Saw this posted on their social media page: Fill-A-Bag special with up to 5 items and get 20% off the whole bag. It was for 1 day and all I was planning to get were the Hammond chocolates they carry. Their store stayed busy with patrons, and they also had an assistant helping throughout the store - I have seen her on a previous visit. She is very helpful. However, on this day I already knew what I wanted. As soon as I entered, I grabbed a bag. They provide the bags at the counter for this special. It is a small paper bag about 8.5 x 11 inches or so. Here is what I added to my bag initially: * A few of the Hammond's chocolates - most of my favorites were out, so I grabbed two Candy Cane Crunch described as Dark Chocolate with Hammond's Peppermint Frost. It is good, but not one of my favorites. * Orange Blossom Honey Hand and Body Lotion from the brand "The Naked Bee". It smells so good and smooth on the skin. * A bag of Jimmy's Crab Dip Potato Chips - it was my first time seeing this brand of chips here. Usually they carry the brand "My Dad's Chips" which are good too. These Crab Dip potato chips were so good that I wished there were more in the bag. To my surprise, when I go to check out, I am informed that 20 percent does not include food. Well, that sucks. So, I removed one of the food items from my bag and decided to treat one of my family members to an early holiday gift. Hopefully, they like what I got them. read more

Thursday 2/15/2024 This place was brought to my attention due to its ice cream but it was more than that. The family room is a local based gift shop that sells plenty of things like baked goods, ice cream, chocolate bars, books, juices, soaps, candles, art, and much much more. The workers make sure you are welcomed and are happy to help with anything you need. I ended up getting a cinnamon roll $6, brownie $6, a s'mores choclate bar $4.50, and a 'C is for cookie' (pre packed) ice cream pint $7.49. The cinnamon roll and brownie come from Ella's bake shop and they surprised me. The cinnamon roll gave me low expectations based on how it looked but I was highly impressed to say the least. I had the cinnamon roll at room temperature & warmed it up and it very was good, I would definitely get it again. The brownie also gave me low expectations based on looks but yet again I was impressed. The brownie was good: moist and had chocolate chips in it. The s'mores chocolate bar came from Hammonds and it was alright but overpriced in my opinion. When it comes to the ice cream they have fresh ice cream available and ice cream pre packed. I ended up sampling C is for cookie (cookies n cream + cookie dough), vanilla, and chocolate. C is for cookie ended up being my favorite of the 3 so I decided to get a prepacked pint of it which was a noticeable dip in taste & texture compared to the fresh ice cream I had before but I know better next time. The family room is a nice find that I would recommend and would return to for the delicious baked goods & FRESH ice cream. read more

This is a great shop out in the middle of nowhere with an assortment of gift items, ice cream, coffee, and dairy & snack packaged items. I was approached immediately upon entry but stated to her l would take it all in at my leisure. Asked about an item if it was boxed, they said no, and would wrap it up for me. It sat on the counter while I shopped. Complimented the owner on the shops' longevity. That is when I felt the icy feeling as if I was not welcomed. No eye contact, no thanks for the purchase, just here's your receipt and she turned away immediately. I recommend this shop, but I won't be returning and spending money there. read more

The scooped to order ice cream from tasted like it came straight from the dairy farm. The vanilla was creamy, rich and full of flavor. I would shop at this store just for the ice cream alone. This quaint little shop is owned by Kim & Corinne Glab, a mother and daughter that curated their shop with locally sourced products with a heavy emphasis on small and women owned businesses. There were so many cute gift ideas it was hard not to want to buy everything, especially from the food market that was stocked with so many treats. read more

It's such a shame that the experience of such a cute and tasteful shop almost always leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. The older owner is rarely ever pleasant. I'm not sure if you have to be white to be treated well, but I can tell how nice she is with her white customers and that she treats me and my family very differently. I keep having these experiences yet I go back thinking no I must be mistaken. After my experience over the weekend, I won't be stepping foot in there again. The lady was so rude to us! read more

I saw The Family Room's social media page and decided it might be a nice, low key place to visit during this period of limited social interactions. From our house in Silver Spring it was a fairly easy and pleasant drive and quite easy to find . There was plenty of parking out front and so we donned our masks and went up to the door. On the table in front was a bottle of hand sanitizer and just inside was another bottle of hand sanitizer, in case you missed the first, and disposable face masks for those who forgot theirs. The Family Room consists of a two rooms, both with shops, In the back of the store in the first room is ice cream and hot beverages for sale. On the side room there is a case with milk, local ice cream, and other assorted dairy products. The shops inventory included a number of local items which was nice. The ice cream was South Mountain and the coffee Quartermaine. There was even bbq sauce from Ijamsville, (our son and daughter-in-laws home town) among other local products. Because it was right after Christmas there were a number of ornaments and decorations, many on sale. I picked up some really cute mini notebooks, a candle snuffer, and a Maryland t-shirt. Rich got a cup of coffee and declared it delicious. It was a very pleasant store, the staff nice, and an easy drive. We will certainly go back and look forward to seeing what the Spring inventory brings. read more

I went to this place three times with my family to eat the local ice cream and drink the local coffee. The first time I went , I noticed that the service left something to be desired but I thought that maybe I was mistaken. Then I went again and they were a bit rude to my children because they were touching some of the items under the supervision of their parents. I again said that maybe they were worried that something will break. Then today I went again and they were very rude to me. I was spoken to badly on account of my touching a display item (it was a lighter that was in an open package for people to examine). They claimed that it was due to covid that no one was allowed to touch anything but there were no signs to that effect and no indications of it. When my family and I mentioned to them that they had horrible customer service , they did not seem to care. I will never go back to this place. read more

We LOVE this place! A friend introduced us to it so we could enjoy some ice cream and sit outside. The ice cream is delicious - made by South Mountain Creamery. After we had our ice cream we went back in and visited this little gem of a gift shop. What a thoughtful and well curated mix of gifts! I've been a museum store buyer for 30+ years and these people know what they're doing! They have unusual and lovely gifts for children, babies, men, women, yourself. Puzzles, food, greeting cards, toiletries, and many more wonderful things. They also have a refrigerator and freezer section and offer cheeses, milk, pastas, and ice cream. They also offer bunches of mixed flowers in jars or vases. We buy a bunch each time we visit. I'd also like to call out the staff - every time we've visited (perhaps 5 times so far) the people working there have been friendly and helpful and very efficient. It was a busy day today because the parking lot had a vendors fair going on. The music outside was extremely loud you could not hear anyone talking. I appreciate they let people use the restroom and were very cautious about who was in the store in terms of numbers. However when I went in and there was nobody in the store early on I felt like I was intruding on the space -I should've known better I have no idea why. The coffee is not worth even coming back - If they used quality coffee it be worth the price point but this was some of the worst coffee I've ever drank. The mocha was overpriced chocolate milk with a little bit of coffee it was a disappointment I think if you're going to have this place and want people to keep coming back you need to up your game. read more

Took a fun drive out to this shop I saw online. I long drive is always short when you know you're headed to a place that has cute things. That excitement turned south quickly as soon as I walked in the front door. The sales clerk behind the counter was intensely rude. No hello. No happy thumbs up. Nothing. In fact, she seemed upset we walked into the store. The store has a rule that you have to put on sanitizer. No problem at all. I'm all for it. My issue is how she spoke to me. It was so unkind. I said NOTHING because ugly doesn't need a twin. I don't write this in revenge. I actually write this with a sincere concern for this young woman. I'm not sure if it was a bad day, a rotten season or she got up on the wrong side of the bed. This unprovoked attack was uncalled for. I strongly believe in kindness and spreading the love of God to everyone no matter what. Praying for this clerk. Hope tomorrow she wakes up on the other side of the bed. read more

My family and I love to purchase the ice cream and the milk from here! The customer service is so nice and they even have curbside pickup. Spent a lovely morning here with a friend for coffee. The women behind the counter were gracious, and the baked goods were delicious! They've got a great selection of Maryland themed gifts, and I'll definitely be back this holiday season. The only thing that would make this better is if there were a way to heat up the baked goods, and if there were a changing station for the kiddos. But that won't stop me from returning. I recently went in here on a hot day with my elderly mother. We were immediately greeted by one of the owners not with hello but told we could not enter with our water bottles. We went outside and threw our water bottles away in order to enter. I would get this if they didn't sell food but they sell coffee, food and ice cream and the very premise of this shop is to eat, drink and shop. They have a sitting area to have drinks or food. Yet we were unable to enter with our plastic water bottles!!?? This was clearly being petty and not a true concern forbhaving food and drinks in the shop. Also it was water! I've been here several times before and it's a nice place so I was surprised that we were treated in this way. For a business that is based on gathering and community, being asked to leave with our water bottles (and not in a kind way) seems to go against the very things this business claims to be. read more
