Typical Mexican location with slightly above average food. The outside patio with heaters was perfect for our dinner. The service was very friendly and helpful. Only a few simple mistakes with our orders and they were quickly fixed and apologized for. We had zero wait time on New Year's Eve which was perfect since this was our third attempt at finding a restaurant. The Mexican city enchiladas were tasty and the burritos were very good as well. A fun little place to grab a bite. Definitely recommend the seafood fajita!! It was the best out of all of our meals. The rest of the food was good but those definitely stood out. This was a fantastic experience across the board. We started by walking in to a very cute establishment covered with walls of dollar bills; very cool never seen this before! You know this a truly Mexican culture when you're greeted by homemade chips and salsa. After that, we enjoyed the finest chips and salsa I've had in a long day. For entrees, the fajitas were flowing at our table and boy was it good. We also enjoyed a nice quesadilla, fantastic I just say, along with a taco salad that was Devine. There was no wait to be seated, however, they seemed to be understaffed so it took a little bit to get drinks and go ahead and order (only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5). This is a popular Mexican restaurant because it is the only Mexican restaurant. if I had another option I would rather go there. I am not at all impressed with the service. No waiter was happy.. just having a look at it kitchen was not clean, no one was covering their hair while working in there. Our waiter in particular was additionally grumpy and rude. I did not even get a high chair for my kid. My hungry Child had to wait for the food till everyone got their drinks and their food got served. Well worth the drive to Captiva! My Texas born husband is hard to please when it comes to the Mexican cuisine! I can't blame him because Texas knows how to cook up some serious yummy Mexican flavor. With that being said we are always on the hunt for new spots to impress us. This cute cantina did not disappoint. Inside and outdoor seating is available. (With designated parking, a plus on tiny Captiva) We started with house made salsa and guacamole. Crunchy fresh tortilla chips with chunky yummy pico de gallo style salsa. The guacamole was great as well, watch out for the tiny bits of fresh jalapenos! Don't forget to grab a house margarita! I went for the fajitas style chicken salad with a side of black beans. The salad was good, presentation was ehh but taste did not disappoint! The black beans were my favs! Hubs got the surf and turf burrito ( steak and shrimp). It's a two handed delight. Many options on the burrito front as far as fillers and you decide wet or dry. He was happy with his choice. Over all we'd definitely return! Only negatives were waiting for our check and it was rather warm inside! But it's July in South Florida, the heat is on! read more

Cantina Captiva is incredible! From the minute you walk in, you see thousands of dollar bills covering the entire restaurant. There are markers and staplers for your convenience, as well. (Don't forget to add your own dollar bill!) The food was great and we had super quick service during lunch time. The flank steak and chicken enchiladas were amazing. It takes a lot for me to give a bad review. I gave an extra star because the menu proudly says that their beans and rice are vegetarian and that they had a veggie section on the menu. We drove over from Sanibel to get what I was craving: Mexican food. We had to request chips and salsa, and I did like the salsa but it was very spicy. I don't think most people in the US can handle that spice.What a let down! I got the veggie burrito with no cheese or sour cream to make it vegan. There was nothing good about it. No seasonings (that I could taste) and it came with a 'house salad' which was a little lettuce, 2 slices of cucumber and onions. I also ordered the sangria, which tasted like watered down wine. My family was also disappointed in their food. My husband ordered a margarita and it also tasted watery. We eventually requested more chips because the portions were on the smaller side and we were still hungry, but the chips never came. It was such a bummer! read more

We recommend the Mexican City Tacos and fried Plantains. If you like Sangria, go with the 1/2 pitcher! We thought it was the whole island that just gave awful service, until we finally went to a restraunt not owned by this owner....it's not the islandbits just these select few restraunts. It took over 30 minutes just to get a water, chips and have our waiter take our order to which he finally told us they were out of tamales (main reason we all came). After 2 hours our food finally arrived, we were hot, eaten by bugs and had trouble finding parking on a week day with all the other businesses around. My tacos weren't much better than something I could order from Taco Bell and my strawberry margarita was probably the worst one I've ever drank. Our hispanic waiter also came off a bit rude and he kinda acted as if it was his first day doing this or something, we had to ask him to clear our chip baskets, etc so we would have a place for our dinner plates (you should never go back to the kitchen empty handed as a waiter) when it arrived and we asked numerous times for more silverware brought out until he finally did and even asked for separate checks which I guess he couldn't remember until it was time for us to pay the bill. Not sure the place was understaffed when we first showed up but there were several other employees working by the time we left. I don't think we'll be back to eat here again anytime soon. read more

This is such a fun spot! Staff has always been very friendly and attentive. The food portions are more than enough - trust me, you'll have leftovers! Their salsa is made fresh in the restaurant; it's certainly one of my favorites! I'd definitely recommend any of the nacho plates (chicken and shrimp are both fantastic), and the enchiladas are great as well! The quesadillas are massive, but I wouldn't recommend if you prefer more meat than cheese - cheese lovers, this one's for you. Deducted a star because the restaurant isn't the cleanest, and they weren't placing a super big emphasis on social distancing. We were excited to eat here because we love Mexican food. The service was well below subpar which made our dining experience negative. Our server was noticeably unhappy throughout our entire meal. He asked us if we were ready to order. We said we were. He stated, "I'll be back in a few minutes". He disappeared then came out a few minutes later and began cleaning the table next to us. Then he disappeared again. Our water glasses remained empty until we finally asked for more. We never got a refill on my granddaughter's sprite. The food was decent but steer clear of the kids meal corn dog. Also there was a sewer-like smell wafting by our table the entire meal. The Mahi Mahi and the tequila lime shrimp were good. Cons- We ordered a pitcher of mango margarita and only got 4 glasses for what the menu advertised as serving 5-6 glasses. The Captiva Shrimp Wraps were good but didn't really seem like that much food compared to how they were advertised on the menu. The tamales in the tamales entree plate were dry. Most of the food the group ordered was underseasoned, and our rice and beans were cold for all the dishes we ordered. Unfortunately, our waitress was rushing through getting our order for the time we were there and seemed kind of cold. It was definitely off putting and we would have been willing to get more drinks but decided instead to leave because it didn't seem worth it. read more

I'm only giving this place a star because they were open when not much else was. Got chicken enchiladas, my husband got carnitas enchiladas and our boys both got burritos with fries. We all left hungry still because we couldn't finish our meals. My chicken had no flavor and both enchilada plates was seriously lacking enchilada sauce. My normally ravenous son took one bite of his burrito and said he was done. The place is covered in dollar bills which may have been cute in the past but all I kept thinking was how dirty they all were. The quesadilla was bland and tasteless even with the carnitas. The Chile relleno was served with ground beef in it. Very untraditional. Interesting twist but missed. The black beans were good. Rice with little flavor. In Florida, with all the Spanish influence, they should be able to produce a much higher quality food. Try using fresh ingredients next time. Sorry. Hmmm. Waiter was nice and honest. Margaritas are made with agave wine and not tequila, but you do not know that until you take a sip and it tastes like a juice drink. The chips were not and fresh and the guacamole would have been good except that it seemed like they just poured salsa in it which made it watery. Overall quesadillas and lettuce wraps were fresh and tasty. Still not over that agave wine margarita surprise. read more
