2/5 - A Bumpy Ride (Literally and Figuratively) As East Coast implants turned local explorers, my partner and I figured: why not play tourist in our own backyard? With plans to cruise through Foothills Preserve, Mets Park, and Edgewood, we were excited to saddle up on some e-bikes for a scenic Bay Area ride. Unfortunately, Campus Bike turned what should've been a breezy weekend into a bit of a gear-grinding headache. To be fair, if you're on Stanford campus, Campus Bike is pretty much the option for e-bike rentals. Monopoly mode: activated. But with great power comes... well, definitely not fully charged bikes. We rented two e-bikes for an overnight ride and an additional two days--$75 per bike, plus $30/day afterward, totaling over $200+. We thought we were good to go... until we realized both bikes were barely at 50% battery on day one. No biggie--we'll charge them at home, right? Wrong. The chargers for the Velotric Nomad didn't work. 1 out of 2 bikes had a faulty cord & power supply issue. Major buzzkill. Even after returning to swap out chargers, the replacement bikes were still undercharged. Cue déjà vu. To his credit, Aaron really tried to patch things up. He acknowledged the mix-up and compensated us for the inconvenience. Solid customer service effort on his part, but the damage was done. Our riding plans? Deflated. Our weekend itinerary? Scrambled. Our patience? Running on fumes. And if you're not a Stanford local? Good luck finding the shop. Thanks to campus construction, trying to return the bikes felt like navigating a corn maze inside a plastic bag. (Not recommended.) Final gear-check: for the price, the experience didn't quite shift into high gear. The foldable e-bike felt like a tricycle racing a Tesla compared to the Nomad. We wanted to like this place. We wanted to roll away happy. But between faulty equipment and rerouted logistics, Campus Bike left us spinning our wheels--and not in the fun way. read more

This place only makes money because the students would have to go off campus to get their bikes fixed. If you need something quick like a tire change this place is fine they'll just over charge you. Anything else, like electrical or battery issue, they won't even try and fix it. I bought a bike from them and they told us that they can fix any issue if it was a Campus Shop certified bike. A year later, they told me the bike was too old at the time of purchase that they don't carry the parts to work on it so it's out of warranty. Why even sell it then?! They are very rude and unhelpful unless you want to buy a bike from them. read more

I have heard this is a great place to rent bikes from, so if you're renting or buying a bike/accessories then disregard this review. However, I will be going elsewhere for any repairs/maintenance on my bike. I went into the shop needing to borrow a crank puller ($15 on Amazon) and they said that they couldn't lend or rent one out to me because it was store policy. I figured that it was understandable since the store is on a college campus and it's somewhat likely that someone messes it up. I asked how much it would be for them to fix the issue, and they said $25 and 15 minutes. I decided that that was a fine price to pay for speed and convenience, and I left my bike and came back 20 minutes later. They said it would be another 15. This process repeated a few times until i had been waiting for an hour and a half. After they had finally done the job (something i've done before so i KNOW it takes 2 minutes), there was no apology, or even acknowledgement that they had taken 3-4x as long as they said they would. My bike came back with a note on it that said "Do not shift to the lowest gear on the front chainring" and I asked them how much it would be to fix it. They said it would be another $35 and a week, so i went home and fixed it myself in 20 minutes using a screwdriver. Quite literally the only thing that was wrong could be solved by anyone who can tell left from right and follow along with a YouTube tutorial. Tldr: They charge a lot and take a long time for basic repairs that i've seen other bike stores do for free and in 5 minutes. The employees also just assume that you don't know what you're doing at all and that you'll pay extra for them to demystify it for you. They look at different angles to solve a problem and make recommendations based on knowledge, however. Aaron is extremely passionate and extremely knowledgeable about the products in shop thanks to Aaron's help I was able to find a bike that fits my needs for on campus commute. New, used and rentals of miraculous two wheeled human powered bicycles all available. This is a great bike shop for a university. No frills. They get down into the dirt and get the job done. For an on campus bike shop, they are great. Staff is quick and up front about costs. I really appreciated their energy. Very positive. It might help that a cafe s next door. A little java-shot injection can improve anyone's mood. The staff also give great advice and are very accommodating when they aren't busy. They are usually very busy, but sometimes thee is a little window of non busyness. PS: Used bike locks also on sale. read more

This was a great bike rental place! They actually take time to fit you for the right bike and they have a great selection. The entire process of renting the bike is easy and pleasant. I can tell they are now getting really busy since bikes are high in demand. The only reason why I'm giving 3 stars instead of 5 is because my humiliating experience while purchasing my bike rental - The person who rung me up was a bit rude and unprofessional Prior to picking up my bike that day I had just traveled back into town, and I made a few purchases of bike supplies and a large purchase on my credit card the same day. When I make purchases in different locations and back to back my bank can sometimes flag my card believing it's been compromised. Well that happened that day (I didn't realize this until after the fact) - so when I swiped my card for the bike and left the desk to go get bike the guy loudly yells: "your card was declined" in front of the large group of people. I was shocked because I knew I had money and asked one question as to why I needed to write the card number down on a piece paper in addition to swiping - I asked that because I thought that maybe if they ran the card from the paper in addition to me swiping the card, the card was flagged that way. He continued to say no and was yelling and speaking as if I was arguing (which made everyone stare more) but I was just calmly asking one follow up question to get a better understanding. I got out another card paid and left. Im a nurse at Standford, I could afford the bike. I already felt humiliated that my card was declined for something so minor (that was my problem and I understand that.) But I felt even more humiliated to be instinctually treated as if I was trying to get away with taking a bike without paying or something. As a black person, in Palo Alto I already felt uncomfortable at the bike shop ( b/c there are barely any black people in Palo Alto and even fewer that bike) When a simple incident happened Like that completely felt affirmation of potential stereotypes. I just wish they could be a little more sensitive situations like this next time and not assume someone is trying to steal the bike and start yelling. I left feeling really uncomfortable. read more

My rear wheel got detached from my bike because someone tried to steal the bike, so I took it here for fixing since it's the closest. The guy outside fixed it in no time and even helped to pump the tires. And all of this was free! Highly recommend! read more

Reading the reviews for this place is mystifying to me. I've been at Stanford for about five years now and visited the Campus Bike Shop probably five or six times. Each time I've been there, the staff has been condescending and short with me, and whenever I have brought my bike in I've been greeted with a lot of smirks and derision. Maybe it's because I own a super cheap bike and do a lot of my own maintenance. Whatever the reason, it feels undeserved, as both times I have paid the shop to fix up my brakes they have done a horrible patch job that broke again in less than a week. When I finally decided to do it myself, with a little flipping through my owner's manual I fixed the brakes in about 45 minutes. I'm definitely not coming back to this place. Two stars for the location. I suppose if one were to receive good service here, proximity to Tressider would be convenient. However there are bike maintenance stations all over campus, so I don't plan on coming back here. read more

We asked him tips for properly locking up bike (don't forget to put a cable lock on your seat!!) and 50 other questions -- he was patient & thorough in his explanations. Total rip off. I had a flat on one of "tubeless" tires (which requires a tad bit of sealant fill), instead of an inner tube replacement. I had this problem once before and stopped by BIKE CONNECTION to get it done, the mechanic there charged me $8 for the job (it's a 2 minute job). I went to the Campus Bike store the next time I got a flat and they charged me $20 !!! The mechanic was rude and the cashier was cavalier. Will definitely not be back here! read more

I went today for service. The guy who looked at it was very nice. He rode the bike and figured it out what the problem was right away. Then he told me how to fix it which was super easy. This happened after leaving my bike with another shop for over an hour and they couldn't even tell me when they would look at it. I will definitely bring my bike back here. read more

These guys are awesome. I came in one afternoon with a flat tire, and was quoted $17.50 and told I could get it the next day at noon. When I returned, they had not only replaced my inner tube, but also done a full tune-up. I'm not sure what exactly they did, but my gears don't squeak anymore, my brakes actually work, and riding takes much less effort than before. This is an amazing deal considering that buying an inner tube yourself probably costs $10 or so. Previously, I've gone to them before. I purchased a mount for my bike rack for $10 once. Another time, I went to them with a loose kickstand. They tightened it and did a minor tune-up (adjusted my handlebars, inflated my tires) for free! 91/100 read more

I would give a NEGATIVE 5 stars to the annoying woman who took my call. She was extremely rude and it was so uncalled for. There are definitely some friendly and knowledgeable employees here; however, AVOID the crabby 40 year old woman at all costs! Tip: Make sure you reserve your road bike early, they sell out fast. Also they have great deals for daily hybrid and mountain bike rentals (only $25!). Your rental will come with a helmet too. read more

I rented a bike from here for a week to ride while visiting my sister. For a week it only cost $80 for a nice hybrid. I was very pleased with the quality of the bike. The bike selection is good -- albeit overpriced. I suppose that you pay for convenience. The shop is busy and the waiting time can be a little long -- but the service is usually good and the employees seem trustworthy. However, you need to be very careful with your service. I've had two incidents that lowered my review from five stars to three: 1.) Recently, I brought in my bike (that I purchased there) because I had a flat. I was asked by one of the employees whether I wanted a regular tube or a heavy duty tube. I asked the employee what the difference was. He said that the only difference was the fact that a heavy duty tube is more resistant to flats. Since I thought that the heavy duty tube was worth a few extra dollars, so I went with it. I paid the $28 or so, left my bike and returned a few hours later (as instructed) and picked it up. A few weeks later, I decided to add some air to my tires. After adding air to the back tire, I noticed a difference with the valve on the front time (the tube that I had replaced). Unfortunately, this tube didn't have a standard valve but a "Presta" valve. My personal pump doesn't work on it. So, I had to purchase an adaptor. Who would want a "Presta" valve on their front tire and a standard "Schrader" valve on the back tire? Apparently, the employee working at the Campus Bike Shop never felt the need to divulge that this heavy duty tube would have a completely different valve from the standard (and the one on the back tire). It isn't really a big deal -- but it requires a little extra attention and the need to always have a valve adapter with me in case of a flat. 2.) I purchased a nice, new bicycle from the shop. I added a seat lock, U lock and kickstand to my purchase. The shop guys installed everything. However, the kickstand wasn't installed correctly. I tried using it for a couple of months, but the bike doesn't lean enough to make the kickstand viable (and would typically result in the bike falling over). So, I eventually brought it back on a day where the shop wasn't busy and let them know that it wasn't installed correctly. An employee wanted to charge me to reset the kickstand so that it could work properly. After telling him that I purchased the bike there...and that I had a warranty on it, he told me that the warranty doesn't apply to the kickstand or the service. I told him "no thanks" and borrowed some tools and fixed it myself. Still, it is convenient to have a viable shop on campus. However, it will cost a little more to buy a good bike here and it will continue to cost you to get the bike serviced. Moral of the story: Whenever possible, look for "Chris" (I think that he is either the manager). He is almost always there -- and he knows what he is doing. He will bend over backward to help and will always give you an honest assessment of your bike. He worked with us to find the bikes that perfectly met our needs. My wife and I love our bikes and we're usually happy with the service. If I didn't have those two experiences (with the tube replacement/peculiar valve and the kickstand), I would gladly give the place five stars. read more

After relocating to the Bay Area without a car for three months, I was in need of a bike rental badly. I can't say enough good things about this place. Susan and Omar really went out of their way to get my bike ready for pick up, and all of the other staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgable. I now have a rental mountain bike (with free helmet and lock), as well as a few safety add-ons for cheap. The customer service was great, and bike is in good shape. Come here for your bike needs! Update: I just returned my bike without any hassle! One of my headlights was broken after a nasty crash and the employee I spoke with said not to worry at all. No deductions or fees. So I bought a Rad Rover electric bicycle, and had it shipped to my office. I then used a roller dolly to bring it .4 miles to the bike shop for assembly, but unfortunately they don't work on electric assist bikes. The owner's wife, for free, drove me to Mike's Bikes who agreed to assemble it for me, waited, and drove me back. Additionally they sell bike helmets at cost, so get yourself a damn bike helmet! :) read more

These guys are amazingly friendly. I don't ever make an appointment, I just drop my bike off in the morning and it's done by 5 pm the same day. They've always charged me super reasonable prices (or even like $0 for super basic help) and I've learned more about how to take care of my bike. Also, they never judge me for having an older bike, which I greatly appreciate (don't dock my trusty commute steed!). All of their rental bikes are for sale (except road bikes) from $250-$450, I heard the guy say. They also have a pretty good selection of parts. (Including things that aren't on the wall...just ask and you might be surprised what they have lying around that they're up for selling.) This is the place to go for friendly, fast, and affordable service. Plus they usually have a candy dish! Win! read more

My absolute go-to place for getting my wife's and my road bikes serviced. They always do a bit more than you request and pay for. Almost every time we go in for a simple issue (e.g. changing a flat on my wife's Fuji whose tires I just cannot get off with tire levers), the bike comes back with some other minor tune-ups (tires inflated, cables tightened, etc). Their prices are very reasonable for parts and labor -- we've had wheels trued, derailleurs installed, handlebars wrapped, new chain installed, etc. over the past 6 years. You can even bring in your own parts and they'll put them on for you, if you manage to find it cheaper elsewhere (for example, sometimes you can get some better deals on tubes elsewhere). We haven't bought any bikes from here, so we can't speak to that, but do recommend coming in for service for low/mid-end bikes (those with Colnagos and Cervelos may prefer to look elsewhere). read more

This is not the cheapest bike store, but I doubt anyone buys a bike here for the price. This store is all about the convenience. They offer bike packages well designed for Stanford students and make it easy for incoming freshman to pick up their bike. They have repair tools and offer plans for repairs and replacements so that you can get your bike fixed quickly and easily and not have it ruin your schedule. You can probably find better and cheaper bikes elsewhere, but for most of us it just isn't worth the effort. Incoming freshman have enough new and stressful things going on in their lives, simplifying bike purchase is a tremendous help. read more

Since moving to the area, I have taken my bike to these guys and will definitely continue to do so. They have reasonable prices and honest and knowledgeable employees. I had multiple issues with my bike, as well as the need to get accessories and they helped me out with what I needed and were honest with the stuff I didn't need. I bought a U Lock from them and had issues opening it, so I brought it in to be lubricated and after working with it for a few minutes, the employee gave me a new one. Just took it off the shelf, opened it, and put the new key on my key ring for me. All at no cost. I even offered to bring the other key so he could return it to the vendor to get credit, and he told me not to worry about it! It is true that repairs can take a while, but I understand I'm not their only customer and they take their time to do the job right the first time. They also give loaner bikes at no cost if you have yours in their shop. They can order parts they don't carry in stock fairly fast, as they did for me, so I could get what I needed. Came here yesterday to get advice about my bike. While we stood in line, an older woman with a very loose fitting vented mask (which propel particles outward at everybody) came and spoke to us at very close range. While she talked her mask kept falling down off her face. Every once in a while she would stop and try to pull it up over her face again. Really lame. When we finally got to talk to someone he had his mask over his mouth and not his nose and proceeded to mansplain at us at loud volume and rapid speed. When I asked for clarification, he got mad. I get the feeling this guy may be on the spectrum for which I have sympathy but he needs better management and oversight on his social skills and professionalism. I gave this place a review a few years ago and cant find it anymore. I guess its one of those cases where the place pays yelp to remove the review. I'll try to summarize because I do not have the courage to rewrite the review. I tried to sell them a bike which I (well actually my brother who left) bought for $150. The bike had a minor typical break issue which had a very small repair cost. My brother insisted for me to sell the bike. I went there and the guys offered me $5(!!!). I told them it was ridiculous and they told me that this was a really crappy bike. Because of the special occasion I did not even bother to negotiate and gave it to them. A few weeks later the guys were selling that bike for $170!!! Even more than its original brand new condition cost. That's pretty much the summary of my experience with this service. This is what the lack of competition does to the market. I really hope that Stanford students will stop overpaying for services just because there are no easy alternatives around. read more

I've bought 2 bikes from the bike shop, and I've been using their service for 5 years as a student. I'll continue to come here even after I graduate because they provide dependable, fast, cheap service with a free loaner, and they're extremely HONEST and look out for the customer. For example, I went there looking for a tuneup, and instead of trying to upsell me on some service, the employee told me that actually I can afford to wait before getting a tuneup and replacing my tire, and he just put some oil on my chain for free. In contrast, a certain bike shop in Palo Alto tried to get me to unnecessarily replace the same tire 6 months ago. This is a great place for beginner bikers because they don't expect you to know anything about bikes, and don't take advantage of your lack of knowledge. If you buy a bike, make sure to buy the SERVICE PACKAGE because this entitles you to free labor for 4 years - a great deal. read more

I have a very unsatisfactory experience with the Campus Bike Shop. I would love to love it, because of the convenience of its location. So I got a flat tire, and I walked my bike over. They said that the bike was improperly inflated, so the tire popped out. They said it would cost $15, and I was thinking, "Sweet! It's so cheap!" They were super nice, and I came back about an hour later and picked up my bike. The tire was pumped up and felt brand spankin' new and rode smoothly. Thanksgiving Break begins, and the next day my tire goes flat AGAIN! I looked, and it was the same problem as before -- it popped out of the rim. I take it back after Thanksgiving Break ends. They tell me that the bike was improperly inflated! I told them that the tire had just been inflated, and they told me that it must have been overinflated, then. Flabbergasted, I explained to them that I'd come to THEM right before the break, and that THEY were the ones who had inflated the tire. They shrugged it off and and said that I had to pay the $15 again! And the guy who had fixed the tire for me was right there, too! I was infuriated, but I needed my bike, so I coughed up the $15 again. I'm sorry, but I should not have to pay double the price (however cheap), to make up for your own mistake. Honestly, worst customer service ever. They are very nice up front, but if something goes wrong with your repair, it will be you who pays. read more

As a Cal student, I might imminently be stoned to death for five-starring a Stanford institution. I can't help it! The truth must be told! I was here last year to buy a bike while I was living on Stanford campus briefly (I think I hear the pitchforks already). (NB: Stanford is a beautiful beautiful campus, PERFECT for biking. No hills, flat, bike lanes...I'll at least grudgingly give you points on that one.) To complement the perfect biking terrain, Stanford has a bike shop sitting in the student center. Over the summer, the people who worked here were generally high school students (!) who were friendly, knowledgeable, and completely open to helping me pick the perfect bike. The guy who helped me was spectacular. (Davis-bound...Stanford, I guess you lost this one.) He was patient as he listened to my long list of reservations, opinions, incapabilities, and thoughts. When I came back several times during the week after I bought my bike, he was always ready to help me with whatever problem I had, smiling to boot. Makes me the happiest pseudo-biker around. I haven't seen such super friendly service in a long time! We rented two bikes for a weekend at the Campus Shop and the guy that helped us (I wish I could remember his name) was so friendly and helpful. Everybody we talked to there just seems to have a really sunny and positive personality. He helped us pick out the bikes and adjusted them for us. We got one basic and one advanced bike, as well as helmets. He even helped me get them out of my car when I was dropping them off and was in a hurry. The basic bike was $35 for a weekend rental and $85 for the advanced one. Since you have to park on Stanford campus, the parking is paid except for Saturday and Sunday. During the weekend it can be hard to get a spot. Also make sure to put the address in as Stanford and not Palo Alto if you're using the GPS. read more
