But the best part of the experience at Burlingame J&L was that I was quoted 30% more for my jewelry than the 2 other pawn shops I visited. If you want the most value for your merchandise, visit Burlingame Jewelry & Loan.

On June 26, I sold a lot weighing 50.6 grams. Based on the gold price that day, even assuming the…read moreentire lot was only 14K, the melt value was approximately $3,861. I was paid $2,800 for that portion of the lot, which works out to approximately 72.5% of melt value. I had understood that the payout would be 80% of melt, so I was surprised when I later calculated the numbers. What concerns me most, however, is the evaluation of several natural gold nuggets that were included in the sale. I was told they were 14K. Later, I took similar nuggets from the same family collection to another reputable gold buyer for evaluation. They carefully tested them and identified them as approximately 22K, offering me a price consistent with that higher purity. That experience made me seriously question how my original transaction had been evaluated. I later called Burlingame Jewelry & Loan to better understand the payout and to give them an opportunity to explain the calculations. I was told only that I had signed the paperwork and that the transaction was final. My questions about the purity testing and valuation were not addressed. I understand that gold buyers need to make a profit, and I have no issue with that. I never expected 100% of melt value. In fact, I would have accepted a lower payout if I believed the evaluation had been accurate and transparent. What I expected was an honest assessment, proper testing, and a clear explanation of how my payout was determined. Fortunately, I later worked with another shop in San Mateo. They tested each piece in front of me, explained every calculation, answered every question I had, and offered approximately 85% of melt value. Because they were transparent and earned my trust, I ultimately sold a much larger portion of my late grandmother's estate there and will continue to do business with them. This experience taught me that knowledge truly is power when selling precious metals. My advice to anyone considering selling gold is to educate yourself, understand what you have, know the current melt value, ask questions, and always get multiple quotes before selling. I wish I had done that before my first transaction. This review reflects my personal experience and why I would not return.
