In 16 years in Marshfield, I've hired dozens of contractors. I would recommend three or four without hesitation. Cape State Heating stands atop that list. A little background: we've lived in our current house for 16 years, having replaced the original electric heat with forced hot air in our first year. That installation was horrible, turning a cramped crawlspace into a war zone that you could only traverse on hands and knees. At least twice each winter, the furnace failed. For years, I longed for a compact and reliable hydronic system with enough zones to help control fuel costs. When our previous contractor, who to their credit had patiently serviced that awful system for all those years, told us we needed to replace the furnace, we called out for bids on a completely new system. Our previous contractor came to our house but neglected to contact us again with a bid. We weren't inclined anyway. Another contractor insisted on shoving 50,000 BTUs of heat in our cathedral living room though we'd insisted we didn't use that room in the winter, were planning for a large pellet stove, and only wanted backup heat. The salesman was arrogant, telling us a house like ours deserved an expensive heating system, and quoting exactly that. But the elements of his quote were identical in all important respects to the far lower Cape State quote. We selected Cape State and they did a far better job than our first contractor. Paul and Mark were earnest and hard-working from the day they arrived, the anti-salesmen you hope for. They spent over six hours examining the house and talking to us before submitting a quote. No one else spent much more than an hour. They walked us through the Mass Save rebate process, preparing all the paperwork. I got the feeling they'd be as painstaking with a two-bedroom ranch as a six-bedroom McMansion (our house falls somewhere between). Paul and Mark personally supervised or performed every aspect of the work on-site. They installed the oil tanks and boiler on oversized concrete pads, well beyond the code requirements. When a problem came up installing the new oil tank because of a short foundation wall, Paul worked with me to pick substitute tanks that both fit the space and met our needs for long-term environmental safety and reduced cost. Later we found an oversight, a missing item, on the original quote. With another contractor that surely would have led to a dispute. Without my asking, Paul volunteered to cover the cost of the item at no charge. Their obvious intention at all times was to please the customer and deliver a quality product, always for a reasonable price. I can't say enough about their honesty and their energy, and the results show in every aspect of the installation. We haven't yet used the system (it was installed this past spring) but for the first time, I'm looking forward to the winter. If he ever gets an oil truck, I'll be first in line to buy from him and I'll get my neighbors as well. read more

We recently hired Paulo and his team to update our furnace, hot water tank and add central A/C in our home. From the moment that Paulo walked into my home I was very impressed. I had had other contractors come in to give me an estimate. I had spoke to Paulo over the phone and explained what I was trying to have done. He came into my home and had pamphlets and materials related to the discussion we had had on the phone. He was very thorough explaining the process to me and how the furnace and hot water tank would work, using the pamphlet as a prop. It was very easy to understand. He was able to come back within a short period of time with an estimate that was similar to what we had spoke about in person. On the day we had agreed to begin the work, he and his crew arrive promptly and got right to work. He had promised we would not be without heat for the evening and worked over 12 hours to ensure he kept his promise, and even completed the hot water portion so we could have hot water. He returned the next day to tie up loose ends and finish the work. He and his crew were extremely professional and I believe even left my basement cleaner than when he arrived. I called Cape State on a Sunday morning because my Goodman furnace (2.5 years old) was not working. Paolo talked me through getting the exact error code off the unit and what it meant. Once he had that, he knew exactly what to check. He had me check the fuse on the circuit board. And sure enough, that was blown. It just needed to be replaced and the system should start up again. Its been running great ever since. Paolo was very courteous and helpful even though he did not install my system. He took the time to answer all of my questions and even gave some recommendations on making it more efficient. I don't write reviews often, but when you get help from someone who is both friendly and knowledgeable, you need to give them credit. I now plan on having him help me install 3 wifi thermostats. What great things you read about Paulo are true. I first called Paulo in January 2013 when my heat shut down. He was here in a few hours and readily fixed the heating problem with reasonable rates. I was delighted. Today, June 1st, 2013 my AC quit. It is 93 degrees. Again, Paulo was here within a few hours and fixed the problem, again with reasonable rates. I don't think you can find a more accessible, competent, reasonable and personable heating/cooling anywhere. There really are some excellent service people who are reliable, professional and honest. I was very please with the service they provided with replacing an old furnace for me. Paulo spent about an hour and a half in the crawlspace with me trying to figure out what was wrong with the old one and getting it operational until we could put the new one in.
