This was a mixed experience. We had terrific service. The ambience was really perfect for a beachy dive bar type place. Chips, salsa & queso were good. The food was lackluster. The fried fish tacos were very very fishy, & the grilled fish dinner was full of bones. Everyone else said the food was ok. The sangria was also ok. Not the best, but good enough. The table chips are (most likely from a bag and pretty plain) the pico was very good. ...an extra $3 for chicken tamale is trash Service was mainly a miss, things began okay but when there are more employees than patrons the server should easily be prompt for all parts of service; including checking on drinks, checking on how things are if more of anything is needed, observing when it is appropriate to bring the check. So Joanna (waitserver), 10% may not seem like much of a tip but you had not even kept basics of earning the 20% let alone more than that. We will probably try this Captiva Cantina next visit, but driving 20 extra minutes to go to Rosalleta's may just be better. read more

Staying on Captiva Island and gave these folks a try. The venue has dollar bills plastered all around kind like the Salty Dawg Saloon in Homer Spit Alaska. Seemed out of place for a restaurant. Immediately, the server seemed rather disinterested in our business. No welcome or any other pleasantries, just a "What do you want to drink?" Placed our orders - a wet burrito and chicken quesadillas. When the food was delivered, the server dropped off the plates and pretty much disappeared. My burrito was not a wet burrito and I would have liked some hot sauce. After the meal was half gone, the server reappeared and I asked for some hot sauce but before I could ask about the burrito not being as ordered he was gone. He did drop off the hot sauce, which was very good however the burrito itself was very plain. When we got the bill, the bill had the correct order so the kitchen messed up the order and the server certainly did not check. I paid the check but paid a minimal tip. I could understand slow service if the restaurant was busy, but it was not. read more

For starters we ordered their Queso and guacamole dip. The homemade chips were fresh and warm. I chose "The Original" Burrito for my entree. This consists of a 13 inch flour tortilla filled with rice, beans, cheese, and for my choice of meat - I went with steak ($16.00). I also ordered it "wet" (covered in Queso Blanco and enchilada sauce). I ordered a Margarita, on the rocks, salt on the rim (TYVM), for my drink. Barely finished with the Queso and dip, entrees arrived. My burrito was huge and they did not spare on the fillings. It was literally stuffed with steak, beans, and rice. The blanco cheese and enchilada sauce made for the perfect covering. It was delicious!! My Margarita was very good with just the right amount of ice and salt (ok, you can never have too much salt, ha!). Service was friendly, courteous, and efficient. He checked back a couple of times to make sure everything was fine. Interestingly, this place has dollar bills stapled to the walls, doors, ceilings, beams, just about everywhere. So make sure you sign your dollar bill and staple it to their wall so as to let everyone know you were here. And speaking of "here", being how it's located at the end of Captivate Island, enjoy your ride to and from . It's a very scenic ride along some beautiful beaches and picturesque Gulf waters. Cute little restaurant and very friendly staff. Food comes out really quick (almost too quick lol). The salsa was not my cup of tea. Basically large slices of tomatoes and some onion with some sort of liquid underneath. Seemed a lot like chunky pico. Guacamole was alright. Chips were good. The pork enchiladas were fine. Tonight was our first Cantina Captiva experience. We ordered queso ($10) as an appetizer, and entrees were chicken & beef fajitas ($22), 3 cheese enchiladas ($13), and 1 beef taco with rice and beans ($7) and 1 tamale ($4). The Queso was typical white queso and was tasty. The chicken and beef fajitas were tasty and served with grilled onions and reg and green bell pepper. The 3 cheese enchiladas had good flavor but they make them "gringo" style using flour tortillas which was not what I was expecting and it stopped me from loving the entree. Each entree was served with yellow rice and black beans and they were tasty. They bring chips and pico de gallo to the table. The pico is not petite cut and the flavor was ok. The dining room is pretty small and warm, even though we were seated by the air conditioner. They also offer outside seating at picnic tables with umbrellas. The food overall was tasty and worth returning if we are interested in having Mexican food. I will either request that they make my enchiladas with corn tortillas as they are supposed to be prepared with or I will choose something else from the menu. read more

They have a few parking spots in front and a larger lot on the side. Outdoor seating is available. They have a bar and a dining room covered in customer signed/added dollar bills. Horrible experience - disappointing food, ambiance & service. The ratings are misleading. The decor is awful with dollar bills all over. It feels claustrophobic, like a dungeon. However, the food is my #1 complaint. The guac did NOT taste fresh, had that slight tang taste like it was a day too old. The chips were a little stale, but not too bad. Salsa was lack-luster. I got the beef tacos, which we not great, but edible. The meat tasted processed and the flavor just wasn't great. My husband had the Chile Relleno, which did not have good flavor, he said "it was not too" and he really doesn't complain. My mom had shrimp tacos, literally took 2 bites and didn't eat the rest. She said it was gross. We ordered a pitcher of margarita, which tasted like the processed crap you could get at Walmart. The waiter seemed annoyed about life and we occasionally had to waive him over to ask for water or the check. I also had GI upset (nothing horrible but bloated etc.) for about 3 days after and STILL don't feel normal 1 week later. Was the meat fresh??! I will never go back. I honestly don't wish for any business to have a review like this but they need to get it together. I hope they redecorate, get a new manager and new head chef, because Captiva & it's visitors deserve better. read more

This restaurant was amazing! We went to the restaurant at about 7:15 pm and started with the most amazing chips and queso , guac, and pico de Gallo! The service was amazing and our server was very polite and gave us very good recommendations. I recommend the original burrito with queso Blanco as well as the veggie fajitas, Chile rellenos, and the Mexico City tacos. In addition, the outdoor area is great to sit at even when it is a little chilly! Overall great experience at this restaurant and no hesitation to give them 5 stars :) read more

This place is a little different. It floated between authenticity and wannabe. We were seated at the entrance even though the restaurant was virtually empty so we changed the table. The Margarita was horrible. The only part of the meal that was good was the sautéed shrimp sauce. The service was not good as the server constantly glared and stared like he wanted to hurt someone. Do you love visiting islands or being on the beach but can't eat seafood? Same. Please read this review from that POV. I have been ordering off the kids menus the entire week while on Captiva. It hasn't been terrible but there's only so many cheeseburgers and butter noodles I could handle. We ended up at Cantina Captiva and I was hesitant. I'm first Gen, I'm from Austin- my Mexican food standards are HIGH. First off, the margaritas on the rocks are very strong. I'm not a fan of the drinks that taste like pure alcohol but if you like a stiff drink I definitely recommend them. I ordered the steak fajitas. They were excellent! I wasn't a fan of the yellow rice. I love Mexican rice and this was much more Spanish influenced I think. The refried beans were black beans and that also threw me off a little bit. Overall the food was much better than I anticipated and it was probably my favorite meal I had at a restaurant on the island. The ambiance felt very "hole in the wall" hidden gem. They let you decorate dollar bills and staple them anywhere inside and out on the restaurant and our server said they donate it to a charity at the end of the year. read more

The margs were very yummy, and Saul provided us with jalapeños to make them spicy. Everything tasted super fresh and delicious. A newer addition to the island, that often gets overlooked by the staple restaurants, Cantina Captiva was a welcome addition for our longer visits to South Seas Island Resort. While Florida is not known for their Mexican restaurant, I give credit to Cantina Captiva for their homemade guacamole and attempts and queso and salsa. I actually like the queso flavor, it's just a little runny; I would have rather enjoyed salsa than the pico de gallo. The tequila lime shrimp pleased the pickiest eater of the group, which means it must be good! I'd definitely recommend that. I had grilled steak tacos, which I found to be a little bland. I recommend ordering a side of sour cream, guacamole, pico, something, to make it a little tastier. The steak was cooked to perfection though, which I find even the nicest of establishments tend to over cook their steak. Service was unbelievably fast, but moderate in attention to details, as some people got the wrong orders and some sides were forgotten. The decor on the restaurant is covered in dollar bills. It's fun to look at, but doesn't give the cleanest appearance. It's also extremely dark inside. I'd recommend sitting out on the patio if it's nice out and not buggy.
