It started all the way back in 1937 during the Great Depression as a shoe repair shop with a little candy pushcart outside, and it's still run by the same family today. The second you step inside, you are hit with this amazing wall of pure chocolate and sugar nostalgia. They have absolutely everything packed floor-to-ceiling, from retro candies you haven't seen since you were a kid to massive bulk bins and rare international imports. It is family owned and operated since year 1925. Schmidt's Confectionery has been on my Yelp bookmarks for what I felt like an eternity. Previously, I have attempted to patronized during the summer, but it is closed for the summer months partly due the heat and humidity which affects working with ingredients and not optimal temperatures. It is easily accessible via MTA NYC Transit elevated J train on Jamaica Avenue at Woodhaven Boulevard station in Woodhaven, Queens, NYC. However, I walked forty (40) minutes from my home to this business. Upon entering the atmosphere has a redolent chocolate aroma with history and tradition which is intoxicating. There are chocolate lollypops, chocolate covered fruit, nuts, truffles, caramels, but I was hoping for chocolate covered strawberries. I abhor caramel. I despise nuts (despite not allergic).
