I absolutely love this place! All of the employees are awesome especially Casey, Liv, and Joe. I just started bringing my three dogs here, and the facility is super clean. I really appreciate being able to watch my dogs on my phone it gives me peace of mind. The staff is very caring, and my dogs clearly love them. There was a young lady with bright orange hair who was a bit rude, but I haven't seen her around lately probably for the best. Overall, I'm really happy with the exceptional care my dogs receive here. I've already recommended this place to a couple of friends. Keep up the great work, and thank you for everything! read more

Don't send your pets here. We boarded our dog here while we went on vacation for 10 days. Five days into our trip they called us and said he had an altercation with another dog which they believed was his fault and they wanted us to come get him, we had no way of doing this while we were 3000 miles away. They said he was not allowing them to get close to him, so they kept him separate from the other dogs the rest of the time we were gone. Upon pick they called my husband after he paid and left and said oh by the way we notice a red mark on his leg. When we looked at his leg it was swollen and had puss. We took him to the vet, and he needed surgery he had been bitten, and it had been left unattended for five days and had gotten infected. They would not help with vet bills. I will never recommend this place to anyone ever if they care about their dog. read more

So far I give this 4 stars. Not 5 because they don't feed the dogs - although if there was a special need I got the impression something could be worked out. Dogs are grouped mainly by size with a temperament pre evaluation so we've had no problems. You can check in on the action via webcam. Our dog is in the house a lot and the relatively unstructured dog interaction seems good for him. Good for him to socialize on a dog to dog level. The staff seems nice enough and yet keeps things pretty safe. read more

Not really a place you want to take your dog that's under the age of two. They do a test to see how well your dog socialize they put my one year-old dog in with older Dogs who didn't have the same type of energy that he had. It was a little odd. I was hoping since they did put him with an older dog that the older dogs would correct him so he can learn appropriate behavior, but instead, the old dogs just stay in a corner. Tried this one out because it was closer to home. The staff is really nice just really odd that they don't put dogs in weight class and age group. Wanted to come here because it was closer than the one I go to typically, but I'll just stick to the one I go to in San Clemente because my little guy is able to have a good time. read more

My dog Daisy is 13, she's an old girl and a very anxious one too. I took her here because I started a new job which required me to be out more. The staff was just amazing upon meeting them. Answered all my questions and was super nice. My dog was put with the small dogs because she is so old lol, which she enjoyed. I watched her for a while with the webcams they have, which is amazing they provide that. I cannot recommend this place enough, every single person there you can tell cares about the animals in their care. Amazing staff, clean building, plenty of parking, plenty of barking. It has been a wonderful experience having our Golden Retriever Retro join the Canine Retreat pack. Especially on days that rain and daylight savings combined when we are unable to take him to the Doggie Park. He loves other dogs so much being able to drop him off in early AM before work and pick him up after work is truly a God send. The staff are very professional and he is so happy there. Me too, always relieved to see him on the Webcam whenever I want while he is there. So we dicided to put on our Sailor Cap and write our favorable review. I unexpectedly was given a Siberian Husky pup in the summer of 2019. I had never had a dog before so I hired Brian Lee (Way of the Dog) to help train me (not my dog) and his first suggestion was to get her in doggie day care not just to get her plenty of exercise and stimulation (which a husky needs) but to socialize her around other dogs. I looked at a few options in the South Bay, but his suggestion was Canine Retreat since the dogs are in a covered environment all the time (no blazing sun, no rain) and they run around on a mat like surface. I could not be happier. My dog is there while I am working during the week so she isn't destroying my home or yard, and I'll even take her on weekend if I have to run errands (better to have her occupied and having fun). The staff there is great - I truly believe they love my dog and care about her well being (one of the staff actually alerted me to a sore in her mouth just from seeing her yawn). They let me know daily if she eats, if she's been active, if she's in a good mood, etc and I can always look in on their cameras. With the rash of outbreaks in kennels of kennel cough, canine influenza and now lepto, I am thankful they make sure all dogs are vaccinated before they are allowed in the building to make sure all the dogs are healthy. 1 sick dog means 50 sick dogs including my own. Vet visits now take 2-3 weeks to book and a dog getting sick now costs quite a bit for visits and meds. I've seen a few people get pissed when their dogs are not allowed in because they aren't vaxd...these people are terrible dog owners who not only don't care about their dog's well being, but believe they are above the rules (typical LA a-holes who think they are somehow better than everyone else), so kudos to CR for not bending. read more

PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG HERE My dads dog was attacked here, he wasn't even in they're care for 2 hours, when he got a call to please come pick him up because he was attacked. When he got there they said that they had no clue how it had happened because there was no video and no other dog was injured. So I other word they didn't know who attacked our dog because he didn't attack back..? Am not sure what was going on with they're cameras but it seems like they must not playing enough attention to the dogs not have a clue how it happened. I figured it was time for me to leave an accurate review of this place after reading both positive and negative reviews on here which I will give my two cents about later. We have been boarding our Rocket man here now off and on for about 4 years and we have NEVER had an issue. I was not paid to write this review and I am not affiliated with the staff or business in any way other than boarding my dog here when we go out of town. This is not the closest dog boarding facility to our home. It's actually quite a ways further for us to pick up and drop off. But we chose Canine Retreat because they do community boarding. All the dogs sleep in a big open space with someone on staff spending the night with them. This works for us since our Rocket man was a rescue and has severe anxiety and abandonment issues. I highly recommend this place. Now to my two cents about some of the other reviews on here and I thought I would chime in since there are things the business owner can't say but I can. First off I know that our fur babies are our children and family and we love them and treat them as such. Well at least I would hope that most people do. So I get that you would want your pet to have an event free time while they are here. With that said. They are still ANIMALS. They will play and some dogs play harder than others. Has Rocket come home from time to time with scratches and owies? ABSOLUTELY. Just like when your actual human child trips and falls at school and skins his knee and needs a band aid. Does the school deserve a negative review for that? COME ON. I don't have an epic meltdown and throw an online tantrum because of it. There are way too many entitled and privileged people who think that they have a " voice " because they leave online reviews. All the Karen's and Ken's need to calm the f**k down and be realistic about their expectations at a dog daycare and boarding facility. It's not Club Med and it's not Burke Williams. You want to overpay for sub par service because someone kisses your behind and strokes your ego? Message me. We've been taking our dog for day care at Canine Retreat for almost a year. They have day care and boarding, although we've only used their day care. What we really liked was that they separate dogs by size. Our dog was attacked by a large dog when she was 4 months old, so she can get a little nervous around big dogs. We also noticed their cleanliness. The place doesn't smell like dogs, lol. The workers are very friendly and knowledgeable as well. I feel like they really care about dogs, and whenever we drop her off, they refer to our dog by name and take her with enthusiasm. Our dog isn't super social, so we want to make sure she keeps up with her socialization skills. We purchase 10 day care packs at a time, and it comes out to about $30/day, which we feel is worth it. My mom found this place by chance and decided to check it out. They offer both daycare and dog boarding and they place your pets according to size, so there's no intimidation. The first time that my mom went out of town, she dropped my little brother off for boarding. I decided to stop in on my way home to check on his first day at boarding. Shay was very accommodating and led me to a room where I could look and see him playing in the environment. Although he couldn't see me, he kept coming over to where I was, so he could sense that I was there. However, he had no problem going to play and run around, even though he'd come back to where I was. He didn't whine or do anything that would make me think that he wanted to leave. Also, please note that at PetSmart, there's no way to see your dog once he's inside, unless he's in those front glass windows, which the big dogs usually were not. They had some lame ass video feed tv in the lobby, but you had to actually go there and stand in the lobby to see it. Here, they have live video feeds that you can view from anywhere. I often look at them on my phone. The only thing is that I wish we could see them at nighttime. Fast forward a few months and he is going to daycare a few times per week and boarding, maybe once a month. My little brother, Blue is a 100+ pound German Shepherd. He's very playful and overly excited to socialize. Because of this, PetSmart red carded him and wouldn't let him play with other dogs. So he'd stay in their "jail" all day, minus the individual play time that he got. Of course, we didn't like that, so we were very happy to see that he loves it here at Canine Retreat. His behavior is much better, too which led us to believe that someone on staff was antagonizing him at PetSmart. The last straw was when they said that he bit someone, yet we've had him since he was a puppy (3 years old now) and he's never bit any of us, nor bit anyone here at Canine Retreat. Things that make you go hmmmm.... Since leaving PetSmart, we've heard similar stories from others, so we definitely know we are not crazy. I'm glad that we found Canine Retreat. They are always nice, give reports on your pet, offer grooming services and have decent prices. They also sell dog food, leashes and collars, and have treats available on the counter. This place is wide open for your dog. They aren't in kennels and when they spend the night, they are in the main play area and can sleep anywhere they like. read more

I had high hopes for this place based on the Yelp reviews. I should've listen to the reviews regarding the FREQUENT CANINE INFLUENZA and kennel cough breakouts at this place. After my pups 2nd visit - she contracted canine influenza from this place. She is fully vaccinated for the H3N2. She vomited, coughing/hacking and lack of energy. She now has to quarantine for 21 days. After we told our vet about the temp closure at our daycare- his first words were " was this at Canine retreat? We haven't even mention the name of our pups daycare. He told us our pup is his 4th patient! He let us know since our pup is fully vaccinated, her symptoms will not be severe. However, his previous patients are really sick because they only had the first dose. My question is- Why does this establishment require your dogs vaccine record if they allow unvaccinated or half vaccinated dogs to enter??!! You are risking the health of your dog if you decide to bring your dog here. read more

They are so good, I would trust them to care for the grand-kids if they had that as an option;) The staff is so welcoming and professional. They know not just our dog, but the whole family. Driving from the Bay Area to hop on a cruise ship for a week, then continuing our vacation to Vegas, we were lucky to find Canine Retreat for our pup while we were at sea. The entire staff were so friendly and accommodating of our situation. It just took a few forms, a reference call to our daycare/boarding spot, and a quick temperament test the morning of, and Biscuit began his 7-night stay. We liked that the play areas were large, staffed 24-hours, and had webcams so we could check up on him. When we picked up Biscuit, he must've partied hearty because he was knocked out once we got to the car and had doggy hangover the next day! We were also given a report card of his behavior. I took my frenchie here for an eval after we ended with another daycare due to concerns that they are not able to keep my dog safe. I took him in twice. The first time he was kept for 4 hours in which I was told he did "ok" but was barking in other dog's faces. They asked that I bring him in again early in the morning in order to assess that he can be more "polite" to other dogs. At the second visit, my dog failed due to poor communication with other dogs. Yes I was a little disappointed since he has gotten accepted by another daycares with no issues at all but clearly this one is not a fit for us and I am not going to push anything if there will be potential for concerns down the line. The staff were very friendly and communicated their concerns well and I do appreciate them giving my boy a chance. The staff seemed friendly, I'm sure they all care for the dogs, and the place seemed relatively nice and fun for dogs. My dog just "failed" the evaluation. She failed because she jumped a small vinyl fence trying to get to a waiting area, she knew that I was in. The evaluation is completely counter intuitive and makes me question their thinking in how they do it. They do not let you go back with your dog to be introduced to a strange new place. So strange new people take anxious dog into strange new place, dog knows owner is behind a fence she can jump and tried to jump to me. Fail good bye we don't want your business. Obviously my dog was scared and just wanted me to accompany her in the transition. 100% if I walked my dog into the play area she would get comfortable and stay, she was completely set up to fail and not even given a chance. She's not aggressive at all, just wanted her dad to accompany her into the play yard. read more

I took my dog here and shortly after, I was called to pick him up because he had been attacked, I was in shook because my dog is never aggressive. When I asked what happened they just said they hadn't seen the attack but that ge was bitten. The reason I feel comfortable calling this an attack is because there was no fighting marks on my dog and no other dog was injured. I looked through to the camars and there was far too many big dogs in such a small space, it looked like they had over booked, so when I got there they said there they said there was nothing they could do and that I should take him to the vet.. as a dog parent I was outraged that they couldn't even tell me what had happened. They said the reason was because the cameras don't record and pretty much being under staffed. The next day I get a call that they MIGHT BE willing to pay a parcial amount of his vet bill. When the least they could've done was take care of his medical bill. Having been to a number of dog boarding places in the area and in other states, canine Retreat is up there with the best! Here's what makes them so great: 1) they are very customer service oriented and remember my dog after the first visit. 2) they are pretty anal about their rules, but this makes me feel safe. It almost makes me feel that they watch and take care of my dog better than I do, which is a lot! 3) there is always someone there with the dogs 24 hours a day and someone even sleeps with the dogs. 4) they consistently maintain proper standards of staff to dog ratios to ensure proper supervision of all the pets. 5) they are getting to be very popular so they're processed for the holidays are becoming more rigorous, which brings me back to number 2. 6) social evaluations are an absolute must at this place to ensure all dogs get along well with one another. This review is for CAT BOARDING only. I've left my cat, Luna here on three separate occasions. The last time was for over two weeks over last Christmas. I feel so lucky to have a place like this nearby. They have huge enclosures for your cat and they give your cat plenty of time outside of the suite to play on the cat trees and in boxes! This is so much better than the vet hospital where I used to board her. At the vet it was just a small cage and she's stuck next to her car litter the whole time. There's just no comparison. Here they have tons of room and are able to play. Also, the cats are in a completely separate area from the dogs so they can't hear them at all which made me feel really good too. My only recommendation would be if they could get webcams. read more

Sad to put this review up. The staff are all very kind and personable , but I've been lead to believe their "dog trainers / behavioralists " aren't legit . Long story short I had asked for my puppy to have a break during a 4 hour daycare session to make sure he doesn't run his paws ragged due to previous injury. This isn't my first rodeo of free range kennels and I'm aware dogs come back tired and sore. My puppy was happy and excited when I picked him up but when we got home I noticed he had a very noticeable limp and was" light"on his toes. When my pup was laying on the couch I saw it , the callouses on his back paws were slipping off. Meaning he literally ran so hard and for so long that he created blisters on his feet and popped them. 1) any trainer or behaviorist would see any herding or neurotic chasing and redirect the animal so why wasn't it done ? 2) I asked for him to be given a break . How long was said brake for and did he even get one ? 3) IF he did indeed get a break how did no one notice my dog walking funny back to the play yard ? My pup has seen the vet and he's going to be ok but we are now from daily walks to maybe once a week to help his feet heal. We still have yet to hear from the kennel about my concerns because no dog should be at risk of hurting themselves because they're excited to be in the yard read more

We took our wild chocolate lab puppy (8 months old) Milo into Canine Retreat this past weekend. My wife and I were sure things would go terrible due to Milo's abundent energy. Canine Retreat was awesome. They worked with Milo, introduced him to the other dogs during his evaluation, and then let him run with all the dogs.
