My company hosted a dinner event at Stratus for a total of about 60 people. It is a very nice space for a dinner event with amazing views of downtown Toronto. The restaurant is located in a building that looks like a corporate building with no visible signs for the restaurant. Therefore, a coworker and I hung out in the lobby area to direct attendees. Started off with a delicious hugo spritz then it was slowly downhill from there. We had a four course meal as part of an event, here was the rundown: - shrimp cocktail (3 shrimp and cocktail sauce, extremely basic but I liked it) - spinach salad which had a severe lack of other veggies and dressing - tenderloin with mashed potatoes which were totally bland on their own but salvaged by some demi glacé sauce - blueberry cake which tasted way too healthy Overall, it's a no from me dawg. My friend gave a great recommendation to try Stratus on the 36th floor of the TD Waterhouse building . Protip- request a table by the window and you get some beautiful views of Toronto. As advertised, this is an elegant, upscale restaurant with a beautiful view of the water. We came here as a larger group and so ordered from the prix fixe menu. I must say that the entire booking process was quite pleasant - the person responsible for events was very responsive and helpful, from sending us the menus and contract forms to answering questions about dietary restrictions. For appetizers, we had a choice of salad or soup. The "Caesar" salad had an interesting twist, made using kale instead of lettuce and with soft panisse croutons (these were a huge hit, despite the odd sounding name). The soup had a nice texture but was slightly too sour (all I could taste was the tomato flavour). I selected the salmon entree (my go-to order at restaurants in this area) and was astonished by the excellent quality of the dish! The flesh was exceptionally tender, covered by a layer of crispy, oily salmon skin. The light sweetness of the beets and baby bok choy well complimented the savoury fish. Dessert too was superb: the lemony crème brûlée contained strong sour notes to offset the sweet custard. Oh, and of course the caramelized sugar was perfect! Now for the not so perfect. Drinks were great, except for the coffee. Portion sizes are on the small side (I wasn't full after a 3-course meal...but it could just be me haha). The staff greeting us at the entrance and taking our coats were wonderful, friendly and warm. The waiter actually serving us - not so great. The service was quite rushed and almost offhanded. He literally whipped the plates away when clearing the table, and never once checked on us during our time there. Also of note is the noise level: unfortunately, at peak lunchtime, we could hardly hear even the person sitting one seat away. It's quiet if you choose to dine at 2pm though. It's the other downtown restaurant with a great view. Doesn't get as much airtime but it's pretty good. Had the lamb meatloaf which I've never seen on another menu, and was very tasty. Service was great and we asked for a view when making the Rez and got an awesome table which was extra nice given they were very busy and we booked fairly late. Only two negative things. First they charge for bread -- c'mon really? And second, the bathroom is in the athletic club facilities where you literally walk through the locker room to get there. Just weird. read more

Stratus is a casual upscale restaurant located on the 36th floor of a TD tower in the financial district. The décor is modern and provides views of the financial core and of the waterfront. Tip: ask for the restaurant washrooms instead of being directed to the Toronto Athletic Club washrooms (if you would like). This was my second time dining at Stratus - this time I was there for an event. Nicole, our server, took excellent care of us. She was professional, attentive, courteous, and hard working. She delivered her top-notch service with such ease. For example, while there was a set menu for our table, she was able to work with the kitchen to make requested changes. In addition, she was attuned to the diner's preferences, for example, she offered options to those who did not drink alcohol (but did not explicitly say so). And we were never rushed - she stayed until almost midnight until our party decided to depart before the elevators lock. Thank you, Nicole! Onto the food: KALE & BABY RED ROMAINE CAESAR SALAD ($16 on the website menu) roasted garlic dressing, parmesan crisp, panisse croutons The use of baby kale was a unique twist on Caesar salad. The stems on the baby kale made it slightly cumbersome to eat at times but that's just me being a whiner (I do not mind eating the whole plant - more nutrition!). Overall, good salad that was not over dressed. CRISP SKINNED BC CHINOOK SALMON ($35 on the website menu) roasted golden and crimson beets, sauteed baby bok choy, lemon dill The salmon was cooked perfectly. The skin was crisp and the flesh left moist and unadulterated. The beets and bok choy were great accompaniments (never have enough vegetables)! The sauce tasted like butter lemon dill, it was citrusy and buttery. The sauce was drizzled around the salmon so one can decide how much of it to use. Excellent salmon dish. read more

Came here for drinks and appetizers on a Tuesday evening for a work event. We thought they would give us a semi-private room, but it turned out to be just the side of the bar area. There weren't a lot of people in the place, so our group pretty much took up all the space at the bar. The views looking outside are nice. Appetizers were okay, but very heavy on the cheese. We had a huge cheese platter with fruit, arancini, shrimp, pear and goat cheese crostini, mini grilled cheese sandwiches, burger sliders, and mini cheesecake bites. Service was good. First review of the new year! The atmosphere, view and ambiance is just breathtaking. It was my moms birthday and my family decided to surprise her by taking her downtown. This restaurant has always been on my list so why not save it for a special occasion. To start, I made a reservation online a few days prior. After getting there we were seated quickly and our server was very attentive. We had some of the breadsticks to start, along with salad and mushroom soup. For the mains I had the burger, my dad had the salmon and my sister had the buttered shrimp. Definitely one of the best burgers I've had. Very fresh and well seasoned. It came with friends along with home made ketchup. To be honest, the fries were great but I wasn't a big fan of the ketchup. It was more like a sweet tomato purée. Maybe I just like Heinz too much! I had a taste of the buttered shrimp and it was excellent. Probably would be my second choice after the burger. The salmon looked a bit small, but it was still very tasty and filling for lunch. Beautiful view in the evening. Came late on a Wednesday evening and was fairly empty. Ash Wednesday so we both had fish plates. The salmon was delicious and the fresh catch special was phenomenal. Honestly best seafood we've ever had. Little to no wait time seeing as we arrived a little before 8:30, kitchen closes right at 8:30 on weekdays. Service was great, attentive and friendly hostesses. Tip: Bread is not free if your server asks if you'd like any after placing the order. Still pretty good with a side of a hummus sauce. The night view was amazing. The servers are very kind and polite. My boyfriend and I had a romantic dinner on Valentine's Day. Overall the experience was good. There's just one thing. When we made a reservation, they didn't tell us it's gonna be a valentines special menu. We checked at the website, still the regular menu. When we walked in and sat down , we noticed that the menu was different from the website. It's a valentine special menu. It's fixed. No price on it. When we asked, the server told us it's 85 Cad per person, which is waaaaay more than the regular menu price. We didn't know that beforehand. My boyfriend received a call just a week ago before valentines from the restaurant. They told him they would charge him if he didn't show up, which totally makes sense, but they didn't tell us there's gonna be a special valentines menu with a special price. So I just think the restaurant should inform people of the special occasion price or menu when they confirm reservations. Also more information should be post on websites. I understand restaurants want to make more money on Valentine's Day, but customers also have the right to know more info beforehand. Later the manager came and offer us drinks and twenty five per cent off on everything, which was good. I think I will eat there again. The night view was spectacular. Very romantic. read more

Came here for a lunch with my work team. I made the reservation on Open Table and they kept it no problem. I think one of the servers was training because she was shadowing our actual server for the duration of the lunch. They got us drinks pretty quickly but were slow to catch our closed-menu cue that we were ready to order. Again, maybe they were preoccupied re: server in training. We had the bread basket to share for the table- it comes with a DELICIOUS spread. Everyone at the table got soups except for me and they said it was good. I got the albacore tuna nicoise. It was pretty mediocore for the price. The flavours were good and it was well-presented, but I don't think I'd be happy if I paid $27 for it. The tuna looked a bit too white (vs pink, which I think it should be), which led me to believe that it wasn't the BEST cut of the tuna. I guess it's an ambience-first restaurant, and the views ARE amazing. But I'm not really curious to come back. read more

Coming here on a weekday at lunch time can be packed, filled with well dressed business people having lunch meetings. I came here with my team of coworkers for an early Christmas lunch. Reservations can be easily made on the open table app. Service was exceptional, our server was patient and attentive with a good sense of humour. For appetizers, I tried the salmon tartare and I thought the highlight were the chips that accompanied the tartare. They were like wavy chips that were freshly out of the fryer. My co workers had the soup of the day which they really enjoyed as well. For mains, we tried the salmon, steak and duck leg. I had the duck leg and it was the best duck I've tried at a fine dining restaurant! Crispy skin that I saved for last with really tender meat. It also came with lots of fresh vegetables and a good amount of potatoes on the side, I was so satisfied. But of course we had to end with desert. We tried their ice cream cookie sandwich and bread pudding, both were great. We shared the two desserts amongst the three of us, otherwise too much for one person. read more

It was a lovely little date night at Stratus. Wonderful atmosphere, knowledgeable and helpful waitstaff, and most of the food was good. We had the swordfish (COTD) and the burger with fries. The swordfish was a decent portion, the chickpeas, arugula, and other greens it was paired with was very good. Except the mandarins/citrus fruit, it was very bitter. The sear and the mouthfeel of the swordfish was very good. No fishy taste. A very small part of the swordfish was overcooked but overall was a delicious plate. At $37 it was okay value. The burger was good as well, disappointing to see it paired with iceberg lettuce but I'm not complaining. The sauce was yummy. The meat itself was juicy and done to a medium. Surprisingly what we enjoyed the most was the fries and their homemade "ketchup" . It was more of a tomato jam but it was good! Overall an unremarkable burger for $25 aside from the homemade ketchup. For dessert we had the goat cheese and sour cherry cheesecake. We were feeling adventurous and it paid off. The whole thing was just really good. Highly recommended. A good value for $14. Overall, we enjoyed the service, the food was decent/good, and given its location and where the husband works, we may be back again. Unfortunately wasn't in the mood to drink tonight so didn't get any wine pairings but had a decent list and the waitstaff seemed knowledgeable. I'm going to title this review "So Far So Good", because Stratus will be playing a huge role in my life over the coming year and there will definitely be follow-up reviews as 2015 progresses. My fiancé booked Stratus as our wedding venue in March 2014 for our October 2015 wedding. We booked it based solely on the view, the fact it is in our price range, and overall atmosphere. When we put down our deposit we hadn't even tried the food (I trusted the glowing Yelp reviews), so when I took my mother, sister, and future mother-in-law for lunch a couple weeks ago I was so nervous that the place wouldn't impress. My fears were quickly dispelled. I made a reservation and I am glad that I did. It was a Friday lunch hour and the place got BUSY. However, it never felt packed or crowded. I counted about 80 people in the restaurant at one point, and we're only planning for about 60 at the wedding, so now I know that there will be more than enough room for my guests to stretch out and enjoy themselves. We were seated promptly with a beautiful view of the lake and the island. I ordered the butter chicken for lunch, and the food was served quickly. The chicken had some really good heat to it, and the rice and naan were good compliments to the spicy dish. I had expected the portions to be on the smaller side, but I ended up not being able to finish everything on my plate before feeling on the full side. My only complaint from the whole day involved, believe it or not, the water. We were asked if we wanted still or sparkling water. Three of the four of us chose still and one chose sparkling. Had we known that a large, $10.50 bottle would be opened for one person, I have no doubt that all of us would have chosen still. I doubt that a whole bottle of water was consumed, and $10.50 is an incredible mark-up for carbonated water. Where it's common place for sparkling water to be complimentary, this was a bit of a shock to see on the bill. Initially we weren't going to have dessert, but after reading the menu we threw all caution to the wind and decided to try the creme brûlée and sticky toffee pudding. The cream brûlée was appropriately creamy with a delicious sugar top, and the whisky infused caramel topping on the sticky toffee pudding easily stole the show. After tip (and the overpriced water), lunch with dessert came to about $200 for all four of us, which is perfectly reasonable given the quality of the food and the stunning scenery. The service was friendly and fast, though I do hope it will be slower paced on my big day (however, I chalk that up to the differences between catering to the 1-hour lunch crowd and catering to a relaxed wedding environment). All in all, I have no doubts that Stratus will provide the perfect venue for my big day and I can't wait to experience everything they have to offer. read more

Expensive place with great views and mediocre food. I came here for a vendor dinner and networking. Had a bottle of wine before the food arrived. Wine was awesome, Pinot Grigio, Niagara. Appy's were great too, thought I've had better. Main meal was disappointing. Although asparagus cream soup was great, the steak (striploin) was not. Chewy and rubbery, even though I had it medium. It does not live up to the pricing. Seems like this place is trying to compete with Canoe in the next tower over, but except the views, it is not even close. Canoe food is so awesome that you forget about how gorgeous the view is. Here you mostly look out of the window. Service was great though, as you'd expect at a place priced at this level. read more

Great view from the 36th floor, definitely quite the spot for dinner. I really enjoyed the music they played, a good kind of mellow and relaxing. My main was the citrus & guava-glazed salmon. Unfffff, SO GOOD. The bits of papaya went perfectly with the salmon, and I could eat an entire bowl of the artichoke chips they sprinkled in the dish. Such a great combination of flavours and I would definitely go again to try some other items on their menu on a free evening. read more

Sadly, I did not enjoy my experience at Stratus despite the beautiful view and the nice ambiance of the restaurant. The food was just so average and one dish was essentially a complete waste of calories. I had lunch at Stratus yesterday with work colleagues. I ordered the Mojito which I promptly asked the waiter to take back as it was easily one of the worst cocktails I've ever had. It essentially tasted like watered down lemonade and not the homemade kind. I have made mojitos myself and I know that they are not complicated to make. It was really disappointing that the bartender yesterday was unable to execute a simple and common drink. We ordered the bread basket (truly nothing special; it should have been be brought to the table at no extra charge in my view); the Golden and Crimson Beet Salad and the Steak Tartare. I did enjoy both appetizers. They were beautifully presented, colourful and flavourful. The tartare had an appropriate amount of salt which I often find to be lacking in this dish. For our mains, my friend and I decided to split the Crispy Skinned BC Chinook Salmon and the Short Rib Tagliatelle. I really appreciated that the kitchen actually split the dishes for us. That was a nice touch. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the skin was perfectly crispy. It was very good. The tagliatelle was, however, a huge disappointment and essentially a complete loss. I wish I had taken a picture of it but alas I did not. The pieces of short rib was tender but the dish otherwise had no sauce, no salt and no flavour. I had to ask for salt and pepper. The pasta was essentially flavourless. I've had similar dishes many times and have never been this disappointed. I mentioned to the waiter that we did not enjoy the pasta dish but it stayed on the bill. The third member of our party ordered the burger and fries and was quite happy with his meal. I did not taste the burger but the fries were very good. They came with what looked like a homemade ketchup which was tasty as well. While I did enjoy some of the dishes (hence the 3 star review instead of 2), all in all, this was a disappointing experience. If you're looking for a great meal with a beautiful view of the lake at roughly the same price point, I recommend Canoe. read more

What attracted me to Stratus was the 36th floor view. Came here for dinner with a few of my friends and was not disappointed at all. Loved the decor of the restaurant, the space was a lot larger than I had anticipated and everything shouted very sophisticated and upscale. Greeted upon arrival, we were given the option for coat check which I loved. Our table for six was waiting for us (with reservation) with a great view of the city as promised by one of the hostesses there. Service was spectacular, our server (whose name I do not recall), was very professional and everything I would expect from such a high-class restaurant. I did find however the one flaw which was our server who seemed to be pushing us to order drinks. I ordered the Grilled New York Striploin (medium-rare) and it had the perfect amount of juice and tenderness. Also the portions were enormous. I expected a tiny piece of steak (don't ask me why) but they gave me two fairly large pieces which was very satisfying. Had a lovely dining experience here and I would love to come back to try out their brunch menu and enjoy their gorgeous city view in the daytime. read more

We booked this place for a Christmas dinner with about 40 people. I was surprised I had never eaten or been here before considering it's smack in the middle of the financial district. Overall service was very good. They did rush us in and out, so if you want to mingle etc. when booking in a party, it's maybe not the best choice. Given the time of the year it was acceptable Food was good for a mass order. Dessert was excellent. Beer and cocktail selection was also above average as they carry a number of imports that they'll include in the private bar (delerium, leffe, etc). I probably would not come here by choice for a regular lunch/dinner given the price as it is nothing spectacular, but caters do the higher end Toronto Athletic Club on the same floor. Side note: The washrooms are in the change rooms, so expect to see naked people when you have to pee. read more

I started off my day with a business breakfast at Stratus. A really nice way to start off a Thursday! Stratus is an intimate little restaurant with floor to ceiling windows overlooking Lake Ontario. For those who don't know, it's located on the 36th floor of 79 Wellington, just outside the Toronto Athletic Club. Given its location, it's no surprise that it caters to business clientele. There is a good hum of converation, but it's certainly quiet enough to have a business meeting or catch up with a colleague over pancakes and coffee. Speaking of pancakes, the banana pancakes are quite good, as is the yogurt and fresh fruit. Some items are a little overpriced (i.e. $8 for a bowl of regular cereal?) but it really is a hidden gem for breakfast meetings. read more

A hidden gem for sure! I'd never even heard of this place until recently, and it's in such a central location, close to Union Station as well as my office building. It's not a huge restaurant, but I like it that way, it seems cozier and more intimate, but it's still very classy and nice. They have large windows on the side so you can get a great view of the lake and some city lights in the evening. There menu is a little bit on the smaller side, but the food is really, really good. I ordered the citrus and guava glazed atlantic salmon, which came with papaya salsa, field greens, and jerusalem artichoke chips. It was the perfect blend of sweet and savoury with the papaya, and a good mixture of different textures: the crunchiness of the chips and the soft flesh of the salmon, which was perfectly cooked and not dry at all. I loved it and would definitely recommend! My friend got the blue crab cobb salad and it looked amazing. It came out on a really big dish and had tons of vegetables and avocado and a good amount of crab, and she said it was delicious! I definitely would love to come back to this place! It's classy, but has such a cool, chill, environment - and they play great music, lots of Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran crooning in the background. And for a place as nice as this, located on the 36th floor of a building in the downtown core, the prices are super affordable and I would even consider to be cheap for downtown standards. Work lunch, on the 31st floor at the TD South towers was a great experience. Much like the panorama at Bay and Bloor, but with a better, unobstructed view of the city. Definitely fancy. The service was phenominal, and catered to our attention, the food was quite an experience. I ended up having the Brome duck lake ragout. Pappardelle Pasta, Portobello Mushrooms, Spinach and shaved parmesan in almost a soupy type of pasta dish. The flavors colaborated well with each other, and the portion was perfect for lunch! definitely a 4/5 There was still room for dessert, hence I ordered their Blood Orange Sorbet in a pastry dough bowl served with some fruits...great way to end off the lunch 4/5 read more

I've been to Stratus twice for business breakfast, and it is the perfect spot for just that. The view is absolutely stunning. To sit and watch the planes take off from Billy Bishop while you chat about work is a great way to start the day. Considering the location and the clientele, I was actually really surprised how cheap it was. Breakfast for three, with multiple rounds of coffee, came to C$70 including tax and tip. The food was lovely, and the espresso was quite decent. One of the better ones I've had in Toronto. The service was a little slower the second time I went than the first, but we were also there a bit later (9:30 instead of 8:00), so it may just have been that. Would recommend for sure! read more

I had lunch at Stratus for lunch - located at Bay and Wellington, it is right in the downtown core, making it super convenient to dine out for lunch or dinner. I ordered the blue crab cob salad, which is chopped romaine salad, smoked bacon, crumbled Stilton, cherry tomatoes, avocados, small poached eggs, all dressed in a red wine vinaigrette. The dressing had a really distinct taste when coupled with the blue crab. It was a very interesting salad; the avocado was also perfectly ripe. The Stilton is a bit strong, so if blue cheese is not to your fancy, you may not enjoy that aspect of it. The portion size I found to be good, but may be on the smaller size for a salad entree . The servings of crab was definitely sufficient. I also ordered a green tea latte, thinking it would be matcha powder. It turns out it was made with green tea, however the latte was really well made and I thoroughly enjoy it. The view of the restaurant is amazing; located on the 36th floor, you can see plenty of sunlight and parts of the lake. read more

Mostly it's the menu has never been all that appealing to me. The mushroom soup is my default app and an omelette. Prices are fairly steep for an omelette and soup. The prices and lack of appeal on the menu bring it down a star for me. The food is of low quality. The beef is full of fat veins. The filet mignon is a huge chunk of meet with over cooked vegetables. Also not a large selection on the menu. The view is amazing read more

Yes, great service! Yes, chic place for breakfast meetings!! Yes, amazing view of the Lake!!! but the food was just a-ok! Had the Western omelette with a side of Canadian bacon (yes, bacon's the way to start the day!!) Was good, but not wow'ed!! Expected a little better!! Also had a latte that was... meh!!
