During our vacation in Monterey, we decided to walk over to Cannery Row from our hotel to check out the shops, restaurants and the local sights. We happened in a mall where this store was a part of. It was pretty eclectic with merchandise from sundries, liquor, clothing, jewelry, collectibles, and souvenirs. The sales woman on staff was very nice and offered assistance if we needed it without pressuring us to buy. It was fun just browsing the store, but prices on many items were over priced. But then again, I noticed that everything in this tourist town was notably high wherever we went! Other than that, you can find a little bit of everything available throughout the store. read more

Really neat vacation spot we stayed right on the water from a 3rd floor view and it was great. We were right on cannery row so people watching and walking distance for allot of locations, so no need to move your car. People watching is great and area appears very clean. It's a great little location, if your in the area come visit you won't be disappointed. We are vacationing from out of state and this is our 3rd visit and we will be back for sure. Beautiful area where you can watch the sea otters swim just off the beach. read more

Absolute garbage! it took three of us to execute a simple exchange of a child's sweatshirt. The recipient tried to exchange it without a receipt but with the store tags on it. She wanted the same item, just a different size. They were SO rude. So I went in a couple days later with the item and receipt (encountered the same rude staff) and they said I had to wait for their manager to be there. Are you kidding me? For an exchange? So the following day I had to send my friend or I was gonna scream. They were still rude but eventually exchanged it. We are talking about a $20 sweatshirt here......not a gucci purse. read more

I love, love, love this place! It's always a shop I hit when in the area. Yes, it's SUPER pricey and I never buy anything when I'm there. But, it's so much fun to look around in and the employees I've run across the times I've been here have been friendly and fun to talk to. My mom doesn't like this shop because "it has nasty stuff". Damn - that's why I come here! Tons of gag gifts, crazy array of eclectic alcohol, big selection of fun tshirts that aren't the run of the mill baby blue shirt with the cute otter saying Monterey above it. As I said it's really expensive and I always leave wishing it was cheaper. Four stars for the cool employees and rad stock of stuff. I would have given them five if it weren't for the prices. All in all - I'll be back for sure. It's a fun store for adults. read more

A very unhappy employee was working there when we made a visit on our stay at Cannery Road. We were excited to see the tequila variety. Short, had a beard, look Hispanic or Italian. We had to ask him if he was having a bad day because customer service was terrible. read more

The cashier guy was a miserable soul. He condescendingly said 'thank you' when I was showing my Son a toy that made a sound passively aggressively asking me to stop. Grumpy old man needs to retire or at least not work around people. Crappy attitude employees and overpriced souvenirs that smell like dust clearly explain why the store was so empty. read more

I called the Cannery Row General Store to ask a simple question. The guy who answered the phone was very rude. First, he picked up the phone and proceeded to finish off 15 seconds worth of a conversation with a co-worker before even greeting me. He then proceeded to be insulting and rude when i asked for what i was interested in. There are plenty of these stores in Monterey - skip this one and go somewhere else! read more

Avoid this place - TOTAL RIP-OFF We made the mistake of walking into this store on 2/15/11 - while on a get-away to Monterey. This sales clerk was a complete jerk - my husband purchased some Visine Eye Drops and I purchased some earrings. The guy rings up the order and says, that will be $32.46?? The earrings were $17.00 - understandable, (although they have already turned my ear lobes green) - but the real shocker was that the Visine was $12.99 for a tiny bottle - $12.99? are you kidding? We said, forget it, we'll walk up to the CVS for that kind of price - The guy says that all sales are final - my husband points out that the sale isn't final until we hand him the cash - then he tells us that we are getting a deal, because he sells cigarettes for $15.00 a pack??? There was a bottle of tequila priced at 2 THOUSAND dollars - it looked, small and cheap - the clerk tells us it's because the bottle has platinum in the design - is this a joke? Anyway,I thought that the clerk had run our credit card for the purchase, and if I had known he had not run the card, we would have just walked out - but he so quickly snatched the cash from my husbands hand, we basically had no recourse. We certainly didn't want to deal with law enforcement - hopefully, Karma will get these people. We mentioned our unfortunate experience to other retailers and wait staff at the places we visited - all of them telling us that the owner of the General store owns all the candy stores, is a total jerk, and rips all the tourists AND THE LOCALS off whenever he gets a chance - hence, we didn't purchase our normal mother-load of taffy in Monterey - nor any other souveniers at all - in fact, this experience had us close our wallets for the duration of our 3-day stay - we were leary of all the shops after that. The Better Business Bureau must have file on this place - AVOID at all costs. read more

Avoid at all costs. I went to Monterey last week with my family. We were going to shop in here but as my 2 daughters entered the door the lady(I use this term loosely) scream at my daughters to get their asses out no kids allowed. My daughters are 19 and 20. I walked in behind and told the clerk they were of age and she demanded ID. When I questioned her why on the ID your sign says not under 18 without a parent and I am their parent she told me her store her rules and if I did not like it I could leave as well, which I did. I asked for the owners name and phone number but was refused and told he had better things to do than deal with tourist complaints. I was shocked at her demeanor. I told this to other stores in the area and was told that the owner was the most hated man on Cannery Row and that he is just out for the dollar and does not care what people think. I don't understand how he is still in business with the bad time people are having why would you want to spend your money in a place as this. I have told all my business associates who travel to Monterey to boycott all of his stores including the candy stores he owns. I hope this boycott will hit him very hard in the pocketbook. The clerk I understand rides a broom to and from work if you catch my drift. read more
