Our server was an absolute sweetheart, and this restaurant in Old Faithful really stood out. A real restaurant not focused on burgers and sandwiches, that doesn't require booking reservations 30-60 days in advance? I'm in! FOOD: A reasonably broad menu with real food on it, emphasizing game meat in a number of cases. I had a tasty boar ragout, a nice Caesar salad, and some great onion rings for apps. Elsewhere around the table were trout, bison tartar, and duck ravioli apps. Everyone enjoyed everything, including the cocktails. SERVICE: Friendly and helpful. AMBIANCE: Classy contemporary Western decor, a definite upscale feel. The prices, of course, were high -- four of us, with apps and a couple of drinks, came in at $350 -- but I didn't feel as resentful here, given the quality of the servings, as I have elsewhere in the park. Pro Tip: Because this is one of the only upscale restaurants in the park that doesn't require (in fact, doesn't take) reservations, it's good to get there about 15-20 minutes before its 5pm opening to get in line at the desk. Net-net, will definitely tag this place to eat at during our next vacation at Yellowstone. read more

I wish I could give a better rating for an in-park restaurant, realizing their limitations to fresh and locally sourced foods. The Obsidian Dining room does not take reservations for dinner. It made it difficult to wait the one hour time frame we were given before they could seat us. What we chose to do instead was to zip over to the Old Faithful Lodge's cafeteria style dinner. This building is one of several venues in the Old Faithful Village not to be confused with the historic Old Faithful Inn but it was a walkable distance away unless you have mobility issues. Dinner was finished there and as we were heading back to the Snow Lodge our pager went off. We decided to go check it out and have a salad and maybe a dessert since those choices were pretty lacking at the cafeteria. The staff were very nice, I think they get a bit embarrassed by how long they have to tell people they need to wait for dinner. I had a post meal Caesar salad, my husband had the House salad and actually counted two pieces of cherry tomatoes, no other vegetables, just the two bitty tomatoes. The portions were small and covered with croutons. For dessert we tried their Vanilla Bean Creme Brûlée Cheesecake with a crispy baby oat crust. I did not see why they called it creme brûlée but I did taste the oat crust which was different. If you like interesting decor this dining room has some unique fixtures and the seating areas were spacious, with warm accents. I'm so glad we brought our own bottle of wine, as the wine selection, there was limited to nothing we would probably drink. The best part of the whole thing was there was no corkage fee for opening our bottle. We ordered the Bison Tartare, which my husband likes, but I did not at all. our second choice was the charcuterie tray, with four types of wild animal sausage. Only one of the four, but it's good, and it did not come with cheese or much else. There were three sauces, two of them were mustard, and they were OK. The absolutely worst thing that we ordered was fried elk ravioli. It was God awful. The service at the bar was fine, but I can't tell you about any of the drinks since we had our own wine. We did not eat anywhere at Yellowstone in the Old Faithful area, that was even a little good. it is really too sad as it is such a gorgeous area bring in a little better food and it be perfect. read more

Saw that the Obsidian dining room was open until 10 pm, and that they had bison short ribs! We decided to bite the bullet as it was kind of expensive and the reviews for the restaurant weren't that good. We ordered at the entrance of the restaurant, and they gave us a buzzer and told is to go into the reception area to get our food. The employees were all wearing masks and gloves, and were super nice! We got 6 ribs total with mashed potatoes and a side of veggies, and 4 pairs of eyes watched as I took a bite, and at the first sign that it was delicious, promptly devoured the rest of the meal. Our consensus was 4.8/5! Delicious, but definitely on the pricey side, but this is top-notch gourmet food AT A NATIONAL PARK!!!! We would have gotten it again if time had allowed. We had the expectation that everything in the park was going to be mediocre, and while we did experience that in some places, this meal was not that; it was great! We ended the meal with the caldera lava cake and it too was great. The coffee was the only thing that was mediocre but we had been forewarned about the coffee. On top of a great dish, we had an outstanding server; Mo from kentucky was top notch! She was kind, bubbly and genuinely interested I. What we had seen in the park & where we were headed next. This (Obsidian Dining room) is a sit down, order from the menu, no reservation restaurant for dinner and a buffet for breakfast at Old faithful Snow Lodge in Yellowstone. NOT to be confused with the cafeteria at Old Faithful Lodge or the dinner buffet at the Old Faithful inn! As at all of the parks on our 21 day roadtrip-the employees were all quite friendly but a bit less efficient at Obsidian. The breakfast buffet was horrible--(we had granola bars in the room for our second breakfast). The potatoes were raw and the eggs dry--maybe get some covers for the serving pans!!! Our first dinner was quite good--bison short ribs and quail were both very good. Dinner #2--we had a wait so we visited the lounge next door and had a drink and "duck wings"--actually quite large legs--excellent and almost a meal on their own. At dinner I tried the elk ravioli--horribly dry/over cooked and not a good flavor (and I have been eating elk my whole life). Wife liked the lentil soup and salad. Prices not cheap but much more affordable than "The Inn" and not cafeteria food like "the lodge". read more

Monopoly leads to bad service. Since you have no other places to go, you just have to accept the worst. Made a reservation, almost an hour later we still can't get seated. While we watched some "friends" of the reception lady just sneaked in with a reservation that is for 3 hours later. We politely requested the reason (perhaps race related since we are not her white friends), but a very arrogant manager came out, started with "what's your problem" and essentially told us "either wait or fxxk off and starve". At that point we were shocked, just cannot believe such words can come out of someone in hospitality business. But since he had the point - he can indeed kick us out and we would have nothing to eat - we did not continue with the conversation. I would recommend the burger place next door before they close (we missed it unfortunately), just don't come to this place for dinner. Will pack some instant noodles next time, better than waiting here helplessly. And guess what, they don't offer to go. Eventually after our dinner, I feel very sorry for our waitress, who did an excellent job and does not deserve this one-star rating, but because of the terrible treatment from reception and the manager, I really couldn't rate it higher. They ruined the whole experience from the beginning. I also feel sorry for the kitchen. The reception lady blamed the delay entirely on the kitchen (the reason she told everyone). But her behavior of letting people in earlier than their reservervation time added significant extra burden on the kitchen. I would speak for the kitchen since these hard-working people would never know what they were blamed for behind their back. read more

Stayed at the Snow Lodge for two nights in May, 2023. Ate at the cafeteria one evening. Not so good. Passed on the Obsidian dining room since no menu items we would eat. Did have breakfast buffet one morning. Scrambled eggs were cold, french toast like cardboard, potatoes were rock hard and old. Coffee was great. Would not recommend food purchases in Snow Lodge. Felt sorry for tourists arriving and having little choices for food. Expensive as well. Can't the concessionaire get it right? read more

Back in May, my family and I ate here when we visited Yellowstone. And as a vegan, I really enjoyed the Gardein sausage dinner. Our server was really helpful in ensuring that it was 100% vegan, and I couldn't be more thankful for their help. I think what's great about eating in Yellowstone besides being around the flora and fauna is that the servers are professional and serious about their work, and our server sure proves it. We stayed at Old Faithful for three nights, so we were stuck with this restaurant for three days, totals six meals. The food here is very inconsistent and generally mediocre at best. At worst, we choked down food because we had nowhere else to go. We ordered the French onion soup and the sweet potato appetizer twice, one time the soup was really good and the sweet potato was super dry, the other time the soup was not warm enough and the sweet potato was excellent. We had pork osso buco, pork chop, bison burger, mozarella ravioli, and salmon tostada for the main course. The pork chop and salmon were way overcooked - we think that they cooked them long time ago and left them in the warmer for five hours. Otherwise they can't be so dry like that. I couldn't eat the salmon edges because they were too dry, my knife won't work. The bison burger was thoroughly cooked on one half and pink on the other. The ravioli wasnt fully cooked and came in a soup broth. Everything we tried had something obviously wrong with it. On the third day, we really didn't want to eat any of their food but no choice. This monopoly makes the food quality worse. We loved Yellowstone but couldn't imagine staying another moment because of the food here! Breakfast buffet was ok, nothing special. We also tried their omelettes, which were ok. The simpler things were better, bit even those things weren't consistently good. We never found anything we liked after dining here 6 times. Service can be slow, inattentive and forgetful but staff are friendly. We had to make reservations for dinner three months ago. On the third day when we wanted to eat earlier than 8pm, they won't let us get in early because they were so booked. So, make sure you make reservations four months before you get here, or just bring your own food, which we will do next time. read more

My friend chose this place for dinner on our last night at Yellowstone and I gotta hand it to him for choosing a great place! Located in the Snow Lodge in the Old Faithful area, the Obsidian dining room is one of the nicer dining options available in Yellowstone. We were quickly seated and it was almost a full house at 7PM. They give you free bread and butter along with these awesome crackers spotted with herbs and seeds. Game sausage sampler came with 3: wild boar sausage with cranberries, smoked bison bratwurst, pheasant and chicken sausage. My favorite was the boar, being juicy and slightly sweet followed by he bison. The pheasant and chicken was a bit boring to me, but my friend enjoyed it saying pheasant is normally dry and this wasn't. I loved the braised red cabbage the sausages sat on and we both agreed the whole grain mustard was bomb. Polenta fritter itself was disappointing - hardly any taste of the garlic/onion and it was mushy sitting underneath the portobello and other veggies. It was kind of hard to cut up and eat, but I still l enjoyed it overall. Would probably pass on this. Bison short ribs were the star of the show! My friend is a great cook and it is VERY rare to hear him give a compliment on food. You could see the excitement in his face when he pressed his fork into the bison and it gave way like nothing. "Amazing" were his first words and after trying a bite, I had to agree. Perfectly cooked! We ended the night with a huckleberry white chocolate cheesecake and made it a la mode. I'd definitely pass on this as it tasted like it was refrigerated for way too long - I'll have to give their boozy dessert drinks a shot next time instead. Overall, solid but pricey food ($80 for the two of us), with quite a few options for game meat if you want to be adventurous. Service was good - water took a while to be refilled at times, but the food came out quickly and timely. Those short ribs alone are reason enough to come back! read more

After exceedingly long buffet lines and a couple of poor meals at another Inn nearby, we discovered the Snow Lodge Obsidian Dining Room. The evening menu features mostly local Western food, like bison, wild boar, lamb, and you can find chicken and Alaskan salmon. Every dish comes with potatoes. The portions are large. The morning meal is order off the menu breakfast items or a buffet. This restaurant is relatively small, 120 seats. No reservations, first come, first served. It is worth the wait; there is a bar and/or a seating area adjacent to the dining room where you can relax while waiting. The wait staff was friendly, engaging and efficient. Of the nearby dining options available, the Obsidian was by far the best choice for food and service. read more

Be prepared for a long wait!! Located right near Old Faithful, this restaurant was packed full of people. Even though we faced a long wait, the servers were very attentive once we were shown to our table--great service! We started off with the smoked salmon wontons and the lamb sliders. Both were amazing, but the sliders were the real star of the show! I ordered the boar tenderloin. Thought it had great flavor, it was unfortunately over cooked. My wife ordered the prime rib and thought it was very tasty. My daughter ordered the braised lamb, and it was just falling apart when I stole a bite--that's how tender it was! read more

I ate dinner here, during my first night at Yellowstone. Our table was pretty clean, and the employees were kind, especially Ola, a Polish exchange worker. I ordered a lamb pasta, which tasted good, but not especially good. The lamb was a little tough, but otherwise good. The service is relatively fast, and your water glass is always full. It has a nice atmosphere, and it is beautiful inside. Two days later, I ate breakfast at the buffet. The buffet food was passable, but not that good. If I return to this lodge (I am more likely to go to Lake Yellowstone Lodge if I return) I will eat dinner here, but I will not eat at the breakfast buffet. After a spectacular day walking around the Old Faithful area, we were expecting a tasty meal at the Obsidian Room. The menu looked great. We were seated fairly quickly and received water in a reasonable time frame but the food took FOREVER to come (and our waitress disappeared after taking our order and we didn't see her again until the food came). At that point, the other three people in my party got their food but I was told someone took my burger by mistake and they were remaking mine. I specially asked if it would take as long as the first part of the order took and our waitress said "no." She lied. It did. The rest of my party was done eating by the time my burger arrived. At one point, I tried to cancel the order and was told (not by our waitress but by one of the hosts passing by because our waitress had disappeared again) that it was almost done. He lied. It wasn't. The burger was ok but certainly not worth the hour and a half wait. The waitress half heartedly apologized for the delayed burger but didn't offer to bring me anything else while I waited, nor did she offer any $ off for the inconvenience. I noticed that others around us were taking forever to get served as well. I was so disappointed. Don't waste your money. Go somewhere else and get a better meal and better service. In fact, we had FANTASTIC service and good food at the diner in the Old Faithful General Store a few days later and it was a fraction of the cost. read more

The overall service was slow, but the server very polite. We ordered waffle fried potatoes, boar tenderloin, and peanut spicy sauce linguini with salmon. The potatoes were fine. Although the meat of boar maybe was good quality ($30), the overall entree was average. The spicy peanut sauce linguini with salmon: A wannabe thai style sauce on Italian pasta, with a poor quality salmon, which does not make any sense to be there. As with the other dining options in the park, the Obsidian lacks individuality. We had dinner and breakfast there. Both were serviceable but not spectacular. Even with 6 in our party, there were no home runs. I had the grain pancakes and bacon for breakfast. While I expect a heavier texture with a grain based cake, this one was extremely dense and doughy. At dinner, I went with a lighter meal of French onion soup and a Caesar salad. If blindfolded, I would never have been able to identify the soup. It was thin and flavorless. I smelled the shrimp on my husband's salad as it approached the table. Shrimpy gross smell! Husband said they were fine but smell did me in! All was expensive which is not surprising since you are a captive diner in the park with very limited options. Service was excellent. read more
