My heart does not usually go pitter patter over fast food. Sadly, Canteen Creemee flew under my radar for the longest time after its 2016 opening, as a result. I was fooled by the burgers, fries, chili, chicken nuggets, and soft serve on the menu (similar to what its mediocre predecessor served at Country Creemee), and thought it was the same standard issue Sysco fare available at every other joint in town. But, my friends, learn from my mistake: Canteen Creemee is so much more than that. It doesn't serve just any old fast food. There is exceptional slow food on the menu that's made with care (if not always complete authenticity). It just happens to be served very quickly after you order it. There's the Straight Outta Bangkok. ($12; Menu description: "Anan traveled from Bangkok to spend his summer with us here at the CCC. So, this green curry is the real deal! Our fried chicken with Anan's coconut green curry served over rice. It's a little Sweet and a little Spicy!!!") Truth be told, I'm not entirely sure this dish is the real deal, lacking as it is in heat, pungency (e.g. from fish sauce), and identifiable vegetable matter. But no matter. Canteen Creemee's version is absolutely delicious, the chicken beautifully fried and beautifully crisp; the jasmine rice fragrant and silky; the sauce redolent with the heady scent of lemongrass. We found it to be a phenomenally good anodyne to a cold winter's day and eight hours of hardcore mogul skiing through a snowstorm. Actually, all of their fried chicken dishes are glorious. We happen to live near Charles' Pan Fried Chicken in NYC, which I would probably rank among the best sources of fried bird in the northeastern US. (I also grew up in the south with exposure to some pretty darn good fried chicken, so I flatter myself to think I have some informed opinions.) Canteen Creemee serves a different style, not quite as crusty, but as ethereally light and crispy and juicy as fried chicken can be. I think it might be every bit as good as Charles -- just in a very different style. Since the beginning, the menu has intrigued with traces of kimchi in interesting places: Kimchi grilled cheese, kimchi tots, and now kimchi stew. Again, if you're an authenticity stickler, you might be disappointed. There isn't quite the funk or heat that you might find in kimchi from the homeland, but those Dirty K-tots ($11.50; "Tahts loaded with our smoked pork, housemade kimchi, spicy mayo, cilantro, scallions.....") are a college kid's wet dream, the perfect food to accompany anything from Natty Light to Citizen Cider. Each component is made with care, the tots beautifully golden and crisp, the smoked pork tender as can be. Cabbage kimchi (made with standard issue green cabbage from I can tell) adds a pleasant touch of acid. I usually despise mayo based sauces, but the spicy mayo that was drizzled on our takeout order in moderation was not objectionable. I guess based on my expectations, I did not love the Jjigae Pork Belly Kimchi Stew ($14.00; "The flavors are clean, healthy and hearty! The spice is nice to warm you from the inside out on a cold winter day. Our house fermented kimchi is the base for this stew. Braised pork belly atop steamed rice with kimchi stew AND a runny side up egg.") Many of the components were nicely prepared, the pork belly tender as could be, the runny yolk a nice touch... And there was even a credible amount of heat in the dish. But we were hoping for something a little more stewy and less ricey, maybe with some tofu added. To be fair, kimchi jigae / chigai is a huge comfort food for me and I guess I'm hidebound about how I want it. It is objectively well made and delicious. There's no dining in, only a take-out counter located next to Mehuron's in Waitsfield's Village Square, with some picnic tables set out in warm weather (e.g. not in Dec, Jan and February when we are usually in the area). Don't be a fool and let this stop you from enjoying some truly interesting, innovative, well made comfort food all year round. read more

What a cool and unique culinary concept in the middle of Waitsfield! I've followed Canteen Creemee on Instagram forever now, and was finally able to visit during a recent trip to Vermont. We actually were so stuffed from the delicious food on the menu that we didn't even order their namesake, a creemee! We ordered the kimchi grilled cheese (on the menu as "Grilled Kim-Cheese) and way too many orders of their fries with asiago and some sort of aioli - I believe it was a lemon aioli? The menu online is just a small version of their actual menu. They had more options on their menu in the store, because I believe they rotate out their options. They also swap out their creemee flavors and had really unique and interesting creemee flavors as well. The kim-cheese was SO good, we got it with cheddar and inhaled it. The fries were also delicious, but our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and we definitely overestimated the amount we needed. We took some home and reheated it as leftovers later in the evening. The line was long the entire time we were there, and never really died down. There's no air conditioning in here, just some fans. As someone traveling from out of town, I forget that this is the norm in Vermont. There was limited seating inside and outside and a lot of people were taking their items to go. The perfect place to stop after swimming nearby at Warren Falls or any of the other local watering holes. Can't wait to come back the next time I visit Vermont! read more

I came for the maple and was not sure how it would work with the chocolate. It was a great combination! The chocolate was so rich that it was like eating ganache. Delicious! I heard and read about their fried chicken. We'd already had dinner, so I made an extra stop the next day for a to go order to have at home. Even not fresh from the fryer, it was still amazing chicken served with sliced pickles, cole slaw, a spicy mayo based sauce and some corn bread. Go to Canteen Creemee on a gorgeous summer evening, order fried chicken, a burger, or something else delicious then go to the grassy area nearby, spread out a picnic blanket and tuck in. This review is coming to you from Philly. I found this place online and knew I wanted to check it out while heading home from Montreal. We also hit up some waterfalls afterward. You can tour Ben & Jerry's beforehand, but don't get your ice cream from there, GET IT FROM HERE!! Absolutely amazing! The staff here KNOW what they're doing. Loved the signs about how it's worth the wait. They even post wait times for food and creemees on a chalkboard by the cash register. Wait for your creemee by the window. As for the food, they'll give you a beeper and it will go off when your order is ready. Those they aren't licensed for indoor seating, there is an indoor seating option next door. There are also a few round picnic tables on the side of the building and standing bar counters. They even have a water station. Let me tell you about the Bahn Mi Fried Chicken Sandwich. You have to HEAR the crunch as I take a bite in my video. Trying the Bahn Mi Fried Chicken Sammie. 9/10 easy. The flavor profile is incredibly crafted. Seasoned extremely well! Garlic Aoili, cucumbers, pickled peppers, carrots, cilantro. The chicken has a wonderful crisp and juicy and tender on the inside. The bread was perfect, great crunch on the outside while still fluffy but toasted on the inside. I'm a tough critic, but this was one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I've ever had. The twist available this day was Thai Tea and Maple. However, they easily accommodated my request of maple and chocolate which you can see in the photo. The Creemee is 100% worth the hype. The chocolate was rich and melted in my mouth. The maple was elegant. The flavors together were epic. I wish I got some fried chicken to go. Do not pass on this place, it's the real deal. I had lunch on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered at the counter (only option) and got a buff(alo) chicken sandwich and small fries. The wait was ok and they give you a buzzer to let you know when you're order is ready. There's not a lot of indoor seating, and there's not much atmosphere going on, unless you count the sticky notes on the walls praising the creemees (and other things). The sandwich had the biggest piece of chicken I've seen on a sandwich, along with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Some slices of pickles on the side. Fries were an overflowing cup, enough for two people. The sandwich was a little messy (usually an ok thing with me) and I used many napkins. For desert, I had to have a maple creemee. Very Good. Took long to come out of the pick up window and fries, onion rings, fish sandwich were over fried to the point of approaching in a few minutes more being burned. Plus they piled our onion rings so high that the bag fell over into the parking lot, had to throw out half of the bag, wasting money! Would go back for the ice cream, not so much the food, sorry! I've gotten takeout from here a few times when I am in the area. They usually offer pretty interesting menu items so it's always worth a try. My last visit I heard along the grapevines that they were serving Pho. It was a terribly cold weekend so Pho sounded like a great idea. Although it was going out of my way, I made it a point to visit. When I got there I scoped out the menu trying to locate the Pho. I didn't see it advertised but I did notice a common misspelling of the word "Banh" which means bread. I walked up to the counter and inquired about the Pho. They told me that they indeed had it so I went ahead and ordered. While it was up there I casually mentioned that their spelling (bahn) was wrong. The guy taking our order looked like he could not be bothered. Then he responded "yeah we know, it's an easy mistake". As a Vietnamese-American, I love when places offer nods to my culture. But alongside that, correctly spelling the item you are trying to pay homage to is equally important. It's not the misspelling that is offensive to me, it's the attitude given to someone who educating you is offensive. i went here around 6:30 on a sunday evening and it was pretty packed. they said it would be around 35 mins for food but it was actually around 20. the ordering and pickup system was very streamlined. cute interior, we chose to eat outside. i got the bahn mi (fried chicken). it was very good. i usually don't like a ton of sauce on my sandwich, but the flavor blend in this was so good that i didn't mind it. all the ingredients tasted fresh and everything was well seasoned. i ended with a blueberry creemee (not pictured) which had flecks of blueberry in it and was delicious. my date got the fish and chips which he said tasted good but wasn't authentic (he's british) because it wasn't served with steak fries. personally, i'm not the biggest fan of steak fries so i liked the way they do it here better. he got a maple creemee (gotta teach the non-locals our way of life) and said it was "the best f**king thing he's ever tasted". pretty high praise. highly recommend, but if you want to get food maybe don't come any later than 7:15. read more

YUMMY CREEMEE!!! There's something about the soft serve ice cream, aka creemees, in the New England states. It's similar to shave ice in Hawaii, things just don't compare. You can imitate, but rarely duplicate. I do love me some ice cream, and our family indulges in it any chance we get, everywhere we go, so we've definitely had our share of frozen treats. As a California lad, I wasn't ready for the deliciousness of New England ice cream, let alone creemees, but I know now, that's for sure! Small here, is comparable to a large size in California! We win either way! She needed help finishing her order, so I gladly assisted! Coconut flavor was spot on! That Thai Tea flavor though, was a little off. Not really the complex sweet Thai Tea flavor we are use to in California Thai restaurants. No synergy with this twist imho, although theoretically it should've been better than mine. At least not on today's visit. But, still tasty enough to gladly finish ;) VERY EASY RECOMMENDATION! For good reason, Canteen Creemee is on quite a few "Best Of" lists for ice cream in New England. I was HELLA impressed with my creemee, for sure! Also, the small size is very generous. Medium is way too much, at least for one person. We also got normal food. We got the fried chicken banh mi, which was exceptional. The corn dog was meh. Wouldn't order that again. There was too much batter; the dog was too salty; and it wasn't fried crispy enough. Second chances, eh? I visited Canteen a few years back and had an unfortunate experience. Stopped by again today and was pleasantly surprised. The service was good and the food was excellent. I had the Banh Mi and the pork dumplings. Both dishes were perfect! Highly recommended. Finished off with the maple "affogato" which was also good. The wait was reasonable, too. I was excited for their food, so much so that I drove 46 minutes from Burlington and waited over an hour for my order. I read so much about their "killer" fried chicken. My 3 piece came with cole slaw and corn bread pudding. The fried chicken was ok. The breading was too thick and fell away from the chicken leaving just thick pieces of meh chicken. The accompanying cole slaw literally had no flavor. The corn bread pudding was the only decent part of the meal. I also ordered the hot chocolate that was topped with chocolate mousse, mini marshmallows and colored sprinkles. It wonderful to look at but just tasted of sugar overload. The Canteen is so good that you've got to place your order early - like middle of the afternoon early - for an evening pick-up on Friday or Saturday nights before they sell out and stop taking orders. They make an amazing fried chicken. We ordered the chicken sandwich, with a sesame bun that was perfectly toasted and a substantial amount of chicken. It came with dilly beans for a side - that's the Canteen touch to a tee. My fried chicken caesar salad was huge, with homemade croutons and agan, a substantial amount of chicken. You are not going to go wrong with anything that you order here, only in waiting to eat it once you are home and it has gotten cold. We are tremendously fortunate to have a joint like this in the Valley. To say nothing of their epic and infamous creemees. Don't take it for granted! read more

The partner and I shared a memorable lunch with the two piece chicken meal, the Cluckster chicken sandwich and a small order of fries. I've lived south of the Mason Dixon line for 6+ years, so I've had some chicken and am careful about setting my own expectation when it comes to New England takes on southern comfort food. However, every single thing we tried was pleasantly, charmingly better than I expected, really quite delicious. The chicken is on the salty side, for those of you with salt sensitivity. (Though if you don't do salty, maybe fried chicken isn't the way to go). The 2 piece chicken meal came with corn pudding (kind of a super moist cornbread) and a coleslaw. Both were small but satisfying and paired well with the chicken. The staff had a nice and causal energy about them, fresh faced, kind and accommodating. There isn't a ton of seating--looked like their indoor seating area was undergoing some construction-- and the music was on the loud side (though props to the place for playing actual records on an actual record player, a hipster touch I don't know that I've ever seen in a dinning establishment). Next time I go, I'll grab my chicken to go and head to the Waitsfield covered bridge area to eat it. But I'll be definitely back. read more
