I agree with one of the other reviews, that Max is a great stylist but just not for your trendy/modern cuts. I think clients who want more of a conservative haircut is his speciality. I wanted to slightly change my hair up and max helped with that, but I just don't think it's worth the $55 (excluding tip) that I paid for a side buzz and chopping a bit off the top - which took less than 30 minutes. I normally go to a shop in Eastern Market (Jajo) who tend to do a great job at maintaining/cleaning up your existing haircut for a very decent $30 and serve a variety of clientele (styling both modern and conservative haircuts). read more

Max is unquestionably the best barber I've ever had, period. Let's be honest: it's not hard to find an okay barber in D.C./NOVA. There are a lot of people who will cut your hair in a sort of rushed, "one-size-fits-all" way and charge you $50+ for the privilege. Max is not like that - he's professional in every sense of the word. Seemingly within seconds, he identified not only what I wanted to do, but issues with my hair that it took me years to learn myself. He recognized where I had problem spots with hair, that I was using the wrong kind of product, what kind of hair would work with my face/length preferences, etc - and BAM, he went to work quickly and expertly. I've had worse experiences paying $60+. Max is also extremely polite, easy to talk to, and courteous about your time - all three things that are pretty rare in D.C. After years and years of trying different barbers and salons, and never being satisfied, I have finally found the holy grail of men's hair cutting. I frequently have bad luck in my life, so I'm sure that Max will soon announce that he is picking up and moving to the west coast, so I apologize in advance to all of his loyal customers. It is very clear that Max knows what he is doing. Before my first haircut with him, he explained what he was going to do and why, and then proceeded to give me the haircut I've been trying to get other stylists to give me for years. I made my next appointment before I left, and I can honestly say I did not have one bad hair day in the four weeks between appointments. I recently had my second appointment and got the same great haircut. I'm not sure if I've ever been able to get the same haircut twice in a row from anyone else in DC. Max is also very friendly, very professional, his station is clean, he uses scissors and a straight razor (not a clipper cut). Max is great! I have lived here for several years, and I've not had a barber that I was committed to going back to each haircut. Normally, I have just gone to one in Arlington on the weekends when I head out there for a Costco run. I decided I wanted to do a little research to get a quality haircut a few days before my wedding. After looking on here, I found Max. Max did an excellent job. He did not rush through the cut. He explained what he was going to do after I gave him an idea of how I wanted it to look. It was perfect. Even though my cut is fairly simple, I was so impressed. I received numerous compliments on it (one was from another barber that I took a groomsmen to the next day to get a shave). Not only did he do an excellent job, but it only cost $30 (plus tip). I just want to say, first off, that Max is an excellent hairstylist. I've been to him on three different occasions, and every time he's given me one of the best cuts of my life. So why 3 stars? Well, the last few times I've contacted him to schedule a haircut he hasn't responded. Now, he usually has his scheduler do the booking, so it might not be solely his fault. But, that's just poor customer service. And in my opinion, it's very rude not to respond to a customer who you've had a past relationship with, and who wants to stay loyal to your business. Max is really good at cutting hair. I have been to him 5-6 times and each time my haircut has been very consistent and Max really takes the time to make sure the cut is even all around. The real downside is scheduling. Max is popular, and for good reason. He gets booked several weeks in advance, and this had been getting worse each time. The first time I went I was able to book my next appointment a month out. Now you almost have to commit two haircuts out. If you have any uncertainty in your schedule 2 months out..well you just need to find another place to get your haircut. In addition, he is often running a bit behind, so you are often waiting (I guess 10-15 min extra isn't so bad after you waited several weeks?). Get an earlier appointment if you can since he is still on schedule in the mornings. Honestly, this place is a steal at the price, but because of it there seem to be people lining up months out.
