We are furious and honestly still shaken after what our daughter experienced at Camp Hollywoodland, and parents deserve to know exactly what happened. Last summer, our daughter got her first period unexpectedly while at camp -- scared, confused, and away from home. Instead of receiving basic care or compassion, she was met with obstruction and what we believe was outright negligence. Staff told us the camp did not have supplies and required us to bring them ourselves, while camp policy prevented us from even speaking to our own child during one of the most vulnerable moments of her young life. We were repeatedly told she was "fine." The very next day, campers were taken to a water park where our daughter, who still had no guidance or support, was reportedly not allowed to wear shorts or bring a towel. When she began menstruating publicly and asked to use the restroom, she was denied multiple times and forced to wait until the group finished eating. She was left humiliated and exposed in front of her peers while the adults responsible for her care refused to help. When we picked her up, she completely broke down, describing an experience that was humiliating and traumatic. No child should ever be made to feel ashamed or powerless for a normal biological milestone. What makes this even more disturbing is what followed. After multiple attempts to address this with leadership, Camp Hollywoodland chose to defend and justify staff behavior rather than accept responsibility. The response we received made it clear that protecting their policies mattered more than acknowledging the harm done to a child. This is an all-female camp -- a place that should understand and support girls through normal developmental changes. Instead, our daughter was left without dignity, without guidance, and without protection when she needed it most. I went on google today to are if this camp was up and running... I went to this camp 18 years ago. The experience was amazing! Camp songs, soo many activities, arts and crafts.. the outdoor movie night.. The activities and fun was endless. I was amazed at how much fun I had.. I over came my fear of heights with the obstacle course in the trees.. meeting new friends, the food was amazing! The trip to the amusement park at the end of the week was the cherry on top.. this camp was AMAZING! Safe! I remember the camp dogs they had two dogs one was a golden retriever. I came to this camp in 1994, when I was about 13, for two weeks with my very best friend in the entire world. We had a blast. We were in the same cabin, and because she was smaller than me, I let her take the top bunk. I remember swimming, horseback riding, singing by a campfire every night. Always a picky eater, I probably ate nothing tortillas and whipped cream while I was there. I'm sure the food was good enough, though, as I was as weird a child as I am now in adulthood. This was a great place to be creative, I know we tied lanyards and towards the end of our stay, we produced and performed a skit that was a hit with our fellow campers. Camp Hollywoodland was everything that you picture when you imagine a summer camp, from sunburns and mosquitos to roasted marshmallow s'mores and ghost stories- a five star experience every little girl should have. read more

Kay Kay Cool-ay!!!! There are a lot of reviews here by people who are reminiscing about their childhood experiences and so I wanted to leave a more current review for those considering sending their daughters here. Some may consider this camp a "best kept secret" but I would rather the word keep getting out so this place can continue to stay open for future generations! I am not a SoCal native so had never heard of Camp Hollywoodland until I had kids and was looking for a sleepaway camp option that wasn't too far from home. This camp is fantastic. My daughter has now been several times since first attending in early 2017, both to the summer camp and the Girls' Getaway weekends. We've also done the Mother/Daughter weekends which is a great way to check it out with your girl before summer and have some camp fun of your own. They do the girls' only getaways and bring-your-parent weekends in the fall and the spring; as of this writing they're about $110 per person which includes all activities and meals (from dinner Friday through breakfast Sunday). Each session has a theme, which might be anything from Star Wars to Mystery Madness to Hawaiian Luau, but they are all a lot of fun! The camp is a great intro for first time sleepaway campers since their summer sessions are shorter than your average sleepaway camp and include a field trip (beach, theme parks, etc). As of this writing each week's session is $400-450/ for 5 nights, M-F. The camp has a swimming pool (open in summer only), rock climbing wall, beach volleyball court, archery area, arts & crafts room, and fun, professional staff that has very low turnover (with fun counselor names like Cheetah, Amoeba, Cricket, Saffron, and Vanilla!). The food is really good too (seriously, kid and mother approved), and is prepared by dedicated kitchen staff in a modern dining hall: think spaghetti & meatballs, build-your-own tacos, pancakes with bacon & eggs, etc. There is a salad bar as well as vegetarian/vegan options. At drop off, before they are allowed to stay at camp each girl is checked for lice or anything potentially contagious. Sleeping arrangements are in longhouses up on the hill; each one contains 8 or 9 metal bunk beds with plastic covered mattresses (pack a twin fitted sheet), and basic closet space, so it's pretty spartan. At least one counselor sleeps with their assigned set of girls who are grouped by age (7-8, 9-10, etc). They no longer allow cabin buddy requests but camp is small enough that friends will definitely see each other, while making new friends :) There is heating, but no AC. Bathrooms are attached to most of the longhouses, with sinks outside and showers/toilets inside. It's not super fancy (all the buildings except the dining hall/multipurpose rooms seem like they were probably built in the 50's or earlier) but it's definitely "real camp" with campfire singalongs, s'mores, and all the girl-empowered camaraderie you can imagine. It's out in nature and feels much farther away than it is (just a 5 minute drive up the road from Franklin Ave. in Hollywood). As you can read from the other reviews a lot of the girls that go there are 2nd and even 3rd generation campers, it's been around that long. Everyone we have met there has been really nice and laid back. My daughter looks forward to going whenever she can, and I love that she gets a break from suburban life (and technology!) to experience a great week in nature with other girls from all over LA. As far as enrollment goes, there is definitely a finite number of spots and summer camp does sell out so you need to sign up early, especially the Disneyland week (field trip tickets are included in the price of camp, holla!). The only real pain point I have is that because this is all through LA Parks and Rec the registration process is very old school, and you can't do it online (but I think they are working on that). You either have to mail in your application or drop it off in person, and then wait for a snail mail letter to confirm your registration is complete. Call to make an appointment to drop off your application and you can get a sneak peek at the dining facility. I don't think they do tours but it can't hurt to ask. read more

It's the best experience ! Girls grow up in a family environment with adults who treat campers like their own kids. Girls come back years after years and still return to work there ! Wow.. It's been ages since I was last here. But I recall it was sometime between the mid 80's early 90's. I still don't remember how I was able to get to go. I met some friends here and the most memorable experience that I can recall was the time we were given "mint certs" when we went into a cave and saw how little sparkles came from our mouths when we but into them. I fell in love with this place and I still remember that trip to the caves to this day. It seems that that trip is no longer available for reasons unknown to me, but regardless of that, I'm glad I had that opportunity. Thanks for the memory Camp Hollywoodland ^_^ read more

I have a wonderful memory as a small child with asthma hiking up to the Hollywood sign. I was in girl scouts and we went to this camp called Camp Hollywood. I learned how to shoot bows and arrows, and we did arts and crafts, there were 3 legged races, all that group activity stuff. I was the best 2 weeks of my tiny little asthmatic life. Yet I can't find any information on this camp anywhere at all. I had a sweet mustard yellow 50/50 t-shirt that said camp hollywood on it in fancy writing in navy blue. I know it was real. Love this place!!! A place I feel comfortable enough to allow my daughter to attend. The staff is amazing, welcoming and knowledgeable.

I went here as a kid from 1991-1997, for every summer! BEST camp. Its a sleepover camp and it goes a week at a time. Every week has a different theme. My favorite was the Hawaiian or Sea themes. Counselors have crazy names and are super cool. Yummy food too. Lots of swimming, cool field trips and so much fun. I went here until I was 12 or 13. This is the best kept secret for girls sleep-away camps! It is located in the Hollywood hills / Griffith Park area. My daughter has gone 2x and comes back so happy and re-energized. She has met so many sweet kids and loves every experience there. The cabins house about 12 girls / bunk beds with 2 councelors for each cabin. We will continue to go every Summer and during the weekend getaways. The food is awesome, the councelors are fun & caring and they have wild, unique names ! As a little girl growing up in Los Angeles, I remember this camp! I have a picture too with the sign in the background and remember hiking up to the Hollywood Sign. I remember the trampoline that was built into the ground and the bows and arrows and all the activities, I also remember a scary house that was in view from the camp. I almost hate to give it the positive review it deserves because I want to keep it my little secret, but you know what? This camp is super and the counsellors so enthusiastic, caring, and responsible, I have to say a huge THANK YOU to Hollywoodland Girl's Camp for taking care of my kids the way that you do! My oldest daughter, who is now 12, has been going since 9, and the first week-long get-away she went to, she came back home and said that it was better than going to Disneyland, staying at the Disneyland Hotel, and getting the speed pass (for 2 days)! It's the kind of old-fashioned fun that you used to have (before cell-phones, TV's, Play-stations, and Wii games) that keeps drawing my girls back to this camp every Spring and Summer. They come home singing camp songs, bubbling over about the new friends they made, comparing outdoor experiences, and enthusing over their counsellors. The funniest thing... my older daughter, the 12 year old, begs me not to tell any of her friends when she's going... she loves the experience of not knowing any one in her cabin, and then meeting new friends. How cool is that? I love the fact that Hollywoodland is so embracing and encouraging of who you are that my daughters can feel comfortable with so many strange new faces. I went to this camp from 1968 until 1974 when I became a CIT then a counselor. The times I spent at this camp were the best in my life and I still am friends with a couple of the girls I met while going. What a wonderful experience. I hope it is as good now as it was then. We were called the Jive 5 and we were 5 girls who met there every Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall...Think my parents have a financial stake at that camp. My daughter just returned from a week at this camp, and she had a great time. Some of the highlights: singing around the campfire, seeing a coyote up close, riding roller coasters at Knott's Berry Farm (they go on a field trip each week.) She made new friends, and she liked the food. Her only real complaint was that the pool was too cold. This may seem odd, but I went to this Camp in 1958 --Yes! almost 50 years ago! Had the time of my little-girl life. I have never forgotten the fun I had, the crafts I learned, the swimming, the horseback riding and the best time at meal time! The camp fire in the evening, the wonderful Counselors that we all loved. We had a tradition that after the meal was over, the table who had the most clean plates and dishes got a reward! We all thought this was the best thing! We won the award one day after an inspection...and lo and behold, we had hidden a dirty bowl in the center in hopes no one would find it! We (my sister and I) still remember when we revealed the dirty bowl--boy the whole room broke up in cheering and jeering, Such fun we had. Still have all the letters we wrote and received while at camp. Summer of 1958 cost $17.20 for sixteen meals and five nights. My parents sent us both--could barely afford it and I love them for extending themselves for us. Memories live forever! read more
