    Caesar salad

I wish I could give a better rating for an in-park restaurant, realizing their limitations to fresh and locally sourced foods. The Obsidian Dining room does not take reservations for dinner. It made it difficult to wait the one hour time frame we were given before they could seat us. What we chose to do instead was to zip over to the Old Faithful Lodge's cafeteria style dinner. This building is one of several venues in the Old Faithful Village not to be confused with the historic Old Faithful Inn but it was a walkable distance away unless you have mobility issues. Dinner was finished there and as we were heading back to the Snow Lodge our pager went off. We decided to go check it out and have a salad and maybe a dessert since those choices were pretty lacking at the cafeteria. The staff were very nice, I think they get a bit embarrassed by how long they have to tell people they need to wait for dinner. I had a post meal Caesar salad, my husband had the House salad and actually counted two pieces of cherry tomatoes, no other vegetables, just the two bitty tomatoes. The portions were small and covered with croutons. For dessert we tried their Vanilla Bean Creme Brûlée Cheesecake with a crispy baby oat crust. I did not see why they called it creme brûlée but I did taste the oat crust which was different. If you like interesting decor this dining room has some unique fixtures and the seating areas were spacious, with warm accents. The dining room was well appointed as was the rest of the lodge.

I'm so glad we brought our own bottle of wine, as the wine selection, there was limited to nothing we would probably drink. The best part of the whole thing was there was no corkage fee for opening our bottle. We ordered the Bison Tartare, which my husband likes, but I did not at all. our second choice was the charcuterie tray, with four types of wild animal sausage. Only one of the four, but it's good, and it did not come with cheese or much else. There were three sauces, two of them were mustard, and they were OK. The absolutely worst thing that we ordered was fried elk ravioli. It was God awful. The service at the bar was fine, but I can't tell you about any of the drinks since we had our own wine. We did not eat anywhere at Yellowstone in the Old Faithful area, that was even a little good. it is really too sad as it is such a gorgeous area bring in a little better food and it be perfect.

Bison short ribs with mashed potatoes and veggies

See bison, eat bison Bison short ribs, 4.8/5!!!! Fall-off-the-bone tender, really good flavor, perfectly seasoned and paired with creamy mashed potatoes and steamed veggies! Very very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food, and felt like it was worth the price! ---------- Stayed in Snow Lodge last week and we got there around 9:30 pm looking for food. Saw that the Obsidian dining room was open until 10 pm, and that they had bison short ribs! We decided to bite the bullet as it was kind of expensive and the reviews for the restaurant weren't that good. We ordered at the entrance of the restaurant, and they gave us a buzzer and told is to go into the reception area to get our food. The employees were all wearing masks and gloves, and were super nice! We got 6 ribs total with mashed potatoes and a side of veggies, and 4 pairs of eyes watched as I took a bite, and at the first sign that it was delicious, promptly devoured the rest of the meal. Our consensus was 4.8/5! Delicious, but definitely on the pricey side, but this is top-notch gourmet food AT A NATIONAL PARK!!!! We would have gotten it again if time had allowed. Next time though!!

Bison Tartare was fabulous. Wild game burger was juicy and cooked perfectly (not too gamey). Bison short rib was super lean and tender. Service was quick and friendly. Cider was limited selection, only cider on tap was not good.

Ate here while visiting Yellowstone; the trout was absolutely delicious. No reservations accepted. We were 3rd in line when the restaurant opened and waited an hour to be seated. The restaurant is inside beautiful Snow Lodge so it was a lovely place to wait in.

We stayed at Old Faithful for three nights, so we were stuck with this restaurant for three days, totals six meals. The food here is very inconsistent and generally mediocre at best. At worst, we choked down food because we had nowhere else to go. We ordered the French onion soup and the sweet potato appetizer twice, one time the soup was really good and the sweet potato was super dry, the other time the soup was not warm enough and the sweet potato was excellent. We had pork osso buco, pork chop, bison burger, mozarella ravioli, and salmon tostada for the main course. The pork chop and salmon were way overcooked - we think that they cooked them long time ago and left them in the warmer for five hours. Otherwise they can't be so dry like that. I couldn't eat the salmon edges because they were too dry, my knife won't work. The bison burger was thoroughly cooked on one half and pink on the other. The ravioli wasnt fully cooked and came in a soup broth. Everything we tried had something obviously wrong with it. On the third day, we really didn't want to eat any of their food but no choice. This monopoly makes the food quality worse. We loved Yellowstone but couldn't imagine staying another moment because of the food here! Breakfast buffet was ok, nothing special. We also tried their omelettes, which were ok. The simpler things were better, bit even those things weren't consistently good. We never found anything we liked after dining here 6 times. Service can be slow, inattentive and forgetful but staff are friendly. We had to make reservations for dinner three months ago. On the third day when we wanted to eat earlier than 8pm, they won't let us get in early because they were so booked. So, make sure you make reservations four months before you get here, or just bring your own food, which we will do next time.

My friend chose this place for dinner on our last night at Yellowstone and I gotta hand it to him for choosing a great place! Located in the Snow Lodge in the Old Faithful area, the Obsidian dining room is one of the nicer dining options available in Yellowstone. We were quickly seated and it was almost a full house at 7PM. They give you free bread and butter along with these awesome crackers spotted with herbs and seeds. Game sausage sampler came with 3: wild boar sausage with cranberries, smoked bison bratwurst, pheasant and chicken sausage. My favorite was the boar, being juicy and slightly sweet followed by he bison. The pheasant and chicken was a bit boring to me, but my friend enjoyed it saying pheasant is normally dry and this wasn't. I loved the braised red cabbage the sausages sat on and we both agreed the whole grain mustard was bomb. Polenta fritter itself was disappointing - hardly any taste of the garlic/onion and it was mushy sitting underneath the portobello and other veggies. It was kind of hard to cut up and eat, but I still l enjoyed it overall. Would probably pass on this. Bison short ribs were the star of the show! My friend is a great cook and it is VERY rare to hear him give a compliment on food. You could see the excitement in his face when he pressed his fork into the bison and it gave way like nothing. "Amazing" were his first words and after trying a bite, I had to agree. Perfectly cooked! We ended the night with a huckleberry white chocolate cheesecake and made it a la mode. I'd definitely pass on this as it tasted like it was refrigerated for way too long - I'll have to give their boozy dessert drinks a shot next time instead. Overall, solid but pricey food ($80 for the two of us), with quite a few options for game meat if you want to be adventurous. Service was good - water took a while to be refilled at times, but the food came out quickly and timely. Those short ribs alone are reason enough to come back!

As for the food, given that most reviews were bad, I gambled and had a Cesar salad and the salmon with Cajun sauce since I was staying at the hotel and wanted to relive my childhood visit. The salad took too long to show up, especially since I was the first group for dinner. It was 3 times the size of Yellowstone Mammoth Restaurant, but not as good--did not finish, Cesar dressing is the problem . The Cajun sauce on the salmon was tasteless and the salmon boring, BUT the rice it sat on was Cajun and spicy enough to make the main dish acceptable. The rice won the meal by adding it to each bite of the salmon! All were served warm, including the green beans. Desert was the LavaDivine Fudge Cake. It was dry and needed the whip cream on top and on the side to make it worthy of being called a dessert. I ate it all. Was it worth the $57 before tip? Yes and no. Yes, because I'm on vacation at a famous hotel conveniently located downstairs. No, if I was back in Houston at a restaurant trying to claim class. I'll be back again if I stay at the Old Faithful Inn in the future.

I arrived around 7 PM and grabbed a seat at the bar since I was dining solo. The restaurant was busy, but the atmosphere was welcoming and comfortable. For dinner, I ordered the Chicken Prosciutto Pasta with a side of bread. The pasta was outstanding -- easily one of the best pasta dishes I've had in a long time. The combination of braised chicken, prosciutto, mushrooms, tomatoes, roasted red peppers, and creamy parmesan-mascarpone sauce came together perfectly. Every bite was flavorful, rich, and satisfying without feeling heavy or dry. As someone preparing for a half marathon the next morning, it was the perfect carb-loading meal. I also ordered the Huckleberry Sundae for dessert. If you're visiting the Yellowstone area, do yourself a favor and try something with huckleberries. The ice cream, topping, and whipped cream were fantastic, and it ended up being one of my favorite desserts from the trip. One unexpected bonus was getting to chat with other travelers at the bar, including another runner who was also working toward completing a half marathon in all 50 states. It added to the friendly, welcoming feel of the place. Overall, Madison Crossing Lounge delivered excellent food, a great atmosphere, and a memorable dining experience. I don't hand out many five-star reviews, but this one earned it. If I'm back in West Yellowstone for another race or a visit to Yellowstone National Park, I'll absolutely be returning. Nice amount of veggies, potatoes and together with some eggs a great start into the day. Hikers special was also good, just some eggs with bacon, toast and fruit salad. Solid option. For dinner the burger was good, the crab cake sandwich was ok (would have liked it to be a bit bigger though), fries were ok. Clam chowder was actually quite good, especially if you crave something warming. Fish and chips were ok, but the batter is a bit too thick I would say. Lobster Mac and cheese was ok, cheese was just a bit too runny for my taste. Don't order the panzanella salad. It comes with a few pieces of focaccia which are cold and dry. Also avoid the huckleberry martini. Tastes like cough syrup. Pretty bad. For desert the lemon cheese cake was pretty good, but don't bother to add ice cream. Before ordering the scallops, I asked the water if the scallops were good, that I don't like poor scallops. He confirmed they were 3 large scallops, that the scallop dish had improved. In fact, the woman seating us said the same thing when I asked her, that the scallops had improved over past days. Instead, I received 4 scallops that ranged in size from medium, to medium small, to small, to very small. I tried the small scallop and it was very overcooked and rubbery. The waiter agreed the dish was unacceptable and exchanged it for the eggplant dish. So both my partner and I had the eggplant dish. The eggplant was mushy through the majority of it, but not on the edges. Mediocre quality. The gumbo soup was quite good. The onion soup was passable as it had little broth given the quantity of onions and almost no bread. In short, we expected much higher quality main courses at the dining room and it was poor quality. The waiter apologized and offered excuses of supply issues, being open only about a week, and power failures. But we believe the dining room has a captive audience and so does not focus on quality, which is very disappointing. My partner discussed our very poor quality (aka horrible) meals with his friend who stayed in Yellowstone last year. His friends ate at the dining room and also said the food was terrible. The positive is the ambiance of this historic hotel is serene and beautiful.

They are pretty much all huge historic dining rooms serving overpriced mass banquet food. We stayed here 3 nights and the Dining Room at Yellowstone Lake Hotel is NOT a great restaurant by any means, but if you get your timing right, it is better than it's other brethren. I say timing because this restaurant is thankfully no longer a buffet, yet they are often out of menu items, even as early as 6pm. When I asked the restaurant manager why, he said they get food deliveries daily, but "we serve 500 covers a day" (as if that were an excuse for being out of every single vegetable on the menu by 6pm). This is typical for Xanterra -- never an apology, always an excuse. So why is this restaurant better than, say, the Old Faithful Inn or Mammoth Dining Room? Because it's larger, with more vegetables and other choices (when available. The Shrimp & Grits are actually good. The vegan bolognese is serviceable and not overpriced. And dishes like the mediterranean plate and caesar salad that appear at other Xanterra menus seem to be done better here. But be careful ordering. Substitutions are made without telling the waiters or the guests. Many dishes (including side vegetables) are spicy when they are not advertised as such. And portions are all over the map. For example, one night we had two of the premium-priced entrees: The $45 scallops were barely an appetizer (3 scallops and a sickly corn-topped risotto). The $55 duck plate was loaded with enough duck and potatoes to feed an army. Yeah... I was going to give this place 3 or 4 stars for being better than others, but honestly . . . still 2 stars because of the shortcomings and the attitude. If this restaurant were in a city, it would fail FAST.
