My wife and I did not plan on having a late lunch or dinner at the Cancun Inn yet, after a walk-through of the Sugar Loaf Arts and Crafts Village, we walked downhill on King's Hwy to the Cancun Inn due to simply being in need of nourishment. Other than two patrons at the bar, we were the only other customers. My initial reaction at the front door was that the building appeared somewhat run down. I quickly dismissed this feeling as I wanted to enjoy my meal. Ownership greeted us promptly and showed us to a table alongside a wall of full-height swing out windows in the main dining area. Service staff were pleasant and efficient. Shortly thereafter, a women and several young children were shown to a table on the opposite end of the dining room. The group did not stay long and seemed very anxious to make their stay as short as possible. It was now approx 3PM. My wife ordered hot tea as her beverage; for me, a bottle of Corona Lite. Both were brought to us quickly. Her entre', a large bowl of soup with salad. For me, the Pollo a la Mexicana with a mixed salad. This dish consisted of chicken breast, rice, and beans. Each seemed to be covered in a very watery "sauce". While not intending to criticize Mexican fare, I recognize that, in some respects, Mexican cooking and finishing style requires a certain degree of "liquid coverings". However, in this case, everything on my plate was essentially swimming in their own "sauce" which also crossed over into each serving. It should be mentioned here that our server did caution me over the "very hot" plate. Clearly, my dish had to be pulled from a very hot oven just prior to transporting it to our table. This resulted in my not being able to taste any of my food, due to it's extreme temperature. From a visual aspect, the liquidity of the dish was very distasteful. Clearly, leaving this dish in the oven resulted in everything essentially melting, creating a visual mess. I left about half of my dinner on the plate. I would have brought the remainder home for my dog yet I doubt she would have eaten it due to the (sloppy) presentation. Beyond our food, it must be pointed out that the full-height window pane to my left was cracked in several places. Long fizures stretched almost across the width of the pane. In my judgement, this condition had been this way for some time and should have been repaired by ownership. Ironically, ownership positioned us directly adjacent to the cracked window, clearly a code violation as well as a safety issue. Also, several potted plants were positioned on small window sills along the window line. Several plants were in the process of wilting and dying, another indication of ownership not taking notice nor caring about customer perception or safety. Frankly, I blame myself for not bypassing the Cancun Inn and driving the few miles into town to enjoy one of the many restaurants we passed while heading into Sugar Loaf Village. I will have no need to ever return to the Cancun Inn. read more

Came here for lunch, ordered tacos, was persuaded by the waitress to try some kind of garlic chicken dish instead, and ended up with weird Mexican-style chicken piccata. I don't know if the tacos suck, or maybe she just assumed I was some gringo who had never had anything but tacos and needed to branch out, but she was pretty adamant about me not getting them. I've spent a lot of time in Mexico, and I lived in Los Angeles for years, so I know my way around Mexican food, and the quality of the tacos are always a good benchmark for how the rest of the meal is going to be. But now I'm stuck reviewing my meal based on this weird chicken in garlic sauce. Maybe Cancun Inn is just trying to cater to the stereotypically boring Orange County palate, but everything was on the bland side. Bland rice, bland beans, bland chicken, bland salsa... None of the food had a real Mexican feel to it. Very little cumin. Very little chili. Very little cilantro. I got the waitress to bring me some habanero sauce and that helped a little, but there was still this overarching blandness hiding just at the edges. It's like they're trying not to scare anyone away, and that's always disappointing. I'd stop back in for a beer and some salsa sometime, but I doubt I'd go back for a full meal unless they can convince me they're willing to bring out some heat. read more

Let me start by saying I've passed this place hundreds of times and have repeatedly told myself that, "I have to go there one day." I finally went Friday night w/a party of four and was kicking myself for not trying it sooner. For starters, we had the requisite chips with salsa. The chips were blah but the salsa was perfect. There were many layers of flavor that ran through your mouth, the sweetness of the tomatoes, the fresh herbs and onions added more depth and hidden beneath it all was teh smoky flavor of a poblano. There was enough heat and smoke as an underlayer to this salsa that made me forget that I didn't care for the chips all that much. We also ordered guacamole which was light, fluffy, flavorful and just magnificent. It has the light, creamy texture similar to mousse and words simply cannot do this tasty treat justice. We also had an order of their Alas de Pollo and they were great. Nice bite to them, meaty wings, and a worthy starter dish. The main courses, as if we needed them, were large and delicious. Paella was perfect. Jambalaya was smothered in a delicious sauce that accented the tender chicken that much more. For me, I ordered the Mole. Why? Why not prove the merit of a Mexican restaurant by having them prepare a difficult dish to master. I've had Mole before, both good and bad and this was bar none the best. Everyone in my party hesitantly tried it and all unequivocally loved it. There was good heat and the subtle flavor of chocolate that covered some very tender cuts of chicken. To top it all off, we tried the Sopapilla and chocolate cake. We were not let down. A great night out with some truly amazing Mexican food (that tasted even better the next day.) The owner/host was gracious and this will become a regular eatery as I travel through the Orange County area. read more

Really pissed off that Yelp deleted my update without saving the content. My old review was for their prior location when I was just starting out on Yelp. It was badly outdated, and I used the recent news coverage as an excuse to update. When Yelp deletes a review, apparently there is no way to appeal it even though I've been on here for over 8 years now. Frankly I'm a bit disgusted, and I'm rewriting this now again from memory because Cancun Inn deserves it. Shame on Yelp for blatantly censoring me even though--as I'm about to illustrate--I have eaten here plenty of times. Long story short, the recent news coverage was sensationalist bullshit from 2 crazy people who took out their issues on this business. I've eaten at the people who own this place's restaurant since they owned a takeout joint in Newburgh (over 20 years). They're extremely nice, sincere people. Their staff reflects this and I've never had an issue with service. They did a decent job renovating this location, especially the deck. Food is typical Mexican with some surprises. Their house salad with 'tequila' dressing has better greens than many menu-listed salads at much pricier/fancier restaurants. Their sangria is absolutely addicting. I wish it was slightly stronger (as usual) but it's perfect for my Mom. Their guacamole is a good choice for an appetizer, but usually we just stick to the homemade chips and salsa. I usually get fajitas for my main as a mix of steak and chicken. Everything that comes with this--beans, rice, guacamole, sour cream, even some really good veggies if you ask--are great. The portion is easily big enough to save half for the next day. If you're feeling more adventurous or just don't want typical Mexican food, get any fish or chop specials that they have. You'll be pleasantly surprised with the results. For a cap on the meal, they offer a complimentary shot called the 'Mule Kick' (tequila, amaretto, peach schnapps). This is more than just a nice touch: it's an example of how Cancun goes above and beyond to try and provide a great experience. Reservations are recommended now, as they've used the recent news coverage to build up their business significantly (even for lunch). People up here stick by each other and know this family from over the years; this just gave them an opportunity to remind everyone how good they are. This has worked out well for Cancun Inn, and I wish them only the best. I hope to revisit again soon. read more

This place is fantastic. The food is excellent and the staff is great. The owner, Israel, is very hands-on and his sister and brothers work there. I feel like a member of the family when I go there for dinner because they are so polite. The place is good for kids too. The owner will stop to do magic tricks for the kids at a table. The salsa is probably some of the best I've had in a restaurant. The onions and cilantro bring out such good flavor in it. Their guacamole is great also because of the flavor of the fresh cilantro. Their traditional Mexican dishes are fantastic. The food is legit, and not just Mexican. They have great Cajun dishes like Jambalaya as well as traditional Spanish cuisine like Paella Valencia. If you like fish, find out if they have a fish special for the day. My girlfriend always gets it and has never been disappointed. They make a great sangria and fantastic margaritas. read more

Food food food food food... I love all food! Every weekend the bf and I yelp through different options to satisfy our cravings. Last weekend we opted for Mexican! I am not a native of upstate or northern jersey so I don't really know where to go except the Chinese or pizza spot by my bf's house. So with that said, yelp is my #1 BFF when I'm at his place (then bf comes 2nd ... Heh.. ;) ) After yelping through the many Mexican spots in the area (separately of course, speeds up the eatery decision process), we stumbled across the Cancun Inn. When we arrived we were pleasantly welcomed and seated at a cozy corner table next to a faux fireplace heater thing, s'cute. Our server, who was very nice.. Like really really nice, named the specials and took our drink order. We started with a pitcher of their sangria (amazing) and were given warm chips and salsa. My bf ordered their special which was a stir fry over rice and I ordered the paella. The food was good, but I should've ordered a more traditional Mexican dish. My mind kept comparing it to an authentic homemade paella I had in Florida made by my greatuncle's ladyfriend... Anyway I do hope to come back soon and try their other dishes. Had the lunch special, one chicken burrito and one chicken enchilada..I got two enchiladas instead. No problem, I ate it anyway but the portion was a bit small. Also, it I was swimming in a not so authentic tomato sauce. Authentic Mexican food and friendly staff are what you will find here. I was a fan of Cancun Inn when it was in New Hampton, and the only thing that has changed is the location. While I miss having it close to me, the new location is nice and bright with outside seating if the weather is nice. This restaurant is a very welcoming environment for families and there's a sizeable bar for the grown ups who just want to throw one back with some good food. For entrees, I recommend the carne asada con camarones al ajillo - very tasty beef and shrimp dish in a yummy garlic sauce. I also love the chicken chimichangas, which are full of flavor, lathered in just the right amount of cheese and sauce, and are perfect when enjoyed with a Negra Modelo! The rice and refried beans that come with most entrees are delicious as well and complete the whole package. For kids they have smaller portions of Mexican food or you can get them the typical chicken fingers, etc. if they aren't too adventurous. All in all, a good meal and good times - I just wish they were around the corner from my house so I could go more often! read more

I have only eaten here once so far, one snowy Saturday afternoon, but I deeply loved my meal and the hospitality. Atmosphere is warm,wine pour was very generous, and shots of complimentary liqueur for dessert. The chips and salsa were among the best I ever had. The nachos were good-I liked the serving style, like a pizza, and it wasn't overly huge. I had an appetizer version of the chef's special garlic ajillo shrimp, which came with two lovely soft tortillas, and OMG I sopped up every last bit. I can't wait to get that dish again. Hubs had a sample platter of 3 different things, taco, etc. and also enjoyed it a lot. I look forward to coming again, esp. when it is nice out and the patio is open. We drove 40 min to get here and I wouldn't hesitate to go back at any point. read more

Have dined here five or six times, mostly at lunch, and always been pleased with the offerings. I'm a big fan of the arroz con pollo (sp?), and the guacamole has always been heavenly (why can't mine at home turn out a fraction as good?). I like the ambiance of the place -- bright, cheery, sort of cozy -- and the warmth of the owner which matches it well. I prefer this much to the previous middletown location. Sugar Loaf is such an adorable town and now there is one more reason to visit. The Cancun Inn located in a little corner is just wonderful in more ways than one. As soon as you pull into the parking area you feel welcomed. You walk in and it is bright and cheerful and you just want to spend time there. The staff is very friendly and the drinks are wonderful. You need time to look at the menu because the choices are many, anything you want anyway you want it. There were four of us at the table and we each had a different dish, from beef, fish, vegetables, it was all excellent and dont miss dessert. We went here last night for the first time. We were invited there by the owners, Israel and Mario. We were treated like royalty the minute we got there. Everyone was so nice to us. My wife and mother in law enjoyed margaritas and sangria made by Julio. My kids ordered the grilled cheese and the jr sliced steak, and devoured it. My wife got the chicken/pork/steak fajitas and loved it. My mother in law got a shrimp dish that was made extra spicy for her. And I got the carne asada with shrimp. Israel recommended the brienne garlic sauce and let me tell you it was out of this world. I didn't leave a drop on my plate. The waitress holly and hostess (didnt catch her name) were attentive and played along with my children. And we noticed every person who walked in felt at home. I was taken in with all the 5 star reviews. After eating there it was typical of what I feel about most Mexican restaurants, just ok. I love Mexican food and really wanted it to be amazing but it was just average. Food had a sweet taste that threw me off. I had the churrasco and shrimp. Steak was tasty, they did not ask for temp. Of steak so a bit over done but not bad. Shrimp cooked well and really liked the garlic sauce. Rice and beans,weird sweet flavor.. And the flower thing.. I get it I guess, it looks nice but inedible things on my plate don't make sense to me. It's like trying to hard. Just serve great food and you don't have to dress it up.. Service was excellent. Israel, he was our server,was funny, charming and made us laugh. I'll probably give this place another try. read more
