Came here for lunch. Driving and parking is fine in the day. As others mentioned its not a good area to walk around. Inside I enjoyed the decor and vibe. Staff very friendly. Good: old fashioned, tri-mix of guac (liked the truffle one), steak tacos. Not so good:coco tartare app, I thought most of the other tacos were tried were very okay for the price and would not recommend (shrimp, pastor (one of my least favorite versions of pastor), one with habaenro (not spicy at all). Would have enjoyed some actual spicy salsa to go with it. Overall, I sadly can't really recommend it. read more

I can't believe I am giving Cantina La Martina a ONE star review! I couldn't even muster a 2 given what they gave me to eat tonight. I ordered the carnitas tacos and churros. The meat in the tacos was so dry that it was hard to chew and swallow. Some of the pieces were cooked to a crisp. No amount of salsa could make them better. I'm sorry I didn't take photos of the tacos, but trust me me I get no pleasure from leaving a bad review for this place; I am not lying or exaggerating. I thought they were going to be one of our local gems. I choked down a half a taco, gave the rest to my husband and he couldn't eat them either. The churros actually had raw batter in the middle and the outside was rubbery and hard at the same time. You could barely bite through it. I'm a cook and I know that that is about keeping the oil at an even temperature to get the inside done and not overcook the outside. Someone in the kitchen did not know what they were doing. Cantina is a restaurant in a refurbished bar. It still feels like the old corner bar. Lighting is subdued but you can still see the menu. Booths and bar seating is available as well as a patio on weekends. It is located in a sketchy area but a police car is stationed on the corner. I felt as safe as I do in other areas of Philly. Street parking is available within a few feet. The cocktails were very good with many different kinds of margs and other drinks. Beer and wine are also available. We were greeted as soon s we walked in by both the bartender and one of the owners. Our server brought water as soon as we sat down. She was attentive and helpful with explanations. The food here is authentic! Several different kinds of guacamole are available. We chose the one with pomegranate. It added a nice crunch and flavor. One with grasshopper was available. lol that was a no for me! The trio of empanadas were delicious. We shared a carnitas taco platter and branzino platter. The tacos were tasty. It's isn't in a great area but once you enter it is completely different being clean on the inside and you feel like you are transported to Mexico. Serving very traditional Mexican food and you won't find your traditional Americanized dishes. The food is excellent and the drinks are great too. I've been to Mexico twice and lived in CA for over eight years. I never expected to find the best Mexican food of my life in Kensington, Philly lol. But my goodness, I'm so glad I did! I was skeptical given the location, but as soon as we walked into the warm, welcoming, smallish restaurant, we were asked if we had a reservation (we did not), but luckily there was bar seating available. Every other table was just about filled, and for good reason! We asked the bartender what she'd recommend and she suggested the entrees. "Everything is amazing, but the entrees are phenomenal" (something along those lines). She wasn't wrong. I ordered the cochinitas tacos and my husband got the entree, the bistec sinaloense, and while the tacos were so effin good (best in Philly, hands down), the bistec blew us away. I especially loved the nopales salad. Often, nopales is mushy and slimy, but the nopales salad had a fresh crunch and delicate citrus flavor that I absolutely loved. The strips of medium steak were a bit chewy for a taco, but the flavor of it was unspeakably good. Same with the thin fingerling potato slices and the cauliflower. Even the tortillas. All of it made our tastebuds sing. The trio of guacamoles was a great way to start. Awesome base guac topped three ways: crab meat, goat cheese and pistachio, and crickets with mango salsa. All were delicious, even down to the freshly fried chips. The level of care with which each dish was prepared cannot be overstated. Every single morsel tasted deliberately crafted. It's not cheap, but a thousand percent worth it if you're looking for a great, possibly memorable meal. Excited to go back and try more! read more

Hear me out, the area isn't great, but once you walk inside the restaurant- everything changes! The place is very clean, decorated nicely and has a good vibe to it. The food itself is consistently delicious! It's actually our new favorite spot. When I ate in, the service was great. No issues. Also ordered for delivery and had no issues with the food quality- it was packaged well. I would recommend ubering if you aren't from the area and want to visit. Most times there is parking, but some people may not feel comfortable leaving their car or even walking a few blocks over. I would def recommend giving it a try! read more

Definitely a great taco spot. Got the carnitas tacos and my first take was that the portion was generous and the flavors were really fresh. My order did take a little time to prepare, and there was some gristle in the meat, but that would not prevent me from returning. Unfortunately the neighborhood is definitely sketch, no doubt about that. If possible don't drive because there as the locals don't seem to drive well. Rain was spritzing on and off for the better part of the day - we were happy to be covered! * Guacamole and house made chips - can't go wrong. * Equites - seasonal corn in queso fresco with a smattering of mayo. * Queso Fundido - ooey, gooey cheesy goodness. Mild flavor and super stringy. It was indeed "FUN"dido! * Ceviche De Coco - I tend to shy away dishes made with coconut milk, but this was silky and amazing. * Black truffle ravioli - the creamy garlic sauce was wonderful. * Chamorro - so tender...fall-off-the-bone delicious. The little masa dumplings were great! * Mar Y Tierra Oaxaqueno (bone marrow, steak and shrimp) - this was garnished with crickets (chapulines). My better half was horrified that the rest of us "ate insects" but the crickets were crispy and nutty in flavor. His loss! The steak was rather gristly and tough, though. This was our least favorite item. Our server was so sweet and very knowledgeable of the menu. You can tell she tried everything at least once. We ate and drank like champs and our bill was very reasonable. Cantina La Martina is located in Kensington. This is NOT a location where you'll take an after-dinner neighborhood stroll. The aguachile de macha is a Hall of Fame dish for me -- incredible salsa macha, perfect shrimp, and small chips and an avocado on top to round it out. Cantina Martina has brunch Saturday & Sunday till 4 pm. The service was excellent. I had a more traditional American breakfast w pancakes, whipped cream and berries and an over easy egg. The pancakes were delicious and very fluffy. The Mexican coffee is not super strong and is pre made w cinnamon & sugar. There are a lot of Mexican brunch choices that look delicious. I think you really can't go wrong here with any food. The drink menu is also spectacular. It is on the main drag in Kensington but we usually find close parking and never have any issues. All the windows in the restaurant are glass cinder block. The food and drinks are worth the trip. read more

Cantina La Martina's Chef Dionicio Jiménez and team continue to do a fantastic job bringing authentic Xochitl-style Mexican food and terrific service to Kensington. Our table of 6 devoured everything we were brought. With 5 repeat guests and 1 newbie, we had some repeat orders, e.g., the Guacamole Especial de la Casa (mixed herbs, pomegranate seeds), my review of which has not changed: I could've eaten a bucketful! We meant to repeat order the Esquites (corn, queso fresco, mayo, tajin), but ordered Elote (grilled corn on the cob, chipotle mayo, queso fresco), which was fantastic, so we had to add an order of the Esquites. Oh darn, more tasty corn! We also did a repeat order of the Refried Beans. Some new-to-us dishes included: - Señor Machete (24" quesadilla, which we got with an off-menu pork)--a favorite of the table - Trio Tamales (1. cochinita, salsa habanero lemongrass, pickled onions, 2. chicken tinga, mole poblano, crema and sesame seeds, 3. zucchini blossom, requeson, arugula) - Camarones a la Macha (prawn shrimp sautéed in salsa macha, served with a side of rice and salad)--another favorite of the table - Ramen pozole (ramen noodles, pozole rojo, boiled egg, lettuce, cabbage, corn nuts, queso, crema, radishes), which definitely had linguine, not ramen noodles, and needed the kick of the cut limes - Chepilin Fetuccini (chepilin pasta in a rabbit sauce, garnished with parmesan cheese), another favorite of the table - Molcajete (grilled chicken, chorizo, New York Strip, chicharron, nopales, scallions, queso fresco, molcajete sauce. Served with a side of warm tortillas) And this time, a few had saved room for the churros! We also introduced the michelada to at least 1 diner, who loved it, indulged in a margarita tower, and got a tour of the fire pits for the 8-hour roast goat for Cinco de Mayo--sadly we had plans so couldn't do a back-to-backer. Exactly what authentic Mexican food tastes like. While Cantina La Martina isn't in the best neighborhood (so do consider how you're going to dine with them), dining with Chef Dionicio Jiménez is a treat. Also considering he's been a star pupil of Vetri, Starr, and CookNSolo, he knows what he's doing. Being that I've tried to find an authentic Mexican restaurant anywhere in the Philadelphia area, trying his Xochitl style food was amazing. Note - go to their happy hour (5-7pm)! It's amazing. The margaritas big, the ribs absolutely delicious, and the chicken wings large and in charge (they're $2 and you'll see why). The sauce the wings and ribs were in was smokey yet spicy and balanced in all the right ways. For dinner, we got the Mis 3 Amores (three chicken drumsticks in three types of mole sauce) and the Chamorro (HUGE braised pork shank with masa dumplings and a great sauce). To end, our waitress recommended the churros and we're so happy we didn't pass those up. First of all, get over the location, or let it inspire you to kindness and generosity. Write a check to an organization that works to help the people in Kensington if it bothers you. And nobody from the neighborhood will accost you. My son's girlfriend threw him a birthday party there, with everything cooked or smoked on their backyard patio. It was sublime. The place is decorated in a really cool way that reminds me of my favorite NYC Mexican cantina that sadly closed forever during covid. I'm sure everyone who visits hates the location. It like having dinner on the set of the walking dead. I would not recommend making reservations after 7pm. However areas will not improve if they are neglected. Came here with high expectations but left disappointed unfortunately. We got the chips and salsa, tortilla soup, elote, bistec (NY strip steak), and chamorro (pork shank). The salsa, soup, and elote were all good, nothing amazing. The steak was overcooked and dry, and the composition of the dish was a little confusing with two different salads/slaws, fried cauliflower, and potato chips. The pork shank was cooked well, it was very tender and juicy but unfortunately was pretty flavorless. The sauce on it was just lacking any salt or flavor, and the dish was supposed to come with zucchini flowers but they swapped them for tater tots which was odd. For the higher price point, we were expecting a much better meal. Won't be back unless it's for happy hour, which did include 1/2 off margaritas which were probably the highlight of the meal. The horchata was fantastic. I asked for the shrimp empanadas even though it wasn't on the dinner menu and the kitchen accommodated. Shrimp empanadas came with rice and beans. I ordered a side of plantains which I have nothing but good things to say about it. Aguachile De Coco came with chips and was beautifully plated. The decor is festive, I overheard the person sitting behind me say it was like a scene out of Encanto. This took me a while to get a review together, given all the positive press and accolades it has received since opening up...it felt wrong to give them a lower than average score. That said, I am going to stick to my guns, but will provide thoughtful and clear points from our experience. Also worth noting, a 3 star review is not a reason for you never visit this location, but more a point to proceed with caution. First, let's talk about the neighborhood. While this doesn't directly impact the quality of food or service per-say, it does impact the overall experience. In this instance, it is crucial, because it is the first impression. If you are questioning whether or not this could actually be in the heart of Kensington, let me assure you, it most definitely is. For what it's worth, my wife and I live 5 minutes from this spot, but seeing how the drug epidemic has taken over this neighborhood, it is just tough to immediately park your car, and see all the homeless people on the street and people under the influence right on the same block. Candidly, we were taken back and felt uneasy walking into the restaurant, but eventually settled in. You are greeted by their nice wait staff and classic Mexican music blasting on the radio. My hope is that this restaurant can become more and more of a light for this section of Kensington. We sat outside because no seats were available indoors, which was cool to see both sides. However - no thrills or frills outside from an aesthetic standpoint. Outside, you essentially had a front row to the kitchen. The food was good...just good. Am I going to recommend folks come from anywhere in the city to check this? Probably not. I will say though - the authenticity & variety of dishes on this menu really stands out. You likely can't find their entrees in most neighborhood Mexican restaurants. I didn't try a margarita myself, but it does seem like they are a crowd favorite. The guacamole appetizer and churro dessert definitely stood our respectively. We had a number of tacos, which weren't necessarily memorable, and an entree called: molcajete. This was served in a hot molcajete bowl, and had a side of warm tortillas to eat the meat with. It was filled with grilled chicken, chorizo, New York Strip, chicharron, nopales, scallions, queso fresco, molcajete sauce. I would probably try more of their tacos before having this again, but it is a heaping pile of meat and I was able to use as leftovers and make tacos at home which I really enjoyed. An unfortunate slip up from our visit was with the service. My wife ordered vegetarian tacos, and when the waitress brought out our dishes, she handed my wife the pork tacos. I will say, with all the yummy toppings on these tacos, they can certainly be hard to distinguish at face value, but that just underscores why the service team should have a system in place. Generally speaking, our waitress was nice, but did not offer much help with navigating the menu. Again - the tacos were standard. Did they leave the impression on me, that this is where I have to get tacos from now on...no. I'm sorry to say that this place did not live up to the hype. Everyone said ignore the location, the food is worth it. Whole-heartly, I can not say that and the location is really terrible. We had to sit at the bar because the rest of the restaurant was reserved - understandable for a Friday night in a small place. My husband and I ordered margaritas, which were probably the best part. They have a few flavors and come in fun wide glasses. We ordered the giant veggie quesadilla that can be shared between two people and opted for the mango salsa. I had also ordered a side of elote - but unfortunately, that never came. I don't think the bartender heard me but I was a little annoyed at their mistake. The quesadilla was extremely underwhelming for $35 dollars. Literally could have gotten something of equal taste at Wawa. Very upsetting. I pointed out to the bartender that we never got the elote and since we had finished the quesadilla we opted to just get tres leches. It was okay but nothing to write home about or risk going to Kensington for. Maybe because I am vegetarian and couldn't eat their meat dishes, I left upset. I wouldn't recommend this place. You have to try the horchata!! I came here with a friend for lunch on Friday and it was absolutely delicious, I can not wait to try for dinner another time! I got the horchata and we shared an order of plantains as an app (even though they are listed as a side), delicious and crispy yet soft at the same time. I got the chicken tacos and she got the shrimp enchiladas, her green creamy sauce was so tasty, and the chicken tacos were really flavorful. The chicken was marinated and they had cabbage for a little crunch and avocado so the flavors blended together really well. Highly recommend it, people were coming in for happy hour as we were leaving which also sounds amazing! We were so hungry and excited to eat I forgot to snap a pic before we dug in. Its very cute and the server was friendly but if you are checking it out be aware of your surroundings when you park/ get out of your uber/ the subway. If you do drive make sure you dont have anything visible in your car someone could grab. We went here last night after discovering that Juana Tamale on Passyunk was closed ( I had been looking forward to going here all week so still upset about this) I wanted to go to a place high on my "list" which consists of places that Craig LeBan reviews, best restaurants of Philadelphia Mag or Best of the ML mag and I study these reviews like I am preparing for the LSAT (or sometimes reviews from you lovely folks) It was an extremely outstanding meal but there were some definite lows about the experience that had nothing to do with the food or service. The chef here had received accolades as one of the best chefs in the city preparing Mexican food in novel, adventurous and maybe contemporary or experimental ways ( it's not a place to just get your standard burrito ). We had the "Festival de los moles" with 5 different kinds with an EXTREMELY generous portion of cornish game hen and rice and beans, plated in an imaginative way. ( I'm a sucker for great plating.... shows extra care and finesse) Moles were awesome... I think one was a pomegranite mole which was my favorite,... we also had the pastor negro, I think pork with smoked blackened chiles... ( I don't eat pork but hubby LOVED it) other folks had the flautas which they loved .. the kid portion was 3 nicely sized flautas with rice and beans for $6! For dessert, we had the "cannoli" with guava ricotta, passionfruit masa panna cotta ( lovely flavor but the the texture was odd.... I think it would have been perfection with a smoother texture), churro with chocolate dipping sauce.... all MUCHO delicioso! We all LOVED our food and service was great despite being an extremely busy night. Decor was vibrant with lots of Dia De Los Muertos decorations. So the lows.... I didn't realize the neighborhood this was in... let's just say it's not Rodeo drive and that might keep some people from going when it's dark. As we got out of our car, an extremely friendly pitbull burst out of someone's house to aggresively show up some love... as someone that's been attacked by a dog, this really freaked me out... and my kid too so that was quite jarring.. ( nothing to do with the restaurant but was a big part of of our evening that my son couldn't get past) It was extremely noisy due to the music blaring loud and being seated next to a large fan... we had to yell at each other to have conversation. Wow. Wow, wow, wow. So much to say. The cuisine here and what Chef Dionicio is offering as a showcase and rendition of his slice of Mexican cuisine is transporting. I'm deeply passionate about food and Mexican cuisine--and we had consciousness-altering experiences through this food. We overordered just to get to try more of the food, and I wished we'd ordered even more! Absolutely worthy of full James Beard award status. I hope he gets it. Then to experience the ambiance and what Chef and the team have created as this incredible hearth of beauty and community as an oasis of vibrancy in their neighborhood is remarkable. THEN to learn about Chef's life story through the feature in the Philadelphia Inquirer and to feel all he's transcended expressed as beauty & power in the food. I had heard great things about this neighborhood gem, so when my good friend chose it for their birthday dinner, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to try it out. We called ahead to see if they could accommodate a small group reservation and was told no problem, with a $100 deposit that we gladly paid. Our party arrived on time and was informed of an additional 20-minute wait, which we understood given it was a Saturday night. We headed to the bar hoping to grab a drink while we waited, but ignored by several staff members until we finally flagged someone down. The bartender did apologize and explained they were understaffed and he was managing everything alone. 30 minutes past our reservation time, we were finally seated. We were very hungry and quickly ordered appetizers, including salsa and guacamole. Again, after 20 minutes with no food, we followed up with the server. He explained that the kitchen was backed up with online orders and struggling to keep up with the dining room. An hour and a half after our initial reservation time, our appetizers and a single round of drinks finally arrived. Wish I could say things were better once the entrees finally arrived, but the food was not hot and not worth the wait. After a bill totaling close to $500, I really wanted to love this place and support a local business, but the service, delays, and overall experience made it a major letdown. read more
