Campo Santa Margherita has become a focal point for nightlife in Venice, for good and bad. Located on the outskirts of Campo Santa Margherita, away from the crowded bars and the people sitting on the ground in circle while drinking, Osteria alla Bifora is a place that serves really great food in a relaxing environment. Portions are quite large, and in fact we ended up over-ordering. The carpaccio di pescespada affumicato (smoked swordfish carpaccio) was an amazing dish, but also a really large one; I expected this to be an appetizer, but it was the size of a main course. The seppie al nero con polenta (black ink cuttlefish with polenta) is a typical venetian dish, and this was perhaps the best version of this dish I've ever had. I also loved the two dollops of baccala' mantecato that came as a side on this dish. The verdure grigliate (grilled vegetables) were great. I don't remember much about the lasagna, which we ordered for our young kid; we certainly could have skipped this dish, given the amount of food we ordered. We really enjoyed the outdoor dining, as it was a warm summer evening. The inside looks really nice too, and I imagine that coming here during the winter months is going to be just as enjoyable. Once we discovered Osteria alla Bifora (and Campo Santa Margherita square) we came here three nights in a row. Is there anything more lovely than an aperitivo or digestif and a big platter of salumi while sitting in the charming, lively square watching the world go by? Lovely little spot for a snack and a drink! Portions are huge, but well-priced and tasty. And they are open late! We really enjoyed the seafood cicchetti platter and charcuterie plates. Amazing freshly cut cured meats here! Make your way away from the touristy area and head over to Campo Santo Margarita square to dine at Bifora. You'll see a bunch of university kids hanging around this area. They have indoor and outdoor seating and are open late. I came at 10pm and it was still a packed house. There is a bar, but most people chose to enjoy some wine with their food rather than just hanging at the standing bar. The prosciutto with melon is to die for. The melon is so ripe, sweet, and juicy and pairs so well with the freshly sliced meats. The meat and cheese plate was also delicious. They gave 5 types of meats along with some cheese and olives. Bread is on the house, but I wouldn't waste your stomach space on this bread. My only gripes about the place was that they are terribly understaffed, so come with a lot of patience. You'll probably be waiting a while to take your order and for your food to come. The prosciutto was delicious, but some pieces were just too mushy and soft. read more

We must've eaten here three times in the one week we were staying in Venice. This is a great place for a casual and quick meal. The prosciutto plate is unbelievable. The quality of the prosciutto is amazing. It's tasty and buttery in texture and perfect with the bread. The restaurant is also known for their whipped salted cod and polenta. Almost my second apartment, well the my first real one was kind of close anyway. When I lived here, I loved so much this place. Mind you, reader, I only drank their awesome wines and drink ( for 'aperitivo'), and their ate plate of ham/salami/cheese ('tagliere di affettati'). But Still they can definitely make good food. I looked for a restaurant near my hotel. I chose the Osteria alla Bifora, because it was frequented by places, as well as few tourists. The dish I chose was the "baccalá con polenta". My wife ordered some kind of carpaccio. Both dishes were good, at least in appearance. The next day, diarrhea. Intestinal infection. Headache, vomiting. It ruined my stay in Venice that day. I went to Florence the next day, where I had to seek medical attention as soon as I arrived in the city. On showing the picture of the dish to the doctor, I was informed that it was possibly the mayonnaise used in the preparation of my dish that gave me intestinal infection. By the way, I was treated very well at the Hospital Santa Maria Nuova Firenze. CAUTION WITH BACCALA DISH WITH POLENTA. read more

We had a party of 6 & tried to sit outside (to make it easier on them) for lunch on one of the many free tables, owner came out & said we couldn't sit out there because it was "too cold" (although others were dining outside)...we went in and although over half the place was empty, he said all the tables were reserved. One of the very few authentic Osterias in Venezia, lot of local people, still tourists (like myself) are very welcome. A small selection of warm food (seppie alla veneziana!). If you wanna get a taste of real Venice, go there, have a couple of glasses of local wine, have a chat with the friendly chef, play around with his dog, and enjoy the tapas. read more

This place has great looking appetizers but terrible and unfortunately condescending service. 4 in our party & 3 separate shitty encounters when asking about items in menu or whether they are even open because it was sooooooo empty. Snotty italian waiters stare at you and roll their eyes when you ask if they are open in Italian - or even recommend any dishes on their menu. Too bad the chef in the back has to deal with front restaurant staff. I would not recommend. Ever. Please go elsewhere if you don't want indigestion. Even one of the other busier places that are hard to find an open table in summer, but have better ambiance and hospitality for good-paying and friendly tourists. read more

This is a restaurant that mainly serves cured meats. The meats are amazing. It is in a great area a bit off the beaten path so not quite as many tourists. The servings are large, so don't order one of the larger plates if there are only 2 of you. It would be an awesome place to go with a large group. read more
