Linwood is the man. Black men and barbers have a very special relationship. It cannot be explained. Changing barbers is DIFFICULT. I haven't been to a DC barber in over 20 years and the last 10 years, Russians have been cutting my hair. Today, I needed a cut and I walked in to Popular Cuts. I had to sign in, but the shop was empty. One guy in the chair getting a cut and two barbers relaxing. I sat in the chair, told him what I needed and he started to work. The music was right up my alley and the conversation we funny. I only listened. I need to concentrate on my scalp and beard. He showed me a little and asked if he was on the right track. THANK GOD HE WAS!!! After a few more directions he was done. I walked out a happy customer. The price was right and I went on my way. I must ask them to dilute the sea breeze because I forgot how strong that stuff is. Otherwise, go here, ask for Linwood. Tip him well, I did. read more

Called to set up appointment guy told me I would t need one. Walked in place was empty besides gentleman at front desk who said nothing to me and just kept starring at his phone. Another gentleman was half naked in changing in the back corner. I had to get the gentleman's attention at the desk who just mumbled for me to sign in. Clippers we're dull fade sucked and the dude was taking cell phone calls while he was cutting my hair. $32 for the worst fade I've ever had. Over priced . The place is gross. read more

TLDR: Haircut was good, and but that's about it. *Be careful with pricing /appointments*. Wouldn't recommend. When I walked in there were no other customers and one barber in the back. Good -- should go quick. Except no one cared I was there. A few minutes later, I found a paper sign in book and signed in. The barber then acknowledged me and sat me down asking if I was a "walk-in appointment." I said yes, because I just walked in randomly. Throughout the haircut, the barber took 3 breaks for between 3-6 minutes going on his cell phone, presumably to check Facebook or text friends -- he never said why though. This was kinda annoying because I didn't want to spend longer than necessary on my haircut (on a professional level, I have never had this happen during a haircut). Anyways, the haircut turned out to be good. When it came to paying, it said $36 before tax. I could have sworn it was $30. Sure enough, at the bottom of the menu it said $30 for a shave AND $6 for an appointment. Remember how he asked if I was a "walk-in appointment"? Well, that's $6 lol. I didn't say anything because I wanted to get out of there, but I thought the pricing strategy was sketchy because then technically everyone has an appointment -- walk-ins and people who call ahead. So it should have said $36 on the sign. read more

I am not the type to go out of my way to leave bad reviews. In fact I hardly leave reviews at all, but I had to give a heads up about this place. I can't remember the last time I've been so disappointed in a haircut. First off, the guy's hand was shaking considerably the whole time he cut my hair. I can't say with certainty that was a factor, but it sure doesn't inspire confidence. What I ended up with is so incredibly far from what I asked for. One side looks 100% different from the other side, which can't really be fixed. A good bit of hair in the back seems totally untouched and a completely different length from everything else. I will say that it's a poor attempt at a style that seems to be popular right now so some guys might have less of a problem with it, but it's extremely far from the picture I showed as an example. This place is really close to where I live, so I gave it two chances. But it's just terrible. My second haircut was especially bad, as the barber took a five minute break in the middle of it to watch football. He didn't even touch my hair on top, until I asked him to cut it shorter, at which point he rolled his eyes, sighed, and clipped it in a few places, though not as short as I'd asked for. After that, he ended the haircut without even asking whether it was short enough. Despite that, it took forever, largely because he kept stopping to watch football or talk on the phone. My first time here, the barber was talking on her cell phone *while cutting my hair*. The haircut was still somehow not as bad as my second time here. There's a price posted on the wall, but they will decide to charge whatever. Both times I came here, they charged an amount different from their posted price. read more

Simply a bad cut. When I got back and looked closer, the cuts were uneven. Some areas where too short. Some areas were untouched. I think my barber was fine with the razor but the scissor part was very shaky, literally. I could tell by his hand motion he was very unsure. Can't praise any of them enough - each one was great, and I've never had a second thought about giving them a visit. My latest trip, Frederick probably gave me the best cut of the three. My office recently moved to Chinatown, and i was looking for a new barber shop. My hairstyle is pretty simple, so I prize convenience, speed, and price. Went as a walk in without an appointment in the morning. There was only one barber on duty and there was one person ahead of me, but the wait ended up being a bit long. When it was my turn the guy on duty was friendly, listened carefully to what I wanted, and was very polite to me. The end result? Exactly what I asked for, done well. Thought $24 was a bit expensive, but their rent is probably going up with all the new luxury condos around. Overall it was a good haircut in a good atmosphere, and will probably become my regular place. read more

The barber didn't blend the layers in my hair, the hair on one side of my head is significantly longer than the other, and it honestly gets worse the longer i look in the mirror. Personally, I've been going to Barrie for years, and I see the same people there all the time, regardless of race or hair style. And while I can only personally speak for Barrie's haircuts, his colleagues also have a high amount of regular customers that will only trust them with their hair. Needed a haircut while in DC and found Popular Cuts through Yelp! I will be honest as that's the whole premise behind what make Yelp! so helpful. This is an old school black barbershop that wasn't too far from the movies of the same name. I was the only white guy in the joint, but I felt comfortable and welcome the entire time. That said, if you're someone who's uncomfortable being the minority then this may not be the barber for you. This experience was replete with the street hustler stopping in to sell "his" iPad for cash only. There's even a pay phone on the wall but I don't know of it works or not! The calendar on the wall is stuck on September 2013 and the silky sounds of the classic soul countdown on SiriusXM completed the ambiance. I really enjoyed debating LeBron's return to Cleveland and whether or. It the Wizards or Redskins were making the playoffs - these delusional folks actually think RGIII is the answer! I was a little concerned that my haircut might not be that great but my barber Shamea did a great job. The cut cost $24 which is about $10 more than I'm used to paying at home in Florida, but all in all it was money well spent. Everyone made sure to welcome me back - even the regular customers. I have been getting my hair cut regularly at Popular Cuts since moving to D.C. three years ago. I am very picky about my haircuts. But when I find a good barber, I always keep coming back. Barrie does a tremendous job every time. He knows exactly how I want my hair -- I don't even have to tell him anymore. I just take a seat and let Barrie do his job. This is a great neighborhood spot. With all the real estate development that has occurred in Mt. Average haircut. The reason for the 1 star rating is how scummy the barbers here are. I came in asking for an edge up, and the barber said "do you mind if I fix up your fade?" Unbeknownst to me, "fixing up my fade" meant charging me for a full haircut, even though it involved less than 5 minutes work. read more
