This is a wine bar in name, but a standout is the cicchetti. You'll find tons of them, all priced at €2 a piece as of October 2023. They're all very very good and a value at that price. They lean heavy into the seafood which makes sense given Venice. All are served in white bread which is a little boring but is customary and does emphasize the flavor of the toppings. The house wine is super cheap and a great complement to the cicchetti. Order the white. Staff is friendly and manages the chaotic interior well. They speak English and do accept credit cards. Eat outside for breathing room.
Saw this spot on "Somebody feed Phil" and decided to give them a try. Unlike the other popular Cichetti (Or Tapas) spot they're open later so that was convenient. A Wine bar with some interesting Cichetti. Although just arriving from Spain, one can never have too much when it comes to Tapas. The cool part about this spot is that it has a great selection of wine for purchase as well. They had some traffic but not too busy around 4:30 on a Monday. So many varieties, so little time. Ordered 3- Crema de Pistachio with Formaggiai (as tasty as it sounds), Polipo e Sedano (you had me at Octopus) and Ricotta Zucca and Parmigiano (cheese lovers delight.). Paired with a Pinot Grigio which was perfect on this warm afternoon! Wanted to try more but then it would turn into a meal vs snack. Service was friendly and fast. One of the best spots for Cichetti and wine in Venezia. Netflix foodie series favorite that lives up to the hype!
Yummy & inexpensive and so Venetian. This was our favorite spot in Venice. Do you have to be careful because the seagulls are aggressive, but I would suggest getting the paper plates and paper cup and standing outside by the canal. The ciccheti are all a little small bites of what they consider sandwiches and gives you an opportunity to try a bunch of different things. Don't be a typical American!! Try something new. If you don't like it, you can always go to the second sandwich but don't worry. Feel like everything here. It's delicious. I especially liked the shrimp with onions, which surprised me. Staff is friendly and you can get a spritz to keep you cool.

You eat standing around wherever there is space, plate with a couple in one hand, wine in the other. Have a few and move to the next spot and repeat. Tip: Cash only. This applies to almost all cicchetti bars in the city. Tip: Go early. "Lunch" 11:00-13:00, "dinner" 17:00 - 18:00 for the best selection. Family owned and run. Part wine store, part cicchetti bar. That said, there is a huge emphasis on wine of the Veneto with many selections by the glass offered. Just describe what you want; rosso, bianco, dry, off dry or better yet, just let the owner pour what they want. Note: Do not be that tourist who orders a aperol spritz. This place is wine centric not stupid centric. Fish and a sweet fizzy drink??? Food? Everything on a slice of fresh baked bread. A smear of fresh farmers cheese mixed with a pistachio puree and mounted with black truffle oil topped with spicy peppers. Ham topped with flash sautéed eggplant sat in EVOO, ricotta and egg topped by smoked sturgeon, creamy mix of gorgonzola and fresh mascarpone with walnuts. The selection keeps changing. In the end, everything is rich (cheese or EVOO added deliberately), aggressively seasoned, and all pair very well with wines. Service is gruff, indifferent, and 100 percent authentic. Don't bother to queue. Be aggressive, catch the attention of one of the people behind the counter and order else you'll wait forever. Tasty, fun and the proper alternative to take away pizza, calzones, sandwiches and pastas fed to tourist. Excellent.
The Venice food scene is known for Cicchetti which are basically Venetian Tapas. On a recent trip my wife and I visited a few popular locations for Cicchetti. Cantinone Gia Schiavi was our first stop and it turned out to be our favorite spot for this type of food. The bar is outside of the main tourist areas so be ready to trek through and possibly get lost amongst various narrow alleyways and canals. However, the trek was fun and the reward was worth it. We were greeted with a line outside the entrance with moved very rapidly and we were able to order in about 5 minutes. At the bar I basically pointed to what I wanted at times guessing what the toppings were, but everything looked delicious. I also ordered two cups of house wine and took the food outside to eat adjacent to the canal and people watched. One of the Cicchetti was a small pickled onion topped with rich flavorful briny anchovies and capers, another had cream cheese with pesto topped with a juicy sundried tomato, another had a soft sliced hardboiled egg with a tender mushroom, and the last one had fresh flavorful salmon sitting on cream cheese. The quality and flavors of the ingredients were phenomenal. Please make it a point to visit.

It was off season, so we had an easier time getting in and we simply ate at the back bar standing up. I DO wish they labeled things a little better, but I guess that's part of the adventure. We of course tried the tuna with cocoa (couldn't taste the cocoa!) and the octopus. My fave was the egg and truffle combo. Give it a shot if you're nearby then head a few feet down the canal for another round with the younger crowd. You can't miss them with their glowing orange aperol spritzes. It was like a cichetti crawl!
The first thing I learned in Venice was do NOT judge a book by its cover... if you didn't know about this FANTASTIC cafe with award-winning cicchetti, you would keep on walking past it (almost looks like a liquor store from the outside). This "bacaro" (Venetian wine bar that serves ombre (wine) and cicchetti (tapas)) is owned and operated by a Venetian family; you'll see the owner herself, Signora Alessandra, behind the counter making the cicchetti fresh every day (as well as other family members taking orders). We tried several different types of cicchetti- and every single one was amazing. The meat and/or fish, cheese, and herbs on top of the crunchy piece of bread all come together in one bite-sized portion. I highly recommend trying this bacaro- be prepared for it to be crowded inside (shoulder to shoulder), and simply point to the ones you want to try!!
Each stop in Italy brought new things to try, specialties of the city or region in which I found myself. In Venice, cichetti are the thing to sample. Cichetti, essentially, are Venice's equivalent to tapas in Spain; sort of a happy hour treat to kick off your early evening. Rounding a bend on the winding paths of Venice, I found what I was looking for in Cantinone Gia Schiavi. Tourists were spilling out of the place, queued up along the canal out front, precariously balancing small plates full of bread-based bites and plastic glasses filled with cheap wine. Aggressive gulls were at the ready, seeking their opportunity to swoop in and grab a bite of their own. I enjoyed that atmosphere-heavy environment for my initial plate of cichetti but for the second go-round I staked out space inside. If you like your own personal space, look elsewhere (it gets very crowded). Cantinone Gia Schiavi makes it easy for those without Italian language skills to navigate their system. Belly up to the glass cases, catch the eye of a worker behind it, and begin pointing at exactly what you wish to fill your plate with. I wasn't wowed by anything I sampled (the bread on which almost everything sits is very uninteresting) but I certainly enjoyed the experience and appreciated that they're constantly adding fresh plates full of cichetti to the case. It's easy to overspend here without overeating. My son and I wolfed down platefuls number one and two and were desirous of actual dinner not much later. Something about the setting, the crowds, and the fact that there are no tables encourages one to act quickly. As a result, I think the ideal way to approach this cichetti experience is to fill one plate for two with everything you desire, couple it with a cup of wine or prosecco, eat, drink, and be on your way. It's not a meal nor is it relaxing but it's an experience you must have while in Venice.

Have google translate out if you want to know exactly what youre getting into, although some signs were missing. Cicchetti looked fresh and was 1,5€ each and an Aperol spritz was only 2€. We ate on the other side of the canal trying our best to avoid the seagulls :) Great if you're into fish, but even if you're not you should still try it out!
On my way from looking at Squero di San Trevaso (where gondole are refurbished in an old cabin on the side of the canal - worth a visit by the way), I wandered up the canal to see a crowded little place where many people were enjoying cicchetti and a glass of wine outside on the canal. Upon entering this small cantina, I was amazed at the wide selection of cicchetti available, all fresh. I ordered only three, with a small glass of white wine, and stood at the bar with locals and tourists alike to enjoy these wonderful bites. If you come to Venice and have some free time away from the usual tourist spots, ask Siri to find this for you and visit. You won't be disappointed, and by the way, their selection of wine and alcohol is tremendous at reasonable prices
Opening time is definitely not something they're keeping track of. It's more of a guideline and +/- 30 minutes was just how it goes. Small line was ready to order by the time they opened. Bottles are super cheap here for wine and liquor. But the cicchetti is what drew in the crowd. Lots to choose from. Some with simple flavors and ingredients and others being more fancy and complex. Pretty cheap eats for a pick me up a few hours before dinner. Standing room only or take it to go so you can enjoy by the canal. Cool experience while visiting Venice. read more

This place was great. It was a cozy spot with very affordable cicchetti. But most impressive was the wine selection. It was really cool standing amongst all the bottles enjoying a glass debating whether or not there's enough space in your luggage for another bottle. read more

Wonderful spot with a lot of variety. Can't recall all the cicchetti I ordered, but the tuna cacao, baccalà, and the one with trout roe were my favorites. Would definitely go back to try more. read more

Stopped in here on a hot Thursday afternoon and got a couple of drinks and 10 cicchetti for about 16 euros. You can stand outside with plastic plates and cups, but we elected to stand inside. Favorites were the salmon roll up, the Gorgonzola and the anchovy sandwiches. Spritzes are on the small side but the price was low so that's good! Recommended! read more

I was so taken with the concept of cicchetti while we were in Venice! It was busy when we went in near lunch time, but the staff will get you in and out. I especially wanted to try this bacari because I'd seen a picture of their pumpkin and ricotta cicchetti and it did not disappoint, though the pear/balsamic/blue cheese combo was pretty amazing as well. My husband grabbed a couple of fishier ones -- I think one was more of a fish dip and the other was salmon -- and I wish I'd done that too because they were so good! Overall, I liked the selection at Osteria Al Squero better but the drinks were better here and there's room for both in my life! read more
Rating: 78/100 pts When in Venice, in addition to trying the local specialties (seafood, tiramisu, etc), I also recommend delving into their "cichetti"--unique Venetian-style tapas, often served at a bar and eaten while standing and socializing. Vino Già Schiavi happens to be the perfect place to try them. They have a wide selection of choices, most of which are a colorful combination of ingredients served atop a slice of baguette. Some of the ones I tried include: "ricotta cheese w/ walnut sauce & currants", and "smoked tuna w/ dandelions & balsamic" (see pics for the colorful presentation). As a rarity in Venice, prices are great (each item is around €1.20 a piece), the ingredients are fresh, the staff is pleasant, and the crowd is lively. They also have a few non-bread items, including sliced salami. And for something more filling, they have a selection of sandwiches (see the chalkboard)--simple, but cheap and prepared fresh to order. Great for a light, but thoroughly satisfying meal or snack. I went in the evening, and the place was hopping with locals. read more

Decided to follow Rick Steves yet again after our visit to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. A fabulous cicchetti spot with warm inviting staff. We sampled several as pictured. The pear gorganzola was our favorite. Paired all with house white wine. read more

Finally we found a great cicchetteria in Venice. We visited this place multiple times during our stay in February. Food was delicious with a bunch of different kinds of chichetti. They had both savory and sweet chichetti and even had wonderful house wine that was very affordable. I will definitely be returning to this restaurant with my wife if I'm ever back in Venice. read more

Just read most of the Elite Yelp reviews (grazie!), they are spot on. Cool, inexpensive, unique small bites and proseco at the counter. So glad we came to this neighborhood on the other side of the canal from our hotel. One of the best experiences in Venice. read more

The cichetti were fantastic, and inexpensive, so try a few! Great wine and liquor selection as well. We asked the lady working to choose wine for us, her choices were great. This was a great stop in Venice. Highly recommended. read more

Their food is pretty good, but it's not an affordable option if you're looking to have a meal. 3 pieces and cup of presecco, and it's already 5 Euros. We went just to take a break from all that walking, so it was nice to relax by the canal and enjoy the sun setting. The crowds are probably really obnoxious to the neighboring businesses. read more
