Not for vet reactive pets…read more Prior to this month, I was satisfied overall with Porter Square Vet despite some mild issues, primarily around communication. I don't generally publish complaints but due to the vets unwillingness to discuss their errors, I feel obligated to warn any pet owners with vet-reactive dogs. When I moved to Somerville and brought my dog to Porter Square Vet, I was transparent that my dog is vet reactive. I mentioned that he doesn't like the vet in general but that he doesn't tolerate exams. I also mentioned that I had previously used a fear free vet who was willing to do sedation for annual exams / as needed to ensure adequate care. I was told we could consider that if it proved to be necessary. At my dog's first exam with them, I was given recommendations for dental hygiene products, which i purchase and utilized. At his last exam, I specifically asked about dental cleanings, as I had noticed a good amount of plaque build up on my dogs teeth when I was brushing them. The vet looked at my dogs mouth briefly and I was told it was necessary at that time. I brought my dog in this month due to non-specific behavior changes as well as some dietary issues and worsening bad breath. The vet offered a dental cleaning/check, which I agreed to. The procedure overall went fine, but I was told my dog had significant periodontal disease and that they had removed 14 teeth which was confusing considering I was told a dental clean was not warranted just 5 months prior. Upon voicing my frustration, I was told "the vet was unable to exam his teeth due to being muzzled for the exam." My dog requires additional vet care for which I sought a different practice since Porter Square Vet was unable to develop or follow an appropriate care plan and Porter Square Vet has now opted to ignore me.

I've waited for some time to pass to write this review out of not wanting to write a review in an overly heated state. But if you value your pets welling being at all you will find somewhere else. This is the first vet I took my 3 year old cat to when I moved to the area. At the time she had started peeing outside of the liter box. I came in concerned she might have a UTI and they took a urine sample. The sample came back showing crystals. The male vet told me they were caused from "anxiety". My cat is the most social, happy, carefree cat in the world - I told him there was no way. He said something MUST have changed and insisted I must have moved, gotten a new roommate, a new work schedule, etc. None of which were true. He suggested a few small things but ultimately told me I should put her on kitty prozac. I said absolutely not and left. Not long after I took her back in to see a different female doctor for a breathing issue and she claimed she had asthma. When she called to tell me this she mentioned my cat was in great shape for her age. I asked why she said that given the fact my cat was only 3 and she laughed and told me the system told her my cat was like 14 years old. What logical human being would assess my cat and think she was that old. I asked them to change it in their system and then spent HUNDREDS of dollars on the asthma items she suggested. Even though, once again, I did not think it was asthma but at the time I wanted to trust the "professional". Flash forward to Thanksgiving my cat begins straining and peeing blood. We rush her to an ER vet and find out she has bladder stones. And how did they catch it? They did a urine sample and found crystals in her pee, once again. The crystals that the male vet told me were due to anxiety. After spending the next 2 days at the emergency vet I took her to a new vet a friend suggested. At this new vet, they wanted all of her records immediately to do emergency surgery. I called Arlington Animal Clinic and explained the situation and that I needed her records ASAP. I had to call them not once, not twice but rather 4 times to get this information!!!! And once again, my cat's age is some random wrong age. Their negligence caused my cat to suffer for MONTHS. When I called them to explain the things they suggested weren't working they once again turned to Prozac. I should have trusted my gut and got a second opinion earlier and that's on me. But I wanted to not think I knew better than professionals. In addition to all of this, I brought up my cat's so called asthma to the new vet and when they checked they said she absolutely did not have asthma she was just overweight. And sure enough, when she lost weight the problem went away. These people are horrible and I can't believe the ratings on here. At this point I'm not even sure these people actually have veterinary degrees. These people could have cost my cat her life and they're lucky I didn't sue them. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!

From the moment we called ahead to say we were on our way, the staff were incredibly responsive and ready for us when we arrived. They quickly assessed the situation, diagnosed the issue, and carried out the necessary procedures. The clinic itself was very clean, welcoming, and well equipped. Dr. Estes explained everything clearly--what was happening, the prognosis, and what we should do next. The techs / nurses--Kim Nguyen, Kendra Baker, and Jennifer Ducharme--were also wonderful: professional, patient, and very caring. They were attentive throughout the entire process while our Pomeranian was undergoing sedation, and you could tell they genuinely cared. I'm sure they see situations like this every day, but they still treated our dog with the attention and care he needed. Small things like that matter. These are clearly very capable people who could work in many different fields--including human medicine--but they choose to care for pets, and it shows. I would absolutely recommend this clinic and would return again if needed. My one tip: call ahead so they can prepare for your arrival.
