I ordered the jalapeño double smash burger with the campus fries--was a little surprised (not necessarily in a bad way) that the fries came topped with a cheeseburger patty. The fries could've used more of their "special sauce," which tasted a lot like Thousand Island and wasn't anything too standout. The first time I gave this place a try, I ordered a double cheeseburger and fries. I had already read plenty of reviews saying the burgers were skimpy on beef, and wow, those reviews weren't lying. I could barely taste the meat. It was basically a bun and a slice of cheese pretending to be a burger. The patty actually tasted good, but calling that thing a "double" was generous. Fast forward a few weeks. I checked the menu online and saw you can add extra patties for about $1.99each, so I figured I'd give them another shot. I drove over with orders for myself and some coworkers, ready to actually taste some beef this time. Instead, I was told they can't make a cheeseburger or double with extra patties unless it's a "5 by 5," which forces you to get five slices of cheese. One slice already smothers the meat, but apparently that's the only way they know how to operate. I told them that's not how we wanted it because it's way too much cheese. Didn't matter. They wouldn't do it. Or couldn't. Hard to tell. So unfortunately, me and my coworkers won't be eating there anymore. The burger patty lacked flavor, all while the campus fries had a lot of sauce, somehow they still tasted bland and overly messy rather than flavorful. I didn't know that a smash burger meant to pound the patty so thin that it is almost see through. Seriously, I have had thicker Canadian bacon - these hamburger patties are a joke. What a disappointing experience today. I love burgers, and have been known to travel miles for a good burger. Sadly, this place is not the go-to spot that I was hoping for. In fact, I won't ever be back to this location or any of their other locations. The fries tasted OK ( after adding a ton of ketchup)- but were nothing to write home about. Interesting place. Everything was very clean, the staff was quite friendly and the prices were ridiculously low. BUT, if I were to go back there I would ask for a dry double cheeseburger and add my own mayo or thousand island sauce and PICKLES! or maybe buy a bag of them to take home and doctor them up there. I really wanted to like this place and was excited to try the Gilroy location today. They pride themselves as the bargain basement version of In N Out but they are no where close to it. The prices are the cheapest for any burger place around. The taste was bland . I can make a better burger at home . They don't use quality beef. The burger just comes with cheese and onions which still had the skin on them and had a burnt taste. The fries were a lot in a large drink cup and they were inedible. The location is not the greatest part of town either close by a stretch of liquor stores. Service is friendly.,place is clean. The chocolate shake didn't taste like a shake tasted like cheap ice cream blended. If you're on a budget this is your spot. For a good quality burger with quality toppings this isn't it. read more

Amongst the plethora of fast food joints in the Fast Food Capital of America lies a new contender for the crown, Campus Burgers. With its smash burgers, fresh cut fries, milkshakes and red and white lettering the newest burger eatery strives to take its patrons back to the simpler days. Upon entry I was immediately met with a friendly young lady eager to take my order. I quickly scanned the menu on the wall and while it wasn't obvious to me what was in the burgers I found out through simple interrogation that the burgers were smashed, sauced with cheese and grilled onions. I asked for one burger without onions which prolonged the encounter. I ordered three burgers, three fries and one chocolate milkshake. While waiting in the restaurant for my to go order it seemed cramped, like a place you wouldn't want to be if really busy. As more patrons piled in, the more awkward the waiting became, jostling to position myself to grab my order when ready. The wait wasn't too bad, about 10 minutes and the food was hot when received. Herein begins the real review... The Food The burgers reminded me of White Castle steamed burgers you get from the frozen food isle. The taste was ok but the meat was so thin I felt like I was eating a children's burger and that's a compliment. I've seen bigger children's burgers. The cheese was cheesy. The sauce was ordinary. The onions tasted like they were out of onions ring. Not exactly what I call grilled. The buns were huge puff daddies and almost made the experience comical just looking at this really thin meat stuffed between two huge burger buns. The fries were mostly an inch long and tasted good, thinking In and Out fries without as much salt. They come in a cup like Five Guys, a tall cup. So I drank my fries as it got halfway down since fitting my adult hand wasn't an option. The milkshake was ok. Better ones at other establishments nearby. Ideas to improve upon, Grill the onions a little longer Thicker meat patties Offer secret sauce, ketchup and salt packets Better location, if you're going to ask customers to come inside without drive through option then have a bigger inside and parking outside So in conclusion, I'd give this place 2.5 stars out of 5. While they're advertising the smash burger and cheaper prices I only noticed a paper burger. Not a great value IMO. It's not somewhere I would go back to because other places nearby do it better. Brand new location in Gilroy so wanted to give it a try. Restaurant had plenty of parking and looked clean from the inside. Customer service was fine as I was immediately greeted by two employees at the door. Food was served pretty fast and so that made me question if my burger patties were in fact grilled after I placed my order. My food wasn't served hot and so the burgers may have been sitting there already. The cheeseburgers are pretty small and are pretty basic. Reminded me of a cheeseburger from a kids menu at Burger King or McDonalds. No lettuce or tomato and very small amount of grilled onions which makes the flavor to these burgers very dull. They should either drop the prices or improve the taste of the food in order to compete in this market. Unfortunately with several other better hamburger options located on 1st Street in Gilroy this will definitely be my last visit to Campus Burgers. read more

Pretty nice place but they are in their first year so that's sort of expected. First time I came I was met buy an obviously trainer for the new staff and everything went great. Patties are pretty small maybe a smidge smaller that in n out accross town. They are cheaper here than there if your a classic cheese with limited condiments. The second time tonight the training staff was gone and I ended up ordering nothing. I wanted to buy meat and cheese patties plain for dietary reasons. I wasn't offered a work around I wa just told "no we don't do that". Well that's what I want. If it can't be done I know super burger 30 seconds away will do it and so will in n out. Lastly the French Fries need fixing and or a different style, brand or quality. Honestly none in my large cup were larger than a inch long. IMPORTANT: This is not about the food or service. In fact, the service was excellent! (5 stars for service!) The staff working the counter were kind, professional and eager to help! The (male) supervisor/manager that helped us was extremely friendly and professional. Also, the establishment was VERY CLEAN and tidy. HOWEVER...... After my companion paid for our order ($21), I was served my "chocolate" milkshake which it was not. At the time of this review, their FB and other socials promote REAL FOUNTAINT milkshakes which is the primary reason we went but this is UNTRUE. The "shakes" are vanilla SOFT-SERVE ICE CREAM from a machine then they drip (not mix) whatever flavor you want OVER the top. What they are calling a "milkshake" is nothing more than a soft-serve sundae in a cup. This is not a bad thing and maybe even delicious but its NOT A MILKSHAKE. Secondly, they DO NOT ACCEPT CASH. I hate to use the "D" word but to not allow customers to pay with cash is "DISCRIMINATORY". This isn't Manhattan, Beverly Hills or Dubai it's small town GILROY!!! By comparison, BREW CITY BURGERS accepts cash (and has REAL milkshakes btw) and so does THE HABBIT BURGER, IN-N-OUT, SHAKE SHACK, FIVE GUYS..... and every other burger joint in town! ....And for anyone who thinks the word "DISCRIMANTORY" is too harsh consider this; people on limited income or no income such as those on SNAP, senior citizens, homeless, people with disabilities, undocumented citizens, or even people who don't have good credit may only be able to use cash. By Campus Burgers not allowing these customers to pay with cash is not just lost business, it is in fact DISCRIMINATORY. The backbone of Gilroy is not a bunch of Silicon Valley "influencers", it's working class people including farmers, field workers, day-workers and families struggling to save enough to take their family out for a burger! Not accepting cash sends a clear message that you don't want their business and you don't support the community. To end this on a POSTIVE note, the gentleman who helped us with the refund was extremely professional, kind and accommodating.... AS WERE WE - we didn't get upset or make a scene. My son took me to a Campus Burger up in San Jose recently after he accidentally tried it and we loved it. Exactly what a good smash burger should be like. We were surprised and delighted to see one near us in Gilroy. We have already been there half a dozed times. And we are picky about our burgers. They are great, simple, delicious. Thanks for opening a store here. I find the negative reviews surprising. But I am happy to report that I have never been there without a full parking lot. My best wishes for your success. The other location I've been to was also very busy. Keep it up. If I had to suggest any changes, it would be to find a tastier chocolate to use in your shakes. They are okay, but not great. Disorganized slow service. A ton of fries prepared just sitting under a warming table getting soggy. They need to go to In & Out and see how a simple menu is prepared. They take your order fast ( your money ) then you wait...people stacked up like cord wood waiting for food. I was order 317 and after 10 people after I ordered were served. I asked why my order had still not been called. The bagger/expediter told me she was waiting on my grandson's burger with no cheese. Mind you there were ten orders with lots of burgers that went out the door. Does the cook not see the orders in order of ordering? Does the expediter not tell the cook that she needs a burger to complete an old order? She did after I called her out and I was out the door shortly after. My mother always said "if you can't say anything nice, then don't say it at all." Mom was not always right. Visited Campus Burger in Girloy and was not impressed. I ordered a cheeseburger and a jalapeño burger with fries at the Gilroy Campus Burger. Both burgers missed the mark, desperately so. This restaurant might be a staple near a college campus for the obvious reason - affordability. I get that, got that and support that - nothing worse than starving students. I see people comparing this place to White Castle, In-N-Out and 5 Guys. Perhaps they are similar in ambiance, but not in cuisine. I've been to multiple White Castle, In-N-Out as well as 5 Guys throughout this amazing country. The portion size is not an issue as it may seem to be for others - small burger and lots of fries in a cup for a good price - check. The issues I have start with the "Secret Sauce." In my most humble opinion, I believe the Campus Burger "Secret Sauce" is the basic Thousand Island dressing that anyone can buy at the Chef's Store in San Jose. Second, I couldn't taste any onions whatsoever. Third, the fries were cold and very, very small - I dipped my fries in the "Secret Sauce" and got more sauce on my fingers than the fries. Lastly, smashing a piece of meat doesn't make it instantly flavorful. Upside, the jalapeño were fresh!!! Given this, I'm going to continue patronizing Super Burger, In-N-Out or The Habit in Gilroy. First of all, no bacon. What's up with that !! Oh well that's ok, so I ordered a cheeseburger, what I got was cold buns with the cheese hardly melted and the thinest hamburger you can possibly make. The fries looked good, but NO Salt.. I know, salts not good for you, but at least a sprinkle. Oh, I looked for a condiment station and there wasn't any.
