    Nachos (no meat)

Really glad we visited this place before leaving Philadelphia -- I would probably go here once a week if it was a neighborhood spot for me. My friend and I split some nachos that were fantastic--plenty of cheese, but not too much, good salsa, crema, avocado and jalapeños. I had the barbacoa tacos, a weekend special, that were served with consomme (similar to birria). They were delicious. My friend had chicken tinga tostadas that looked and smelled amazing. She also had a hibiscus agua fresca that she really enjoyed. The service was friendly and fast, the decor was pleasant, and they had a great menu. It was hard to choose an appetizer and I had a hard time choosing the barbacoa tacos (though I have no regrets).

    Gringas

Came in early one chilly afternoon. We were seated immediately. We started with the Guacamole which I couldn't get enough of. The gringas were ordered but I knew I'd probably only eat 1. It was alright. Just something I didn't gravitate towards. I had the Tacos Spruce with 3 different meats. One chorizo, one steak and Mexican ground beef. That chorizo was definitely the stand out for me. All in all, it was a good taco spot to try. Nothing was really a wow for me. There were a lot of take out orders which was good to see. Would definitely get a to go order from here one day.

I remember the hype when this place first opened and coming here regularly as a student in the area, and glad to say it still hits! Nice service, reasonable prices for huge portions, and an extensive menu with something for everyone. Yes the entree platters are half rice and beans but they're GOOD rice and beans and along with the generous entree itself I always end up taking half of my meal home. On top of that you get complimentary chips and salsas, and again, GOOD ones that I'm very happy to fill up on. This is also the first place where I tried both mole and lengua and got introduced to those amazing and authentic Mexican ingredients. I miss living closer to here and glad I got to stop by recently.

    Birria tacos and consome

Have been to their other location, so stopped in here as I know they have good food. Same great menu is available here as well, and there is some nice outdoor sidewalk seating in a quieter street. Basket of tortilla chip with salsa verde and roja brought out before your meal which is great and very welcome. Love their horchata as well, perfect on a hot summer day. The birria taco with consomme was excellent as well. Nice tender meat with right amount of other toppings. Broth could have used a bit more kick though it is still great. Quick service and good value. Overall great just as expected. Thanks

It's time to update. This place is almost exactly across the street from me so the convenience is unbeatable but even if it were not, you'd still find me there. Their food is delicious and fresh. (Find me many nights just dropping by to pick up chips and salsa). Their shrimp fajita is my favorite but really order anything. Their choices for breakfast are so good and they open at 10! They are consistent and delicious. If you want a taste of Mexico you can get that right on this corner in West Philly!

Yummmmmmy food!! Ordered this on a whim when I was too busy studying to cook and i'm glad i did!! The birria tacos with mozzarella were sooo juicy and flavorful and the flautas were crispy and packed with shredded chicken. They also gave me a free slice of tres leches cake which i'm not sure if that was an accident or intentional but as someone who used to live in miami and was obsessed with tres leches cake, I definitely didn't complain. I will definitely order from here again.

    Carne Asada

Clearly homemade tortilla chips and thick, creamy salsa off the bat were amazing during the short wait. The salsa verde was super limey and yummy. The servers were very nice, probably checked up on me 10 times throughout and brought a free refill of chips and salsa before I could even ask, which I used to make chilaquiles at home the next day. The Carne Asada was a little thin, but tasted good anyways. The rice, beans, pico, avocado, and cheese were really good mixed together and I ate them with the tortillas on the side. Fries were impressively crispy. It felt a little busy and high-end, but the food was authentic. Murals on the walls, music in the background, and large portions of authentic food.

    Yucky lettuce

Food was good but not great. Second time I go here, not impressed. I got some yucky lettuce in this item. They were nice about providing chips and salsa while I waited for my to go order but the girl at the front desk was on her phone (personal) when my order was done so she took an additional 5 minutes to give me my food.

    Fajitas don Barriga

The only bad thing I can think to say about Don Barriga, really has nothing to do with the restaurant. The parking in the area sucks, but the food is worth the hassle! Dined in at DonBarriga on a random weekday for a late lunch. My husband and I were the only people dining in for most of our time there, but they were hustling out tons of to-go orders. Collectively we ordered 'Fajitas Don Barriga' and a 'California Burrito'. The portions are hefty, the service is quick and the flavors are authentic. ProTip: BYOB!

I lived by Don Barriga for my grad school journey. They have great burritos, tacos, and gorditas. And please try their tres leches. So good!

The meat in the tacos was so dry that it was hard to chew and swallow. Some of the pieces were cooked to a crisp. No amount of salsa could make them better. I'm sorry I didn't take photos of the tacos, but trust me me I get no pleasure from leaving a bad review for this place; I am not lying or exaggerating. I thought they were going to be one of our local gems. I choked down a half a taco, gave the rest to my husband and he couldn't eat them either. The churros actually had raw batter in the middle and the outside was rubbery and hard at the same time. You could barely bite through it. I'm a cook and I know that that is about keeping the oil at an even temperature to get the inside done and not overcook the outside. Someone in the kitchen did not know what they were doing. The thing is, I have had their food before and it was pretty good. I don't know if there is a new chef or what happened, but I can't trust them after this experience.

Good: old fashioned, tri-mix of guac (liked the truffle one), steak tacos. Not so good:coco tartare app, I thought most of the other tacos were tried were very okay for the price and would not recommend (shrimp, pastor (one of my least favorite versions of pastor), one with habaenro (not spicy at all). Would have enjoyed some actual spicy salsa to go with it. Overall, I sadly can't really recommend it.

I was even getting too hungry to be able to make a decision. After he offers to help me by making a decision, I decide we will go to blue corn. He informs me of a large snapping turtle he saw on his way to me. We head back, she has now gathered a concerned posse,, everyone trying to figure out how involved to get. I look at my date who is already googling "how to pick up snapper turtle". I laugh and look back up to see that he has pretty much handled it, people clap for him, and we are back on our way to the italian market. We sit outside because it's the only option, and I am overwhelmed because its all babies yelling, plates clanking, cars passing, pedestrians walking. I usually don't like eating outside, but sometimes that's the music and you blink through it and you're good. So the first thing we order is the Ofrenda De Los Dioses. It comes to us quickly and smothered in a vibrant green sauce. I watch my date pick up his fork and knife, but I'm still looking through the menu for what else I want, and I am an only child so I don't want him to eat without me. This was my favorite thing we ate, but I do not have a photo of it because my date brought out the neurosis in me and everything went white. But I suggest you eat this too. I ordered a classic margarita , and it came in a glass that made me feel like I was the most interesting person on the block and it was my birthday. I ordered tinga sopecitos and our charismatic server suggested I could just get one of each. Everyone who works here is really great at talking about the food they serve, and I have a lot of admiration for this. I enjoyed listening to the staff talk to other tables about all kinds of stuff on the menu. My date ordered the Blue tacos, they come out looking beautiful, and he's clearly enjoying them when he realizes he never washed his hands after picking up his lady turtle friend. We laugh, he continues to eat his food,, I continue to hold his hand. One thing I love about blue corn is that they really let flavors breathe. Nothing is overly salty or drenched in any one flavor. Sometimes I find chorizo a bit indulgent , where I can only have it in small amounts, but the chorizo sopecito was my favorite. You can taste everything you're eating, and I think this simplicity lends itself very well to dishes that center good corn and herbs. We basically lick our plates and our server asks if we want dessert and my date says no. Red flag I know. He didn't know that I decided we were having dessert like 45 minutes ago when I watched a few cheeky sweets go to a table behind him. I order myself a flan and cafe de olla. I will not share. The cafe tastes like sitting at the kitchen table with whichever guru you love the most. The flan was adorned with strawberries and my date's spoon, and of course when I ask what his favorite thing was he says the flan he politely declined at first. Later he says something about sometimes the thing you don't want is the thing you need. So true.
