I visited to sell a 1oz gold american eagle coin. The young lady at the counter took the coin back to talk to who I presume was a manager in order to agree on an offer. I was told they would pay $41 (!!). I stated "but it is a gold coin" (suggesting the offer was obviously wrong). I will let you as the reader decide if this sounds like an earnest mistake or something else. In any case, I would be cautious when transacting here. read more

My experience - 1) called for a quote on coin appraisals for an estate. Was told Adriana was the only person that could do this. That she had finished enough work to go out with her co-worker for a bagel and coffee and to call back in 15min. 2) called back, was told she was busy and to email her. I emailed an excel with all coins and photos. waited 2 days - no response. 3) called back, was told Adriana was busy and to call back in 15 min. I said I have done this a few times and haven't been able to reach her. I was immediately cut off and told - she is the coach for the Menlo girls pollo team and they won a championship and she was out celebrating with them. That she had missed the brunch but was going to go meet them to celebrate. Then, I was hung up on. 4) I called back and said, I think we were disconnected. The lady, think her name is Pam said I said call back in 15 min. I said; please don't hang up on me again. I just want to say, I sent a list with photos. Can you please ask Adriana to check it and call me. She responded with - I will put a note on her computer but she already has so many. 5) Waited 2 more days, called back again, I was told Adriana was busy and put on hold for 12 min before I hung up. This has went on for 1 week. I'm not sure how you get assistance but if anyone knows how or can refer me to someone (not in SF) that can do an appraisals for a large coin collection for an estate please let me know. read more

Honestly, in my opinion... the best coin shop in the Bay Area! Been coming to Camino Coin for about 2 years now and have not come across another store with better customer service and pricing. Every time I've visited the service is fast, not waiting for more than 5 min., and the people there are very knowledgeable and friendly. When selling to them, they offer fair prices and always cash on the spot... no questions asked. My understanding is that a lot of these are being generated because some felt badly about the service they received. It's certainly a stereotype in this industry that you'll run into grumpy people, but that hasn't been my experience here so far. Best prices for precious metals sellers on the peninsula. Every other place I've been to tries to take a couple of points off the spot market rates. Horrible horrible company. I did business with them 30 years ago and 20 years ago and I had no problems with my transactions with them back then. My most recent experience for a $10,000 order was awful. The son-in-law, who takes orders on the phone, is inconsistent in what he says about their offerings. The woman owner then made a promise to make things right, but she didn't keep it. I couldn't have a decent conversation with either of them because they keep interrupting and wouldn't let me finish a sentence. Finally, we mutually agreed to cancel the order. This is a family-run business and acts like it. My advice is to go elsewhere for a professional transaction. Camino Coin's prices were SLIGHTLY better than others, but it's not worth it. read more

A reasonable pricing structure and people. New location is nice, and will serve them and the customers well I think. It is a business, and they will need to make a few dollars when you conduct a transaction whether you are buying or selling. MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT IS A SAFE place to do business. I have purchased and sold bullion here over many years: I recently handed over $1,000 extra at the counter here to make a purchase and get change. I was being absent minded in my own counting; my money was put through the counter and I was handed back the $1000 extra as one would expect. I have made similar errors before, here, and never felt like an employee or owner would even consider trying to take advantage of me in the slightest bit. They will round a couple dollars in your favor sometimes even, and are generally pleasant, however being that all transactions are centered around money, and I spent a little time behind the counter of a pawn shop in my youth in San Francisco- anyone who comes in trying to be in a hurry or rude about a transaction is going to trigger a defensive posture as that's the sign of a scam in progress, people with fake gold, diamonds, or other false items, or stolen items, are the ones who are rude and in a hurry. Anyone with a pocket full of money who wants to invest in nuismatics/bullion or choosing to liquidate a valid asset in exchange for immediate pocket full of cash isn't in a hurry or rude. And Retail value isn't actual value of anything: a jewelry store pays all expenses and salaries off the inflated price paid for the items, what the jewelry store pays wholesale is barely the actual value, and once its a used item, peoples personal taste are so varied no business would pay anything near the wholesale price it had new. So If you buy a $10,000 bracelet at Macy's MSRP you did just lose about 6500 to 8000 dollars as it's only worth about $2,000- I would expect a price similar to this here or at a pawnshop, but it's on demand service and you no longer want the item and you want cash. There is a lot more gold and gems out there than most people think. Again Camino Coin is one of the best options nearby. If I lived in LA, I might get $20/coin more/less depending on buying or selling, but I wouldn't drive there to save $500.00. read more

(long read, but worth reading for anybody selling gold, silver or coins)..a week off and realizing gold and silver prices have gone up significantly...knew nothing about selling gold or silver, or selling coins...had some old jewelry from the 80s and a ton of old money...didn't know anything about coins and never bought coins...since childhood, whenever an unusual coin was found or was used to pay for things at the family store, it was placed in a separate box...some people would bring cool looking coins to trade for things at the store...for forty years, old jewelry and coins were all just kept in boxes and water jugs...after uncle's passing, i didn't have any interest in collecting gold, silver or old money....also, it was incredibly heavy to move around!...looked through some of the jewelry and pulled out what i thought were the cheapest stuff (stamped 14k)...also, started asking people about coins online...flooded with private messages with interest to buy...decided to deal with the coins later...start with couple 14k jewelry pieces... lady at church had a jewelry shop...took a sample of 14k necklaces, bracelets and rings..lady offered $2,000 cash for the samples...was just checking if it was worth anything..was worth something!...never wanting to take the first offer, went to another jewelry shop...russian lady seemed very uninterested and just tossed it to a scale...did some testing in the back...seemingly very uninterested, she offered $5,000 cash and said i have to decide right now because she was going to scrap some jewelry that day...$5,000?!!..was very excited...declined and decided to investigate further...for couple days, carried it around and when i saw "buy gold" sign at a jewelry shop, pawn shop or precious metal dealer, took my sample in...another jewelry shop offered $6,000 cash or i could take about $7,000 worth of any jewelry or watch....for a week (having to run other errands), went to many shops from cupertino all the way to san francisco...during this time, i started to study and watch a lot of youtube videos about selling gold, silver and coins...learned about precious metal "spot" price...how to value precious metal and what to expect when selling and what percentage of spot i should be getting for different types of precious metals...by this time, i've been to a lot of places and had lot of knowledge...i valued the the small sample of 14k jewelry at little over $10,000...determined 80% or more over "spot" should be a fair to good...after all the acid tests, electrical current tests and x-ray machine analysis, i knew the jewelry was authentic...at this point, it was more fun than buying and selling stocks because it was live transactions with people...went to over dozen shops and had offers from $5,000, $6,000 to $7,000 and close to 80% (under $8,000, but never over)....after a week, was tired and learned enough...most shops will try their best to take advantage of people...there are honest shops, but things can change when you decide to actually sell it...some shops will only pay what they offered after it is refined (learned that this is never a good idea because there is always room for errors and shops might change how much they pay at the end)....also, never mail/ship gold to buyers and wait for a check...the purpose of the shops paying 80% or less is to cover the margin of error...was very close to selling it to another shop for near $8,000 cash, but the shop suddenly changed their story and wanted to write a post dated check and i would have to wait a week before i could deposit it...i kindly declined and ask for my things and as i was walking out, he yelled for me to come back and that he will give cash and even offered more (but, pretended i didn't hear and walked out).... 2 shops haven't visited...camino coin next...walked in to camino coin with the same sample of 14k jewelry...like all my other visits, stayed quiet to let them view and make an offer...asked how much they pay and kyle stated, "80% spot"...very straight forward right from the start..this shop used an x-ray metal analyzer to check authenticity on the counter...noticed a lot of the same things and bills in the shop...pointed to couple of the coins and asked how much they pay...some of the bullion, they paid "spot" and other items varied...after endless testing from other shops, i knew the jewelry was authentic...kyle went to the calculator, looked up current gold price, weighed and offered me roughly little over $8,300 and some change...exactly 80% spot and the exact number i had in mind as a fair deal...asked for $8,500 and he accepted...went back with few coins and was offered little over $1,600, but decided to study more before selling more gold, silver or coins....gold and coin selling is done on weekdays! read more

I was looking to sell some gold and pick up some coins which I hadn't done in years. First there was no one at the store who could evaluate the gold on a Saturday. There was no way to sell and I wouldn't take time off during the work week. That service no being available on Saturday is not mentioned on their web site. Drove up for nothing. Second, the inside of the business looks more like a generic sales or accounting office than one catering to retail customers. A bunch of desks with office equipment and ledgers or what. And the selection of coins to browse in and around the display is a pitiful after-thought. Some low grade items for the local kids I guess. If you go to their online site and poke through their various coin types - they're all "out of stock". As bad or worse than the store itself. And the effort to help the casual walk-in customer was really lackluster. I felt like I was interrupting. I was hoping to like this local business. There must be some other means by which they make most of their money than retail coin sales to collectors. If I ever wanted to do more purchases in the future or sell the more valuable parts of my mothballed collection, this would be the last place I'd go for my experience as a small timer. read more

Had a bad experience with this dealer yesterday. I called a few places to see what they had in stock and prices. I called Camino coin and a guy answered and asked for my number and someone would call me back with information. A nice lady called back and confirm price and name of product that they had in stock. Premiums are high everywhere now so I at less wanted something that I wanted if I was going to pay the high premium. It's outside the city so I had to drive about 20 miles. After getting to the store I talked to lady I spoke to on the phone.. I agreed to buy 2 bars of silver for over 5k.. I counted the money and give it to the lady... then this is where things got uncomfortable and weird... she told a middle age guy to help her get the 2 bars and told him the mints to get.. he for some reason didn't seem happy to be asked to do something? He came back and slammed 2 junk bars on the table.. lady said no and I said no.. he said something like that's what we have deal with it. They begin to argue and I felt uncomfortable. This guy shouldn't work with customers. The lady was in shock said sorry I go get them.. mind she still had my 5k in her hand as she left... think she should left money at counter. Guy seemed very frustrated at situation that I was there buying something or he had to work. She came back handed me my money back in full. And apologize for giving me wrong information. That the bars she agreed to sell... where already sold to someone else?? I wouldn't have been to upset wasting my time and gas..but the guy had a really bad attitude and was disrespectful.. not just to me but also to the lady trying to help me.. Learn from my mistakes. Before you sell your coins, do your homework. Look up their value in the Blue Book. Make a list of what you have and what they're worth and bring it with you. The owner will try to rush through your coins, not telling you the value of any of them, and give you a total that is very low, hoping you'll accept it. Don't! Instead, have him go through the coins individually and keep track of how much the owner says he'll give you for them and see how that compares with your research. If you're not satisfied with his offer, take them home. I wish I had done this and regret the day I sold our coins to Camino Coin. read more

My husband and I had the most unbelievable awful customer service experience of our lives. I placed an order online per their website instructions, paid via debit card (the funds were taken out instantly) for pick up later that day. When I arrived to pick my order. I was told by a lady working there that my transaction was voided and that I could only pay with cash. My husband showed the lady that the funds were already taken out . My husband requested to get a receipt so that we could show our bank the transaction had been voided and our funds could immediately be released. The ceo of the company overheard my husband request and responded with accusing him of trying to pull a scam. My husband and i have traveled the country and met/conducted business with people from all walks of life and never experienced open prejudice/ discrimination like this. read more

My last order took one month and several harsh back and forth before finally getting them to mail the coins and giving me the tracking number! I got fast service and a fair price for the Krugerrand I went in to sell. I'm taking off a star because the older woman sitting at the front desk was, frankly, a bitch--both to me and the customer who came in after me. What happened? Well, I called and got a quote. The man said, "If you come in and sell that coin, we'll pay $1102.50". So I got the guy's name and told him I was headed over, and immediately went in to sell. I was in the store literally 20 minutes later. I went to the counter and told the older woman and a younger girl that I'd talked to a George, who had quoted me $1102.50. The older woman, without even saying hello, snaps (and I mean snaps) 'That coin is only worth $1094 now! The price of gold has gone down in the past 20 minutes! It's your responsibility to get a sale number to finalize the sale when you call for a quote! Did you get a number?' I told her that I'd called, given my name, gotten a quote, gotten the name of the agent and promised to come in immediately to sell...but she continued to bicker with me, finally saying that she'd pay the $1102.50, but that she was being nice. I asked her why, if I'd gotten a name and a price, given my name and made an agreement to come and sell at that price right away, why her employee hadn't given me a number? What kind of customer service is that, really? She mumbled something I couldn't hear. The customer that came in after me got berated for a mistake the woman had made--she had written a receipt wrong and overpaid the guy by $100, and she was more or less demanding the money back. Very impressed with this family run business. Gold had reached $1560 an ounce and I wanted to sell 11 ounces of gold (bars and coins) along with some silver. I called over 30 places and the disparity in what buyers were willing to pay was unsettling. Some places were asking for a $250 commission on each piece, what a joke. Camino Coin in Burlingame offered me 1% under spot for the Suisse .999 1 ounce bars and 4% under spot for other "odd shaped" pieces. I called in before I drove down from Berkeley, asked for a quote over the phone, and asked for the name of the consultant. Since the price of gold changes per minute, I checked the price again on kitco.com right before I walked in. Phil added up the pieces, gave me a breakdown, and wrote down what he was willing to pay. I took my time doing the math and the total he was offering was more than fair. He cut me a check, I walked 2 blocks to Wells Fargo and deposited it. It posted 2 days later. These people were very professional, nice, and more than fair. I will not hesitate to use these folks again for buying or selling gold/silver.
