I had really high hopes for taking my dog Sasha here. Unfortunately the experience fell very short. Let's start off with the most alarming (and yes, Sasha passed evaluation and was invited back): I tuned in to watch the camera in Room 1 from time to time and was disturbed every single time I dropped in to watch. 1. Another dog attempted to mount/hump her with no intervention from the staff member multiple times. I saw Sasha defend herself and push the other dog away with her paw at least twice. A pair of doodles actually ran up to intervene on one of the several occasions. 2. The hygiene of the play area is disgustingly atrocious. The dogs are allowed to urinate anywhere and everywhere. But what's worse is that a mop that just gets rung out gets used over and over and over again. Not rinsed or dipped in the bucket, just rung out and reused, Gross. I WATCHED this and was shocked. As soon as I picked her up, she smelled like she was drenched in stale urine. I immediately had to bathe her. And she's not a small dog! It was absolutely disgusting. Needless to say, highly inconvenient to need to bathe her right afterwards. 3. It was a beautiful day and one of the few left as we head into colder weather. The dogs got absolutely no outside time. What was the actual point in telling new customers about these outdoor features that none of the dogs were able to access. 4. Sasha is not new to dog daycare and does very well socially. Dogs in general are fairly intelligent. Sasha sat off to the corner by herself (as did a few other dogs, so not bizarre), but I noticed the dog monitor never approach or greet Sasha. Only walking past slinging a pee soaked mop and obviously counting down the dread of her job. The body language and lack of engagement, enthusiasm, and energy was incredibly apparent. Read: ppl that do the job to get a check vs enjoy working with pets. 5. This place inside reminds me of those tv prison yards. Perhaps I'm guilty of being overly attentive, but when it's a new place, I'm careful and vigilant. Quite a few of those dogs looked so so depressed. As though they were serving a prison sentence. And yes, there were also quite a few that seemed very cheery w/ a playful demeanor. But this tells me that the dogs are not properly evaluated for either the rooms or needs private play. Which leads me wondering... is this place just a cash grab??? 6. I prefer authenticity over the performative. Both individuals that I met were nice (check in/out), but it felt super manufactured. It was actually odd. Like if I had a dial, I would have turned the forced overt loud kindness from a 10 to 6. It's 2025, just be genuine. 7. The report card is BS. I purposely made no mention of what I saw, bc I wanted to get their version of the evaluation. But after receiving... "[Sasha was a bit nervous, initially, but maintained confidence with a regal like manner...]" -- what is that?!?! Maybe instead just say, Sasha was a bit nervous, she had no issues interacting with the other dogs, but she preferred being alone the majority of the time, we noticed another dog pestering her, she was quiet, but perhaps she will warm up with more visits." Conclusion: this place served the bare minimum. If you're looking for a convenient place to dump your dog for the day, sure, fine. But if you want a clean/hygienic, well monitored place, where your dog can be somewhat simulated and allowed fresh air on a nice day, this place is absolutely not it! And more importantly Sasha didn't like it. Not that I blame her. I'll pay more money for either a higher quality place or at-home care. Such a shame. read more

This was the first time I've taken my 2 year old shih tzu to any type of daycare and we were both nervous. The staff immediately greeted us and made me comfortable. They explained what to expect during his first day evaluation and how I can view him throughout the day using the app. I of course checked the camera multiple times during the day and loved seeing how the staff interacts with the dogs. During pickup the staff was friendly and gave me a daily report card. While Remy was shy most of the day he wasn't scared. I've been bringing my dog here for a couple months and overall, the experience is decent. My dog is a little bit older so he only goes for a half day (4 hours or less) and this is what works with my untraditional work schedule. I will say overall, for a staff that is relatively younger, the place runs quite smoothly. My only issue is that if your dog only goes for a half day primarily in the morning (like leave before 11:30/12) and you would like a service that requires set up (photos or some of the enrichment activities), the staff will say they can accommodate and they really cannot. While upsetting, they do a great job of at least watching over my pet while he's there but anything additional, I would be hesitant if you are not sending your pet for a full day. read more

I prefer to leave positive reviews... My pup caught a cough at the Canine to Five Ferndale location and this cost us a lot. We had her in private play for 12 days. On the 6th day of her stay we were called and told that she had a cough and she needed to be picked up immediately. We were out of state at the time and are fairly new to Michigan. We don't know anyone well enough to ask this kind of favor from. Since we didn't have anyone to pick her up they required hert o go to a vet of their choosing for an emergency visit. We had to pay $200 for the urgent care veterinary bill and an additional $150 ($25 per day) for further isolation. They said they had waived a transport fee so this could have cost more. There was a lack of professionalism and sympathy from management. We have taken our dogs to this location a few times and have had great experiences in the past. They have a lot of friendly staff members and are so close to me. I hope they are able to take action to prevent their kennel cough going forward, especially given that it reached my pup even though she was in private boarding where she could not play with other dogs. I also don't think it is fair to charge extra for further isolation if a pup gets sick at their location under their care. Not returning soon given the health and financial risks but I hope to when new practices are implemented. read more

Don't ever take your dog here. I dropped my dog Henrik off to get groomed at their Midtown Detroit location recently. The lady at the front desk told me the groomer was ready for him and she took Henrik from me in the lobby. My apartment is a couple of minutes away. As soon as I got home (not even 5-minutes after I dropped him), I got a call saying Henrik had broken his tooth and was bleeding and that they cannot groom him anymore. I got back in my car to go get him. I walked in to find him soaking wet all over his body (they rinsed all the blood off him), and his mouth was gushing blood. They told me that Henrik bit the cage they had put him in because the groomer that took him (who they claimed was ready for him) put him in a cage to finish another dog's nails for "5-mins". I did not drop my dog to get locked/boarded, I dropped him to get groomed, and they told me they were ready for him. I would have waited that "5-mins" in the lobby with him. They told me Henrik must have gotten nervous and bit the cage they put him in, resulting in him deeply fracturing his top right canine tooth. The photo the employee had texted me of the cage (attached) shows me exactly why Henrik would have been scared. They put him in a small barred cage right next to 2 HUGE LOUD DRYING TUBES (to blow-dry the dogs). Clearly not the right cage to put the dogs in. I called my vet (VCA of Farmington Hills) and they told me to take Henrik to the emergency room immediately. I took him to BluePearl in Southfield and they told me there was nothing they could do and that he needed dental surgery, and that he was lucky he didn't break his jaw. The owner of Canine to Five gave me a call per my request and she ended up sending me over a waiver I signed 3 years ago releasing them from any liability. Real sweet of her. I told her about Henrik needing surgery and how they should cover the costs of this since he was in their care when it happened and they were negligent. I asked her how that was ethical as they had been negligent to my dog and she told me Henrik did it to himself.. "self-inflicted". Not to mention the employee I spoke to prior said the drying tubes block the cage Henrik was in from the cameras so I'll never really know what happened. The owner said she has had her business for 15 years and was "confident" in how they handle the dogs and their facilities.. clearly not. I found many other reviews on Google and Yelp of negligence and the owner not caring. I told her that I hope they can make this right. She then gave me her attorney's information. Even sweeter of her. Henrik was crying and kept poking and biting his tongue for days and was gushing blood. I finally took him in for surgery the following Tuesday of the incident and they had to put a tube down his throat and give him anesthesia, and then they had to remove his whole canine tooth due to the fracture being so deep. It was about $1000.  He is barely 4 years old and will live the rest of his life without his canine tooth. Avoid this place if you care about your dog. :) read more

My Dalmatian puppy, Kimi, has been going to Canine To Five for a little over 2 months now and loves it. She gets excited as we drive up. The staff at the Ferndale location is great and already know her by name, which makes it a breeze when dropping her off and picking her up. Their daycare runs from 6:30am to 8pm, which is great because it allows me to go to work, take care of some extra chores, and be able to pick her up. She loves the puppy program and is exhausted when she gets home. Their power bowls are a great treat for the pups and are reasonably priced (6 dollars for tuna or chicken, 5 for vegetarian). I came to Canine To Five based on the recommendation of many coworkers that also take their pups here. Be sure to ask if you're eligible for a discount based on your place of work! They occasionally do photo shoots (about $15) depending on the holiday that is around, and upload the pictures to their Facebook and give you a hard copy. read more

I am SO grateful for Canine to Five. I have 4 month old puppy and like any other millennial without human kids, my dog is my world and I am obsessed. So a daycare facility I trust is a MUST. I am so happy we chose this place. One special thing is that they offer a separate Puppy only program. I was so nervous about trying out a daycare because she is so young and I did not want to just leave her at a place with bigger/older dogs when she is still learning how to socialize. They separate the puppies from the older dogs and create smaller groups so the handlers can really focus and watch them. They also match temperaments. They also crate them throughout the day which was a huge plus for me as my baby needs to be told when to take a nap (and those puppy naps are crucial while growing!) The handlers also introduce new objects and use positive reinforcement so that they are more calm in real life situations. For example: bikes/wheelchairs/even a mock vet room! They give them lots of treats and positive reinforcement throughout the day so they learn to be comfortable in their environment. it has helped with her confidence and socialization sooo much. My FAVE part though is how much you can tell the staff cares. They treat my puppy like she is their favorite and I know they do the same with every other dog. They give her lots of snuggles and pets (she is needy that way) and they communicate so well with me so i know how she is doing and any progress made. They even follow her personal Instagram (yes I am one of those dog moms...) I 100% feel that my babe is being taken care of with trusted people. and for fellow helicopter pawrents....they do have webcams but they also have a FB group dedicated to pictures from the day. So every day she goes I can look at some cute pics they snapped of my little love having a blast. It may be a little more expensive than other places but you get what you pay for! This place has been such a blessing for our puppy golden retriever! We started here there as soon as she was eligible for their puppy preschool, and we have nothing but good things to say. The staff are 10/10, always so welcome and willing to answer questions. It's great to be able to watch them from a camera while you're at work. It's by no means a fancy place, but the dogs don't know the difference and the staff's constant positivity makes it a perfect place. I think the prices are fair for what you get, and even better if you buy packages or use one of their discounts (medical, senior, etc.). They're also always very transparent about what illnesses are going around, and I think that's a huge positive. They can't avoid kennel cough or GI bugs going around, but keeping pet parents informed makes me feel very comfortable. read more

if I could rate them a 0 stars I would. We had taken my dog here multiple times and everything seemed fine. we booked a boarding stay while we would be out of town for 5 days. while we were gone my dog had been attacked at the midtown detroit location in august. they downplayed the situations saying that he didn't get too hurt from the altercation. In reality seeing him in person brought me to tears. I wouldn't have even know he got attacked if it wasn't for me going to look at the cameras at the right time. I got one story when I called and asked what was going on and if he was okay and why the other dog had just attacked mine and then a completely other story when going to pick him up. they said they would let me know how he was doing in the morning since I was out of town and couldn't get him right away. I had NEVER been reached out to like I said I would and when I asked why no one had bothered to get back to me when going in to speak with them I had been told the manager was busy. if anything is more important than my injured dog I would love to know as to what it was. they didn't say sorry about it or even that they would mark down his boarding due to this horrendous incident. They said the other dog was excused from coming back but it doesn't make up for the lack of communication to me and the injuries and anxiety my dog now faces because of it. After this we waited a couple months to bring him to a group play/boarding. instead of going to the detroit location we decided we wanted to do ferndale canine to five since we moved and the last incident made things very hard to get over. we brought him in specifically told them to keep a watch on him especially since it's his first time back and they said he would. they said he did great and he would be fine for when we do have to board him for a couple of days. comes the time for vacation and we get a call saying he was playing with another dog and the dog had nicked him in the face giving him a scratch I told them it was completely understandable he has a white face and things happen and was very grateful for the update. next day comes and they say he seems to be having a lot of anxiety and they might take him to one on one just to calm him down and make sure he's not overwhelmed since it was day 5 since him being there. I was yet again very happy with the communication and had said that I was more than okay with one on one and if it persist and he seems uneasy keep him in there for the duration of the stay. next morning comes and I get a call saying he has been in an altercation ! I was caught off guard because last time I had spoken we had talked about him not being put in group play if he was still anxious and scared from there being so many animals and not being home. they said he was fine and that he wouldn't need to be picked up right away. I still changed my flight to get there as soon as possible. come to get him NO manager comes to help or explain what went on. they had overcharged over 200$ more than what it was suppose to cost and when I had asked for a manager the response was that he had to put it in his group chat for work for the manager to reach out when possible. i've never been to a facility where there is no manager on site. When bringing him home every time he was active and got excited he would cough. I called emergency vets and on monday my vet both said not kennel cough but probably something to do with his throat being injured. Makes sense due to his throat having gauges all down the side of his face and throat. Not only have I yet again have been let down but my dog has too. this time he has been 10x more anxious and it breaks my heart. I will NEVER again take him to this or any other canine to give location. read more

The owner cares so much about quality and safety and actually pays for regular, ongoing consulting with a certified behavior consultant to ensure that her staff are the most knowledgeable and skilled handlers in the industry. The staff there is just a joy and they are always so warm, positive, and friendly. I really trust that every dog there is in the best of hands, something I don't say about many places. My husband is out of town touring Europe (his band rocks) and I had a two day work conference out of town so had to sadly board my dogs. Guilt surfaced and I bought the premium package which includes an hour of personal attention from a staff member, daily brush out, tooth brushing, and Treat Dreams dairy free pooch pop. Every night before bed, they get a massage. I never believed for a minute that these daily dog massages actually happened (not because I didn't believe them but because REALLY???) but today Cú kept whining and walking back and forth in front of me. I thought maybe he hurt himself so I reached over to feel for cuts and bumps. The moment I touched him, his tail started wagging and he stopped whining. I decided to try a massage as a lark and did you know that he LITERALLY drooped his head and tilted his body to the parts that HE wanted me to concentrate on. After I thought I was done, he turned around and looked back chiding me because I failed to rub his rear. He went to sleep immediately after. SMH. A terrible precedent has been set. That is pure evidence of the amazing job Canine to Five does for my fur babies. They get treated better there than at home. I love you guys!!! read more

I truly credit Canine to Five for her socialization success and her eagerness to meet new people and puppies. Every staff member is knowledgeable, warm, and happy to be there. If anything comes up with my girl during the day that I should know about, I will either get a call or a report at the end of the day based on urgency. I trust them wholeheartedly with my dog and would recommend them to anyone! The only reason for the .5 star lost, is that prices are a bit high compared to other daycares in the area. However, I am happy to spend the money to know that we are receiving the quality care that my doggy deserves. read more

Updating my review. After talking with some of the staff about the earlier incident, I have taken my dog back for boarding - with group play during the day. i found that the incident that occurred previously on the first day of daycare seems to have been the exception not the norm. I wish it had been prevented with better hiring or supervising of new employees in the first place, but ultimately I appreciate the way it was handled. At least this place has cameras and takes the time to call to ask your opinion, etc. And the owner of the company herself did call me after that first incident and was very empathetic. Even though it was after my first review was posted, I never felt like she was calling hoping I'd remove a critical review. She really does seem to care about dogs and their owners, and her employees, too. On subsequent visits, I have found the other staff to be friendly and gentle with my dog. And even accommodating the fact that he's scare of thresholds (and new people) and needs coaxing or being picked up to get to and from the actual play room. Once he's there he's off and playing all day with the other dogs, but I appreciate the patience and gentle touch that I've observed with the rest of the staff. read more

I wish I could let my dog, Miley, give this review, so hopefully I am able to capture her feelings and thoughts accurately. Miley loves Canine to Five. When I say love, I don't even know if that justifies it. I think she has a sixth sense to know when she's signed up, because she follows me around the house all morning and loses her shit the second I touch her collar. Literally jumping around so much with excitement that she has knocked me backwards a few times. The second we pull up, she's having a fit in the car, crying and trying to escape to get inside quicker, almost jumping out of the car onto 9 Mile while I wait to turn left. From there, she's pawing at me while I hook up her leash, only to basically fall out of the car and make a sprint for the door. It's embarrassing, really. But let's be honest, she's a two year old dog with an insane amount of energy. I gladly spend the money to let her run it out and have some fun, even if everyone is laughing at us while we wait for her turn to be taken back to the thunderdome. If you have a pup with just as much energy, I recommend you bring them to Canine to Five so they can also have a good time while burning it off. Typically Miley sleeps from the second she gets home until mid-day the next day. However, I've found the perfect spot is to take her for daycare but board her overnight for an additional $15. She is pretty much dead to the world for at least 24 hours after picking her up. The staff is also really great, and I love the report cards she gets when she's boarded. It's also nice to watch them through the webcams and get photos of them each day (my favorite two included here). I highly recommend it for anyone struggling with under-exercised dogs this winter, but also just to socialize your dog in a much more controlled space than a dog park. read more

We were actually disappointed by Canine to Five. We've lived in 6 different states and have had our dog in several open play boarding. Canine to Five had great reviews and the dogs seemed to have fun during their "trial" daycare day. So we boarded them. It wasnt terrible and if we had no other options we'd go back. BUt it was by far the most expensive place we've ever boarded. the Cons: Not allowed to call and ask about dogs on the weekends. We noticed our dog wasn't playing at all and called concerned that he was misbehaving. We were told he had injured his leg playing. We understand this happens, but feel someone should have called us rather than us have to call them. We also had paid for the "brushing" service while the dogs were there but they came back matted, greasey, and smelling like urine. Again, we understand this is part of playing with dogs but if we paid for them to be brushed we'd expect better conditions of our dogs. Our male dog came back limping and our female dog came back hoarse and with a cough even though she was up to date on her vaccinations. FOr 400$, we'd expect better service. Pros: everyone seemed nice. They all seemed to enjoy the dogs. The place is clean and has lots of play areas. They have convenient pick up and drop off times. read more

Daycare really helped her come out of her shell and become more competitive playing with a lot of pups... she was a little shy prior.
