Nostalgia brews a small local confectionary shop. Suddenly, I am now a five year old little girl as my eyes are delighted elated with wonderment to see all things chocolate and sweets displayed in the wooden glass case. Surely, my eyes are bigger than my stomach (including wallet). I have always been gravitated to old establishments where there is a long history, period atmosphere decor and the charm. It is family owned and operated since year 1925. Schmidt's Confectionery has been on my Yelp bookmarks for what I felt like an eternity. Previously, I have attempted to patronized during the summer, but it is closed for the summer months partly due the heat and humidity which affects working with ingredients and not optimal temperatures. It is easily accessible via MTA NYC Transit elevated J train on Jamaica Avenue at Woodhaven Boulevard station in Woodhaven, Queens, NYC. However, I walked forty (40) minutes from my home to this business. Upon entering the atmosphere has a redolent chocolate aroma with history and tradition which is intoxicating. There are chocolate lollypops, chocolate covered fruit, nuts, truffles, caramels, but I was hoping for chocolate covered strawberries. I abhor caramel. I despise nuts (despite not allergic). I like truffles. I like thin mints, chocolate covered graham crackers and have a predilection for plain solid milk chocolate. It is run by a woman who is the granddaughter of the founder albeit welcoming and helpful. I would surely return again for chocolate lollypops, chocolate money coins. I do hope Schmidt's have chocolate hearts. At first sight, I could not decide since everything was very enticing and alluring too good. I decided cherry cordials. She shown me a mid-size box of approximately twenty (20) pcs priced $30.00, which I asked if there is a smaller box as a option available followed by she asked if I want either dark, milk or white chocolate type. Oh! Someone who finally listens and heed the hope within my mind, WOW! Customer service is attentive and a personalized shopping experience. She gifted the box with mediocre curling ribbons which I have worked in a high-end retail specialty paper store and trained to use either double-sided satin or organza ribbons - never used curling ribbons. She did distributed a sales receipt. There is a scale if customers were to purchase by the pound. Business cards are available for grabs which is now part of my business card collection in a shoe box. Cherry cordials, box of 8 pcs, $10.00 I was completely sold for this small box. I actually taste the handmade and homemade decadence concoction of milk chocolate. It did tasted fresh and too good to give it away as a gift which I ended up consuming entirely! I delightfully enjoyed my cherry cordials with half a glass of white wine. Wooho! The stems from the cherries are visible. This candy store is certainly reminiscent of earlier times frozen in place. As time is fleeting, I hope Schmidt's Confectionery will continue to operate indefinitely. read more

This place will have feeling like a kid in a candy shop. The smell of chocolate when you first walk in is intoxicating and inviting. There's so many handmade chocolates and gift boxes to choose from. They even have cute stocking stuffer treats for Christmas! The girl who helped us out was kind and made us a 1/2 lb. assortment of popular milk and dark chocolate on the spot. $15 is a total steal for delicious handmade chocolate. I love old NYC establishments like this. I got a mix of dark chocolates, and the ones I've tried so far are great. The woman who helped me was so nice, and she threw in an extra one she thought I'd like after I paid. She also let me know that they are closed in the summer in part because the heat and humidity makes it hard for them to work with their ingredients. When you walk into Schmidt's it's like going back in time and not many places like this stand in these days. The way the displays, counters, flooring, & store front is it still has that old vintage look to it you have to love how they made things back then & not many places like this make homemade chocolates and candies like Schmidt's does. I have been coming here for many years. the owners are really nice people and very helpful when trying to choose from the many options of homemade chocolates they have. Schmidt's has some of the best milk and dark chocolates out there and nothing cant beat homemade. they have sugar free options, chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered caramels, chocolate covered coconut, chocolate covered almonds just to name a few. but hands down they have some of the best chocolates. my favorites are the fruit jelly candies, cherry and pineapple. raspberry jelly dark chocolates, chocolate covered pretzels and milk chocolate covered pecans. they are bit pricey and charge by the pound but that shouldn't matter its the experience of coming into this place. I wish they had some seating or made a little coffee/ hot chocolate bar or maybe they can come up with some homemade sundaes now that would be a awesome for this place to carry on for many years to come. I have been going to Schmidts since I was a little girl. This is a one of a kind shop. Margie Schmidt is the granddaughter from 3 generations of family. The chocolate is amazing, because it's made from love. As an adult I frequent there often. I buy all my chocolate gifts at schmidts. Five stars has to be awarded to this cute, storied, historical confectionary. The pleasure and delight was all mine as I glared at the little chocolate covered objects of my affections. I'm not ordinarily super nostalgic, but I morphed into a seven year old little boy, taking in all of the sweet smells and coco euphoria behind the turn of the century, greenish glass plates. Everything's homemade, handmade from scratch. No machines involved. No where can you find such a varied assortment of fruit, nut and other fillings. This place sure has a lot of charm. You can tell this place has been around for some time as soon as you walk in e.g. the smell, floor tiles and display cases. Came in after they were featured on Yelp not that long ago. We were greeted with a sample of chocolate covered graham crackers as soon as we walked in. Jeez Louise it was like heaven. A lot of choices, but we settled on dark chocolate covered oreos, almonds and some jelly candy. These were all really good I must say. How have I not reviewed my favorite chocolatier?!? Everything here is delightful and made from hand. Margie seems to know and remember everyone and what their favorite candy is. I'm partial to the fruit jellies especially raspberry and to anything with marshmallow or maple. I like to pick up boxes for gifts and parties, always getting something customized for home. Schmidt's has been in the neighborhood for 85 years. This place is older than old and Schmidt's is a candy store. I had a chance to speak with the owner extraordinaire and maker of these sweet treats. She is friendly, absolutely funny with a great sense of humor and easy to talk to and the shop has been in her family since her grandfather acquired it since the depression. This is a family own business and the chocolates are handmade. Nothing mass produced or machine produced, not here, everything is made from a time gone by where handmade items rule. No two pieces look alike and you can see and appreciate that this was truly made with heart and a lot of hard work. Don't come here looking for artisanal perfection, you won't find that here. Things here are down to earth and what your local, neighborhood candy shop would look like after 85 years. Times have made it tough for mom and pop stores to survive. Can Schmidt's endure? With the recession, and hard times that retailers face, business hasn't always been so good now. But I truly hope Schmidt's continues for many more generations as we are losing so many small businesses that bring uniqueness and character to a neighborhood. Come and visit and buy some goodies from Schmidt's. There is everything from malted chocolate balls in dark or milk chocolate, sugarless chocolates and a large selection of only milk or dark chocolates with various, nuts, fruits and creams, jellies and marshmallows for $14.95 a lb. There is peanut brittle, seasonal items such as turkey shaped chocolates in small to large sizes, non pareils, fall leaf shaped chocolates, and truffles. I spied chocolate coated pretzel rods in dark and milk chocolate at a very reasonable 2 for $3. Owner also gave some samples, I had some milk chocolate with peanuts, and some harvest chocolate coated with orange, yellow, brown and white round candy sprinkles. There are also candies in jars like gummy bears, jelly beans, licorice jelly beans, candy corn, pumpkin butter cream, jelly pumpkins, jelly fruit rings, and rock candy on a stick. I had some chocolate covered marshmallows and a jelly marshmallow bar and grab a medium turkey shaped chocolate to go. There is a plaque that hangs when you first come in at the front of one of the counters it reads "Chocolate is the answer, I don't care what the question is!" Right answer! Stop by this neighborhood confectionery. You can take the J train all the way to Woodhaven Blvd. If you are in Queens, take Q11, Q21 or Q53 that runs along Woodhaven Boulevard to Jamaica Avenue. read more

Why did I have to find this place? I walked by one time a couple of months back and thought 'oh how quaint.' This past Friday, I had reason to darken their doorway and my life will never be the same again. I tried the Milk Chocolate covered cherries. Spectacular Milk Chocolate covered marzipan. Stupendous Milk Chocolate coconut supremes. Exemplary I was eyeing up the cases the whole time because I appreciate some good chocolate and everything looked good. I had to stop at 3 varieties, otherwise it would have been ugly. All of their stuff is made fresh on premesis and variety galore! Not a pair of tongs and self service bin to be seen which is a nice thing. Unfortunately, I understand that I will be going there again. New York Hometown Classic! When I saw this mentioned on the show 9.99, I figured I need to make it over there before their summer break. It took a little while, but, boy, am I ever glad I did! The shop owner, busy as she was, was an incredibly lovely person. But this shop doesn't get 5 stars for the nice owner, or the achingly quaint/nostalgic vibe you get from the shop itself (though that alone could knock your socks off - Not fancy, but gorgeous). This is a 5 star shop because their chocolate is sooo freaking awesome!!!! I'm normally not a fan of dark chocolate, but the taste I had here was rich, deeply flavorful, yet without the bitterness I've come to associate with dark chocolate. The friend I went with also said she has never tasted better dark chocolate, and that's her favorite kind. She immediately bought several other chocolates: chocolate covered cookies, pretzels, and a few other things as well. It went pretty quickly! My favorite kind of chocolate is milk chocolate covered caramel. I've never been picky about it. It's a common enough candy/candy bar combination for sure, but Schmidt's is hands down the best milk chocolate covered caramel I have ever - EVER - had. The chocolate wasn't too sweet and the caramel was sublime.... So, this place is dangerously good. The only thing that could make the experience here sheer perfection is if the shop were able to fit a little seating area for hot chocolate or something like that. Great old time staple in this neighborhood. There was so much to choose from. My problem was that there was no real line. I stood behind another couple being helped and thought I was next. It wasn't the case , there are two counters here and 2 women were calling out customers names of what they wanted??? Not cool ... I came here after reading an article in newsday, I was intrigued to come here. Yes the chocolate was delicious, it was expensive but not as expensive in other homemade shops. Chocolate was 17 dollars a pound. I have paid 34 dollars a pound elsewhere. Customer service was a huge letdown. Maybe it was just that day ? I used to get my kids their Easter candy her bc of the variety of molds and the chocolate is delish. I went this year for my grandchildren. I got a bunny with a baby carriage, a cross, a baseball mitt and some typical bunnies. I knew that I would not be able to get my grandson a bunny bc he is allergic to tree nuts. The woman offered to make him one up special with virgin chocolate and a fresh mold. She even gave me the ingredients. How nice! read more

Grew up in Woodhaven and this classic store brings back memories. My sister moved to SC in 2016 and I sent her some of her favorites to help unpack. They barely lasted a day since they were so good. When you walk in the door and the smell first hits you, you know you are going to be in for a special treat. Handmade chocolates and candies from recipes that have been handed down for generations. The owner is always on site and is super friendly and willing to tell you the history of her store and show you all the old molds that they used to make candies since the 1920's. I recently discovered and placed my first order with Schmidt's, while creating a "made in Queens" themed holiday gift for a family member. Although my order was shipped promptly, it somehow got lost in the mail and never made it to me. Margie went above and beyond for me, offering to replace the lost package (I was only hoping for a tracking number, so I could attempt to track down the original at my post office) and even ship it to the address where I was staying over the holidays, so I still had my candy in time to include it in my gift! Amazing German chocolate store! Been here since 1927, and just as awesome as ever! Every chocolate treat you can imagine. A real New York treasure. It's mom and pop places like this that have made it this far and what really make New York what it is. The shell of the shop exists, with the beautiful old wood and glass display cases....but now they are filled with strange boards of chocolate hap-hazzardly put out to show. I love stumbling on places like this. As the previous reviewer says, Schmidt's has been in the neighborhood for decades, and the original owners and confectioners are keeping it in the family. Not only is the history amazing (the original Schmidt family, all 6 kids, grew up in the neighborhood, and some of them actually lived in the apartment above the store for periods of time) but the product is really fantastic! They do great special orders, as well - I've seen their fabulous wedding cake toppers! I can't believe there are only 2 reviews up here for such a great gem. read more

I've tried an array of chocolates from here- a good mixture of both dark and milk chocolates. Although I love my dark chocolate, I'd have to side with the milk chocolate options here. They have every kind of filling, my favorite being coconut. Me and my husband love Schmidt's Confectionery and Margie! We worked with her to create a 5-piece chocolate favor box for guests at our November 2015 wedding, and they were raving about how wonderful the chocolates were. Margie is great to work with and always kept me laughing. The fun part of our favors was that each box was a different assortment, and since we had a fall wedding, Margie made a leaf-shaped chocolate as one of the pieces for each box!
