Came for a business lunch. I've wanted to try this place forever. View was spectacular. We started with wine and beef tartare. I don't eat beef but was told it was just ok. Moved on to the fantastic Caesar salad. The dressing was perfect, romaine crazy fresh, lots of freshly grated cheese. Also had the mushroom soup. Was excellent and creamy but the Caesar salad totally won over the soup. Then I had the chicken. Was tender but the skin could have been a bit crispier. Loved the crunchie breadcrumbs on top. We tried the Winterlicious menu here last week. The place does not cover parking before 4 pm so it was $32. For guests coming in the evening parking is $12 and covered by the venue. The server we had was amazing, attentive, and quite busy that day. He answered all of our questions, and had some good suggestions. The seating is always comfortable and the view is second to none in the city. The food was cooked and prepared well, the skill and technique was very noticeable with every bite. The steak was cooked to perfection, the potatoes that came with this main were also impressive with their strong but robust flavour of thyme, and it wasn't greasy, just fried perfection. The app, I had the stracciatella cheese with rye and the grapes were blanched I think and the skins were peeled off, this was a very delicate dish, not very flavourful, but the textures is really where you'll see the layers come out. The soup wasn't as thick as the typical way to make it but was packed with umami. Wanted more after each bite! The sauce however was a bit overly salty Duck leg (5/5): basically fall apart, skin was nice and crisp and meat was super juicy. Easily the best dining experience I've had in Toronto in my recent memory. Every part of it was elevated and proved to me why Canoe is so talked about in the Toronto culinary scene. We opted for the Summerlicious menu for a more affordable first visit. It is not as affordable as it once was, at $75 for a three course dinner, but in my opinion more than worth the price. For starters, we tried the salmon tartare and onion soup. Both were good. The entrees were amazing - both the Alberta Beef and King Cole Duck Leg blew me away. The portions are generous and they do not skimp for the Summerlicious menu. I highly recommend both dishes and I'm not sure which one I'd choose if I came back. Finally, the service and atmosphere were top notch as you'd expect from one of Toronto's best restaurants. Canoe is good old fashioned fancy restaurant. And you know what? There is nothing wrong with that! This is a place you go when you want to impress someone - or treat yourself because of a great life accomplishment - or you just want to witness the beautiful city of Toronto from the 54th floor of the TD Bank building. The views from the massive wrap-around windows are stunning. The interior decoration of the dining room is subdued, elegant and neutral. It really drips "fancy." The food too is top notch. One stand out for me was the beet salad. I know that many of you - me included - have had many beet salads throughout your lifetime. But this beet salad was a perfect balance between the luxurious sweetness of the beets against some bitter greens and tart creamy dressing. It was gorgeous! My main course, the duo of pork, was the best pork loin I have ever had. Just cooked enough but not too much. Tender, juicy and so flavorful. The fat back was not necessary in my opinion but I understand why it was on the plate. Likewise, the dessert of Black Forest Gateau was delicious and slightly inventive. For ambiance, I cut back on my rave a bit. We were seated at a table that was smack dab in the middle of the main corridor in and out of the restaurant. We had so many servers, staff and customers rushing past our table - or saying their goodbyes - honestly, I got a little tired of having their rear ends staring at me while I was eating. Our server, Nicolas, was ok. He was not very present, not very attentive and not very engaged. At these prices, I expect the server to be more involved with me. The view was glorious. Everything else, not so much. This is such a highly rated (and expensive) restaurant that I couldn't help but be disappointed by the somewhat mediocre food. We came here for a business lunch and were seated in a private room overlooking the CN Tower and Lake Ontario: a wonderful first impression and we were delighted to be able to dine with such spectacular scenery in front of us. However, it started going downhill from there. We ordered from a set menu and were not impressed by the appearance of the appetizers. The "vine-ripened tomato" literally comprised a few pieces of cherry tomatoes with some random ingredients thrown on that contributed absolutely zero to the flavour - I could've been eating just raw tomatoes, and not even very fresh ones at that. The "romaine" was a plain Caesar salad, nothing special at all. The steak tartare received some positive feedback, but the portion was tiny. The main courses offered a bit more appeal - my halibut was tender and cooked to perfection, but the tartar sauce was seasoned on the bland side. Dessert was fairly standard, but quite possibly I was disenchanted and bored of the whole thing by then. Service was prompt and professional as expected at these upscale places, but our waiter did give an unexpected little speech about the reason behind the rising prices at restaurants (all their suppliers increasing prices, very low margins, etc.). I was actually inclined to agree until I saw my tomato appetizer being served. I'm sad as I remember this place used to do much better. "Decent food overshadowed by rude and bare minimum service quality" I came here for valentine's day tasting menu. This is $250 each. I actually had a bad experience with this place two years ago being rude to my parents and not respecting our time and space (and I spent another $600+ back then for tasting), but decided to give one more shot and now am certain I am never coming back. 1. Food is alright. vday tasting and regular tasting are fairly similar and in overall we had great time with food. Often salty and three desserts were maybe too much but it's ok They were experimental, interesting, tasted good. Things like Tarragon icecream, beef fillet, etc, I think the kitchen did a great job. Just heads up, you come here for experience and to show your guest that you care about him/her/them. The food is 'interesting' and nice, but it's not like this is amazing and you come here for food kind of greatness given it will be significant spending. So set expectation not too high if you're here for food. 2. Service - main reason I'm not coming back. As it's 8 course meal, people who served changed consistently (which is fine), but they put bare minimum effort to explain what the dish exactly is. Like...the servers just put bare minimum effort to explain what it is and just say 'this is A.' often just putting down the plate and leaves without any words. I think I had better service and commitment to explaining these basic food at a local bar. This depends on a server though I think because I overheard other server and she was doing a great job and we guessed what we're eating based on overhearing the other table. The worst part is we saw our main server maybe a few short times during entire 2.5hr, not initiating conversations, just putting bare minimum effort putting things down. Then I was shoved a bill without me asking at the end during important conversations. That's ok because it does happen for restos with packed schedule, but when I tipped, probably the person didn't like the amount, as soon as I paid, he ripped the bill paper, slapped/slammed it on the table, said 'we need this table' then just turns around, walks away without any words, feeling negativity from him. Not sure if he was expecting 30% but regardless this is unacceptable at anywhere especially upscale restaurant. Imagine this is treatment you get for paying $600. I've heard such amazing things about canoe but apparently I ordered wrong because they are only famous for two things - mushroom soup and their fish. I ordered the aubergine salad, which had a lovely dressing but a very slimy aubergine and greens too large to fit into your mouth. A few of us tried that salad and none of us could finish it. For the main I had the flat iron, which had a velvety delicious sauce but meat that a bit on the chewy side. Service was excellent, and so were the views. Came by for lunch the other day and it was a mediocre experience. Canoe is featured in the Michelin guide. Parking is available in paid garages in the area and was readily available. Made a reservation via OpenTable and our table was ready upon arrival. Canoe is located on the 54th floor of the TD Tower and offers breathtaking views of downtown Toronto, including the CN Tower. The clientele appears to be a mix of tourists and perhaps family offices taking out clients to a meal... Started off with the bread and it was like a wet sourdough. I think San Francisco has the best sourdough. Moved on to the wild mushroom soup and it was world class. Flavors were on point and there were a variety of textures and types of mushrooms in the soup. The waiter said that this was a famous dish. Had the foie gras mousse as an appetizer and it was excellent. The center of the bread was lightly toasted and topped with a generous amount of foie gras mousse. The side of pickled vegetables were excellent. The aged sirloin steak was lackluster. Despite the staff suggesting the steak with a higher level of marbling, I found the steak to be quite lean. Requested the steak medium rare and the steak came out medium... The side of frites didn't quite match the calibre of the venue... The onion rings were hand breaded although the breading was much too thick... The cornish game hen was also lackluster. The hen didn't seem too fresh and was rather surprised by the choice of lettuce and onions to complement this dish... Service by the staff was decent although not incredibly polished. Had a wonderful dinner celebrating a birthday at Canoe. The view is great, especially if you have a window seat. However note that the window seats are first come first serve, and they do not accommodate special requests for the window seat ahead of time, so if you really want one you should reserve an earlier time slot. We also got the steak tartare that came with foie gras, which was not too heavy and the perfect amount. Our table shared the raw bar which was delicious and very high quality. Loved how there was so much variety. For the mains, we shared the short rib and the duck. The sizes of the entrees were not that big so I'm glad we also got appetizers. The service was great throughout the meal and there was one server who was very mindful about the shine from the sun as the sun was setting, and he would move the curtain accordingly based on where the sun was, which was very nice. Attending a wedding reception, this is the first time we were at this venue and the staff did a good job of moving us through the bar area before seating us at our tables .The appetizers were very good, inuding chicken on a skewer, radicchio in a tempura like batter, and an antipasto shared plate. The mains included a flat iron tartare and Albertan fillet (menu attached) which was very good. Came with my company and we had enough people to reserve a private room and get a special three-course tasting menu. Most of the food was good, though our server was a bit rude (not very responsive) when it came to confirming and accommodating a gluten allergy... which was unfortunate as I've heard this typically is not the case! Bread was set on the table, with some special gluten-free cornbread for my friend. She said that the cornbread she's had here before was far superior; this time, the bread tasted stale as if it had been frozen and reheated. We then started off with appetizers. I got the heirloom tomato, a salad which came with snow crab. It was so refreshing, light and flavourful. I shared with a friend, and tried some of her gluten-free bison tartare (just missing the bread to accompany). It was gamey and tender, but I preferred the heirloom tomato. For my main, I ordered the surf + turf. The beef was cooked perfectly (medium rare) and the kohlrabi on the side was very interesting (resembled stacked potatoes). The lobster was meaty and plump, but flavour-wise, disappointed me. Perhaps it was the overwhelming taste of lemon, but at times it felt like I was eating dish detergent... not my favourite. That said, this main was better than the truffled risoni, which though fragrant (mmmm truffle) was extremely heavy given the oil and fried mushrooms. I finished with the chocolate delice, which was deeelish. The cake was extremely indulgent and tasted like fudgy mousse. The ice cream definitely helped to balance it out! What we got: Onion soup Scallop en croûte Wild pacific halibut 16oz p.e.i. rib eye The onion soup and the scallop were good, but the entrees were crazy disappointing. Even though the halibut was cooked very well, the flavors did not go well together. At least it came with mashed potatoes. The rib eye was even worse. The quality of the steak being thin, chewy, & fatty did not meet its price point. It also did not have a char or enough seasoning. The piece we had did not even include the rib cap. Arrived at 6 PM - we were lucky to be seated at the prime southwest corner table where we had a panoramic view of Lake Ontario & CN Tower, and the landscape stretching towards Mississauga. We all had a great time here. We (7 people) had two appetizers (onion soup & bison tartare) and shared the chef's daily selection of seafood (oysters, scallops, shrimp cocktails, smoked salmon, and calamari fries). The bison tartar (mixed with different textured roasted vegetables and foie gras parfait) is refreshing and rich, a great starter. The chef's selection of seafood was just OK. Of course, we did not have 7 pieces of each item, but because our family members have different preferences for seafood, we did not fight over the same items lol. So, we thought that the size of the platter was good enough for us. For the main, I had Tournedos Rossini (rare). My partner had Lamb en Crépinette. I loved Tournedos Rossini. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly rare, served on a crouton, and topped with melt-in-the-mouth seared foie gras. The classic Perigueux sauce's distinct truffle flavor matched with the crispy burdock arranged over the meat. I loved the fried celery root puree which came as a garnish for my beef. It had truffle flavor and gave it a fresh and earthy tone to the rare filet mignon. Very satisfying. It was my favorite of the night. My partner was a bit disappointed by the size of the Lamb en Crepinette's loin portion. It was a very small piece. Although it was absolutely good - perfectly cooked "super tender" loin served with flavorful morel sauce - the size was really small. It came with a small bowl of a nice lamb shank stew, but he wished he could enjoy the loin portion more than having this stew as an accompaniment. As we enjoyed the food, we caught a breathtaking view of the sunset. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. We asked him to take our group pictures a few times - and every time we asked, he was happy to do it - I appreciated him for capturing our very rare family get-together moment. First off, the view is spectacular and worth going here regardless. The drinks are very solid, I got a Jack Daniels and Coke and it had a very generous pour of Jack Daniels. My first course was their take on a chicken wing. The dish was creative and super flavorful, although it could've been bigger. I then got the lamb saddle with the side of pasta. The lamb was super tender and perfectly cooked. The creamed kale was phenomenal, especially since I would usually never eat that. The pasta was cooked perfectly, but nothing to write home about. The service was very good. They do a fantastic job explaining exactly what your dish is when they present it. Overall, it's a bit pricey for the portions, but when you factor in the view and everything, it's worth it. read more

Tried the Canoe tasting menu and I must say, they do not disappoint. The tasting menu consist of: smoked oyster (charred game, puffed rice) + nori grissini (foie gras) pumpkin soup (butternut velouté, sweet potato, anise) chicken wing (sunchoke, truffle, Albufera, ziti pasta, morels) lingcod (scallop, celeriac, charcoal, Champagne cream) 54-hour short rib (cheek pastrami, sweetbreads, caramelized mushroom, Café de Paris butter) chanterelle (birch syrup, sea buckhorn) pear dessert (sortilège, hazelnuts, sumac) petit four My favourite dish would have to be the chicken wings. The sunchoke made the dish slightly sweet and made the dish sweet and savoury. After a quick trick up the squeaky elevator, you're at Canoe, the 54th floor, and the views were pretty on a foggy afternoon! I'm used to the Chicago skyline, but the Toronto views were nice on a 75 degree summer day. You can see the Lake Ontario and the city from the floor to ceiling windows, and the natural lighting around noon on a Wednesday was quite charming. Although we got there early (12:00), they seated us promptly for our 12:30pm reservation. The restaurant was pretty quiet at first, but once 12:30pm rolled around, the ambiance became quite lively. We loved seeing the chefs hard at work in the open kitchen. Notably, probably one of the most racially diverse kitchens we've seen. We ordered the following for our lunch: Canoe Old Fashioned - a little on the sweeter side for my husband's tastes 3/5 Lemon Ginger - tart, refreshing, more lemony than ginger, topped with a slice of dried lemon and strawberry 4/5 The bread and butter - great texture to the crust and super soft middle, butter was solid 5/5 Quebec Foie Gras - According to my husband, this was the best appetizer he's ever had. It was a little on the fatty side, but the beets were very refreshing. Our waiter recommended getting the bread to have with the dish. 5/5 Wild Mushroom Soup - this was a good soup. A bit more on the lighter side as it wasn't cream based. The flavor profile was more so on the front of your tongue. A little salty, but not bad for a soup 3/5 Halibut - tempura style onion rings were definitely the hit of this dish, the fish was very light and flaky, mashed potatoes were on point! Overall, 4/5 dish! Lamb - I forgot I don't like lamb, but the dish was pretty good. A little bit more on the salty side, but the broccolini and the crunchy kale were a nice balance to the heaviness of this dish 3.5/5 Overall, the foie gras were the best part. Shout out to Godwin for his amazing service from start to finish. The total came out to be around $225 with 20% tip. Would highly recommend Canoe for those who enjoy fine dining and great views! My colleague found this restaurant and we wanted to enjoy after a successful year and busy client meetings day. So we decided to come to Canoe. The spot is beautiful! The views, wow! Nestled on the 54th floor of a typical office building and overlooking Toronto with the CN tower right next door. The restaurant itself is certainly a spot to visit. The service was spot on. The chef and team were able to accommodate our changes to the menu (with me no pork and others at my group). They were gracious with our requests. Especially we all ordered the pre-fixe menu with multiple courses. Let's start off - - Atlantic oyster: hmm this was a shock, sure it arrived ON an oyster shell however the taste. Nothing of oyster flavor. It was a puff pastry. Bizarre, we were all a little stomped of this course - basically to start off, not exactly on the right food - venison tartare - very small portion only about two spoons, doesn't really taste like anything much I have ever had. Also had this odd tasting soup on the right. Too hearty to be beef tartare and too flavorless to be tuna tartare, this was different but not for a good thing, but glad I got to try it! Will likely not opt to have this again by choice - finally my fav (I opted out of the bacon/pork) so the chef made me an onion soup inside an onion! wow! Loved it! This was the most tasteful onion soup/consommé I have ever tasted! I wish I can learn to make it! - lobster tail - good, wrapped in a crispy kale on top of lobster cream - filet - loved how this filet was cooked! Very tender with foie gras parfait and a scope of mashed spinach. Enjoyed this dish! - followed by desserts and tarragon ice cream (tarragon had pop rocks, which I was surprised to feel it popping in my mouth) Overall for the views and service, completely worth it. We had the seven course tasting menu! The view from the 51st floor is hard to beat. But honestly, the locally sourced and fresh forward mindset of this menu is incredible. It's hard to add more to any review you will read. I can say, for special occasions if you make note of it on your reservation - there will be a card on your table. Ours said happy anniversary. It was a very sweet touch. Each server that would come by would acknowledge it. At the end, they give you an envelop for the card and the menu to go into. Everything is spot on.
