What a great experience and so much so we went twice in four days. We stopped knowing we had no reservations and it could be an issue. They stated they were booked so we sat at the bar and before we could order they had moved people around to get us a seat. The service was outstanding from the beginning. We ordered a couple drinks before dinner and decided on a few sides and the ribs. Wasn't sure what to expect of the ribs but honestly I could have eaten several slabs. They were perfectly tender and had a unique sauce that was a bit sweet. They were heavily caramelized which placed them in the top five best ribs I have ever had. Everything was so great we decided to have a late night slab the following night after our early dinner. This is one of the staples people recommend when you come to Amsterdam. They have serval locations and are open later. I can describe the environment as a bar that serves good food. We originally were going to have lunch on our first day, but our Uber driver talked us into another place. However after the café one night we popped in to fix our hunger. When we walked in it was Saturday night around 11pm so they had Kayne blaring. After reviewing the menu we ordered: Le Burger du Moment - it was a burger w/ pork belly Flame Grilled Lamb T-bones The burger was ok. Nothing as exciting as we had heard. Especially since I just had an amazing burger elsewhere this burger had a lot to compare to. Figured that pork belly would edge it out for the win, but not this round. My gf barely ate the lamb as it was a lot of fat. I will say that the bonus is that they do have their own beer that is a blonde, called Cannibale Royale of course! I see why people like this place. We walked in on a whim, no reservations. The place was jam packed! The friendly hostess was very accommodating in getting us seated fairly quickly. We ordered drinks which came out quick & really spot on perfectly made. The menu is in correlation with the namesake, lots of meat offerings. I ordered the classic burger & the bf ordered ribs. My burger was a tad salty but really good but his ribs! Oooooh man! Those were some serious finger licking ribs! We really enjoyed ourselves here & I highly recommend checking this place out. This is a perfect place to grab a drink or a quick bite with some friends! My friend and I came here after a drunken night on the town-- needless to say, we wanted drunk food. We were planning on the fries, but the waiter recommended the nachos, so we gave him the go ahead. We got chicken nachos which were amazing! It comes with sides of crème fraîche, guacamole, and mild salsa, all of which were delicious. The nachos themselves came on a very hot bowl topped with jalapeños, black olives, raw red onions, loads of cheese and interestingly (to us Americans) mayonnaise! I have to say, the combination was excellent! What makes this place extremely unique is that it's horror movie themed. When we sat at the table, we noticed a bunch of creepy old dolls hanging from the ceiling to our left. In addition, they have weird weapons and creepy old family portraits lining the walls. Stumbled across this restaurant online, decided to give it a try on our first night in Amsterdam. The place was full, we were seated pretty quickly, friendly staff, and decent amount of choices to accompany the ambiance. My meal was cooked perfectly, very tender and juicy. I chose the sweet vanilla corn as my side- a win for the night- delicious. And the wine paring suggested as very tasty, typically stick to one glass of wine (not much of a drinker), I had two glasses. Although October 4th was like a spring day, sunny and light, full of promises of good things to come, going inside this place the atmosphere would make you believe you turned the wrong corner. A grim feeling takes over you, the pictures on the walls are warning you, the masks are telling you to hide, the dried up flowers are telling you life was once beautiful. Was this a good decision? Hell. Yeah. I decided to go for Le Magnifique (because I am) and my friend for the classic burger (just because ;)) both for a reasonable price (around €7,50 each) and a lovely Weiserstephan (or something alike). In total we paid €23. Not bad eh? Would I go back? Defo: 1. Although not too big - like me - Le Magnifique was definitely a tasty burger 2. The young staff was quite friendly 3. This was the first dinner of my friend's Amsterdam bachelorette. My co-planner easily made reservations for a group of 10 in this hot spot right near the Red Light District. Our server was easily one of the best servers I've encountered for such a big group! Our entrees took a little while to come out - but we were happily indulging in bitterballens (omg, BOMB!) and their cheap beers. The entree portions were HUGE and delish! Hidden in an alley near the Spui you'd probably miss the restaurant if it weren't for the "A" board that you have to walk around in the middle of the alley. The entrance is non descript. However, the place was packed and more people were coming. Those without a reservation after 20:30 had average a 30-60 minute wait for dinner. The restaurant was dimly lit but more than adequate lighting giving it a nice cozy feel. The music was upbeat. Three of us had burgers while one of us had a salad and an order of nachos. Two of us had the Cannibale Royale burger which was a nice thick meat patty with bacon and pulled pork on top and sauerkraut on the bottom making for a very interesting taste. Fries were a side order served with a small container of mayonnaise. The nachos were the best looking and tasting nachos I'd seen since being in Amsterdam. It was a pleasant surprise. The tables and chairs were the tall wooden bar kind that were not real comfortable but adequate.They have a nice selection of beers, some on tap and more in bottles. They also serve cocktails. I tried vegetarian food, paleo diet, soy-milk, even shrimp (they're the cockroaches of the sea), so I am not one to reject a new experience. When I was invited to this place, I prepared as best I could - saw the original Hannibal trilogy and a few vampire movies (closest thing to a royal cannibal I guess). The staff was really helpful even though we had no reservation. Once we got our seat, one of the best parts of the restaurant came to light -- the menu! They give really funny names to their dishes, so I ended up having the "Le Modest" while my gf had "Le Magnifique". I guess we were both thinking about each other when we ordered, although she's too modest to admit it. Small note for the menu item "L'Absurde" -- a 1000g steak, that few lived to tell the tale. There is even a hall of fame for them, right by the entrance, with a board of who ate this beast and how many times they did it! I could already see we were in for a treat when the cutlery was placed at our sides. A strong, purposeful fork paired with what I'm gonna call a "murder" knife. Didn't know how much meat was coming round the corner but whatever it was coming our way, we were definitely ready to hack & slash our way through it. Then, the meat! Wow, I don't know who that person was, but it was delicious (probably a former cross fitter). The meat portion is huge and I liked the fact that it was served on a small meat carving board, to really let you feel like a butcher. Meat lovers will rejoice of course, while vegans might reconsider some annoying life choices they made. As for the space, it's this cool dark environment, not very noisy, where you can have a normal conversation or seat as a group without disturbing others too much. There are these cannibal references all over the walls which make this place really fun and unique. Dare to enter if you're around the area ;) Bonus point: open till late (1 or 2 am I think). Anticipation was high after the good stories I heard about it and the review of Flippie :) Flippie was a bit disappointed with the staff, and therefore gave it 3 stars. Not sure if they read her review, but during our evening, we never had a shortage of drinks. Instead of having everybody decide something separately, we all had the same menu: starting with some chicken wings and nacho chips, followed by spare ribs and small burgers. Did you want us to gravel at your feet podium man? We travel from Los Angeles twice a year, entertaining artists and agents; always take them here but we won't if you are going to have the customer service skills of a barn animal. Also the quality has declined since we started coming here several years ago. Beef tartare is good but the burgers were too undercooked last time (it was just too much raw meat going on) and the ribs were dried out and took forever because they accidentally dropped them... and then brought another table their order which included ribs. Great place for steak (even after hours). Only thing is they cannot really manage the tempature of the steak... Asked for rare, was cold- asked for medium, was rare, but asked for wel done and was beautiful medium (yes been there more than once). Good beer from tap, try their own brew or go for IJ beer. Side dishes are very good, have to order separately. I like the big knifes you get with your steak, even though steaks are very tender. Another 5-10 minutes to order. 15 mins for appetizers to surface. Another 20 mins for the main dishes. Hot wings were probably one of the worst I've had, but edible when hungry. Nachos were a bit weird; tons of onions on top and but not enough tomatoes, guacamole and cheese. But again, edible when hungry. Ribeye steak and signature burger were not bad. House draft beer and Negroni were pretty good. Service was slow but the staff was friendly, so whatever. I forgot to book a reservation, and when we arrived it was fully booked on a Monday night. The host said we could wait for a table at the bar (there are 6 seats there), so we gave it a chance. Fortunately, we waited only about 20 minutes. Service/Atmosphere: The bartender and staff were friendly and seem to enjoy being there. Great place for good meat & beers! Located in former (and famous) old student bar behind Spui. Atmosphere is a combination of raw Western (wood and metal) and a creepy haunted house(dolls and knives in cubbard). It reminded me of the Sleep No More experience in NYC. Went here for lunch to grab a quick bite and were able to be seated right away around 2pm. This place is definitely popular, so if you can snag a reservation, thats the best option. For our meal, we both ordered the rib burger and split an order of the fries. The rib burger was really good and was a decent size for the price. The fries were pretty standard and I did not like the fact that they let the mayo sit out downstairs for a while before serving it. Nevertheless, the service was friendly and we enjoyed our meal.
