Canine Counselors really helped us with our two dogs, Boswell and Bodhi's,, issues. William, our trainer, was the best! He was professional, knowledgeable, patient, and extremely helpful. Boswell was very tough--aggressive and fearful and William showed us how to manage him more effectively. As he reminded us, repetition and showing that we are in charge are key. Our trainer Alexandra really did not care much about training properly. The first session was pretty much all the training that occurred. When by the fourth session I told her that my dog was worse than before in terms of being trained housetrained, her answer to me was, "oh well, that was then and this is now." She also missed two scheduled appointments. It has cost $500.00 for five sessions and all the training that took place was done in the first session (my dog was taught the"sit" command) That was it. Kiki was our trainer and she was AMAZING! We highly recommend Canine Counselors. It's nice to know that they will be available for our dogs' lifetime if we ever need their guidance and support. I have two Australian Shepherds that used to walk me instead of I walking them. They were not social and would bark at other dogs and strangers...in other words, spoiled. One is 6 years old and the other is 2 1/2 (never too old to train). Well, I cannot begin to tell you how amazing my dogs are today. After 8 classes, they have graduated and are great walkers, socialize, and no longer bark at other dogs nor strangers. Canine Counselors training has been the best investment we have made. We were blessed to have Marien as the trainer. She has an incredible gift with dogs...they just LOVED her from day one, it was love st first sight!! .The dogs now sit and stay while I walk away for over 100 feet until I give them the command to come to me, this used to be impossible!! They automatically sit when I stop, walk alongside of me, and are just a joy to walk, when it was a task before. For graduation day (today), we took them to Merrick Park where they intermingled with strangers and children who stopped to pet them. They walked through Nordstrom and restaurants and they were AWESOME, so well behaved!! I don't normally write reviews, but credit should be given where credit is due, so I could not pass this one up! First and foremost I have to give a big thank you to my trainer Danielle, she's the BEST! I've had dogs all my life but every session Danielle always taught me something new. She has trained 3 of my dogs and most recently my American Bulldog Lily and mix breed, Luke. Included in your training are group training lessons FOR LIFE which are held the first and third Saturday for the month. My dog Lily being a stray for a period of her life did have some dog aggression to the point we could not take her out in public but the group lessons have made such a difference, it's incredible! Luke was such a handful that I never thought he could be disciplined but with Danielle's guidance I've seen such a difference in his behavior and it allows us all to live together peacefully. I highly recommend the investment to any dog owner, the structure and knowledge they provide really does make a difference. I do see a few negative reviews on here and I must say...a lot of people don't take accountability in the behavior of their dogs. When I go to group training I see so many cases of people not listening to the trainers or following the commands. Canine Counselors give you the tools but it's up to you and your pet to put in the work, so please don't bash a great company if you're not putting in the effort as well. If I could give this place negative stars, I would. On their website, it states that they train using positive reinforcement, so I decided to give them a call. I verified their training methods over the phone and then scheduled an in-home consultation. During the consultation, everything sounded wonderful. So wonderful that my boyfriend signed up for 5 in-home sessions (the cost was $500 that had to be payed up front). During the first actual training session (after they had our money) everything changed. No longer was there talk of solely using positive reinforcement to train the dog. The trainer instructed us to purchase items that would cause our dog harm. This is not what we spoke about or signed up for. This is a company that takes the easy way out by using shocks, chokes, etc. that can severely harm your pet! What's worse is that they lie about it initially. Unfortunately, we were unable to get a refund. It's incredible how a company can be so deceitful and get away with it. UPDATE DUE TO COMPANY'S RESPONSE: Peter, I am absolutely 100% sure that I am not confusing Canine Counselors with another facility. When you receive such poor service, you don't forget or "confuse" a company. The charge was in fact $500 for 5 in-home sessions (I have the bank statements to prove this). Also, you stated that your company doesn't use anything that would cause a dog harm - which is an outright lie. Prior to our first training session (after payment was made) our trainer called and instructed us to purchase a prong collar for our dog. THIS. IS. NOT. POSITIVE. REINFORCEMENT. Still in shock over my brief experience with Canine Counselors. My initial consultation with Alex was wonderful and I was very excited to start training with my dog. After the initial consultation is where things went awry. They assigned me to a trainer, Raquel, who showed up 30 mins late for our first appointment. She spent the majority of the hour training session giving me a shopping list of items which was different than the list given to me during my initial consultation since I would have had everything on-hand that we needed prior to training. The next session came along and again, Raquel was 30 mins late for an hour session. When I spoke to her about the time factor, she told me that I needed to be more flexible. I schedule my life around the training sessions since this is very important to me but expect that the trainer has the courtesy to be somewhat on-time given some unforeseen circumstance . I was told by the trainer that and needed to find a new counselor and that my dog had issues (no kidding, that is why I hired a dog trainer). Once I realized that Canine Counselors was not going to be a good fit, I called the main office asking for a refund. After going around in circles for quite some time, I was told that in order for them to refund my money (I paid for all 8 sessions up front), that I would need to drive to their office near Tropical Park (quite a hike for me from downtown) between 8:30am-5pm with my credit card and agreement. I'm still a little confused since they were able to take my credit card information in my home but that in order to receive a refund I have to shlep all the way to Tropical Park. I should have done my due diligence to see that there is a complaint on Rip Off Report and several other reviews in-line with my complaints. read more

Our beagle had the tendency on jumping onto the edge of the counter and grab whatever food he could, but with Jennifer technique, he stopped jumping onto the counter. I hired this company because a lady in my building was friends with one of the guys and recommended them, I bought 10 sessions for $1050 to train my two-year-old French bulldog that is very aggressive with other dogs. After seeing absolutely zero improvements in seven sessions I had to ask them to stop coming as it was obviously a waste of everybody's time. The only thing my dog learned out of seven sessions was the command "sit" and not the reason why I hired this company. My dog is just as aggressive with other dogs as day one so I threw $1050 down the drain. Nobody cared to follow up or call or try to resolve anything, they proved they do not care about dogs or customer service they only care about taking advantage of hard working people for their own benefit. I would not recommend this company to anybody . I got scammed by Canine Counselors and I do not recommend this company to anybody. Best decision I ever made. Our trainer was Jennifer. I have a Yorkie who has a pretty strong personality with separation anxiety on top of it. Jennifer spent time with us and trained me as much she trained Roxy. :) It's amazing how much better she has gotten...Ok..how much better "I" have gotten too. In addition to the obedience training and behavioral issues, she learned and is learning some pretty cool tricks. We also went to the group class which was fun and helps Roxy get used to other dogs. When you pay almost $900 for a dog training program, you should at least expect to have some handouts or a basic training guide to refer to in case you forget something. Our trainer only provided the training verbally, I had to get my phone and start taking notes. Also, their training method is extremely harsh, the trainer hit our 3 month old puppy very hard, he said that how you correct a dog! Not sir, we won't correct our puppy that way. When we called to complain, the Director went on and on about how experienced the trainer is and didn't offer any apology nor acknowledge our dissatisfaction with the program.
