Steven E has never had frozen custard. It is YUM! Today I tasted the chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and the peanut butter brownie. I couldn't pick a winner. All were way too good. It's not all custard. You can also overindulge in a sundae, Italian ice, shakes and malts and these combos called glaciers. Basically, chocolate or vanilla custard blended together with one topping. Quick accurate service on a very hot Friday at lunchtime. This place has a varied frozen custard (soft ice cream) flavors and Italian ice. They also have treats that are mixtures of the custards and the ice (not unlike some Hawaiian frozen desserts you might encounter. Have plenty of parking and some outside tables with umbrellas for s little shade. If you were looking for a place to sit inside, that is not an option. I love frozen custard! I am sharing my opinion. I honestly would give a 3.5, but I round up. I've been here twice with the same experience each time. I love a simple strawberry sundae. The simplicity of vanilla custard pleases my pallet. The first time we went was when only the drive through was open. They did not have tables out, but patrons were still able to park and eat outside. It was nice as there was plenty of space for social distancing. The second time they were fully open and followed guidelines. The service is super quick. Which I think was almost a negative. The girls at the drive thru window weren't rude, but just very short. They take payment, hand you your stuff, then push you away. You don't even get a full thank you or goodbye. My true disappointment is this. Both times we parked to eat. So it was pretty immediate. Both times, my custard was melty. No one likes eating sundae soup. It wasn't quite soup yet, but pretty close. I will return because it's custard and it is tasty. I love custard so I was very excited to see this custard stand. As a first timer I was pleasantly surprised. First of all, they have a drive thru! How cool is that? But I ordered at the counter. They have a lot of parking for those busy summer nights and they have a good number of outdoor tables with umbrellas. Very cool vibe, to say the least. The menu was off the charts. I went with a classic banana but there is something for everyone. They even make cakes here. I have a summer birthday and I know where I'm getting my birthday cake this year! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the service was fast and the food was delicious. What more could you ask for? Okay, so I'm a long-time patron of Ritter's (18 years now) and I stopped going December 2017 because they failed to respond to my complaint. See attached. I sent my message via Instagram and their website and still no response :-(. Needless to say I am extremely disappointed. I have been paying $6 for sundaes and concrete mixers 3-4 times per month, often more cause I even go in the winter, and they can't respond. It has been 6 months since I suspended my patronage. Hours clearly state open till 10 online. When waiting in the drive thru for over 10 minutes the workers rudely stared and didn't even have the courtesy to say they were closed. When I very politely asked "are you guys closed?" I was very rudely responded by a worker, "um ya we've been closed since 9." Happen to stop by this place. This is good custard. Its not the best I've had, but it serves the purpose of getting your custard fix. I ordered the mud fudge. Chocolate custard with crushed oreos whip cream and cherry. I substituted the fudge for caramel which I thought was amazing. There was plenty of caramel just the way I like it! My husband ordered the coffee flavored custard which was very good. My brother couldn't decide and tried a bunch of samples till he figured it out, the staff was very patient with him. The expectation was that I was going to be treated to Ritter's Frozen Custard even if it meant having to go through the drive-thru, but alas, the windows were open! It was a beautiful March day and there was no second thought that custard was not going to be on the menu, even if it was tucked between appetizers and a fancy 5 course dinner. The irony is that Ritter's was founded by a guy from Chicago, but there isn't a Ritter's in the entire state of Illinois! Fortunately for me, a recent visit to south-east Michigan was highlight by a trip to Ritter's Frozen Custard. From the outside, the interior looked sparkling clean and organized. The two servicepersons were friendly, cordial and quick ... though they did get one order wrong by topping a butterscotch sundae with whipped cream and a cherry even though it was requested they be left off. One of us got a vanilla milkshake, one of us got a "Dirt & Worms" sundae and two of us got frozen custard in a cone. I didn't really know what to expect in terms of variety of product, but Ritter's has all of the typical and not-so-typical (read "original") ice cream creations beyond just custard in a cup or a cone. I should imagine this is a hot spot when the weather is warmer and after an afternoon at the nearby Ice House or after some pony league baseball game. The front of the Ritter's hut is punctuated by outdoor seating, set far enough back from the road that you could probably enjoy your frozen custard without inhaling too many fumes, you also have less of a chance of getting a sticky mess in your car. If you're a fan of super premium ice cream, you're likely to be a fan of Ritter's Frozen Custard. Despite the fact that they only offer a few flavors each day, you'll likely find one that sounds appealing and thoroughly enjoy the smooth creamy texture and sweet rich flavor. The only thing I will say is that I would expect, among a choice of 5 flavors, for one to be fruit. I really did go there thinking I was going to have a berry-flavored custard, but there were no fruit or berry options (or mint or spice) which I found a tad off-putting. I won't say that I "settled" for "Chocolate Malt", but I did feel like I was choosing the best from the worst, but that's just me and my tastes. Get thee to Ritter's! We wanted something sweet while out on date night and passing by Ritter's decided to drop in to see what it was all about. My wife ordered a strawberry which sounded really good but i saw a sign for their Italian ice and had to try it. It's an obsession of mine like great General Tso's or really good shawarma. Real Italian ice is hard to find. I'm not sure if anyone reading this would remember Savino's in Livonia but there was none better. Smooth fruity ice served in a thin paper cup that you squeeze from the bottom to eat. I ordered a "Blue Razz" Italian ice. The flavoring name alone left me skeptical but I was hopeful that I found something comparable to my childhood favorite. I came to find out from the cashier that their Italian ice is actually more of a slush. Hell! Anyway, it wasn't terrible. I was bummed that it wasn't an actual Italian ice but it was definitely Blue Razz flavored and it had some good characteristics to it. A little too slushy for what I was looking for but with a little tighter mix the smoothness of it was pretty close. My wife's shake was pretty good but Five Guys is just a little better with a little more strawberry flavor and richer creaminess to it. I have lived in Brighton for my entire life, so I have been to Ritter's quite a few times. It's always been just an average frozen custard place. However, I recently went and had an AWFUL experience. The four girls working were all laughing and chatting (even while taking my order through the drive-thru), so they made me repeat my order three times. Then, I get to the window, and they gave me three cones instead of two like I ordered, and none of them were waffle cones like i specified. When I complained, they just took the extra cone back but claimed there was no way to refund me. So I got over-charged for a completely wrong order. The workers were extremely rude too. They used to be good... when my family and I started coming here, everything was great, 5 stars. Now on the other hand, it is different. I understand that covid is going around, and that the workers are under extra stress because of the risk of getting sick. The first issue is the prices. For a brownie sundae, a "grizzly cub special" (vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, and spanish peanuts), and a vanilla malt that wasn't even full, was over $16.00. I know custard is more expensive to make, but that is a bit much. For our second issue, the workers. Like I said, I know covid is going around, and puts extra stress on them, but there is no reason to be snotty, short, and utterly rude. Was at Ritters last nite. Three of us went thru drive-thru. I ordered a small vanilla glacier with blueberries and salted peanuts. Have had it many times and love it. We drove away to eat elsewhere and found out it had four blueberries and coconut in it. Awful! And they did not return my punch card that had four punches on it. Very disappointed. I love custard. I don't mean I *like* custard. Nope. I *love* custard. Maybe it's because of long time lactose issues and that it's easier in that way, but I prefer to think it's the smooth, rich, happyhappyhappy taste. :) This stop at Ritters is one of the few times in the past several years I have had the opportunity to have custard--and it was worth the trip. We discovered it by accident--I was looking for a place to get a soda and there was the huge sign calling out it's sweet, but powerful message. I immediately turned in. The first impression (other than giddiness at the idea of custard of course) was that this place is *huge* for a 'little' custard shoppe. They have tons of parking, a drive through, several windows, and multiple tables with umbrellas. Despite being mostly uninterested in their surroundings, much less us, the staff did an adequate job of taking our orders and producing melty goodness. I believe 5 flavors were available. My wife selected Cookies and Cream (AMAZING!) and Raspberry Chip in her waffle cone. My boy and I got the same Raspberry Chip and I added some Butter Pecan. It turns out that Butter Pecan translates much better to ice cream than custard, though this was still pretty good. The raspberry chip was good. But the clear stars of the show were the Cookies and Cream (Did I mention AMAZING?), which does much better as a custard than an ice cream (maybe because of the slightly higher tartness levels?) and the fresh, soft waffle cones. It was a welcome dessert surprise and not too far off the highway. We will definitely be back when we're up that way again. read more
