Somehow we were missing our water hose and Rick offered to loan us his to fill up our tank AND he offered to pick one up at WalMart that night (we gave him money, of course). If you follow my camping adventures, you know that I'm not usually fond of camp hosts. Seriously, I've run into a few doozies in my days. We arrived on a Saturday in May and the RV sites with hookups were full, but we scored a spacious primitive site big enough for our RV AND truck. The primitive sites are was somewhat wooded and private, but the spots on both sides of us were empty, which gave an illusion that it was somewhat private. We loved this campground and the lake so much, we stayed an extra night and all day the next day, Monday. Our neighbor said that the hosts are lenient on weekdays unless someone has the site booked, they don't mind if we check out later. This time, on Sunday, people were checking out and there were plenty of sites available with water and electric hookups. We had a phenomenal site this time, #51 but #52 was better. Also, the campground favorite is apparently #60, but I wouldn't recommend it due to the location being in the path of the boats and trucks using the ramp. Both 51 and 52 were paved black top, which made the rain aftermath not that bad either. THE LAKE!!! I fell in love with Rough River Lake. That's right, move over Nolin River Lake, this holds my title this year. I did hate that you can't swim near the dock... or anywhere around the campground. There's plenty of spots that would be accessible, but there are signs specifically posted 'NO SWIMMING'. The state park is pretty close by though and there is a beach there, if you must get your swim on. Otherwise, fishing is the water activity going on at this campground. There isn't hardly anything close, so come stocked up. The state park lodge has a restaurant and there is a restaurant called 'The Dam', but I wouldn't recommend either one. Robby's Quick Stop about five miles away with basic items in addition to fishing bait. It's about a two hour drive from Lexington, well worth every minutes worth of commute.

A couple years later my parents upgraded to a lake house, and they come down here almost every weekend (Even in the winter!!) I try to make it out here at least a couple times a year and it's always a fun time. The lake is gigantic and absolutely beautiful to cruise on. The surrounding neighborhoods have lovely homes and friendly people. All of the facilities that I have visited at this state park have always felt clean and nice. I could easily recommend this park to anyone. It is way out in the country off of the highway, but it is well worth it for a relaxing weekend in the sun!

There is a dump station with 2 sites. The reservation check in has ice and fire wood, but it's hit or miss if someone is there to help you. We never even officially checked in because no one was there. We stayed on electric site #2 and it was perfectly shaded and quiet. The sites are nice and level with large spaces for games, hammocks, dogs, etc. Just outside the campground is the beach, park office and lake access for boats. The beach is small, but maintained well. We went on a 95+ degree day and the lake water felt like bath water, it was so warm. The lake was busy with a lots of boats and lots of beach goers. The park is pretty small, it mostly encompasses the lake, and there is not much around there. It take 40 min to get to the interstate and close to an hour to reach Mammoth Cave.

If tent camping place food in car overnight if possible. I'm surprised no one reviewed the beach area on Yelp. It was hard to find. We drove a ways to Nolin State Park public beach. Small area but just right if you're looking for sun, sand, and water. There is a concession stand that was open from 1-7 pm. I thought that was brilliant and convenient. Overall wonderful experience! We would return.

We walked the loop before bedtim, trying to get a break from the loud noise, but realized the ENTIRE LOOP was affected by the loud generator. When there are plenty of sites with electrical hookups, generators should not be allowed Be considerate of your neighbors, leave the LOUD generators at home, and book a site that comes with electricity

The campground is normally well manicured, a genuine camping experience with the amenities of a bath house and certain sites having electric and water. The only thing I could dock stars for (but figure it's part of camping anyway), would be the bath house. The sheer amount of spiders and large insects lingering around at all hours is insane, especially when showering or dropping the deuce, as 8 legs come hauling ass your way! The campground has become increasingly packed on weekends with many of the sites being booked months in advance. That's fine by us. Our schedule allows us to be off while the majority of the workforce is hard at it. We absolutely love being at the campground through the week, especially while school is in session. This allows us to sometimes be the only campers in the area and the waters of Nolin lake to be like glass. The campsites vary in length and layout as well as some that offer electric and water. They all have a picnic table, lantern hook and a fire ring with grill top. Just bring a tent and some chairs, don't forget the graham crackers, chocolate and the marshmallows and make memories that you and your family will cherish forever. You will see plenty of deer and wild turkey in the area throughout the year. Many of the sites have lakefront footage as well, allowing you or loved ones to wet a line and maybe catch dinner for the evening. Hope your family enjoys your stay as much as mine, Happy Camping!

It was a beautiful area, green and lush, with several areas for picnicking and wading into creeks. There was a lake that people were fishing in. Several old cabins were on the property that added a fun dimension to the area. If we're ever in the area again, we might stop and take advantage of more of the hiking trails.

Upon arriving, we were 30 minutes early, Central Time, so we didn't get to check in yet, though I think we still got checked in prior to 4pm. That was fine. We came from Eastern Time Zone, Sunnyside of Louisville. I had requested a view of lake when I made reservations. A view of the marina was the best they could do, I guess. Upon entering our smoke free room, I found an ashtray full of butts and a lighter on our balcony. I get the rooms are smoke free and perhaps balcony can be utilized for smoking, but why leave butts and lighter on balcony? I called the front desk regarding this and they said they would address it. I then found a credit card, gift card and a pill in one of the drawers. I gave those items to the young lady I met earlier at the front desk. My wife asked her where we could get ice and she said she didn't know. Back to that later. We ate dinner prior to arriving at the "Resort" since we had time to kill. We ate at Little Dave's which was fine. See my review on that establishment. The pool was open when we arrived but closed not long after. We drove around the "Resort" park and found the beach was closed with No Swimming signs posted. Hmm. There is a trend started here. Wifey and I like playing mini golf and sometimes disk golf when we visit State parks. It was quite hot during our stay so we went to play a relaxed game of mini golf our first night just after sunset. We could see during the first half of the course and saw a maintenance person drive up, get out of the cart and appear to go to a power box of some sort on the opposite side of the course we were at. Wifey asked me to ask him if he could put the lights on, but I didn't feel like yelling to him and told my wife he saw us and would surely put lights on if they worked. Nope. Wrong answer. We played the second half of game in the dark. The following day we learned the pool was closed for maintenance. The trend continues. We decided to get out of dodge and the "Resort" to find something to do. Apparently, there used to be a Nature Center on the "Resort," but no longer. No pool, no beach and the mini golf course needed cleanup from debris on it. I stopped by the front desk, told the young lady where guests could find ice and her mature co-worker agreed with my comment. I then asked if the mini golf course lights were inoperable. I was told they should work. I said we would play later on when we returned from a day out of the "Resort," if the lights were on. We visited Leitchfield and had a fair day shopping and dining at Bluegrass BBQ. You can read that review also. We didn't care to try the restaurant on the "Resort" since everything was trending negative, plus the Park's restaurant was voted last for dining in the area. Go figure. When we arrived back from our trip to Leitchfield, we saw the lights were already on, though it was still light out. I thought perhaps the trend is getting better, but wait for it. When we went to golf, my wife said it looks like they cut the grass around the mini golf course. She was correct. It was clear they cut the grass, because the grass was blown all over the debris that was still present from the day before. That course could be nice with a little TLC. I thought to ask the front desk for a blower to help out the maintenance people, but didn't. I figured the answer would be no. I had been told a work order needed to go in to get the lights on at the mini golf course. I'd like to say the AC worked fine in the room. The flashing lights also worked in the room all night. You may want to bring dark blinders when it is time to sleep. My wife said the flashing lights were like fireworks going off all night. If you are a tall person, be prepared to hunch down to get under the shower head and bend way over to use the sink. Who decides where to install things at this "Resort?" Our last item to mention before ending this review is on our way back from the mini golf course, the light for the walkway between parking lot and our room was out. My wife said, "It is aweful dark on this walkway." I told her the LED light on top of the pole is out. Perhaps they need some more maintenance people or a new supervisor. I wasn't even looking for things at this "Resort," but they stuck out like sore thumbs. My wife and I have visited every Indiana State Park with lodging and several Kentucky State Parks with lodging. This one is hands-down the worst. Calling it a "Resort," is laughable. I think if I came to go boating, it may be a bit of a different perspective, but I feel a little reluctant to rent a boat at the State Park due to the trend it displays. Hopefully, the Park superintendent, or whatever they are called, can address these issues so future visitors have a better stay.

The trail guides are amazing and the staff is just honestly top notch. My fiancé and I got engaged here. (So I may be a little bias ). But, the staff worked with my fiancé and his family all the way up to the actual proposal. The staff did a great job playing along (I had no idea my fiancé had planned this)! Once we got towards the end of the trail ride, the trail guide directed us to a nearby field, got me off my horse and distracted me with taking my photo with my adorable horse June, when I turned around-there he was down on one knee. The staff helped make this a day I will remember for the rest of my life & I will be thinking about them on our big day!

Some of the sites were literally steps away from Nolin River Lake. The lake itself is small, but don't let that fool you, it's gorgeous. We decided to go here the Monday before the weekend and there were several lakeside spots available, but by the time we pulled the trigger and actually booked, two days later there weren't any lakeside sites available. We still booked site B6, which was about 6 spots uphill, away from the lake. We still had a distant view of the lake, but the sites in between were a bit annoying. People need to learn camping etiquette... don't walk through people's sites as shortcuts, it's rude. That's not really the fault of the campground though, but speaking of rude... the camp host was a grumpy asshole. The wife wasn't so much, but dude needs to go retire... somewhere up north. I ask questions to figure things out... and here's what I found out: cancellations are no penalty within 24 hours, so those spots that weren't available on Wednesday, were suddenly available on Friday. Too bad we were already set up on Thursday night. Again, rude people! There isn't the usual reservation fee, like there is at other campgrounds. This campground is government run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District... what that exactly means or what difference it is from State Parks, I'm not exactly sure. Many of the sites were shaded, mostly by pine trees. There was only one concrete pad though, the rest were gravel. Friday we were one of the only ones there at the campground, so we explored, walked down one of the secluded primitive sites and cast our fishing poles. I also loved that they have a late check out. Not all of the campers took advantage of that, so we were one of the only ones left around noon on Sunday, checkout day. There are several other campgrounds in the area, including Wax and Nolin River State Park campgrounds. We drove around those campgrounds, and they too had gorgeous sites. If you've not been to Nolin River Lake and like to boat or camp, I highly recommend planning a trip to the Cub Run area.

It has electric/water sites and primitive camping sites. On our last day there, Mr Brown actually came to our camp site multiple times to assist us with getting a camping pass for my disabled husband. They went above and beyond to make sure that our stay at the camp ground was nothing less than perfect. I hope to see them back again next year, as we will be returning.
