Half chicken with real mashed potatoes and side veggie.
    Jeff B.

After reading the Yelp reviews, I almost talked myself out of coming here to eat dinner tonight. There are limited options in this Canyon lodge area. I thought maybe it would be safer and more tasty to get something from the hotel vending machine. But, no, I'm a Yelp person. I had to see for myself. Bottom line? It's a 50's style cafeteria with a limited dinner menu. The workers here were helpful and friendly. You don't buss your table and the place was pretty clean. And the food? I liked my half chicken with two sides (mashed potatoes and veggie of the day), which was surprisingly good. Like - shockingly good. The chicken was nicely seasoned and both pieces (even the light piece) was very moist. The potatoes were "real" red skin potatoes and the veggie today was roasted brussel sprouts. I give them credit - those take work and care; they could have just boiled some carrots or peas or green beans. The sprouts were very tasty and well prepared. I also got a side salad (pre-prepared) that was fresh and had lettuce, tomato, carrots and onion. Decent salad. With the entree, they offer you a gravy - beef, chicken or mushroom. They all looked pretty gelatinous, but I asked for mushroom on the side, thinking that maybe it was mushroom pieces as opposed to thickener. It wasn't. It was gelatinous and I didn't eat it. I considered the fish (trout), which also looked like it was well prepared and not dry. But I decided on the chicken. I had read that the Chinese food was not very good, and two people told me this evening that it was "downright awful." One of them barely touched their entree. Overall, I spoke to a couple of other people tonight and they said the chicken was the way to go. Everyone was pleased with the chicken.

While it was great to finally have a different lunch in the park (read: not a burger or sandwich), the food felt like you were eating frozen Costco meals. We ordered from Woks of Life and got two plates. You order at the counter and they plate up your selections. You get to choose a rice, protein type, a sauce, and you can get stir fried mix veggies on the side. For the protein, we got the orange chicken and the tofu with veggies. The food was ok taste-wise and was filling but nothing special to write home about. Plus it was about $16 per plate and the taste of the meal didn't match that value.

I wasn't expecting a lot considering the general rating (2 stars when I'm writing this), but I think some of the reviews are a bit harsh. Considering the fact that Yellowstone is trying to preserve the national park without introducing too much waste or pollution, I think the cafeteria has done a good job trying to produce healthy food for visitors. It's not the highest quality food out there, but keeping in mind that this is part of a national park, I think management has done a wonderful job delivering safe edible food that's seasoned and well priced considering supply chain challenges they must face on a regular basis. Simply talking about the food, it's cafeteria food. They're not being sneaky about it. You can't expect high end restaurant food, but it was still good. Especially since I probably can't do better without driving several hours into the city for a place with more access to natural ingredients. Grabbing the food and the dining is exactly like a cafeteria. You grab a tray, get what you want, pay on the way out and sit in a large dining hall. There's nothing wrong with it, but I get the general consensus; it's an okay experience.

I've left a previous review of this location, but it was taken down because the AI didn't believe I had actually been here. During our most recent trip to Yellowstone, we visited this location twice because they have quick decent food with some limited vegan options. While we were there, many of the summer staff had just started and were trying to figure everything out. The service was polite and helpful, but definitely understaffed for the busy summer season. The ambiance is a comfortable cafeteria style with ample space for families. We ordered the vegan sandwich, chicken strips, French fries and a grab n' go salad. If you're vacationing with kids, this is the quickest place to go with a variety of options. There is also a hot wok style counter as well. They also do a quick decent breakfast. The pancakes were our favorite.

Fried rice. It's an unusual brown because it's been soaked in soy sauce. Salty beyond belief and rice is undercooked.

We stayed at the Canyon Lodge for 2 nights and while the lodge itself is nice and clean, the food options are terrible. Unfortunate, you're a captive audience if you're staying at the lodge as there's not much within a convenient distance. The canyon dining areas have a few options but the offerings are very limited and to exacerbate things, a lot of the menu items were not available frequently. The drinks from the cafe are terrible and it takes forever to get. The bagels are stale and way over-toasted. We had the Asian food option one evening and it was inedible. The fried rice was a complete salt lick and the orange pork (was supposed to be chicken but they were out) was 95% breading and sweet sauce, very little protein. The trout was undercooked with soggy skin. The hotdog was probably the only thing somewhat palatable. The bar had a decent offering and the bartenders were friendly and quick.

Horrible Asian food. Plain boiled spaghetti. Tough beef. Overcooked. Bad flavor. Shrimp and egg rolls were ok though.
    Simon K.

I've come to realize that Xanterra Corporation has a monopoly on all of the lodging and dining throughout Yellowstone as well as other National Parks. That means you can't escape their sub par food no matter where you go. First and foremost the Asian food is terrible. And I normally love all kinds of Asian food. The noodles are just plain spaghetti that's boiled and then put on your plate. They have a couple different sauces but they're actually concentrated marinades that are extremely potent, such as Korean BBQ sauce and also Mongolian (spicy sweet and sour) sauce. So technically you can ask for sides of that and put some on your noodles but it doesn't turn out good. The beef dish is very low quality and tough. The vegetable dish was all fine sliced Julienne style and overcooked. They were completely out of chicken. Perhaps the only decent items were the egg rolls and fried shrimp. The American food was ok but completely cold! I had to put my entire plate in the microwave. I got the chicken, mac n cheese, beans, coleslaw, potato salad, and the red pepper soup. Surprisingly the best item was the coleslaw as it had a nice pineapple vinaigrette in it. The breakfast was average but luckily warm. I got the scrambled eggs with chopped bacon mixed in, potatoes, sausage links, waffle, and biscuit with gravy. It's a huge dining hall with plenty of seating. I can't believe they put all the menus in the window. Nobody notices them. The American food station has a TV showing the menu too. However the Asian food station TVs were completely dead. So everybody in line was totally confused as to what the options were. There is NO Wi-Fi in the cafeteria, not even for hotel guests! I couldn't believe it. Of course you also don't get a natural cell phone signal either because you're in the middle of nowhere. This is especially horrible if some of your party is still back at the hotel room and you have no way of communicating with them from the dining hall. For all of these reasons I will NOT come back to this nor any other Xanterra lodging/dining operation. I'll just get lodging outside of the park.

The rice and veggies and sauce are good. The meat is not edible
    Christine P.

This is the best of the lunch options in the park... and it still wasn't all edible. The asian selection was promising and the sauce was flavorful and we put it on the rice and it was sadly the best thing we had because the meat wasn't edible. So fried rice with sauce... that was lunch. They had several different sections to choose from and the mother in law got a hot dog and said it was decent but not great, the bun was stale. The park service really needs to do something about the contract with Xanterra, they need to go or they need to be held accountable. It is a such a waste of money and needs to be so much better. The meat was not even able to be chewed at all and was inedible. The veggies were good and some of the only vegetables to be found in the park. We came home craving fresh vegetables.

If you don't get that elusive email, email or call them, as the good dining time slots are otherwise gone. We ordered the gumbo (delicious), sticky ribs (awful - do not recommend), shrimp and grits (fantastic) and the steak salad (ok). We have been here many times before and the menu is now leaning to offer a lot of vegan options, great if you like that, limited menu if you don't. Still one of the better dining options in the park. They are pretty much all huge historic dining rooms serving overpriced mass banquet food. We stayed here 3 nights and the Dining Room at Yellowstone Lake Hotel is NOT a great restaurant by any means, but if you get your timing right, it is better than it's other brethren. I say timing because this restaurant is thankfully no longer a buffet, yet they are often out of menu items, even as early as 6pm. When I asked the restaurant manager why, he said they get food deliveries daily, but "we serve 500 covers a day" (as if that were an excuse for being out of every single vegetable on the menu by 6pm). This is typical for Xanterra -- never an apology, always an excuse. So why is this restaurant better than, say, the Old Faithful Inn or Mammoth Dining Room? Because it's larger, with more vegetables and other choices (when available. The Shrimp & Grits are actually good. The vegan bolognese is serviceable and not overpriced. And dishes like the mediterranean plate and caesar salad that appear at other Xanterra menus seem to be done better here. But be careful ordering. Substitutions are made without telling the waiters or the guests. Many dishes (including side vegetables) are spicy when they are not advertised as such. And portions are all over the map. For example, one night we had two of the premium-priced entrees: The $45 scallops were barely an appetizer (3 scallops and a sickly corn-topped risotto). The $55 duck plate was loaded with enough duck and potatoes to feed an army. Yeah... I was going to give this place 3 or 4 stars for being better than others, but honestly . . . still 2 stars because of the shortcomings and the attitude. If this restaurant were in a city, it would fail FAST.

We arrived a little late - about 30 minutes before it was going to close done after lunch. That was probably fortuitous, because the park was super crowded that day and if we had come at the height of the lunch rush we probably would have had to wait. Instead, we were taken to a table right away and our very nice server was soon at our table to take our order. Two of us got their chicken sandwiches, which were a bit on the dry side. One of us got the lobster sliders, which are described as consisting of lobster and seafood salad (read: imitation crab meat/surimi). It was less lobster and more seafood salad, but wasn't bad. I got the crab cake sandwich, which I found to be actually pretty well-executed. The cost of our meal, without any drinks, was a little under $100 before tip. Yeah, that was more than we hoped to spend but it was better than eating the Clif bars and trail mix that we had in our backpacks. And special thanks to Lily, our server, who was cheerful and friendly and chatty and made this a positive experience.

One of few venues that would take reservations of this size group. They have a good amount of indoor seating. We sat on the umbrellaed patio, near the musician, just around the corner of the bar from games like cornhole. They were busy, but service was attentive. Many of us had craft beers and cocktails. Everyone was pleased, but i could not list all the beverages for you. We had at least one yummy fresh arugula salad with sirloin cooked-to-order and a lot of flavorful bacon, blue cheese crumbles, green onion, tomatoes, balsamic glaze, and thick "Texas" toast. We shared a number of the many appetizers: Crispy-coated sweet-chili Thai Shrimp were rather small but quite tasty. The tray of nachos was a glorious mess of beans, sauces and crema, mixed melty cheeses, olives, and meat ... i think we got the rich ground "buffalo". The "buffalo balls" were even messier: meatballs in deep gravy over mashed potatoes smothered in sautéed onions and mushrooms. We had "chicken "bites" with two of their yummy flavorings. The soft pretzels and cheese were long thick almost-loaves. And i completely lost track of the mains: several of their loaded burgers and overloaded tacos. The star was the 12oz medium-rare ribeye, topped with herb butter & demi glacé, loaded garlic redskin mashed potatoes, & thick garlic toast. This was a great immersion in great food, drink, ant atmosphere. The $44 ribeye was one of the top-two steaks we had during our trip. (July 2026). Pro tip: every steak is town was good, even the bargains you can find with a little hunting. But be sure to pay a little more once or twice to get the best.

The waitress was nice and had personality but was a bit stressed out and a little testy after we asked about our food 30+ mins after ordering it. Even the drinks took a long time to be served.
