I bookmarked this spot for the seasonal spider lillies. After self-paying the admission fee and…read moreparking, the walk along the shore was quite pleasant on a mild day. Despite the river views, it took a half hour or so to get to the spider lillies, which are apparently limited to one particular location. It was hard to see them from shore, made harder by rising waters (the festival the previous day was likely thrown off by rain). I got enough of a glimpse of them to understand where the name comes from. The overall aesthetic of the park offered remnants of a historic canal, and boating and picnicking opportunities. It was a pleasant space, but not at the top of ones I'd want to drive out to and pay for.

The Rocky Spider Lily's are only located in certain areas ( SC, GA, and AL). Hoping to see them in another state as well. Its all about timing, make sure you check the websites for a bloom updates. The park is well kept and bathrooms are clean, which is a plus. During the Lily Festival parking is limited, so pack your patience. You will get parking, so no worries. The cost is $6 for each adult, very reasonable considering. They have a store with maps for the walking trails, its approx 1mile roundtrip to see the Lily's. If you want to see them up close and personal you must rent a canoe prior to coming. The park doesnt rent boats, a outside company will take you on a tour. I actually enjoyed the nature trails. They have a nice platform for viewing the lily's. The lily's are absolutely breathtaking, I truly enjoyed my day at this park. The trails are fairly short and well taken care of. There are some food and artisan vendors at the park. Tip: dont touch the lily's if your on a boat, all parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested. Please do your own research beforehand. We did 7 miles on and thru the trails along the river. We started at the river park entrance off the industrial highway (I'm not good with directions) and ended at the River Walk by the Pump House before turning around. It was a great workout with some hills but the views were the Star. Old bridges, big metal bridges, swings on the river banks and wooden trails thru the woods' this place is a gem. Can't wait to go back

The trail I spotted is clearly marked with blazes. It's not handicapped accessible with a few scrabble areas and some felled trees that would need to be stepped over. The hike would likely land on the "easy" end of the scale and it's very pleasant to walk through the woods. The sign indicates that the park closed November 4 and is estimated to be complete in late Spring 2020. Users of the Piedmont Medical Center Trail at 100 Celriver Road can still access the trail. Secure your vehicle, take a deep breath and get ready for a short climbing hike. This hiking trail probably rates as a moderate as it is little more than a gravel and dirt access road to the top. It starts off with a pretty swift incline but as it starts to corkscrew around Nanny's Mountain, it levels off a bit. And before you know it, you're at the top. There is a right turn just before the summit There is a clearing at the top and a large shelter that seems to be set up as a meeting place with a lectern and three rows of seats facing it. There are a couple of trash cans and that's it. No power, no barbecue grill and definitely no restrooms. Be prepared for that. There's also not much of a view from the summit. As it's January, the trees are quite bare so I could see some of the curve of the lake, but that's it. Occasionally, a plane on its way in to CLT. But no view of the skyline or of the surrounding area. I kind of want a view as my reward for a hike/climb. Not one here. Still, it was a nice and peaceful walk. And remember, never hike alone! We've been starting to explore Charlotte's greenways a bit more recently…read more Previously, we parked at Pineville-Matthews Rd and walked to the Vista Grande Circle parking lot (2 miles one way). This section is the McMullen Creek Greenway. So this time, we parked at Vista Grande Circle and walked to the Johnson Rd parking lot. This is also 2 miles one way on the McAlpine Creek Greenway right until it meets up with the Four Mile Creek Greenway. The parking lot on this side is only big enough for 3-4 cars, but you could probably park on the street in the neighborhood as well. We really enjoyed this section of the greenway, probably a little more than the previous section. There were boardwalk sections here as well. There was a lot more marshy flood plane area here which was cool. If you're looking for a way to get outside in Charlotte, explore your local greenways.

Lots of runners, walkers, bikers, people with their dogs. It was safe and clean with a few trash bins along the way (always appreciated when I have bags of dog waste to throw out!). Parking lot seemed large enough for a Sunday morning. Dogs enjoyed seeing a little frog for the first time in their lives. We will certainly be back! Finding shaded walking trails for the dogs can be difficult and this was nice. The porta potties could be smelled from quite a distance away so I would avoid those.

Get out of the city by staying mostly in the city. Big Rock Nature Preserve is a good place for…read moresome fresh air and a bit of exercise. Located in the middle of a residential neighborhood, you would never expect moderate dense forrest that feels so far removed from civilzation. Yet here it is. The only real hint of a city is the hum of car tires on 485 which the preserve backs up to. But you can easily get lost (figuratively) in the rustling of the leaves and forget all about the freeway. Park on the side of the street and hike in. You'll soon walk across a a little foot bridge. Then on to the parks namesake, some big rocks. There is one interpretive sign which tells a bit about the area. Continue on past that and the big rocks down the hill and to the swampy creek. As the lady we passed on the trail described it. There is a narrow portion of trail next to a small cliff following the stream. Then turn and head back up the hill and out. Congratulations, you have completed a walk of about half a mile. It isn't much. And not especially strenuous. My grandparents who are in their 80s were about to do it. This is just a good place to get into nature, get in your steps, and not have to go too far to do it.

We both looked at each other thinking the same thing, this is not going to be what we thought. The real attraction here is the rock. It's massive and appears to have been there for many years. It appears that it was been work overtime by water flow as it has unique indentations that are what you see in rocks by fast flowing rapids. We went in early March and it was nice and cool and the leaves were not out so you can get a clear view of the forest. You can hike this thing in maybe 20 minutes and not get you heart rate up.

It's a nice local park. Useful for taking kids out to play catch, taking a dog out to run, taking…read morebikes for very light trail practice. The benefit is it's proximity to 160 and charlotte highway, the wide 15-20 ft lanes (enough to set up a small game of football or to practice on a bike or with a RC vehicle). The bad is that the trail is behind some houses and seems to be the product of a sewage system. So it's got some strange drain pipes sticking out all over. Not in the way just an eye sore. Another drawback is it's short. Maybe 2/3 of a mile. Then it seems to end at the Compucon business parking lot. Overall a quiet and nice little park. If you're creative you can make a lot out of it and make a quick 1 mile back and forth from the parking lot. No lighting. Some nice stone features and a tiny tiny creek.
