Dare I say Canela Cafe has some of the best French toast I've had in MKE? Let me back up just a little and say that I'd 100% come back and order everything we got during this lovely Sunday morning brunch. We ordered the Herbivore Bowl, a side of sweet potato fries, and the star of the show, the Canela French Toast. The Herbivore Bowl was flavorful, with a great variety of veggies. I wish the potatoes were cooked just a taaad bit more, but everything tasted great. I usually find myself adding hot sauce to skillet bowls, but that wasn't needed for the Herbivore Bowl. The sweet potato fries were the perfect balance between soft and crispy. And now- *drum roll please* the French toast! I'm very picky when it comes to French toast and this met all of my expectations. It wasn't too soggy, didn't taste eggy at all, and the challah bread wasn't too thin or thick. First time trying this lovely spot and it was great ! It was very calm and relaxing, not loud or noise for a breakfast establishment. There were great portions and the Mamosa was most definitely kicking . I had the Tropical and baby father had classic. Even though he didn't finish his I did for him it it was delicious! With a great menus option which I also loved about this place, I tried the Steak bowl (well done) and the Wild Berry Crunch Pancakes . I did enjoy the steak bowl, pancakes looked so good but I noticed I made a mistake by ordering a nutty pancake . It had walnuts, and other peanuts in it that im personally not a fan of . I did enjoy it overall, just my mistake for not reading fully . For the others, he had a Big Boss Burrito, was super big and looked so good, he did mention that the pepper had all the seeds in it which wasn't good if he decided to eat it, but overall he would get it again. Lastly for our son (1yr) he got the Little League Breakfast and a side fruit for us both . Fruit was also a good portion and fresh ! He made a mess per usual and the waitress was very accommodating for it . I always apologize for him going crazy trying to serve himself and they took it well . Been wanting to try this place out and im glad I finally got to . It kinda reminds me of 2 other local brunch spots I've been to. Luckily it was a Sunday visiting here parking might be hard to find but there's a parking lot not too far away. Had a short wait as they don't take reservations for smaller groups and it was just 2 of us. I had the berries pancakes and they were delicious. Full of berries a light cream sauce and the pancakes were fluffy and light but absolutely huge there are 4 of these delicious pillows of heaven I truly wanted to eat every last bit but I couldn't. I eyed up the table next to us what they had and one person had a burrito it too was huge and looked so good so I know I'll visit again and try many other things. It was kinda busy but it wasn't a long wait for anything and had a nice waitress. They do have some outside seating and a small room in far back for a little more private or quiet dining. read more

My wife and I went here for brunch. It was good to see the former pancake place occupied again. I celebrated that by having pancakes , which were good, though not much to base a review on. My wife, on the other hand, had avocado toast with eggs on top and loved it--and also that it came with a large bowl of fruit on the side. It's a nice addition to the Downer scene. Plus points for having sugar-free syrup and minus points for staff not wearing masks. read more

We really enjoyed everything here! The food was fresh, delicious and full of flavor! I got the Mediterranean omelet that had a great amount of feta cheese. I've have been here a few times since they've opened. And all I see is the staff standing around, I left on a few occasions because of slow service and people standing around but today it's really irritating to see the owner doing everything while 5 staff members gather at the host stand doing absolutely nothing. This has been a great addition to Downer Ave. It's nice to have such variety of options across both sweet and savory breakfast plus some lunch options too. The interior is bright and clean and the staff has always been efficient and friendly. The coffee was a surprise and amazing, I think it was from Stone creek Coffee! The Chilaquiles is the best I ever had, you can definitely tell the salsa in freshly made. A must get if you're going to visit for the first time. The menu has lots to offer and has something for everyone. Looking forward to visiting again and trying the rest of the menu. read more

Bloody Mary was amazing. So flavorful. There were 6 of us and 3 of us had the Santa Fe Bowl which was delicious. The meat lovers bowl and breakfast tacos were also amazing. I was excited to try this place, so many of the reviews are good. I almost wonder if we were at the same restaurant. We we're seated promptly, and then things started to go down hill. The carafe of tap water we were given was lukewarm. The coffee, generic at best. My husband ordered the Mediterranean omelet with fruit and pancakes. I got the classic eggs Benedict with potatoes. Nothing was seasoned, at all not even salt or pepper. There was a good amount of feta in the omelet, the fruit was decent and the ham on the Benedict is good, the rest was not even worth eating. There was almost no hollandaise, one of the English muffin slices was soggy, the other rock hard. Overall it tasted watery, like the water they hold the poached eggs in had infiltrated everything. The omelet too had no flavor outside of the chunks of feta. The potatoes are not seasoned in any way. Literall, just fried cubed potatoes. The pancakes were the worst! The one on the top was crunchy, the one under it kind of mushy. The wait time for food was average, our server was fine. I'm not sure what happened between the reviews from September and today, but there is no way anyone would call the food we were served today excellent. read more

Standard brunch eatery. The kid's pancakes were light and fluffy and good. Sadly, my meal was sub-par. I ordered the chilaquiles. Every place I've been too has put their own twist on this standard Mexican breakfast. But, this doesn't mean that you should be served mush under over-easy eggs. They make them with tortilla chips straight from a bag - don't get me wrong, tortilla chips are delicious but these leave nothing to be desired. The surrounding chips of the dish ranged from crispy to not-so-crispy to holy-hell-why did these tortilla chips turn into complete mush under the eggs?! I ate the surrounding non-mushed chips and the two over-easy eggs but left the remainder of the mush on my plate. The salsa wasn't the greatest, but I can't bring myself to eat mushy tortillas slathered in salsa. I brought this to the attention of the waitress and she kindly offered some other food on the menu but at that point I was just done with eating. She told me she was going to tell the cooking staff, and that's where the customer service ended. I don't think she alerted the manager or anyone else. I wasn't expecting the meal to be comped but any other time I've sent back/given my review on a basically full plate, the manager has always been alerted and the issue discussed at the very least. Probably will not return because aside from that bad mushy meal, the prices are too high. I paid sixteen dollars for that mush. I'm hoping the chilaquiles is a rare example of bad food served there. read more

Really nice place with great decor and food. However it seems understaffed as our waitress forgot our water and Diet Coke. We had to wait to so long the hostess had to get it for us. When we finally got our food we were missing two orders of pancakes along with the syrup. read more

I've been to Canela cafe a few times. The first few times I had the South Benedict and it was amazing. I loved it. The last time time I was there I had the Berry French Toast and it was really good. My husband has had the Chocolate Hazelnut/Banana Crepes and the Shakshuka, he loved those dishes and had no complaints. My kids have had the kids breakfasts and kids pancakes.
