I didn't realize this coffee spot was tucked away inside here. I've always wanted to stop in and explore the different eateries but never seem to have the time. I'm so glad it popped up on Google because it gave me the push to finally check it out. I ordered a latte (I wish I could remember which one!), and it was absolutely delicious. I've honestly been dreaming about it since last Saturday! The service was warm and welcoming from the moment I walked in, which made the experience even better. While I was there, they also had a pop-up shop with local vendors. I walked out with a donut, a pair of earrings, and some oils because everything looked so good. If you're visiting, just make a left when you walk in and head straight to the back to find it. The space is super cute with plenty of room to sit, sip, eat, or even get some work done. We gave it another shot and ordered a Matcha, unfortunately, the same experience, the ambience of the roost in general is very nice. This was a great option for a work day. Located inside The Roost food hall - there was plenty of open and comfortable seating. You can order from different vendors and they deliver it to your table. I opted for a Butterfly Pea Arnold Palmer (iykyk) from Cameo (the coffee spot) and sushi from AKO. The arnold palmer was just what I needed - it added to my calm state and put me in a comfortable mood to lock in for a few hours. They have plenty of coffee/tea options and the service was friendly. My friends and I stopped by after the cherry blossom 5k. We ordered 2 matcha lattes one regular latte. Service was terrible, there was no line or rush and we waited more than 25 mins. My friend went up to request a refund since we had a train to catch. After requesting a refund, they then quickly made the drinks within 2 mins. When we finally got our drinks they were all watered down and pretty gross. I wouldn't recommend anyone to get their drinks here. read more

This cafe came to be along with the wider "hospitality" space called 'The Roost' that was built during Covid. So it's easy to start working over coffee and a croissant at Cameo, and then move seemlessly to one of the other indoor eateries in the Roost for a meal, never stopping to work. As usual in my case, I stuck it out at Cameo through the afternoon. Very nice service, they brought a bottle of tapwater and glass to my table unasked--even a cloth napkin and cutlery even though all I had purchased was a a cup of chia seed "muesli" with fruits and a cappuccino (later supplemented by a coffee). Seating is awesome, either at a normal table but at the large windows to occasionally peoplewatch, or away from the window but in a comfy 50s-diner style booth (I used the latter). read more

I stopped by this coffee shop off the random to work out some 2023 goals. Cameo is located in the food hall called The Roost in SE DC, off Pennsylvania Ave. - I ordered the Mocha and the Avocado, Egg & Cheese sandwich. Both were phenomenal! - The Mocha, though kinda pricey (one of the pricier drinks on the menu), is in my top 5 best Mocha I've had in the DC area. I ended up ordering a second mug of Mocha. - The Avocado, Egg & Cheese sandwich, though also a little pricey for what you get, was quite yummy. Perfectly buttered/season. The eggs do come scrambled on the sandwich, so I requested mine over medium. I think too much aioli was added, but it didn't take away too much from the overall taste. I do recommend this coffee shop. Ideally, it's best to come early to grab a booth seat (maybe before noon). There's seating on the couches and chairs facing the windows with small round tables. In addition to coffee/hot drinks and breakfast sandwiches, they also have some pastries and some cold drinks. The breakfast ends at 3pm. The staff is also very friendly & easygoing. Cameo is the coffee shop inside The Roost, a "culinary club" in Hill East across the street from the Potomac Avenue Metro. If you go through the doors of the Blackbird, the apartments within the building, Cameo is to the right next to Shop Made In DC. The coffee shop is a wrap around bar with bar seating, a long wooden table and a few soft chairs in the corner. It's simple, industrial design is beautiful. They brew coffee locally roasted like Vigilante Coffee. They have your basic coffee offerings including decaf coffee. Their pastries (muffins, croissants, etc) come from Pluma and Buzz Bakery. The best coffee shop I've found in DC to do work from. They have a variety of seating types (I count 4! Bar seating, booth seating, couch/table vibes, and a big high top table). It has solid natural light, abundant outlets, free WiFi, good coffee (iced americano could be stronger), and a fun Shop Made in DC merch collection. It's not empty, which surprised me, because I just never hear about it! Also appreciate that they are open until 6. I can see this place being a regular spot for me to do deep work days when I need a change of scenery. I enjoy Cameo. I think their lattes are tasty and I love the location. I've had a seasonal latte (pumpkin or squash, I think) and the Samoa latte. Both were good and the Samoa one really did taste slightly like a Samoa. I'm sad that their pastries come from Buzz, because Buzz is not good, and I wish the staff were friendlier. But I'll be back for good lattes and the convenient location. read more

April 2022 Update: Service has gotten much slower over the last three months, and espresso drinks are now hit or miss. Cameo was solid. I've had coffee here almost every day for two years, and in the last three months, you could see the decline in real time. Best guess is staff turnover but this is no longer a top-tier coffee shop. It's just too inconsistent. You're better off going to Peregrine a few blocks away if you want an espresso-based drink. Still fine if you want a drip coffee, but awful otherwise. *The chai latte has gotten so wildly inconsistent that it's not even worth ordering anymore. Sad. read more

Cameo is a hidden gem of a coffee shop on Capital Hill. It's tucked inside the Roost, a multi-vendor food hall on the ground floor of the BlackBird apartments across the street from the Potomac Metro. I'm a coffee snob, and DC has some really good shops and some mediocre places. The lattes at Cameo are up to Italian standards: never bitter, always smooth, always the right temperature. Jordan and Jet and the rest of the staff are super friendly. Finally, Cameo, because it's tucked into a food court, has PLENTY of seating. You can always find a seat and a place to get your laptop up and running. And, they have several partner vendors offering really good breakfast sandwich fare. read more

Delicious oatmilk latte solidified to me that the beans they're using are really smooth and full bodied. I asked for it extra hot and they obliged. Beautiful design and beautiful space to escape to. I was sad to see that there was already a lot of wear and tear on the seating and tables and it appeared as though there hadn't been a comprehensive cleaning crew that cleaned out the roost where the coffee shop is housed.... Here's the kind of place Cameo is: this morning I smacked my mocha across the table (call it Zoom-related enthusiasm). I went to the counter and asked Nick (he's the red-haired guy) for a few napkins. He brought a wet rag over to my table, wiped up my caffeinated crime, and then brought me a new mocha, no charge. I've had similarly positive experiences with others behind the Cameo counter. Everyone provides excellent customer service. I'm very glad to have Cameo in the neighborhood. Hill East needed a solid coffee shop. My oat mocha was good as was the service, but it's disappointing they have no gluten free pastries or sweets. Most of the other spots around Capitol Hill have at least 1-2 GF pastry options for their Celiac or gluten intolerant customers. I hope to see them expand their offerings to be a bit more inclusive!! read more

This is a weighted average of 5 stars for ambiance and setting, but 2 for the coffee itself. It pains me to give a lousy review during Covid but I am hopeful it can improve. The setting is awesome: the cafe is also a Shop-Made-in-DC store that sells local crafts and artsy goods. The store has a pretty impressive section essentially dedicated to RBG portraits on everything from greeting cards to tea towels. It's located inside the new "The Roost" industrial-chic food hall, where you can get silly-fancy poutine and pawpaw mezcal cocktails (check and check, recommend both). The seating everywhere is inviting and spacious. As for the coffee, meh. I've been here about four or five times for coffee and it's been really, bizarrely slow whether there are 2-3 people waiting ahead of me or even when I'm the only one. I waited about 20 minutes once for them to brew a fresh batch of iced coffee. Then they gave me the iced coffee and it was lukewarm dirty water because they had just cooled down the freshly-made coffee with a ton of ice. That was undrinkable, but they kindly replaced it with something a little less diluted. Other times, the coffee has been fine, but not excellent. $4 is a lot for an o-kay cappuccino! For the price they charge, it should be top-notch. Otherwise, maybe charge $3.60 , the Capitol Hill consensus rate? (Comparing with nearby Hype Cafe, Ebenezer, and Peregrine.) Final note: The Pullman seeded sourdough loaf they sell at the counter is awesome, very large, lasts a long time, fun for the whole family. read more

As a patron of cafes all around the city I genuinely enjoy the calming and tranquil environment of cafes. They tend to be a place of positivity and gathering, and a place where I am able to escape the hectic rat race that tends to be our beautiful city of DC. Unfortunately this was just the opposite with my first time ever going to Cameo. The space is large and quite appealing with its assorted food stands and large windows allowing for a pleasant amount of sunshine and people watching. When I entered around 11am (3/30/22) I was greeted by a slightly timid but pleasant barista that seemed to be working exclusively at register. Once I ordered I was instructed to swing around the other side of the cafe where the espresso machine was located. I was immediately engulfed in a loud and quite vehemently vocal group of baristas manning the espresso machine complaining about the space and their displeasure in working at this establishment. They were clearly audible from across the cafe and was completely unprofessional and quite disturbing for me and I'm sure the other guests. Using phrases such as "This place doesn't have it together, or this company is garbage" really affected my experience there and definitely made it so that I have no interest in returning. The worst part about this was I noticed the one individual who was helping me at register being totally ostracized and put in this super awkward place where she felt like she needed to be as far away as possible. This looked like an incredibly difficult work environment and I wish her the best of luck. All in all coffee was decent and space was nice and the one register girl was lovely hence the extra star but I will not be coming back due to the blatant disregard for customer service and professionalism. read more

We just left Cameo and the cashier was so snarky. She rolled her eyes when we asked if the breakfast sandwiches were available (since the other Roost bays aren't open until lunchtime it's not always clear). She finally said that they were available and had been for years. What? Then she said that all we had to do was order with her and then go to the Red Apron bay to retrieve it ourselves. That's not intuitive, so it's not crazy to ask about the process. She acted very frustrated when we opted to change a beverage from hot to iced in the same breath. They hadn't even sent the order to the barista yet. When we said "thank you" she just stared at us until we said it again and she appeared forced to acknowledge it. It was the weirdest energy. The barista who crafted the actual beverages was very nice and professional, but to be confronted with such attitude first thing in the morning? All we wanted was a peaceful start to our day. It's so expensive, and the first time I went there I got a lopsided muffin and they gave me black chai instead of a chai latte. That was like on opening day though and the second time it was fine!
