    2. Steak Fajita

Food: One of the best authentic Mexican restaurants in the Spring Garden/Fairmount area. The fajitas are cheap and they give very generous portions. The meat is tender and perfectly seasoned; a umami bomb in your mouth. They give warm tortillas on the side. Everything in combination creates a harmonious little bite. Some of my other favorite menu items that I would recommend is definitely the Al pastor wet burrito and Al pastor tostadas. The al pastor is marinated very well and cooked to perfection. The wet burrito is nice and warm with a choice of red or green salsa on top. It's one of the best I can find in the area. Service: Quick & friendly. No complaints at all. Ambiance: Small restaurant with some bar seating. There's nothing special to note. It's a great place for a casual meal for 2-4.

If your looking for tacos somewhere that's not south Philly then this is DEFINITELY the place to go. Considering the prices, I think it's well worth the visit. They have everything you could possibly want and as a student it's definitely a frequent spot for me to visit! Not to mention their birria tacos are significantly cheaper than most restaurants and they're JUST AS GOOD! Make sure you try out their different hot sauces and I personally recommend eating in versus ordering take out. Corn tortillas don't hold up that well over time so eating it as soon as it's ready is a much different experience! It's kind of in a less crowded area but it's a cute little shop run by very generous people!

I have no complaints about anything! This place needs more recognition, the servings are generous and the price isn't crazy, will definitely eat from here again. Everything was flavorful, tacos weren't dry, consomé had great flavor, chips were salted nicely, queso dip was huge, and both desserts hit the spot after all that!

This restaurant was amazing! We got the Carne Asada Platter and Burrito Al pastor and it tasted just like home. You definitely get your moneys worth at this restaurant for huge platters. The meat was juicy and tender and so delicious. The burrito was packed and so much flavor in each bite. The service was so kind and lovely. The churros were a sweet treat after the savory food. The ambiance was small but made the conversations with others more heartfelt.

When I travel, I like to eat at places away from the tourist or even trendy spots. I prefer small, back street spots where the locals eat. This is a small hole-in-the-wall place that is exactly what I look for when traveling, except it's right here in Philly. My son and I stopped in here before a show at Union Transfer. The place is small with 3, maybe 4 tables. Most of their business seemed to be take out as there was a constant flow of people picking up. So, let's get to the food. This is real, authentic Mexican food and it was amazing. I had the Taco Al Pastor with a side of rice and beans (that's al a carte add on). Pork on taco was moist, tender, flavorful. Served on a double layer of soft tortilla with onion, cilantro, and a wedge of lime. Perfect My son had the Shrimp in spicy sauce "plate" (Camarones A La Diabla) The sauce was incredible. This came with rice and beans, guacamole and some warm flour tortillas. I got to taste a bit of the sauce and it was spicy and delicious. They have soft drinks. We brought our own beer.

This place is a little tucked away hidden gem. Not the biggest dining space for indoor eating, but they also have a small outdoor space. I order the carne asada Plato and it was delicious. Everything was made fresh to order and if you sit at the bar stools by the counter you can see them cook and prep the food. Service was great and the staff was really nice. I would definitely come back. My friend ordered the carnitas Plato that he also said was great but I don't have a pic of it.

This is a cute little store on the corner of a pretty lowkey street. I was really excited to try this place because I'm always looking for a yummy taco place. The tacos definitely hit the spot and the marinade on the Al pastor was really delicious. The birria tacos were a bit dry but maybe that was because I took it to go. The prices are a bit higher than I expected, but the service is good and the vibes in the restaurant are really cute and cozy. It's also byob, so I will definitely come back to sit down and eat!

    2. Grilled Chicken Plate

It's a smaller place, and for many people it might be more convenient for takeout, but the food here was amazing! Well seasoned, authentic, and just simple dishes done right

Booths and bar seating is available as well as a patio on weekends. It is located in a sketchy area but a police car is stationed on the corner. I felt as safe as I do in other areas of Philly. Street parking is available within a few feet. The cocktails were very good with many different kinds of margs and other drinks. Beer and wine are also available. We were greeted as soon s we walked in by both the bartender and one of the owners. Our server brought water as soon as we sat down. She was attentive and helpful with explanations. The food here is authentic! Several different kinds of guacamole are available. We chose the one with pomegranate. It added a nice crunch and flavor. One with grasshopper was available. lol that was a no for me! The trio of empanadas were delicious. We shared a carnitas taco platter and branzino platter. The tacos were tasty. The branzino was cooked nicely with good flavor. The rice and beans and Brussels spouts and mushrooms were all delicious. I'll definitely be back!

The meat in the tacos was so dry that it was hard to chew and swallow. Some of the pieces were cooked to a crisp. No amount of salsa could make them better. I'm sorry I didn't take photos of the tacos, but trust me me I get no pleasure from leaving a bad review for this place; I am not lying or exaggerating. I thought they were going to be one of our local gems. I choked down a half a taco, gave the rest to my husband and he couldn't eat them either. The churros actually had raw batter in the middle and the outside was rubbery and hard at the same time. You could barely bite through it. I'm a cook and I know that that is about keeping the oil at an even temperature to get the inside done and not overcook the outside. Someone in the kitchen did not know what they were doing. The thing is, I have had their food before and it was pretty good. I don't know if there is a new chef or what happened, but I can't trust them after this experience.

But El Rey is good in its own right, taking familiar foods and flavors, with a bit of a fancier twist, and making a good meal that I love to eat and enjoy! Seating and service here is friendly and prompt. Even when it's pretty loud and seems packed, there are always a handful of open tables available, where we've usually been able to be seated almost immediately. Such was the case this evening. We were on a bit of a time crunch so we ordered immediately and our food came out so fast that the waiter for our table was surprised as the food beat him with our napkins to the table. We ordered the Tuna Tostada and the Yucatan Spiced Chicken Fajitas. Both were amazing! Good thing for our tight timeline, the food was gone as fast as it came. The waiter helpfully recommend the house hot sauce, which was certainly spicy and a good compliment on our fajitas. Overall, a great place to dine for Mexican-inspired! Laying aside my California bias, El Rey is a fun time every time we come.

I hadn't been to El Rey in years, but we scored last-minute Valentine's reservations and WOW. The vibe was lively, warm, and perfect for a fun night out. - Let's talk about these STEAK TACOS . Perfectly seasoned, tender, flavorful -- the kind of bite that makes you close your eyes for a second. They were so good I came back two days later just for them. That's not a craving... that's infatuation. - The Chayote Salad completely surprised me. Fresh, bright, and paired with their homemade hot sauce? My palate was awakened. I even brought it home (with dressing and hot sauce on the side) and it still hit! Speaking of heat -- if you love spicy food, ASK for their homemade hot sauce. It's bold, fiery, and addictive. I genuinely want a bottle for home. Service? 10/10. From the manager to the hosts to the bartender -- everyone was kind, attentive, and patient. They even remembered me from Valentine's Day, which says everything about how they treat their guests. Bathroom Check: Clean? Yes. Cute ambiance? Yes. Great mirror for photos? Absolutely.
