I can't say enough amazing things about the Candy Kitchen! This is another spot I've been to several times over the years! Their homemade cinnamon candies are amazing! They last me quite a while! My husband loves the Ginger candies so I always pick them up for him! The staff is always so friendly and offers samples to try. There are old school and newer candies! My bf and I explored the nearby stores while waiting for a table at the White Rabbit. There were two ladies at the counter and they were nice and patient answering our questions while we looked around. One section is by weight and the truffles and s'mores bars are sold by piece. My bf devoured the s'mores bars before I could get a bite so that says it all. We got a random assortment of buttercreams and truffles. They all had a creamy center and a somewhat thin outer shell that had a snap, showing the chocolate was tempered well. I also recommend their version of a butterfinger. These chocolates have a more homemade feel to them vs a boutique chocolate shop. As most handmade chocolate shops are expected to be expensive, I was surprised everything we got was under $25. *note this is not the Candy Kitchens you see in Ocean City. Wow. ACKC, be glad that this shop isn't closer to DC. I think you've met your match. In terms of sheer assortment of confectionery creations, I don't believe I've ever seen are more vast array. Enormous glass cases filled with truffles of all flavors and colors, glass jars of some of my favorite candies (hello Swedish Fish!), shelves crammed with hard candies and jelly beans in rainbow colors, crazy tree stands blossoming with lollipops and candy canes in flavors I've never heard of, and gigantic (likely seasonal) chocolate eggs... that's covers perhaps less than a half of the sweet sweet offerings here. Although we'd just finished an enormous, delicious meal at Volt not half an hour earlier, I picked up three truffles to share: a mint one, a hazelnut one, and a chai one. Such delightfully decorated treats! They run roughly a dollar each, but I don't think I'd want to pop more than one, anyway - they're sizable! It was kind of like walking into a Willy Wonka store - I can only imagine what the place that actually creates these artful candies must be like. And if there's a chocolate river that supplies the input for the hard chocolate shells on the truffles, you better believe I'll be sticking my face in there like Augustus Gloop! read more

Stopped in a few treats and gifts on a Saturday afternoon. The shop was pretty much empty when arriving but got busier as we snooped around. The staff was happy to tell us that Easter products were half off or buy one get one. When two of ready to check out, we were asked to follow a salesperson to the other room to the register. Then the two salespeople got into a little tiff on who was ringing us up. Then they proceeded to disagree on how to apply the discount for Easter products. It was incredibly uncomfortable and awkward. The chocolate is great though. Expensive but that is to be expected at that sort of shop. I enjoyed a nut and fruit cream egg and we shared some splendidly decadent truffles as well. read more

Cute store and nice candy display. But expensive. The truffles we got were delicious (Hazelnut truffles so good!) but again as I understand it they aren't making the candy themselves? So it ends up being a pretty penny per truffle. For 8 truffles the cost was like $10.00. And we are talking small truffles, not that big to begin with. I mean if you absolutely must have candy, there's a fancy artisanal chocolate place down the street as well for about the same price point? read more

***The chocolates at Candy Kitchen are just okay*** Candy Kitchen is a big and friendly chocolates and candy shop in Downtown Frederick. It has a great look. It is on an old, small town looking street and the walls are lined with all kinds of sweets (I think it has the kind of look that would make many feel like they were a kid again). In terms of their products, Candy Kitchen features a lot of packaged candy including a few nationally available options like the Harry Potter candy, but they also have several chocolate pieces for custom boxes. I tried a few of their chocolates. The sea salt caramel was okay though there was too much sea salt--a big clump of salt on top of the chocolate covered caramel. The dark chocolate almond turtle was good and was similar to an almond bud at See's. The dark chocolate covered marshmallow had a great center, but it (like their dark chocolate almond turtle) just did not feature great quality chocolate. The chocolate at See's has a better flavor and it is also smoother and richer. Since Candy Kitchen's selection is very traditional, this chocolates shop cannot compete with contemporary chocolate boutiques that feature unique flavor combinations and also does not have many advantages over a good (though not great) traditional spot like See's. In terms of Candy Kitchen's prices, I think they are similar to See's though Candy Kitchen might be a little more expensive. Service here is friendly and quick. Candy Kitchen features very traditional chocolates so only a few items here feel special or unique. Nearby Zoe's features much more exquisite and unique flavors. For a traditional chocolates spot, Candy Kitchen is not bad and I would compare it to See's though I think See's is better. Free street parking is available. There is a lot of shopping and restaurants on this street so you might not be able to find an open space close to the store. read more

Candy Kitchen is a cool candy store in Downtown Frederick with a good selection of mass market treats and house/homemade sweets. My wife and I admired some of the specialty mass market candy available in the store, but the homemade chocolate offerings ultimately captured more of our attention and the attraction of our sweet teeth. Huge props to the shop for offering both gluten and sugar free options. This was not something my wife or I needed, but those options are great to have available to satisfy the whole party. We ended up zeroing in on the fudge ($19.95/lb) and walked away with a healthy slice after being offered samples by an employee. We didn't sample more than one flavor, but I had the sense the employee would have entertained our tasting a few options given the shop wasn't too busy (Friday night around 7:30). My biggest knock is against the lack of proportioning of fudge and the process for identifying how to buy it. We asked the employee for a particular weight (since we didn't feel confident in our ability to visually decide), and they asked us to identify how big a piece for them to cut. Ultimately, we ended up with about 1/4 lb more fudge than we bargained for and had intended to buy. We'll be back the next time we are in Frederick! read more

I'm always down for fine chocolate, and I'm down for spending a pretty penny on fine chocolate too. I went into this joint expecting a legit chocolatier, but turns out that most of this chocolate (or all) isn't even made in-house. Total bummer. At around a dollar per truffle and it's not even made on location but rather brought in, that's asking a little too much out of me. That's not to say that that chocolate isn't any good; I have tried quite a few pieces and it was fine enough. But I'm not going to pretend like this is some high end grade chocolate when it's not. If you're not a sweets snob like me, this should be fine. They don't shy about not making the chocolate themselves, but it's not like they advertise it either. So if you're looking for in-house chocolate, this isn't it. read more

He was so helpful and friendly and when I got home I was so pleased with how my purchase was packed with such care. Sooooo good!!! I got the chocolate covered Oreos and S'mores, and they were so fresh tasting and delicious. I love that they're also COVID safe and requires staff and guests to wear a mask too (I live with unvaccinated and immunocompromised family, and safety precautions at most places in DT Frederick have really relaxed). I can't imagine that the two women keeping the shop expected 7-8 customers in the middle of the afternoon, but they took care of the line and still managed to supply my friend and I with samples of their delicious pumpkin fudge. Two rooms, one for the fudge and their sugar-free options, the other for their huge selection of truffles, melts, brittles and chocolates. Unfortunately, they also house a selection of odd trinkets, ornaments, and gourmet condiments. I found this distracting and cluttered. read more

After dinner we needed a small sweet treat before heading home, so no better place for a little chocolate than the candy kitchen! The is a traditional candy shop and is in the perfect location. We were lucky to stumbled upon a few final boxes of chocolate covered strawberries that were only 1/3 of the price they had been that morning. While it's not the best best best chocolate i've ever had, these chocolates are fresh, flavorful and will bring us back into the shop! Customer service was fantastic as well! read more

I am not sure how the candy is because I wanted to buy a bag of assorted licorice that was marked $4.95. After trying to charge me 8 something, I pointed out the price. I like Candy Kitchen. The pumpkin fudge is light and flavorful. There is a pretty good selection of chocolates. It is a fun store but some of the knick nacks do seem distracting. Perhaps they have those so people can add to a candy gift. I couldn't quite figure that out. The service was very good especially for a Saturday night. Based on the pictures uploaded, they had far less stuff when I went in yesterday. Still, I bought some delicious chocolate. They charge by the pound, and for a little over $10, I got 2 giant chocolate covered s'mores (ahhh so good), 6 milk chocolate pecan turtles and 1 dark chocolate cashew turtle. They have a ton of different chocolates, fudge, and sugary candy. There were also bags of soup mix, ornaments, and various other trinkets. This place just smells so amazing. The Candy Kitchen is a well established Frederick favorite - for good reason! I have gone dozens of times over the years. Even when they are filled to the brim with people - especially around the holidays and Mother's Day - they try to get through the line quickly and efficiently. They always have something new to try out, but their more traditional flavors will stand the test of time. My favorite has always been the chocolate-covered marshmallow squares. They also have a variety of hard candies and candies that you can find on the national market. If you're looking for Harry Potter candy, try this place first. My suggestion is that you try to avoid the crowds during the holidays by going early, by the way! I have heard some people are able to order by phone, although I've never tried this. read more
