They sell a large selection of beer (especially Michigan craft beer), wine, liquor, soda, mixers, snacks, and other items, like cigars. Whenever I've been here, I usually get greeted and asked if I need help within a few minutes of arriving. They have a $3,000 bottle of whiskey, if you're into that type of thing. I've been looking for a really comprehensive well stocked liquor store that carries imbibeables beyond the norm. I think I finally found what I was looking for. Downtown, tucked behind Coney Joe's, Canopy has a little of everything and when you walk in it seems like a lot of specialty bottles are at your fingertips just to pique your interest. I came to peruse and left with a new bourbon that the owner recommended as something I'd like more than Blanton's. Big words! We'll see if he was right but as for his store, it was wall to wall stocked with great finds. A great beer wall, racks of wine and an entire wall of booze. After dinner at a sushi restaurant in the same parking lot, I decided to walk here. My friend has never been here since it looks shady from the outside. But oh my, it's a treasure to be discovered! They have beer and other drinks you won't find anywhere else in this country. I found German, Dutch and Belgian beers I enjoyed on my European vacation that I wouldn't find anywhere else but online...and now, this place! Duvel, Delirium, Franziskaner, Wells Banana Bread, Wells Sticky Toffee Pudding, moonshine, cherry beer, organic strawberry beer, etc. They have a huge selection of fantastic drinks. The people that work here were very helpful too. They helped me find what I was looking for and the one they didn't have they were willing to order for me - too bad I was only visiting. read more

Well from what I've read in previous reviews I am sad to report that the customer experience has not improved. I was picking up some dry cleaning next door and my husband suggested I pick him up some beer and recommend this place. He has shopped here a lot so I figure it'll be an easy stop. I put on my mask and go inside. I'm looking for Ballast Point lager, which my husband informs me he has bought here recently. I look and look and look but to no avail. I find a couple of weird beers that my husband can use as currency at his friend (a beer journo's) monthly cellar parties. I also find some deep friend peanuts and figure 'when in America...' An older gentleman come over an asks if I need help. I ask about the Ballast Point and he tells me he hasn't stocked it in years. Strange as my husband just bought some here the previous week but maybe we were mistaken. I look for something else. I take my time (my husband gets pickier about beer with each passing year ). The staff are bs-ing behind the counter. One younger gentleman and 2 older. One in particular is f-ing and blinding about everything but it's a beer store, not a nunnery. I make my selection and am heading over to the counter when the loud member of staff starts talking about me: ' who does that f****** ***** think she is, walking around here so long with that stupid mask?' Younger member of staff: Dude, she's still here. Me: Yes I am and I heard what you just called me. I don't have to shop here you know. But I was told this was a good place! Queue awkward silence while I stare at them and debate whether to walk out or stay. I am shocked as this was so unprovoked. But I don't want to disappoint my beer fan back home so I stay and pay. More fool me. The other older guy - the one I spoke with earlier - apologizes and tells me 'He's not one of ours'. Well he was behind your counter, thus representing your business. I am gifted the two odd bottles of beer. I feel sad. Was it the mask or is this just a really bad business? My husband said he is never going there again. Prices too high. Selection is good but not much better than anywhere else decent these days. Also - the owner just recommended a Zinfandel to me (up selling me a few bucks) for me to get home and realize it's an absolutely Zin. He even said it's his "favorite Zin". Anyone who has had decent Zin knows that this is terrible wine (too sweet and smooth to be a good full bodied lip-smackin Zin). If you don't actually know about wine don't make a recommendation! For the record, I'm not nearly as big of a wine snob as I sound here - it really is a terrible recommendation!!!! And I paid $17 for garbage wine. Annoying! read more

Need a weird kind of beer that is hard to find? I bet they got it! Need a weird bottle of liquor and you can't find it anywhere? They probably have that too. Looking for a good wine? They have a huge selection! For such a small space they really pack it in! They know their stuff too and can recommend something if you are not sure what you want. I could spend hours in this place just browsing. I definitely never leave with JUST what I came for. Today I went in for a six pack of beer and after quickly perusing the cases and picking something boring for my husband I attempted to get out the door with nothing else. Then I spied cotton candy liquor and decided I had to try it. The owner recommended drinking it with tonic water and fetched me some which reminded me, I like Gin. So I perused those, chose a bottle and cut myself off. By the way, cotton candy liquor and tonic is deeelish! I highly recommend this place for your holiday alcohol needs. I use to go to this place every few months but after today never going again. As I'm writing this we are in the midst of a pandemic. They have a sign saying to wear mask but clearly it means nothing because when I went in no one wearing mask, customers or staff. Great customer service! Helped me carry my bags and bottle to the vehicle. Thanked me with a hand shake and even offered advice. Huge selection of beer, wine and liquor. But, overall chill space. The Canopy is a great wine and spirits shop. I have been going there for 35 years. John and Sam are the most knowledgeable guys in Livingston County for fine wines and craft beer and liquors. Super friendly and personable. The Bourbons and other high end products they carry are second to none. I highly recommend you stop by and give them a try for your libation needs! Selection: Very Good! Prices: ahh not so great. hard to find beers your going to pay more for anyway and thats fine but compared to where i used to get beer in Lansing this place is expensive. Service: This is really what made me not like it here. I had really good service from a younger worker (maybe 16-18 years old) the first 2 times i went here. However, any time i deal with the older adult workers it is really bad. on one occation i brought back a 6 pack for deposit and the (i think owner) got mad at me and gave me the "dont bring bottles back here its too much work for me" attitude. When i got home and looked at my receipt he dident even give me my $.60 for the deposits. I went back a couple months later for a bottle of whiskey and asked for advise. after telling him i had not had very many whiskeys but had been turned on to them when i went to scotland he pulled a $80 bottle off the shelf and said "buy this you will like it" (this being before i told him anything about what i had tried, liked or disliked) I told the man that i did not like smokey whiskey and wanted something cleaner and lighter to try. he put the bottle back and grabbed a $40 bottle and said you'll like this. i replied "whats it like" at which point he took the bottle back and gave me another bottle. All the while he was giving me an attitude that felt like "listen here you punk just buy something and go get drunk" I am 27 years old, young yes, but have been trying whiskey since i was 22 and was really just looking for some advise from someone who had tried more then myself. instead I felt like I was working with a sleazy liqure store owner who really dident believe i wanted to enjoy some whiskey. needles to say i left and drove to another place to spend my $70 on a bottle of scotch. Overall the selection is good, but the service sucked. Sad to say after 6 trips to this store I'll gladly drive 10miles further to avoid going here. Update: I went in again to return some empties that were purchased here in the past (some mine a few from friends who had brought beer to my house) I purchased a 6 pack with no price tag on it. The owner scans it and it comes up as 12.99 and tells me the total is $13 something (I assume tax) I ask about the bottle deposit and he says "yeah I got it". I reply "it rang up as 12.99 I had 20 bottles my total should be $11 something" he says "no the beer is more then that your total is $13.xx" I walk out pissed that this dude would really like to me and try to rip me off for $2 in deposit money. I'm so sad- we thought we'd found a really great place. It's huge, the prices are great, the selection is AMAZING, and, bonus, it doesn't even feel sketchy :-P But then the owner sold my husband a very old ceramic bottle of bourbon- still sealed, still in the box, quite heavy- for $50. When we got home that night, it was completely empty- it had evaporated, I assume. We'd expected a little evaporation, but it was bone dry. So we called the shop and the person who answered the phone said, yeah, come on back (we live about 40 minutes away) and we'll give you store credit for it. So the next day, husband hauls himself back up to the shop only to be told that "Nope, no can do, you bought it. I assumed you *knew* it would be completely empty. Duh." First of all: Dude, you sold us an empty bottle and didn't think to say "Hey, you know, that bottle might be empty"? FWIW, those empty bottles go for twenty bucks less on ebay and they're HONEST about the fact that they're empty. Second: Your employee approved a return over the phone and you're not going to honor it after we drove all the way back out there? Third: This one sale is more important to you than a new borderline alcoholic customer with expensive taste in whiskey? Bad decision, man. Being cool about that return probably would've made you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars over the years- we were really impressed with the shop and planning to come back quite a bit. Yes, I know, caveat emptor...my husband should've double checked, but the other similar decanters had liquid in them and it's not exactly insane to assume that when you buy a liquor bottle at a liquor store, it'll have liquor IN it. Refusing to take it back (after telling us you would) is just crappy customer service. Which is a bummer, because it's otherwise a very nice store. Oh well. read more

If you are looking for good whiskey, the top wine to impress the lady, or that obscure beer in Brighton, this is the place to go. They have most of the Irish whiskeys, including Tyrconnell, Green Spot, and Yellow Spot. If you're very lucky, they'll have the impossible to find Bourbon of Pappy Van Winkle. I found it here, but couldn't afford it. Price is on the high side for beer, but Canopy is known for its selection. The service is great as well and these guys know their whiskey. I bought two Bourbons before as gifts from here. I don't drink Bourbon. The bourbon drinkers I know loved the bottles I bought. read more

Nice selection but everything is overpriced and beer prices always change upward at the whim of the owner . Poor service. They don't give you a receipt. My last trip to this store, took some empties back of ONLY specialty beers I had bought there (that cannot be returned elsewhere). The owner ripped me off when ringing the purchase, gave virtually no credit for my returns (I realized later after adding up the purchase and returns in my head since they gave no receipt). I used to patronize this store quite regularly, but will never buy anything from there ever again. read more

I love coming here because their selection is second to none. They don't just carry a lot of unique domestic craft brews, they also carry numerous rare imports. They even carry a beer from a local brewery near where I used to live in England. I'm writing this review specifically because of some great customer service I received at the store recently. I purchased some beer here and the bottoms of the cans were slightly corroded and a couple of the beers were leaking. I called them up, and they let me come in right away return the beer and select new beer. They even gave me one of my favorite beers for free for my trouble. There is no way to run a business without occasionally having small issues like the one I experienced. It's all about how a business owner reacts when an issue comes up. The reaction from the staff at Canopy was fantastic, and I will continue to be a loyal customer. read more

Stopped in on way to work....was a little out of the way, but I've seen this place advertised so thought I'd check it out. Looked at beer and bourbon selections in particular. Struck up conversation with someone and asked about a rarity - George T. Stagg. He said, yes, I have it...$700. Really!? I can understand holding special bottles for loyal customers....if that's the case, no problem...say that. But this is price gouging at a level I've never seen. 89.95 bottle marked up to 700. (and pretty much every other product was overpriced too). First and last visit. Also interesting is I've had two random people send me a message that I'm referencing the wrong bourbon. Wondering if workers from store are trying to cover this up? Buffalo trace antique collection George T. Stagg (which is what I asked about) retailed at 89.95 this year. The guy behind the counter said 700. Stores will sometimes up the price on rare bottles. Not uncommon at all...in fact it's the norm. (Seen it in stores this past fall from anywhere between 129 and 400) But this once again is ridiculous price gouging...and they know it. read more

John, Did the most gracious thing, my wife bought me a $300.00 of Single Malt Wiskey for my 60th B'day. When I "tried" to open it the CORK BROKE OFF IN THE BOTTLE.I called John, he said "Bring it back". When I arrived, he did not have another bottle of the same Scotch. John then gave me a more expensive 31 year old Bottle with NO EXTRA CHARGE..John said he should of told my wife to but the bottle on it's side for some time to soak the cork. So, this happened back in May...had thought about putting in a review but never got around to it. Read one of the other reviews regarding getting shorted on bottle refunds and that motivated me to write this review. I am a Pastry Chef and do Beer and Chocolate pairing/tasting parties. Back in May 2015, I purchased over $250 worth of different beers from the Canopy Bottle Shoppe. I have shopped there often over the years I have lived in Pinckney and with their selection, it is a one stop shop for all the different beers I use. The next week, when I took all the empties back (most of the beers I purchase there I have to take the empties back there specifically, because not to many stores sell them), one of the older guys that is always there when I go in was sorting all my empties into the shopping cart in the back of the store. When he was done, about half of my empties were given back to me with a "we don't take these back" as the reason. I told him "I bought all of these beers right here at your store." I was informed, quite rudely, that the ones he gave back, they do not sell, so take them somewhere else. I grabbed the first can sitting on top (a "Mr. Orange by Tapistry Brewing) and quickly walked right to the isle and pointed at the full ones sitting on the shelf. He grudgingly gave me credit for the 4 empty cans I had. When I told him i can find all the other ones that he claims he doesn't sell, he said "No, all I give you is what i already give you!". So, at the time I was so surprised/befuddled/etc..., I simply took my return money and left. Since then, I have wished that I had argued more about it and insisted that they take the returns....however, it was over probably about $3 worth of bottle returns....which also points out the fact that they have lost a customer who spends $200-$300 on beer several times a year, over 3 bucks in bottle returns. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because it is soo crowded with inventory that's its hard to find things and I'm always afraid I'm gonna bump Into a display. Great selection however prices are outrageous. Makes you wonder how long some things have been sitting on the shelf.
