Now, I'm pretty lame and I don't buy that much wine/liquor these days -- so I'm by no means a "regular" -- but whenever I go in, the employees always offer to help (unless of course they're busy at that moment, then I wait if I need to ask anything). On a recent trip to replenish my bourbon supply (for 'tis eggnog season and that's the only way to drink it), one of the owners said he had 2 open bottles in the back. He went to fetch samples of each. Stellar service! He also let me know about the upcoming bourbon and whiskey raffle and tasting the next weekend. Btw, I went and it was a wonderful event (though pacing yourself is essential). I also have the employees recommend wines based on my tastes or whoever I'm buying for, and price range. I've never been steered wrong. It is not until I check out that anyone even knows whether I'm a loyalty member - I am, having signed up for a card to get reward points to redeem for discounts (takes 2 seconds). The checkout employees are always friendly and helpful also. During the holidays, they offer free gift wrapping for your purchases - which I LOVE since I tend to give booze a lot and I hate having to wrap things. Perfect gift, btw, because who doesn't love booze?! As to being unable to buy certain merchandise - I have not encountered this, but have no problem with a business rewarding its loyal customers with reserving certain rare products. The point of the aforesaid bourbon raffle is to let people buy rare bottles at cost - other places just mark them up until they're unaffordable. Here, they spread the love. Bottom line: They care about their customers. They stock a wide variety of quality products to fit various budgets. They know their stuff. I've always had a great experience and will keep going back. Luckily for me, it's right around the corner from where I grew up, so I've stopped here a few times for last-minute bottles for trips or nights out on the town. I most recently needed a flask for a wedding, and they surprising had a few different options for me. The liquor selection is decent, having all of your major brands, jack, jim, patron, grey goose, captain's, among others. I haven't had to stop there for wine, so I've never looked at its selection, but seems pretty decent, based upon its size. The prices you pay are for the convenience, it's no Premiere. It's not outrageous, but I know it's a few dollars more than I should be paying. However every time I've stopped it, it's been the owner working the counter, so I don't feel all that bad paying a little more helping him out.

I went in to buy a magnum of wine clearly marked $76.99 on the shelf. I had a valid 20% coupon for a wine purchase over 49.98 USD. Basic arithmetic: 20% off $76.99 is $61.59, plus the applicable sales tax (0.0875), for a total of approximately $68.33. The computer register instead tried to charge $82.30. When I calmly pointed out the obvious error and walked through the calculation, the middle-aged woman at the counter responded with a condescending, dismissive attitude. She insisted I was wrong and accused me of harassing the teenage employee simply for questioning the incorrect price on the computer. This is not a complicated transaction. A business that has operated since 1950 should be capable of applying a straightforward percentage discount correctly even on a computer program that was older than the teenage employee. Compounding the problem, the bottles on the shelf were coated in dust and appeared to have sat untouched for years. Selling one of them should have been an easy win for the store; instead, they chose to argue elementary math and reframe a customer's legitimate concern as harassment of staff. Terrible customer service, an unreliable pricing system/computer error, and an unprofessional response that resulted in being directly challenged on basic facts and common sense! I will NOT return, and I strongly recommend others take their business elsewhere. There is no excuse for this level of failure on both the arithmetic and basic manners. Basic math: 76.99 x .20 =15.398 (20% discount) Or 76.99 x .80 =61.592 (20% discount) Aka 61.592+15.398=76.99 (the displayed price) 76.99 x.0875 =6.737 (8.75% sales tax) 76.99 USD + 6.737 USD (sales tax) -15.398 USD (20% discount) = 68.329 USD. 68.33 USD =/= 82.30 USD

They provided a punch card. Every time I was there after that making purchases never did anyone ever ask if I had a punch card. If I remembered to let them know they then punched it. They give you one punch for every purchase over $10 -- that is, so whether you spend $10 or $100 you get one punch on the card. Doesn't seem too fair to me. I have also shopped at another store in the area that gives you points based on the $ amount you spend -- AND they ask each time if you are in their loyalty club! Guess I will be taking my business to them.

I grabbed 2 bottles of a hard to find rye and a couple backup bottles of some of my favorites. The store is easy to find as you traverse Elmwood Ave with its large neon sign.
