I came in after using this shop once previously, and I had had a good experience. This time, the same could not be said. Before my scheduled cut, I had approximately 8" long hair that I needed to clean up to continue to grow. I selected the clean up service on their website and booked the same barber I used the previous occasion, Lena. Upon arrival I explicitly said I only wanted a cleanup on the back and sides, and further said I did not want anything taken off the top. She said she understood, and started with the back and sides. About halfway through I realized she was cutting far more than I requested, but I waited. Then she cut about 4" off the top of my hair, which I pointed as soon as she started and was told to trust the process because I would still have plenty on top. Now, not only is over half my hair gone after a "cleanup" visit, but I have what in essence amounts to a bowl cut with a fade. I will not be using this shop again and I am appalled by the service I received. This is quite possibly the worst hair cut I have ever had the displeasure of paying for. Asked for a Medium Fade...Got a High & Tight I came in asking for a medium fade and to leave the top long and she said "I got you." The barber asked if I wanted a low or mid skin fade, and I repeated mid. But as soon as she started cutting, I noticed she was going way higher than what I asked for. By the time I realized it, I basically had a high and tight, which I definitely did not ask for. I get it maybe she thought it would look "better," but I didn't come in for a surprise makeover. And honestly, I didn't feel comfortable speaking up. I didn't want to cause a scene and even if I did say something it was too late it's not like I can get my hair back. I feel like a lot of people can relate to that "just sit there quietly even though you're panicking inside" feeling at the barber's. The haircut wasn't totally awful, but it wasn't what I wanted. And for $50 (before tip!), it's kinda wild. I still tipped her because she was friendly, but at the end she told me it was "way better" and would "grow back nicer." When I got home and saw the back properly, that's when I really noticed how much it wasn't the fade I asked for. So yeah maybe they're nice people, but if you're particular about your cut, make sure they actually stick to what you want. read more

However, I've had two experiences now in which I made an appointment, showed up on time or early, and had to wait over 45 minutes while someone else finished up. I booked an appointment with the owner, Julian, specifically choosing him out of the list of barbers and looking forward to my first visit. However, upon arrival, I was informed that he wasn't available and that another barber would take my appointment instead--without any prior notice. First red flag. While the barber who cut my hair was kind, he clearly lacked the skills and technique of a modern barber. His tools were subpar, leaving me with multiple cuts and nicks around my head and ears. To make matters worse, my haircut was so uneven that I had to visit another barber to fix it. This review is mainly for Julian: If you're going to accept appointments, honor them. 3 Stars - Decent Experience, But Not Worth the Price I recently visited Signature Cuts & Shaves on U St. and appreciated the convenience of scheduling my appointment online. Since I came on the weekend, parking was free and close by, which was a pleasant surprise. I booked an appointment with Mustofa after reading his amazing reviews, and I can see why people speak highly of him. He was pleasant, welcoming, and professional throughout my visit. The barbershop itself had a great vibe -- lively music and plenty of laughter made the environment feel inviting. Unfortunately, there were a couple of downsides. The seating in the shop was extremely ripped, which took away from the overall experience. I paid $71 (before tip) for a low Caesar haircut. While Mustofa didn't do a bad job, the quality of the haircut simply didn't reflect the price tag. I couldn't help but feel slightly cheated, especially after noticing what others were paying for similar cuts. That said, after hearing Mustofa's story, I understood that some of the cost likely went to a good cause, which made me feel a bit better about the experience. For the record, I have no problem paying $71 for a haircut -- but at that price point, I expect a haircut that clearly reflects that value, along with amenities and service that elevate the experience. While I appreciated Mustofa's professionalism and the shop's positive energy, I'd recommend some improvements to better align the pricing with the overall experience. read more

Odai had to stay after closing to finish my haircut because he had to work on a walk in that waited for hours before me despite making an appointment. He was very calm and patient. He saved me for an event I had early in the morning. Everyone else was closed! He is awesome and deserves a lot of respect for staying after. Any other barber would just turn me away. Used SC&S on/off for about four months when I first arrived in DC. Finally settled on Mo who did a fantastic job with both my hair and beard, going about four times through Jan and Feb. After signing up for and receiving a beard trim, lady at reception (who was friendly on every other occasion) accused Mo of doing the sides and back of my hair - didnt happen. And then proceeded to try and charge me for a haircut. The full appointment was under twenty minutes, and Mo didnt cut (or ask to cut) anything above sideburns. I replied, very politely, that I wouldn't be paying for a service I didn't book or receive and was threatened with the police being called, called me a thief, and 'banned' me etc. Very very unsettling experience. Aside from this experience, it seems like all barbers in DC, they have varying quality of staff, and i experienced instances of booking, turning up, and then having to leave as they were 45 min+ behind schedule. However Mo was excellent, definitely best barber I've had in the city. read more

I hate leaving a bad review because the people who work here are so nice, but... I asked for the longest clippers possible (white guy here, so a 5 or 6), and just a quarter inch off the top. I asked that my sideburns be left alone. What I got was a buzz cut up the sides, and then maybe a 1/2 an inch left on top, with no blending whatsoever, and my neck was shaved with a straight razor and it was bleeding and irritated for 2 or 3 days afterwards. My sideburns were completely shaved off. This was the worst haircut I've ever had...far worse that Supercuts or Greatclips could ever be. I wanted to like this place but I can't go back. I'm giving this two stars because the staff seemed great...they just don't listen. read more

I've gotten my hair cut at this barber shop maybe 8 times over the past 12 months, and unfortunately my experience has been extremely hit or miss. Many of the barbers don't seem to stay employed at this location for very long. The first barber did an excellent job, but the next time I went in he was no longer employed there. I assumed this was bad luck and tried again, and unfortunately the new barber, who I believe goes by "G" did an awful job. The next time I intentionally booked an appointment on their website with a barber who wasn't G, but when I went in they told me I'd be getting a haircut with G anyways, even though I'd booked someone else. Again, the haircut was pretty bad. The third time I managed to get yet another new barber, and this woman did an excellent job. The fourth time I went in I reserved a cut with her, yet once again when I went in they randomly assigned me to a barber who wasn't her. This was how I learned their online booking system is pretty unreliable. Luckily I found another barber at this location who did a fantastic job - his name was Calvin. I managed to get 3 haircuts out of him before he told me he was also quitting. This brings me to yesterday. I thought I'd give this location one last chance. I booked online to get a cut from whoever happened to be available, and lo and behold it was G again. Unfortunately, this is one of the worst haircuts I've gotten in my life. I asked him for a very mild trim, just clean up the edges and shorten the sides/back/top *slightly.* He proceeded to cut the sides much shorter than I asked him to, he did a poor job cutting the top (it's very uneven), and he didn't even cut the front hairline (so I have hairs in the middle that extend way down my forehead). For some reason he also cut the side hairlines completely unevenly on each side - the sideburn on the right side of my head up through where it meets my hairline is cut probably half an inch higher or more than on the left side. It looks so ridiculous that I'm planning on just staying mostly inside for a bit until it all starts to grow back out. As he was giving me this haircut, he also said a bunch of bizarre things. He tried to tell me about the value of "semen retention" as you get older - it was an uncomfortable and offputting situation. So yes, that was the last time I'll be going to this barber shop. 2/5 rather than 1/5 because I managed to eke out a handful of good haircuts along the way. read more

My family and I were visiting from out of town and my son needed a haircut. I searched through many barbershops on Yelp hoping to find a good one near our hotel and came across Signature Cuts and Shaves. Because of the great reviews, we decided to come here. This shop did not disappoint and my son and I were very happy with his haircut/fade. Calvin was our barber and he did an amazing job! He asked my teenage son (who's very particular) what he wanted and he went to work. He was kind, very meticulous, took his time, and asked my son from time to time if he was doing ok and if he liked the cut/fade which he did. After he finished, he put a hot towel on my son's head and did a head massage. We were pleasantly surprised since we didn't know it was part of the service. In the end, it was a great experience and I highly recommend this shop and especially Calvin! Many thanks!! read more

I got a haircut from signature cuts during lunch time, no wait and was seated immediately. Barber started cutting my hair and it was a decent haircut nothing amazing. Maybe it was the fact that it took AN HOUR TO cut the back of my head. Then I told the barber like look man I have to get back to work, could he speed it Up and he said oh shoot and then didn't try to cut the top of my hair and then told me it was going to be $60. Worst haircut I've ever had! I cut hair myself and made sure to be super specific about what do do with my hair. I had a picture of what I wanted as well. I felt reassured when Gerric said "I got you" I'm very particular about my beard and 20 min into the cut this man takes off 1/2 of it down to the chin and then leaves the other half connecting at my mouth. It looked garbage and I told him to try and even it out. Then the fade was super uneven. I asked for a LOW FADE and I ended up with a .5 all the way up to my part with no type of blend on one side and a huge dark patch on the side of my head. A hot towel, was literally a towel put over my head, almost like he threw it on my head and it just landed and sat there...The barber did not even properly wiped the hair off my head, or give me a shape up.. It cost $50, and I revived a lazy fade cut that looks like a mom and pop store that I could have easily gotten for $20. I should have listen to all recent reviews and avoid this place. Going to have to spend money to get my fade fix Also, the owner, Julian has a long history of rape and charges with underage girls(in jail now). Go google it and it's disgusting. read more
