Amazing staff and wonderful doctors! My mom had two surgeries with Dr. Nazari, and we were deeply impressed by the level of expertise and professionalism from this outstanding team. I visited Capital Eye Consultants when my wife had an appointment with them and decided to make an appointment for my own because she was happy with their medical services. This was on 12/11/24, but I made the appointment far in the future (for 3/12/25) because had a plan to travel overseas in January or February. As you may guess I lost the track of the appointment until 2 days ago (on 4/20/25) when I received a bill from them charging me $40 for No Show fee. I called the CEC and told them that while I blame myself for not keeping a good record of the appointment, I see some faults of your own because you did not contact me about it. The lady answering my call told me their computer report shows they've sent me 2 text messages, respectively one week and 24 hours before the appointment. So I checked my text messages and couldn't find a trace of them. I called back and said that "look, I really want to renew my appointment because need some evaluation of my eyes." The lady put me on hold and consulted the issue with her supervisor and their accountant and the final answer was that, "OK, you can make another appointment but after you pay this $40." I thanked the lady and hung up but then I thought this is unfair because I really didn't have any reason to lie about the text messages. If I didn't want to show up to the appointment and had received only one of the messages, I could've called them and cancel it instead of not showing up and spending more time calling them twice. The fact is that the time spent on the phone is not considered much comparing with 90 minutes that I spent to file a complaint with the Commonwealth Of Virginia, Department Of Health Professions and now writing this lengthy review on YELP. read more

I have accompanied both of my senior parents to CEC over the past year for their Macular Degeneration. The one who has wet was diagnosed 7 months ago and Dr. Gauthier's injections have reversed the MD. The one who has dry however is very advanced MD, and there is not much they can do, and was even referred by Dr Crossan to the NIH. BOTH doctors have a wonderful warm bedside manner. My wife and I recently finished having cataract procedures through Capital Eye Consultants. The experience was exemplary. The practice is very well organized and run. The staff, from top to bottom, are highly professional. They have developed a process over the years that is efficient and effective. They are thorough without wasting time, either theirs or the patient's. We never were late for an appointment, and we never had to wait longer than ten minutes to be seen. The reception personnel are business-like without being distant. The junior medical personnel are efficient, thorough, and obviously highly trained. (The practice is one to which prestigious educational institutions send students to train. That should tell you something.) The onsite doctors (Dr. Powers and Dr. Mattern) are happy to discuss and explain all aspects of the patient's condition and options for effective treatment. My wife and I were completely informed of our relative conditions and available treatments. No questions were left unanswered. Dr. Baldinger conducted our surgeries and the results speak for themselves. Our vision is better by far than we would have believed possible at our advanced (70s) age. I don't understand the negative reviews that a few have posted regarding this practice. It's hard to tell what people expect or hope to find in a medical practice. Maybe some want new friends or special handling. The fact is that the people at this practice are very nice but they also know the human eye and have a system that has been developed over years of practice and works for all patients, not just a few. I sensed in a few reviewer comments some confusion over the roles of the three doctors. Drs. Powers and Mattern are Doctors of Optometry. They diagnose the problem and recommend the level and type of treatment and care before and after surgery. They are terrific. Dr. Baldinger, on the other hand, is an ophthalmologist, an MD. He performs the surgeries. He is not "warm and fuzzy," but he is a highly successful professional who has a long record of delivering outstanding results. I honestly don't care whether he wants to be my friend. If you need cataract surgery, this is the place to go. The surgery isn't life-saving, but the process required is long and somewhat complex. It takes effort on the part of both the practice and the patient. This practice has done whatever it could to make the process efficient, thorough and error-free. I needed cataract surgery I have the exam I meet with the schedule coordinator to arrange my surgery date 2 or 3 weeks in advance everything is good with my insurance Aetna I prepay my copay and deductible over $1000.00 about 3 days before my surgery date they call me to say the surgical center is out of network with Aetna and I will have to pay $3000.00 to have my surgery performed. I am wondering how it was not discovered earlier since a coordinator checked on my insurance coverage 2 weeks before. I explained I did not have that kind of money available. I was told my appointment would have to be cancelled because this was such short notice they would charge me a cancellation fee of $150.00 Which they subtracted from my prepaid amount when they issued a refund check. I was contacted later with an invoice for about $50.00 I did have my cataract removed with eye doctor of Washington much better healthcare providers. read more

If I could give CEC a zero I would.I had an appointment yesterday for a pre cataract surgery evaluation.The intern who began my exam was pleasant.It was all downhill from here.When I entered the office I let the staff know that I had breathing problems due to a severed facial nerve from a car accident and asked if I could lower my mask when I got to a private room in the back and informed staff that I had both COVID 19 vaccinations over a month ago.I was told that I couldn't do that in the waiting room where other patients would see and might be uncomfortable.I explained that I was not! asking if this was an option in the waiting room and wouldn't want to make anyone uncomfortable.Trying to give the staff as much inf as possible I also informed them that it has always been difficult to put a periferal IV in my arm as my veins are very deep and small.I mentioned a way that a ARS thesis could be given that would make this easier.When I was told that they couldn't do this at the outpatient surgical center and that I would have to reschedule surgery at another facility I was understandably a bit anxious to se start the lengthy (3) hour evaluation again.My eyes had already been dilated. The bottom line is that I cannot get an appointment with the new Dr for over a month.That is not the issue. I called the office when I got home and stated that I didn't have enough eye drops to span a month.I was told at that time that I was being discharged from the practice for not"following protocol " and that I needed to get my eye drops elsewhere.I was shocked. The staff was nasty, curt and unempathetic.A patient sitting next to me remarked, unsolicited that she found the staff "curt , nasty and always in a rush".I merely listened to her. This behavior was unethical at best and clinically put me in an unsafe situation as my dry eye disease is severe.F.For new patients if you uses CEC it is this writer's opinion it is at your own peril. I had been a patient at CEC for 10 + years and am extremely disappointed at their lack of compassion and inability to understand my mitigating circumstances.At no time did I take off my mask while inside the office so as to not break the protocol I was unfairly and incorrectly accused of violating. As a retired nurse, I have worked with many doctors and their office staff over the past 30 years. Never was I so very impressed with an entire practice than I was with Capital Eye Consultants. Everyone from the receptionist, to the optometry techs to Dr Baldinger were quite professional during their time spent with me. All tests were explained to me in detail before being done. Everyone greeted me with a smile and introduced themselves. It's clear the staff enjoy working at Capital Eye Consultants..Dr Baldinger had done my cataract surgery 3 years earlier, and I knew I could count on his outstanding expertise. I My experience with the doctors and staff of the Capital Eye Consultants for over five years is highly positive. I never had to wait too long. Quite the opposite. If I arrive earlier they will start the steps of my visit earlier. The doctors and staff are all very friendly. Once a doctor gave me samples of an expensive drops so I could wait to buy once my insurance started. Since most of the time my insurance doesn't cover their service, I never felt that I was overcharged. Comparing with other medical practices they are a bargain. I'm from Arlington, Va, not from SF. My VPN places my IP to a location different than my physical one. read more

This is by far the worst staff I've experienced in my life. I know the doctor is good and he'll do a great job for a cataract surgery. However, the staff, especially the surgical coordinator, is absolutely horrible. They do not know how to break down costs, won't tell you how numbers are generated, and just come up with a total cost, which was completely wrong, that I just found out, 3 days before the surgery. I cancelled my surgery, because the cost factor has increased dramatically, 72 hours before the surgery. Horrible, dishonest, and deceiving. read more

No complaints regarding the medical treatment. My two cataract surgeries went well. All preliminary measurements etc. are done by interns before you actually see a doctor who evaluates the interns findings. This is not the same doctor who performs the surgery. I saw the surgeon for about 30 seconds before the surgery. But what I think is bad practice is to ask for payment in advance. All my other doctors bill the insurance and then send patient a bill for the balance. Surgery is performed at a surgery center that also ask for $$$ upfront. read more

I don't know why the bad reviews. I had cataracts removed last May/June and laser on both eyes due to the scar tissues that sometimes forms. I have seen 3 doctors and numerous staff members and each one was professional, courteous, and all made my appointments pleasant. The doctors were all very nice and explained in detail all the procedures, the reasons for each and the follow up after each. The all spent time never leaving me feel rushed. Also, even though the waiting room usually had several patients, none of us had a long wait. I have highly recommended this practice to several people already. read more

I wish to God I could put in zero stars. First of all I am still happy with the work that Dr. Baldinger performed. But a doctor's staff can make or break a practice. We sent in a payment a month ago (and BTW I was just told by the HSA provider to NEVER send a debit card number though the mail). Other payments sent that day were processed, and previous payments to CEC using the same HSA card went though. To my shock and deep embarrassment, I just got a dunning letter from an attorney for the amount we sent in plus interest and attorney's fees. I'm going to assume that it was either not processed or lost in the mail. When I spoke to the office manager she made it very clear that it's my fault, it's my problem, and no - they're not going to help in any way. It would appears that sending in a payment's not enough - you have to make sure a company processes it. read more

I recently had cataract surgery on both eyes. Capital Eye Consultants did a superb job, from start to finish. CEC was not my optometrist's first recommendation. I went to that recommendation and they lasted one visit; they treated me, from the time I entered until the time I left, more like a number than as a patient. CEC did the exact opposite. From the first phone call to the last checkout, everyone (and I mean everyone) at Capital Eye Consultants treated me with the utmost care and concern. They were courteous, professional, and happy--a rarity in today's hectic insurance driven medical world. I would single out a few people if I could. But I can't. Everyone was superb. Use them. If I could rate this practice ZERO stars, I would. I am a physician in California and my mom has been unfortunate enough to be a patient of Dr. Wong's and a victim (Ok, maybe a little dramatic) of his indefensibly RUDE office staff. She's a little outside the demographic who uses Yelp, so I am writing this review on her behalf. What's wrong with this practice? "Let me count the ways": 1. Terribly rude front desk and office staff. They rolled their eyes when asked to make a follow-up (mom needed follow up for both retinal surgery and a lens replacement- the receptionist didn't understand that, or didn't care what my mom meant by "which appointment"), snapped when asked for a prescription and wrote "REFILL" and the names of the medications on the BACK of a BUSINESS CARD and told her to take it to a pharmacy- wtf (the Dr gave out samples only at the post-op follow up, so REFILLS aren't possible, but the office staff's response to that was "that's ridiculous, doctors don't give out samples at the follow up") and made the wrong appointment for mom so she ended up waiting TWO hours, with no apology, of course. 2. At the follow-up (made with the wrong Dr, since Dr Wong was still at Disney World), she was told by the jerk seeing her (one of Wong's partners) that she "never should have made this appointment" since he wasn't the one who did the surgery. Thanks, A-hole, maybe you should learn about how your office runs and how dysfunctional the front desk is. 3. In the group follow up with Dr. Wong (during which time he spent approx 20 minutes, for 10 patients) he used inappropriate language (hello F bomb) and actually told people not to interrupt him because he didn't have time for questions (he was in flip flops and his Mickey T, on his way to the airport). I could go on and on... but do I really need to? In short, if your insurance gives you the option, go elsewhere. read more

They should have a no star for this practice. After reading the reviews of others, my suspicions have been confirmed. My husband was referred to this practice by the practice that performed his lasiks surgery. After contacting them about our experience, they have decided to no longer refer patients to this practice. His initial appointment was scheduled for 2:00pm and we were not seen until 3:30. Apparently this is common because no one apologized for the delay. The testing was performed by a technician who was appeared to know her job; however, she was very short with us both when there were questions. As Rosalva P. stated Dr. Mattern was the best. He explained that my husband had cataracts in both eyes and odd shaped corneas. He recommended that we move forward with having the cataracts removed. We moved to the next phase of scheduling and filled out all of the proper paperwork. Since my husband had previous lasiks surgery, we were advised that if we wanted his sight completely restored, we would have to have the lasiks medical records. Otherwise, his sight would improve but not completely. With this in mind we signed a release for the Lasiks providers and scheduled both surgeries. The first surgery was scheduled for 8 days out. The next day we received a voicemail asking for the lasiks medical records and they emailed my husband stating that if he didn't have the records to them the following day by noon they would cancel his surgery. This was strange because during the scheduling we signed the release for them to obtain the necessary records. My husband works in a secure environment and did not receive the email. He followed up on the voicemail and called to make certain to tell the Rachel (who scheduled the appointments) that he wanted to move forward with his surgery. He tried Rachel for two days straight and there was no response. It was almost as if they were ignoring his calls. With the thought that we were moving forward on day 8 we headed to the surgery center over an hour away from our home only to find out that the surgery had been canceled and no explanation was provided. When we returned home and spoke with Lilian, the office manager. She stated that she sent an email over a week ago and that was sufficient notification. We explained that we had tried to reach Rachel and no one would return our calls. Lilian stated that she owed us nothing, she was very rude and explained she didn't have a boss to answer to. Basically, she advised us that she had the upper hand. When we expressed our frustration, she hung up on us. We attempted to reach Dr. Baldinger to no avail. I guest common courtesy doesn't fit into his schedule. Meanwhile we called our Lasiks provider and they referred us to Dr. Roberts. Dr. Robert's staff scheduled an appointment for my husband immediately. They were patient and explained everything in great detail. During the evaluation, Dr. Roberts himself oversaw the testing. After the evaluation he advised my husband that his problem was bigger than cataracts. In addition, there was corneal damage. My husband is now set up for several surgeries to repair his corneas. After he has recovered from these surgeries he can have the cataracts removed. We are both happy that this happened; however, the experience with Capital Eye left us frustrated. The staff was rude and insensitive. Not to mention, that two weeks later someone called to confirm the second cataract surgery after the first was cancelled. They are unorganized do not genuinely care about their patients. My advice would be to stay away from this large impersonal practice. They appear only to care about the money and not the patients. read more

I honestly don't know how to feel about this practice...We came here years ago with my mom, who had a dramatic increase in eye pressure and needed an opthalmologist's care ASAP. Our optometrist at the time, sent us here. We had initial positive experiences during the first appointment with Dr. Mattern, who to this day, I still see as the kindest doctor at this practice. However that is where the good part of this review ends. As it turns out, my mom needed a laser procedure that only Dr. Baldinger knew how to perform at the time. When we stepped into the room for the procedure, he did not greet us, or even bother to ask how my mom was feeling. He gave her strict instructions and became frustrated when she flinched a few times due to his lack of explanation about what was happening. When the procedure was over, he stood up, and left. Not a single word. We came to find out later that the laser had not penetrated deep enough to correct her problem. Step in, Dr. Wong. At the time he was extremely kind and patient, although he was not as experienced with the laser procedure he stepped up and my mom left happy, with her condition under control. Fast forward to July of 2015. Five years after the first procedure my mom had another occurence of the same problem in her other eye. When I called the office, frantic that her eye was drooping and she was in excrutiating pain, the receptionist refused to issue an emergency prescription that she had years earlier, however they begrudgingly fit us into the afternoon schedule. Again, we saw Dr. Mattern, and my mom requested Dr. Wong because of the positive impression he had left on us during her last visit. I'm not sure what has happened to this practice in the five years that passed by before this second incident. Since then, the receptionists are not welcoming, they seem annoyed by scheduling conflicts, and are very curt. Dr. Wong, has also changed. He performed the laser procedure again on the other eye, and during follow ups was very distant and sometimes downright rude. The last visit we had was about two weeks ago, the problem returned even after the procedure and we scheduled an appointment at their earliest convinience. By the time we made it to that appointment the symptoms my mom had been experiencing on/off had reduced. Dr. Wong saw us for all of 3 minutes, told her he couldn't do anything if she had no symptoms, and shut her file. He discontinued her prescription drops, and when she asked, in her broken English, if she really did not need them, he snidely remarked that her "English was good all of a sudden". I attempted to address a glaucoma concern from her optometrist and before I could finish, he interrupted me and said "she won't be seeing me anymore, follow up in 3 months with Dr. Mattern or Dr. Powers" We have decided that we will not be returning here, and will find an opthalmologist closer to home. We have come to the conclusion that this practice has changed considerably since we were there last. If you really need a quality opthalmologist, ask for Dr. Mattern. If not, find another practice. Patients deserve to be treated with respect and need to be heard when expressing concerns with a specialist, however most of the doctors here do not have the time or patience to do either of those things. read more

Yeah, I'm so far not too impressed with this place. But mostly my issue is with the receptionists. Twice so far, they have told me they couldn't schedule me for varying reasons (server was down one time, need to check with the doctor the second time) and that they would follow up with me in a few hours, and they never did. Wow - are they so busy and making so much money that they can't bother calling a client? Also, when I showed up for my first appointment , the receptionist/nurse tells me that the doctor I need to see doesn't come on that day. I was pretty pissed. This place is far from my work and I pretty much wasted an entire afternoon for this appointment. What's worse is that I specifically told the receptionist exactly what I needed when I booked my appointment, and should have booked me on the day the ONLY DOCTOR that does what I needed is actually there. Kate M seems like she had the same experience - receptionist has booked the wrong appointment - so if you need to not waste an afternoon, you might want to double check/triple check and possible talk to other people on the line. Oh and get this on my last appointment, which was supposed to be at 830, the doctor is 1 hour late. I specifically scheduled the 830 appt because it was the first of the day, and I wanted to get to work as early as possible. As it turned out, a friend of mine saw the same doctor that morning. They booked both of us the same appointment!! 830!! Wtf. And when I went to check on my appointment at around 9am, I was told there was 1 person ahead of me, which wasn't my friend. How did I know this? Well sleuthing after my appointment when I talked to my friend about who he saw (there's only one female eye doctor there). And also, while I was waiting to meet my eye doctor, I could hear muffled talking in the office next door. And when that appt finished, I saw the patient walk out, followed by my doctor. Um no. Waiting over an hour for what is supposed to be the first appointment of the day is absolutely unacceptable. How the heck does that happen?? I made it to my appointment in time, my appt is supposed to be the first of the day, and somehow there are two people ahead of me??!! Yeah no. Their system is a mess. Are they like the DMV? They schedule multiple people in 1 time slot? RIDICULOUS. As for the doctors themselves - I don't have any complaints so far. They seem to know what they're doing. But we'll see. **** UPDATE **** I talked to a receptionist about double-booked appointments and my last experience. Apparently, it's their STANDARD PRACTICE to double-book doctors (maybe it's only specific doctors but I'm not sure). It doesn't explain how my last appointment was TRIPLE BOOKED, but in any case ... patient beware! I'm only coming back here, because I've started on this path and I happen to like my doctor. I can not say enough about my experience with Capital Eye Consultants! Over the course of one month I was able to be seen, diagnosed, recommended for Cataract Surgery, treated and corrected. I had been goin to CEC for the past year because I had some pressure in my eye and a mild headache and some sign of posible glaucoma.I was attended by Dr. Baldinger & I sensed Dr. Baldinger was very cold and abrupt and had no patience to answer my questions and a racist. I did not like his bedside manner and I switched over to Dr. Powers which I thought had excellent bedside manner. December of 2019 I happen to called to confirm my appointment to just make sure I had it on my work calendar for the next six months and I was told that my appointment was canceled. I asked why and Leigh Ann Crouse, the worse and nastiest office manager I have ever come across in my entire life told me that they sent me a letter that I had a past due of $53 that I had not paid yet and that until that was paid I could not come back; apparently my insurance covered its portion & I told her that I had just come back into the country and I was sorting through my mail and I didn't see her mail.I finally found the correspondence and I called the attorneys that now were handling the late charge and I told them that I will pay them on 31 December. Dr. Baldinger performed laser surgery on my eyes that changed my life significantly for the better. I am forever grateful to him. During my follow up today, I had another really positive experience. The time from my call to schedule an appointment to the appointment date was less than one week (which I think is better than most dr offices). I arrived right at the time of my appointment. I filled out some paperwork and was called back within 20 minutes (also very reasonable given my experience at other doctors). The first person I worked with ran a number of tests on my eyes. He was delightful and took time to explain what he was doing throughout the process. When he finished, he stepped out to speak with the doctor and within 5 minutes, I was joined by Dr. James Mattern. Dr. Mattern was very nice and took his time explaining the status of my vision in both eyes. He answered all of my questions. In the end, his recommendation was very positive (stop wearing my glasses and contacts) and not to have the laser surgery again. I would highly recommend Dr. Mattern, as well as CEC. They have state of the art technology and provide the highest level of care. read more

I would have preferred no stars but one is the worst on Yelp. My complaint is with the staff and their lack of customer service. I had schedule eye surgery and because my phone died, I couldn't confirm the date until I got home 10 minutes after I left. I immediately called to confirm and left a message. Didn't hear from them so I phoned again. After three attempts I actually got a human and they said my surgery had NEVER been scheduled. So I scheduled it again and they said a week before they would let me know the time. They called me last week and left a message. I called them 4 times and never got a return call until I told them I was going to cancel and make sure the doctor who was to perform the surgery knew it was because of his incompetent staff. From the first time I was in there, I did not have a good feeling and the fact that they never scheduled the original surgery just really made me question if I felt comfortable having them touch my eyes. I will find someplace else to go where patient care is of utmost importance from the receptionist to the scheduler to the physician. read more

My wife and I have both received care here, and have no complaints at all about the professionals from whom we were treated. I was initially surprised at some of the extremely bad reviews of Capital Eye Consultants, but after our last visit, I think we will not be coming back. My wife had a mid-morning appointment that we had scheduled during our previous visit a couple of weeks before. We signed in about 15 minutes before the scheduled time and had to wait about an hour before she was called in. When she got in the back, she was told (matter of factly) that the doctor with whom she was scheduled wasn't there. They told her which days of the week he worked and sent her back out to reschedule (without so much as an apology). We were, to say the least, a bit shocked. First of all, why did they schedule her on a day when the doctor wouldn't be there? Second, if they even bothered to look at their appointment schedule ahead of time, why did no one call us to change the appointment? Finally, after we signed in upon our arrival, why did they have us sit there for an hour before telling us (essentially) to get lost? I don't understand all the negative comments about this business. I initially called them because my 87 yo father in law ran out of glaucoma drops (assisted living couldn't manage to tell us this in advance). The staff bent over backwards to get him in. Once there, they took us 10 min early and all the staff was very caring and patient with him (he does not like the tests involved). I forgot his ID but had a picture of it. They let me email it. Over and over they showed caring and were everything I could have asked for in a practice. Nothing was a problem, at all. Based on my experience, I'd say ignore the negative reviews from 6 months or more back. We had Dr. Mattern, who was great. Dr. Wong has wonderfully repaired a retinal tear I suffered on the last day of September. His continuing care of me has brought my eyesight back to where it was before this incident. read more
