Don Barriga is such a cute family owned Mexican restaurant! The staff were super friendly and the service was very good. When we were seated we got water and chips with two different salsas. One was salsa verde and the other was some sort of hot salsa... both were so good! If you like spicy, you'd love the hot salsa. Our food came out very quick despite a busy Friday night and A LOT of to go orders being made. I got the chipotle salad and it was super good and the portion was big. Really glad we visited this place before leaving Philadelphia -- I would probably go here once a week if it was a neighborhood spot for me. My friend and I split some nachos that were fantastic--plenty of cheese, but not too much, good salsa, crema, avocado and jalapeños. I had the barbacoa tacos, a weekend special, that were served with consomme (similar to birria). They were delicious. My friend had chicken tinga tostadas that looked and smelled amazing. She also had a hibiscus agua fresca that she really enjoyed. The service was friendly and fast, the decor was pleasant, and they had a great menu. Came in early one chilly afternoon. We were seated immediately. We started with the Guacamole which I couldn't get enough of. The gringas were ordered but I knew I'd probably only eat 1. It was alright. Just something I didn't gravitate towards. I had the Tacos Spruce with 3 different meats. One chorizo, one steak and Mexican ground beef. That chorizo was definitely the stand out for me. All in all, it was a good taco spot to try. Nothing was really a wow for me. There were a lot of take out orders which was good to see. I remember the hype when this place first opened and coming here regularly as a student in the area, and glad to say it still hits! Nice service, reasonable prices for huge portions, and an extensive menu with something for everyone. Yes the entree platters are half rice and beans but they're GOOD rice and beans and along with the generous entree itself I always end up taking half of my meal home. On top of that you get complimentary chips and salsas, and again, GOOD ones that I'm very happy to fill up on. This is also the first place where I tried both mole and lengua and got introduced to those amazing and authentic Mexican ingredients. When your (adult) child refuses to choose another Mexican restaurant you know you have to try it when in town. Honestly, I was skeptical of their insistence, I thought that maybe, just maybe they were partial to a single dish, hence the refusal to eat Mexican when visiting me. So, we ordered - mind you, I am from Chicago, so I know what excellent Mexican food is like. Delivery took a bit, no problem, but we were starving and I knew I had to be aware that things taste a wee bit better when you are. They had Sopa Azteca and it was vegetarian omg. Restaurants rarely have non-meat-based soups. Please, and thank you. Second gold star. I shared vegetarian nachos with my husband and did not want to share my soup. My child got something delicious (can't remember, but they let me taste it) and fries. Now if you know me, fries are my weakness. Even terrible fries, I will eat them. They were more share-y than I was and I ate most of their fries. They were delicious! I placed a catering order two weeks in advance and provided a clear drop-off time. The day before the event, I confirmed with the restaurant that everything was on track. Five minutes before the scheduled delivery, I called to confirm the food was en route and was told it was. When the food had not arrived after the delivery window, I called again and was told it would be another 8-10 minutes--exactly when my meeting was supposed to begin. When the food still hadn't arrived, I tried to call several more times. The restaurant stopped answering, and my subsequent calls did not go through. The delivery driver eventually called after my meeting had started, and it became clear he did not have the accurate drop-off instructions I had provided with my order. Despite multiple calls and clarifications, the delivery was delayed further due to traffic and confusion about the location. The food finally arrived about 30 minutes late, long after my meeting was underway. I wasn't able to attend the meeting myself, so I can't speak to the quality of the food. This was an extremely frustrating and unprofessional experience. While the food may be fine for dine-in, I would not trust this restaurant for catering again. read more

It's time to update. This place is almost exactly across the street from me so the convenience is unbeatable but even if it were not, you'd still find me there. Their food is delicious and fresh. Yummmmmmy food!! Ordered this on a whim when I was too busy studying to cook and i'm glad i did!! The birria tacos with mozzarella were sooo juicy and flavorful and the flautas were crispy and packed with shredded chicken. Clearly homemade tortilla chips and thick, creamy salsa off the bat were amazing during the short wait. The salsa verde was super limey and yummy. The servers were very nice, probably checked up on me 10 times throughout and brought a free refill of chips and salsa before I could even ask, which I used to make chilaquiles at home the next day. The Carne Asada was a little thin, but tasted good anyways. The rice, beans, pico, avocado, and cheese were really good mixed together and I ate them with the tortillas on the side. I was in the area and it IS Tuesday so why not. I'll preface this review with I just relocated from LA, so tacos and Mexican food in general is my thang. I also don't like writing unsavory reviews as I believe there is always room for growth in anything! So let's get to the deets. I ordered an asada burrito and 3 tacos (because you can't just order 1) so I got the carnitas, Al pastor, and lengua (tongue). The burrito was massive it came with a side of chips and guacamole, which was good. I'm not really used to crema on my burrito but it was tasty. The steak however lacked a bit of seasoning for my liking, but with the salsas it was good. The Al pastor taco was very tasty as was the carnitas. The lengua on the other hand was a bit tough and sliced lengthwise and I'm more used to cubes of it in a taco. The red and green salsas were yummy and I appreciated the limes and cuke slices, but missed the radishes. Overall, I will probably be back but please add utensils and napkins to takeout orders. When we came here, it was already very crowded, not a lot of seats left - we were seated on a bench and a few other waiters came over asking why we were seated at the bench because it tends to tip over - then why have it there and not fix it? We were parched and starving so we were ok with it. The chips and salsa are to die for. There's this orange sauce that is the stuff of gods. Easily the best salsa I've ever had. They bottle it and sell it and I was seriously tempted. There's a part of it that tastes vaguely asian like they added sesame oil or something but boy is it good. 2. Pro tip, ask for "angus beef" as your meat choice. It's a slight up charge but a secret menu item that will give you the most tender little cubes of steak in your burrito ever. 3. Dang where to start with the burrito! This thing looks a tad small but it was dense. It was the californian style and the french fries were cooked to perfection. After it snowed in Philadelphia was the only one in the restaurant on my lunch break and I ordered three chicken tacos. Being that I'm the only person they can take all the time they need to cook my food. Within 2 hours I had to leave work due to under cooked chicken. My body was trying to take it out, but it couldn't process it. 11 o'clock at night I was throwing up. And on the toilet all night long. I can't believe it's taken me so long to write this review. My only excuse is that every single time I want to write a review, I've already devoured my entire meal and have no pictures to show, but this time I made the effort to take a photo before engorging. My absolute favorite thing on the menu is their chicken tacos, as simple as that sounds (for the record chicken is the only protein I eat on their menu, so I can't judge their others). The chicken is always well seasoned and flavorful, the meat is not dry. The tacos are loaded and not shy with the amount of chicken per taco. They are served with limes, radishes and cucumbers and 2 salsas (one mild green salsa and a red smokey spicy salsa). The salsas are both perfection, incredibly flavorful and add such a nice touch to the tacos. Their nachos are also delicious. I used to love the nachos at Loco Pez, and don't get me wrong they're still a great option especially on happy hour. But Don Barrigas I find more flavorful, and very generous portions just like Loco Pez. There was a time that my husband and I were starving, so we both ordered an entree and nachos for an appetizer. Once the delivery arrived, we both literally laughed out loud because the nachos were huge - neither of us even got to dig in to our entrees. My hubby also said he loves their chicken enchiladas. Second time ever at Don Barriga, and this time it was to satisfy a burrito craving. While my partner wasn't dazzled when he tried one several months ago, I'm happy to not have let that deter me, because the vegetarian burrito is pretty fantastic. Huge, served with a generous dollop of guacamole and tortilla chips too, this is easily two delicious meals for me. The awesomeness was enough to bump my rating from an initial 4 stars to a full 5! Also, can't neglect to mention the great service during COVID19 restrictions. I've had plenty of Mexican food, but this was the best restaurant I've been to in a while. Not only was the service fast, the food was excellent, the portions were HUGE and the price point was perfect. We started off we the nachos which were generously covered in toppings. Then I got the California burrito with a scoop of guac on the side which was tasty. I also had a taste of the birria which made me wish I had chosen that over the burrito. Next time, though. Lastly, we ended with the Tres Leches cake and the fried plantains. Each were a great option for "something sweet" after the meal. After all of that had multiple boxes to go.
