The beautiful tile floors and the view of the canal is perfection. Our server was so nice. Excellent customer service. This was my first time there but I was with a local so when the waitress came up she said "Do you wanna start out with hummus & pita?" I figured it would be the ordinary hummus and pita....oh no ma'am. This was pita with marinated meat and the warmest pita on the planet. We really liked our dinner experience at Canal Bistro! The vibes are awesome, huge shaded patio right along the canal with tons of patrons, and the service was very good. I would come back for that alone even to just sit and drink on a cool evening. Drinks were super good. We ordered the dolma, gyro platter, and shawarma platter Only reason I'm withholding a fifth star is I think the food is a bit overpriced for how good it is. First and foremost, they have some of the most friendly and welcoming staff, it really feels like I was invited over for a family dinner. I love when it's patio season as that is (in my opinion) the best seat in the house! Alongside the canal on a fully covered patio? Yes please! This particular day we started with their feta garlic fries, which you can also order spicy. The best appetizer to share amongst the table. The bestie and I were in Broad Ripple around lunchtime and decided to diverge from our usual taco spot and get Mediterranean food instead yesterday. This cute little bistro was the perfect refuge from the heat and we were greeted and seated right away by our server, Skyy. She checked in on us often and made sure that we were taken care of during our visit. She even recognized my friend from a previous visit and sat us the same table she'd sat at before! I wasn't feeling too adventurous, so I ordered the Greek Salad, but added their marinated and grilled salmon on top of it. I also had a mocktail, the Mango Lime Spritzer, which was delightfully refreshing. I loved the balsamic dressing on the salad, but wasn't a huge fan of the "rough chop" done on the veggie toppings. I like more of a dice on my tomatoes and cucumbers, but these were like half-moon slices. Not a huge deal, just a matter of preference; but for that reason, I didn't eat much of the salad. I demolished the salmon, which was seasoned well and grilled perfectly, and ate all of the feta and olives from the salad! My friend ordered the lamb chops...and they were huge! She also said that they were "so good" and "very tender". I think that hits all of the key points when it comes to lamb chops, right?! Also, the presentation of her plate, with a pyramid of rice, made it feel extremely special. Her meal also came with a salad of her choosing and she opted for the Fattoush. I tried a few of the Lebanese pickles that came on the salad, and they were very delicate in flavor. It was a nice divergence from what you expect a pickle to taste like. For her cocktail, she ordered a smoky margarita but immediately informed me that it wasn't that smoky (my girl loves a smoky beverage). My absolute favorite part of the meal had to be the warm pita bread served with oil flooded with za'atar. I hate it when a restaurant is stingy with the seasonings in the oil, but that was not an issue here. That was my first time eating za'atar and I am an instant fan! I'd come back just for that, but I also look forward to returning to try the stuffed grape leaves (dolmades), kafta, fish tacos and kababs. read more

There are not that many Mediterranean restaurants in Indianapolis, and even fewer good ones. I really liked Canal Bistro - it is very cozy and inviting, the menu has lots of options to choose from, and... you're sitting right by the canal. I tried their lamb shank and was very happy with my choice. The meat was very tender, accompanied by flavorful spiced rice and a vegetable salad. The portion is more than enough to feed one person. Check out this very nice venue in Broad Ripple. Was trying to find a spot to park when this very attractive lady, Star, ran into the street and said "we have the lot across the street." Easy. She was the manager (they should pay her more) and got us a very enjoyable outside table. Excellent menu. Fun appetizers. Entry choices were many and varied. This place is delicious! Our server was sweet and had great recommendations. We loved everything we had. Our eyes were bigger than our stomach. I didn't realize they had parking, usually walk there but it was a nice surprise. The plates are decent size and if you're hungry and order an appetizer and a side salad, you won't have room to eat your entree. Which to me is a plus. I love left overs! The gyro sandwich is not what I imagined, no pita bread. It was more like a wrap but the flavor was great! I'd order it again! Sat outside, lovely weather and the space is great. I booked a reservation a table of 7 for a group of friends. It was my first time eating at the restaurant. They have a parking lot and there is street parking nearby. There is indoor & outdoor seating (open in spring). The restaurant has dim lighting and Greek decor. A friend ordered a Merlot red wine bottle for the table. Love Canal Bistro, definitely in my top ten. I love the decor, its low key, but still beautiful. The food is exquisite. I have really enjoyed the sizzling olives as an appetizer and shared the mazza plate. Both are delicious and generous enough to share. You can't go wrong with Greek salad or tabouli, but my favorite is the fattoush salad. I have had many of their sandwiches and entrees, all great? The entree I love best is the shawarma plate. I enjoy occasionally having Mediterranean/Greek food and Canal Bistro was delicious. I've found the Lamb Gyro to be some of the best in town and the service was solid. The staff was very attentive to my party's needs. Also, very generous portions in each order for lunch. I had a lot of garlic feta fries with my gyro. The only downside was its an older building without central air but the decor is nice, yet there are parts of the restaurant that can get hot. We opted to sit inside, but there is plenty of patio seating and can provide a nice patio vibe if desired. It was reasonably priced and the service was fairly quick. We were immediately captivated by the ambiance of this charming Mediterranean café, tucked just off the Monon Trail and set along the water--it's a truly lovely setting. Our server, Faza, was wonderful: personable, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. We came in really wanting to love this place, especially as fans of Middle Eastern cuisine. The mezze sampler offered a preview of what was to come--overall decent, with some highlights and some inconsistencies. The spanakopita, while flavorful, was deep-fried and a bit oily. The tabbouleh was more roughly chopped than expected and somewhat underseasoned, lacking the brightness typical of the dish. Similarly, the Greek salad felt sparse on key ingredients like cucumbers, tomatoes, and olives, and would have benefited from more acidity--perhaps an extra squeeze of lemon. The lamb dishes were where execution fell short. The lamb kabob was overcooked and quite chewy--my friend had to work through each bite. The lamb kofta, though nicely spiced, was also overdone and lacked the juiciness that typically makes this dish so enjoyable. On a more positive note, my daughter did enjoy the gyro platter, even if the meat wasn't as thinly sliced as is traditional. In the end, while the menu shows a lot of promise and the setting is delightful, the execution didn't quite meet expectations. With some refinement in the kitchen--perhaps a recalibration of cooking times and seasoning--this place could truly shine. We'd be open to giving it another try in the future. read more

A little while back I I was taking my mom how I was going to the doctor to get some blood drawn. She was taking my grandfather to do the same so we all went together and after we decided to grab a bite to eat. I'm rarely in the mood for Mediterranean but that's changed since I've been too canal bistro. It was the last nice day of November and there were people enjoying their meal on their lovely balcony. I rounded up to 4 Star. Would have given 3.5. The service was great. All the staff friendly and helpful. The mocktail I had was delicious and refreshing. Ambiance was fine (the bathroom I used, the flush pushed the water tank lid up and it plopped down). The reason for the lower score was because although they make things vegan and vegetarian, the fryers are all the same. So there is cross contamination. Some may not care, but for those of us who do, it does limit options on the menu more. The salad I had was good, but did feel it was overpriced for what you got. You'll notice prices are a little higher, but you get generous portions and complimentary pita bread with oil and herbs. This visit I opted to try the spicy tilapia as a sandwich/wrap and really enjoyed the combination of flavors with the perfect hint of spice. Canal Bistro happens to have some of the best outdoor seating in Indianapolis, right off the Broad Ripple canal with a large covered porch! Due to my soy allergy, I called ahead of time to ensure that items on the menu could be eaten by me. The owner assured me that the only soy used was a combination of soy and oil used for frying. Love the thought of this place. My wife and I have been here three times. The first time it was good food, but it was busy and we felt we were forgotten. It took about 30 minutes to put in our order. We let it slide and went here with friends before going to an event. The second visit was a lot of fun. We had drinks and shared appetizers. We sat at the bar and enjoyed ourselves. That second visit caused us to go back. This was not good. We ordered Spanakopita and Stuffed Dolmathes for an appetizers. The spanakopita was frozen in the center and the dolmathes tasted off - sour. We brought it to the manager's attention who said she could microwave it a little more. We didn't want microwaved food. Great pita, too! Whatever the spiced oil they gave us for dipping was - I loved it! Nonalcoholic mixed drinks also available which was nice. Chicken shawarma salad was sooo good. The vinaigrette they used was top notch. The meat was succulent and well seasoned - not dry at all!
