If it feels slightly pricey, remember you're in the middle of downtown. Every business has to charge a little more because the rent is expensive. I'm white, with straight hair. It really shouldn't be difficult to cut, but I have once again been proven wrong. First time and last time here. Let's talk about the wait. I don't mind waiting. I was told someone would be with me shortly. That's fine. About 15 minutes later someone emerges from the back, to take the next person. During my wait, a bum decides to come bother the shoe shine guy for smokes. There is a kid running around in the store repeatedly told by her mother (who is actually cutting hair and would subsequently cut mine) to sit down, or stop playing with things. On TV is Hip-hop house wives or some reality show with fighting, cussing (bleeped), and just overall shitty reality show drama playing. So of course everyone cutting hair is easily distracted by that. These were my signs. I should have left... The cut. Very simple. Two on the sides, and about a quarter inch off the top. Guys, always say a quarter inch off the top. I learned from a stylist years ago. Also, know your hairline--just in case your barber (like mine) has no clue what that is. You can always take more off. I apparently wasn't clear on this request. After an hour. A FUCKING HOUR! There was only about a quarter inch left--not taken off--LEFT on the top. Never trust a stylist that has to turn the seat around so you can't see the mirror. EVER. Never use a stylist that isn't as tall as you when you're sitting in the chair. I'm only 6', but I must have been the size of The Mountain from GoT in that chair. I made mistakes. I'm 38, I know better when getting a haircut. I should have stopped it 15 minutes in when I knew this was heading down a terrible path. After it was done, I wanted to punch the guy in the mirror I saw looking back at me. That's how bad and how much of an idiot I looked like. Straight out of Navy boot camp. I was having flashbacks of 20 years ago. I missed my mom... I didn't pay, but I'm rating this place as ultra high in price because I pity anyone that has to actually pay. It would have been $26 & up (according to the sign) had I been forced to pay. I feel like I should have been paid for time served and reparations. It was that bad. This was such a traumatic experience that I cancelled my date for tonight, and possible Thursday. If I were to walk in on a date that looked as drastically different from their pics as I do now--I would leave. I've had bad haircuts, but this is by far the worst experience ever. read more

Had a cut with Jeff, the tall barber. He gave me some of the history of the place, it has been around since the 30's and the barber chairs are original and quite sturdy. They must oil them regularly, because they spun as smooth as a freshly tuned bicycle headset. I didn't have to overspecify the cut (mine's pretty regular part) and got a clean up for $28, including an electric razor shave. They do wetshaving too, for $8, but I didn't have enough money in my wallet to pay for that (they're cash only). It's a great barbershop atmosphere and I found the staff friendly. Also they have a nice assortment of magazines, from GQ to Playboy. Only complaint was that Jeff was a little over-aggressive with the electric razor, for my taste. But the save and the cut get an A. I've been going to Wall's for years and would never go anywhere else. Dale cuts my hair and knows exactly what to do each time. The other barbers are great too. The charm of a no frills barber is sort of irrelevant if they can't get the basics right, which, in my case, they didn't. My hair is about the easiest cut you can ask for- shorter on the sides, longer on the top, done and done. Heck, I could probably do it if I could see the back. I told my barber to leave my sideburns the length they were, so you can imagine my displeasure when he spun me around and they were about an inch shorter. Also left with my hair drenched in some foul-smelling oily hair product. Had to go across the street and get paper towels from a bathroom. All that, and with tip (which wasn't exactly earned, but the guy's gotta eat) I paid $30 for a cut that I can't wait to grow out so I can have my regular guy fix it. read more

I walked in during my lunch break and was seated right away. Dale cut my hair. He asked what I wanted, was very attentive to details and precise. After they finish the cut they use a small vacuum to get all the hair off your collar and get the cut pieces off the back of your hair. It is a good idea. I'm not sure why more places don't do that. Everything that they could have done well they did. I was greeted by a cordial and polite man who showed great care in listening to what I wanted. He carried out the entire process with great care and skill, just by the way he put the sheet around me, fastened it around my neck, and wrapped the extra towel around so that no hairs would get caught inside, I could sense right away that this guy was serious about doing a good job and giving the customer the best experience possible. While getting my hair cut, I engaged in a little small talk with him. He told me that he had been cutting hair in that same barber, though they had shifted locations, for about twenty-three years now. After answering the question in a polite and sincere fashion, he proceeded to continue cutting my hair in silence. In front of me, mounted on the wall on the opposite side was a flat screen TV showing interesting news. At the end of it when he held up the big face mirror to show me the end product I was very pleased with my hair cut. I told him that it was fine and that it did not need further cutting, he was extremely polite and graciously appreciative about my approval. I happened to only have a hundred dollar bill and asked if they accepted payments by card since I did not want to inconvenience him to have to break it. And right away he told me that I could go ahead and bring the money back when I got the chance to draw it somewhere. So I informed him that a hundred dollar bill was all I had, he told me that was fine that he could break it for me. The price of my hair cut was supposed to be $25/- but because he did not have five dollar bills he ended up giving me four twenty dollar bills and told me that its fine. So I got charged $20. I found this barbershop by "accident." Because the traffic on my way to my regular barber was so bad, I decided to search for shops close to my job. Wall's was the closest one (within walking distance), so I decided to give it a try. Although appointments are preferred, they do take walk-ins, and I couldn't have been waiting more than 7-10 minutes before I got called into a chair. I don't remember what the name of the young lady was, but she did an amazing job on my hair. I described what I wanted, and she did a better job than anyone else who's ever cut my hair. This place made me look like I just joined the Korean Army for my 2-year service :( I know my numbers to make my hair look decent, and I gave em to the guy. Showed me what he was groovin' with 15 minutes later, was pretty good but I was like "ey man, trying to impress a lady, wanna just make everything a little shorter?" In the last two years, this is the only place in DC that I've gone back to twice to get my hair cut. Dale is a really nice guy and each time I've gone he's been very patient with cutting my hair, me telling him it's not short enough, and cutting some more. I will be happy to make Wall's my regular place to go. A men's cut is $23. As of 4/14/10 they have been at their new location on G Street for about a week. Needless to say, over the years, I've bounced from barbershop to barbershop trying to find a good barber that didn't cut my hair like a guys hair, or either just started shaving with the clippers like I'm a guy. Didn't get the whole experience at Wall's because i only went in for a shave. I had read on yelp that they did wet shaving for $8 so i thought that was a great deal and decided to stop by. Correction: Wet shaving costs $30. $8 gets you a clipper shave with an electric razor. I was a bit skeptical and not very excited to get this shave, but it turned out to be equal to the wet shave i usually get. Wasn't as enjoyable of course, but Curtis did it all in about 5 minutes. You get a bit of bay rum at the end too. Would definitely recommend the $8 shave if you're short on time and money. It gets the job done, but is not an experience like a traditional shave. read more

I've always been partial to female Barbers and have been looking for a while now however my search is over. I was referred by a professional friend to Walls Barbershop off G & 17th and told to look for the only female in the place. Don't let her size or quiet demeanor fool you as Makia is making things happen for brothers in DC. Women have always been good listeners and that is usually the biggest complaint about male barbers (Yes I did say I wanted those sideburns you just buzzed off) and Makia excels in that area. Having never cut my hair she was flawless with the fade and my request to have a little more on top to separate my look from the crowd. I was happy to ante up $25 for the cut & $10 for the tip to be remembered as she has definitely become my new Barber and I plan on referring as much business to her as I can. read more

Great barbershop in a super convenient location downtown, started years ago by Mr. Walls (a Tuskegee Airman who passed away a few years ago) now owned and operated by Dale. Wall's Barbershop fit that criteria then and continues to do so now. My barber is Jeff, and I will let absolutely no one else cut my hair. I have been to "beauty shops" where the hair dressers have no respect for your time. You make an appointment and if you are lucky, 4 hours later, you might be able to leave. NOT A WALL'S! When you make an appointment at Wall's, you are usually out in less than 30 minutes!!! Also, you can feel free to bring your kids at Wall's.
