. Later, both my Sister and Father overheard a nurse yelling at her to put her clothes on, then yet another nurse telling the room next door to shut up. By this point we were beyond at our wits end, frightened and over all a nervous wreck with her being there just one more day. We removed her after one month and vowed that we would write this review to warn others as going in to this we would have loved to see a review that would have helped us along or given us any indication. There was nothing on this particular facility. We have since moved her to Shenandoah Terrace in Woodstock, VA and it is night and day the change. We found out that she was being given panic medication as a maintenance drug, which would explain the behavior. We suspect she was not getting her meds in general correctly which further disrupted her mind and body. She is bright eyed and looks healthy and stronger than ever after just 3 weeks. We are just so thankful for her new home. Please beware of Dutch Haven and do not buy into the act that they portray there. It is not fit for elderly people and the staff is not knowledgable, motivated, nor compassionate enough to take on this level of care to help the elderly community.

They do not abide by the Virginia state nursing laws or adhere to Resident's rights. The living room in the facility is completely for show as they only allow the residents to occupy it for show, they are otherwise discouraged from using the space. If your family member can no longer walk or stand on their own they will force them out of the comfort of the wheelchair and into a hard dining room chair with no safety to prevent falls, which have occurred. No safety fall mats are used and pressure mats are rare. The call bell system is old and unreliable. The daytime staff will go out for breaks during resident meal times so no help for anyone choking or otherwise in need during meals. The evening staff is very likely to destroy any clothing during laundry so do not send anything nice if you plan to move family in.
