I rescued Atticus almost a year ago. Initially he had severe separation anxiety, but after being at The Barkshire a few times, he's much better about his visit there...although I still miss him! He stays at The Barkshire a couple of times a year for a week or so while I have my vacations. We absolutely LOVE the Barkshire! My Scamp is a super rambunctious sheltie, and he comes home EXHAUSTED. He's appropriately placed with some slightly larger dogs due to his energy level. When I drop him off in the morning, he is so excited that he bounds to the door and gets super impatient with me when I don't open it fast enough! We've used the Barkshire for almost 10 years for our pup. The workers there are so wonderful. They took such great care of our dog. As our dear Kayla aged, they made sure that she was in the appropriate rooms for her temperament. I cannot say enough good things about this place. My dog walked in there excited to go, that says a lot to me. She was well taken care of with her medicine and given at the correct times. EXTRA CHARGES and SCARED DOGS...I used them for the first time last week b/c they have an overnight attendant ("James"). I happened to be picking my dogs up when James arrived. He told me how much my dogs bark, as if it irritated him. My dogs ran and hid behind the couch when they saw him. When I told management, they said, "he is not a people person." And this is who takes care of our pups at night?????? They also tried to charge me for a half day of boarding for the same day I was also paying for overnight boarding. Seriously??? I have NEVER heard of a place that assesses two charges for BOTH day and overnight. If you are paying $57 per night to board overnight, why would you also have to pay for the day??? read more

Spacious place but lacking the individual touch I was hoping for my little doggie boy. The main thing is he seemed to gain weight at the facility and that has never happened in my care on the same food diet. Maybe he wasn't just walking as much but I was concerned the food was not be apportioned correctly. The space and quality of the facility are huge plusses though. read more

Great place to keep your dog for daycare or a long vacation. Feel 100% comfortable leaving our dog at the Barkshire. There is even webcam program that allows you to monitor your dog while you are away. Can't say enough about this place. They take specific instructions about feeding, medications, playtime, toys, etc. Each dog has their separate sleeping area (not caged) with toys from home and a plush bed. I do not know what Elizabeth M. is talking about. Every staff person we have encountered has been very helpful and kind in dealing with our puppy. They even know who is calling and reference our dog by name when making appointments. Soon the pool will be finished to allow for both recreational swimming and hydrotherapy. They have hired a dog aquatics instructor that will be running the pool program apparently. read more

You have to pay to watch on the cameras, which i find ridiculous. The small dogs room is left virtually unattended, and hearing from past employees sometimes they just have the front desk watch them to save money. I like that they have couches and tvs going and a bigger yard but i feel the care isn't very personalized. read more

One of the reasons I always recommended barkshire to others was bc I felt like they genuinely cared for my dogs. There were some awesome people there (Jeremy, Lauren, Taylor off the top of my head although I'm sure there were more) who really cared for my dogs and knew them. Lately, that's changed and I am not sure if I'll be recommending the barkshire anymore. The barkshire sadly has become one of those places who have decreased their quality. We dropped off our dogs for overnight stay and were disappointed with this most recent visit for the following reasons: 1. Our dogs gained 7 lbs, which means either they were over fed or not allowed adequate playtime. I even dropped off labeled food for them with a 1/2 cup scoop to avoid the problem of overfeeding. 2. We dropped our dogs off with toys, a mat, and clearly labeled food bags (they have separate diets). When we picked them up, they couldn't find the mat, dog food for one our dogs, and our scooper. 3. They didn't know who we were there to pick up when we came, which isn't usually a big deal except this is not what I've come to know and love about the barkshire!! This latest interaction felt so impersonal. 4. No pics were posted of our dogs. Again, not a big deal usually, but not what we've come to like about the barkshire. They are usually so consistent with posting photos and sharing that they truly do interact with our dogs. 5. Lastly, I called twice over a week to check on my pets and was given a "they're doing great" and "they're doing really great" each time with no further details. It seemed like they didn't even know who I was calling about. EDIT: I called and spoke with a manager to address my concerns and received the following responses. 1. They are going through new staff turnover. Somebody inexperienced may have answered the phones, which explains why it seemed like whoever answered didn't know who my dogs were. 2. The mat wasn't retrieved bc they are doing a new system of storing the dogs' belongings and there are some inconsistencies. This makes me wonder if my dogs even got to lay on the mat I provided. 3. They fed both of my dogs food that belongs to one of them. What?? What if my dog has allergies? I can't see why this happened when the bags provided were clearly labeled. This is also concerning bc one of my dogs has health issues, and her vet had us switch her food for that reason. 4. They used the scooper I provided to scoop food for other dogs. 5. They were busy bc they had so many dogs boarding. 6. If I'm not comfortable coming here, then I can take my business somewhere else. I can overlook new staffing and training issues, but to feed my dog food meant for another dog is gross negligence, and to be suggested to go somewhere else is just plain rude. It's sad to see this is how nearly 3 years of faithful patronage and promotion of this business can go so unappreciated. read more

For the first time in my life, I have a dog. I adopted Judy in June when she was only 11 weeks. She is a lab and pit mix - a fantastic dog with a lot of energy. I never envisioned myself as someone who would use a doggy daycare service. But sometimes, you just need to get some stuff done around the house and don't have the time to walk and/or play with the dog. The Barkshire had been recommended to me by a fellow shopper at Pet Supplies Plus, so I looked them up, was impressed with their website and gave them a call. The staff was super friendly and professional. When I dropped my dog off, I was given a full tour and allowed to watch Judy romp around with some other daycampers for the first few minutes. The gentleman who gave me the tour even pointed out what some of the play behavior meant (submission, dominance, etc.) The facility was really impressive. It is evident that the person who designed this place really loves dogs. The small dog room is hilarious - they have a couch in there and when you walk in, all the little dogs are sitting on the back of it barking at you. Judy was given a temperament assessment and her vet records were checked out. She passed with flying colors and I left her there for a half day (5hrs), which cost me $18. For me, it was worth every penny. When I picked her up, I was given a full report on her behavior and habits while she had been there. (They said she was very good!) When we got home, Judy was so tired that she barely even was able to eat her dinner and I was able to finish the rest of my projects in peace :) NOTE: I do not visit the Barkshire more than once every 3 months for a couple of reasons. 1.) I don't need a daily doggy daycare. 2.) The Barkshire location is not exactly convenient for me. 3.) The price. There are other facilities in the area that are less expensive. However, I truly believe that the Barkshire represents the best in quality - quality of the facility, the staff and the service. I will continue to use their services in the future. read more

A few weeks ago, I was looking around for a place to bring my dogs for boarding. I had remembered seeing The Barkshire in Hour Magazine's Best of 2012 magazine earlier this year so I decided to go over and get some more information. I was immediately offered a tour of the facility and after that I was sold. This place really is amazing. I can't believe I didn't know about it sooner. I never felt good about leaving town before because I didn't feel comfortable leaving my dogs anywhere. Now that I found The Barkshire I can have peace of mind. The facility is so open and clean and the outdoor space is very impressive. It is big with so much room for them to roam. The staff is great too. They are so knowledgeable and friendly, you can tell they are really passionate about their jobs and love animals. They are also very understanding if you have specific and detailed instructions for feeding, medications, etc. Yes, there are places with lower prices, but honestly these prices are not that bad and so worth it. The well-being and happiness of my dogs is not something I will compromise just so I can save a few dollars. This really is worth every penny. My dogs always come home happy and exhausted. I would recommend this place to anyone who is hesitant about trying out a daycare/boarding facility for their dogs. They will give you a tour and will do whatever it takes to make sure you and your pups feel comfortable. read more

This is a tough one for me, as I really wanted to like Barkshire. However, their website is seriously misrepresentative of what they actually have to offer. The "pool" is only open for a few days each month, and there is a major upcharge if you want your dog to have access ($20 per 1/2 hour). The "luxurious couches and TVs" are only available for the tiny dogs. The video on their website states that the dogs can "freely go from inside to outside" which also is not true. Watching on the webcam, my dog was let out three times during her entire stay. Finally, their Policy page states that they require "proof" that the dogs are on flea/tick preventative (which I originally thought to be a comfort). However, they never asked me for this information. I will admit that there are acceptable reasons for all of these things (pool is expensive, big dogs ruin couches, the outdoor area is shared, etc) - but why not just portray your facility as it is, rather than fabricate what you have to offer? Cages are still cages... even if the walls are white. The establishment certainly has the capability of being excellent, but it simply isn't there yet. The staff seems disorganized and unenthusiastic. Barkshire- I would suggest a) updating your website with complete information, and b) Put the leashes on the dogs before returning them to the owner. I didn't appreciate having to chase my dogs around the waiting room trying to leash them up. Although the facilities at Camp Bow Wow are not as large, the staff is friendlier and they are more personable with your dog. I will be sticking with them for now. read more

There are number of better places to take your pups - when choosing, INTERVIEW the owners before selecting a regular place for your pups. Our dog is 8 months old; still a puppy and who loves to socialize with other dogs. My fiance and I had him boarded at this facility over Memorial Day weekend. Although the initial daycare trial went well, we had several substantial concerns with his treatment during the time he was boarded. On Sunday morning, I accessed the webcam to check on how our dog was doing. I could not find him on any of the webcams during Group Play. Concerned, I called the front desk and asked how he was doing. The receptionist replied with, "Oh he's doing great!" and noted that he was in group play with medium dogs. This was not true. I informed the receptionist that I was viewing the medium dogs' webcam and did not see my dog. The receptionist then checked for my dog and I was informed that he was being rambunctious and was apparently being kept in his kennel while all of the other dogs were out playing. My dog was then allowed to join the other dogs. When I went to pick up my dog I was given his bed back in a plastic trash bag because he tore the bed to shreds. When asked what happened, no one knew. This was reportedly due to the night shift being under-staffed over the weekend. The night shift was then contacted and I was informed that my dog "apparently" tore up his bed overnight. I immediately had concerns that he may have ingested some pieces of his bed that could result in digestion issues. Overall, my opinion of this facility is poor. I feel that if I had not called or checked up on my dog, then he would have been kept in a kennel all weekend. I further feel that he was not observed, which in addition to being excessively kept in a kennel by himself, resulted in him destroying his bed and possibly eating things that he should not be eating. If your dog has seperation anxiety, don't bring it here. They don't have people there 24hours/day. they charged me $150 extra in labor to have ppl there overnight to keep my dog from causing trouble like eating through doors. They flat out rejected my dog 4 days into my vacation. I had to call my vet from thousands of miles away. You have to bring your own food too and pay them 40 bucks a day. Totally worth it! They did a great job taking care of my dog. He was so tired when he left from playing. It is nice because they charge by 24 hour period rather than by calendar day. I brought my dog in the late afternoon Thursday and got him before my 24 hour period came up on Sunday so I only got charged for three days, where as most places would have charged me for four days. They have a great facility and all of the staff are very passionate about taking good care of the dogs. When I picked my dog up I got a full breakdown of how he was with the other dogs. One of the staff members said my dog was a little skiddsh at first so he brought him into the staff area and gave him some one-on-one attention until he was more comfortable. Overall totally worth the little bit extra compared to other places. I will definitely be bringing him back! read more

The Barkshire is the ONLY place where I leave my dog when I am gone! The owner Rita has created a true paradise for dogs. The place looks amazing and I can watch my dog play on the webcams while I am gone. Last time I left him there, he came home so tired and happy - he was a changed dog! He absolutely loves it there! Personally I think they are worlds apart from other daycare facilities in the area! The price is the same though. And soon there will be a pool for our dogs! I cannot say enough about this place, the cleanliness, the professionalism, the attentiveness to my pet (and to me!) and the initiative every person who works there, takes for each client (dog and owner) is 110%. Switched from another doggy day care that I thought was good until I discovered the Barkshire, it made me realize all of the advantages my doggy (and myself!) were missing. I have taken advantage of their daycare, boarding as well as the grooming and I honestly cannot think of one single negative thought. 3 other dogs of my friends that I have referred, switched over to the Barkshire from some really nice places and they were in awe of the greatness. We bring our English Lab Moose to Barkshire for overnight visits. Unlike other facilities they have people at the facility available to the dogs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I went for a tour of the Barkshire and after Tristan met my dog and we agreed to meet again with my other dogs (i own three) I received a rude call from Rob telling me my dog would not be welcome at the Barkshire. I had warned Tristan that my first and youngest dog I brought to the tour has a very loud bark, and is scared of his own shadow and everyone else's too! To which he answered that "he had seen it all". Tristan was ill prepared to handle my dog. After three maybe four more phone calls about how I could bring all my dogs in together (my youngest finds comfort and confidence with his sibs) and on a first name basis, apparently Tristan typed into the computer that my dog was a "fear biter" hmm, barker maybe but my dog has never bitten anyone. While it is a very spacious setting, it smelled of urine in the front and there were too few handlers for the amount of dogs in my humble opinion, 1 for every 15. I was very disappointed in this kennel. My family and I were relieved to hear about the webcam feature to watch our dog, but soon found out that the webcams are only on for about an hour a day. What happens when they are turned off? When I picked my dog up, he was covered head to toe in feces, and they didn't give him a bath. When asking the lady about my dogs time there, she seemed to know nothing about his stay there. I felt like my dog was traumatized after coming here. I would never trust them to watch my dog again. We were looking for a place for our dog while we were out of town. We found the Barkshire and have been very pleased. We like the fact that the small dogs are in a different area than the large dogs. The staff seems to truly enjoy what they do...looking after your dog. I absolutley LOVE this place! I have never taken my dogs to a daycare or boarding facility before and I spent ALOT of time researching local facilities to find the one that my dogs would feel the most comfortable in. I did not want to have my dog in a cage because they have never been treated in that fashion. The Barkshire was the best I found online by far with comparable pricing to most other facilities with similar descriptions. When the pooches and myself made a visit to this facility to check it out I was immediatley impressed the staff and the place. They require a temperment test to make sure the dogs are friendly with the others which in return makes me feel better about them being around a large group of unfamiliar animals. The facility was very clean and large. LOTS of room for the dogs to run around inside and out! They do not use cages but small cubicle like rooms for the dogs to have there personal space that still allow the dogs to see out of. Very cool. Most of the time they spend there they are in the play area- very little of their time is spent in their room. They also have an indoor pool that should be up and running soon. Perfect for my two water loving dogs! I have an anxious dog and a somewhat fearful dog and both were handled great by the staff who all seem to love the animals and truley enjoy what they are doing!
