DO NOT GO HERE -- my first visit and I won't be returning. the "stylist" did NOT discuss enough what I wanted and just did her own thing, taking my hairline way too far back and giving me a super blunt short cut. I've encountered this type of stylist before where if you don't give explicit instructions they will NOT ask any questions. these type of lazy barbers don't understand that they are altering something everyone will see when they look at your face and it is irreversible until your hair grows back. a good hair stylist puts time and consideration into making their client look and FEEL THEIR BEST. it was also ridiculously expensive and if she had an ounce of training or taste then she must not have cared about making me look good at all. anyone with a basic (let alone "professional") understanding of hair can see that she did a truly abhorrent job here. If you are going here for the first time, the physical layout of the shop can be a bit confusing to walk into, but just poke around and you'll find who you're looking for. Also - you should be willing to actively communicate what you want your hair to look like, or at the very least bring a photo of exactly what you're looking for, and if you do, Semecka can get it done. She's remarkably talented. She'll talk if you feel like talking, or won't if you don't. Just remember, like everything else in life, communication is important if you intend to get what you want. There's a reason John Lewis got his shaves here. The vibe is so chill & upscale masculine without being self-consciously trendy like those newer hipster grooming joints around Shaw. The master barbers are straightforward and relaxed in demeanor, while very talented, versatile, and precise in skill. Definitely worth their rate. I especially appreciate the charitable ways in which they give back to the community like providing haircuts for the homeless. And their excellent playlist that has me Shazaming and adding new songs to my iTunes every time. My only reason for not rating them five stars is that I had to fix my last cut at home, as it was completed by one of the apprentice barbers. It wasn't a catastrophic mistake, but I don't want to pay over $50 (or at all) for a cut that I didn't ask for, especially when I can cut it the way I like it at home. HIS Grooming is in my neighborhood and came with great reviews (and was more affordable), so I booked an appointment online a few days in advance. The website noted that women are welcome in the shop, too - they just specialize in masculine cuts. Semecka was incredible!! I've only just recently cut my hair short, so I'm still getting all the short hair terminology down and figuring out my preferences. Semecka listened to my rambling thoughts regarding what I liked and disliked about my existing cut, and checked in with me throughout the cut to make sure the length and feel was what I wanted. HIS is a truly refined establishment that I'm happy to call my local barber shop! After moving into D.C. from Alexandria, I began my hunt for a barber shop. I wasn't seeking luxury, but mainly an excellent (not just "good"--I don't have time for crooked edge ups or uneven sideburns) haircut close to my place. After trying every other potential barber shop on Yelp, I came to HIS Grooming Lounge. The first thing you'll notice is their website. It is laid out well and offers online appointment creation and cancelation. YES! Online appointment capability is a requirement for me because of my schedule, so this was a huge plus. When I went to the shop itself, I was immediately greeted and Ashley (who is awesome) took my coat, got me some tea, and made me feel right at home. Rick, my barber, may have fewer appointments than the other barbers but don't sleep on him--great guy, great barber. You're able to have good and engaging conversation here, and everyone just seems happy to be here. Yes, their prices are higher than other places. But you kind of get what you pay for. If you're looking to try out HIS but don't want to stomach the $50 for a full haircut, go for a $25 trim. You won't regret it! This place is legit. I looked around at other places, but they were either booked too far out or their system for scheduling appointments was confusing. Service at HIS Grooming was easy to book via their website. They were pretty full, but I happened to find one slot the next morning, which I booked. Their setup is pretty classy, let classic. I felt like I was in a man-cave salon meets old-school barbershop. Upon entering, you're met with a friendly gentleman who offers you a beverage (tea or water, if I recall correctly). This staff person also helps with payment after your cut, which is more efficient than the barber handling the transaction. They have a swipe machine for payment, which made everything clean and comfortable. The service was solid. I got a beard trim, which was reasonably priced. The barber did a great job. He was a little rough around the jugular, but otherwise I don't have any complaints. His skills were apparent, his demeanor professional, and his courtesy far exceeded the service I'm used to in the District. And the hair care products used can be purchased there on site. I'd highly recommend HIS Grooming to anyone in DC who wants to avoid the crowds in NW or the trek to NE. read more

Some details about the shop: -You are greeted you with your choice of water, red wine, tea while you wait for the chair. They also recently added staff to shampoo and condition your hair while you wait. -Lots of old school music R&B for your enjoyment. -Crew hair products of all types for you to purchase. Since I began with Justice, I've gone from having short hair to growing it out over the last year. The space is beautiful and feels very homey in the Capital Hill neighborhood. It was very easy to make an appointment online and the staff were all very welcoming. My appointment was set for 10:50 - 11:40pm and thought this would be enough time for me to get to a meeting across town at 12:30pm. I arrived right at 10:50pm and my hair stylist was still with his client and I ended up waiting for a good 15+ minutes. It seems like these haircuts usually take at least 60 minutes so perhaps they should start blocking off one hour appointments rather than 50 minutes so that clients can better plan their day and expect to finish up closer to the scheduled end time. I wasn't offered a drink until about 10 minutes after arriving since the receptionist person wasn't there when I arrived and I had to ask if there was anywhere I could put my stuff. When I pay $50 for a haircut, I guess I expect a little more service.. It seems like others have had great experiences with great customer service so maybe it was just today. But, I will say the shampoo and and face towel was very relaxing and well worth it; however, I wish the shampooing would happen after the haircut because you end up leaving with little bits of hair falling off throughout the day, which isn't ideal. These are nice guys with a classy establishment, but that's the minimum requirement for a haircut this pricey. I'm new to the neighborhood and was hoping to transition smoothly to a new barber after frequenting Hell's Bottom and Wise Owl Club in NW. I credit HIS for taking reservations, which isn't the case for Wise Owl. After visiting a few times that were largely satisfactory, my latest visit went poorly. I wasn't wholly comfortable with my cut but was willing to take the barber's (who I will not name) suggestion to ride with it. About two weeks later, my original suspicions were confirmed, and I called to see what could be done. They hesitantly made some time for a "clean up" appointment that day. To their credit, I believe they kept the shop open to accommodate my schedule. However, I was disappointed that they charged me a nominal fee for a ~10min visit, given that they were resolving an unmet need from my original haircut. I would be more comfortable recommending HIS were it not for the premium pricing. I don't blame the barber who gave me a haircut that slightly missed the mark. I've been with HIS Grooming every since it's inception. Jared was my barber at another shop several years ago, then he ventured out on his own to create and establish HIS Grooming. Like most men, I am loyal to a barber who cuts and styles my hair with a high level of consistency. Jared is that barber for me. So, it was an easy decision to stick with him and support his new journey in opening his own shop. HIS Grooming is a safe, clean, and comfortable hair care salon for men. The Pennsylvania Ave location is easily accessible even for those of us outside of DC. I typically find street parking within the block where the shop is located. The barbers/stylists at HIS Grooming are all professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Each takes pride in their craft and are committed to providing the best service possible. While they do take walk-ins, it's much better to have an appointment. I'm glad to have a regularly scheduled standing appointment that fits perfectly into my schedule. Now on the Friday night before they cancel on me and just send me an email. Not a we will find you a time here is what works. No phone call. Just an email. For years, I had never flown first-class. I would sometimes look at the prices for first class tickets and think "Who pays that much for a little leg room?" Then, on my first trip to Europe, I was bumped up from economy to first. I was led upstairs to a special section where, instead of cramped seats, there were pods that fully reclined. I was greeted with a sincere smile, a hot towel, and a menu of gourmet offerings. My glass of bourbon was never empty for more than a few moments, as the attendants were eager to ensure my every need was met. And long before I reached my destination, I got it. The difference between HIS grooming lounge and a traditional barber shop is akin to the difference between first class and coach. I wanted to look my best for a recent wedding, and went in for a head shave and beard trim. Was greeted by the friendly receptionist/cashier; she took my bag, led me to an exceedingly comfortable leather chair, and offered a beverage. I sipped my beverage, watched ESPN, and listened to the exceptional jazz playlist while Jared finished up with his client. When I got in the barber chair, I learned firsthand why Jared always gets such great reviews. He gave me a step-by-step breakdown of what he intended to do, the products he intended to use, and why he chose them. He asked specific questions about my scalp and suggested things that I could do to improve my home-shave experience. He then proceeded to give me the full hot oil, hot lather, hot towel, straight blade treatment. He took his time to get each and every follicle that had ever thought of growing on my head. It was the closest shave I'd ever had. When he was done, he trimmed my beard, then used the straight razor to really lock in the line. I walked out looking and feeling great. Is HIS a little more expensive than regular barbershops? Sure. But in the same way that Shake Shack is more expensive than McD's, Chipotle is more expensive than Taco Bell, and Chik-fil-a is more expensive than Arby's (I must be hungry), you're paying for a vastly superior product. This place is what the Grooming Lounge wishes it could be. The vibe is outstanding and organic, not forced and corporate. I was hesitant, but upon entering was offered my choice of beverage and had a chance to watch one barber studying every move the other barber was making on another customer. They'd discuss each cut they made and why it was done the way it was. These guys are serious about good hair and beard cuts, and it shows. They want to know what makes the cuts work, what is going to look best on each individual, and they appear passionate about constantly improving...even after possessing such a high level of skill. I'd feel 100% comfortable letting them suggest the best look for me, or trying to recreate a look I'm going for. I don't know anywhere else I've been to that I'd trust to receive as high a quality of attention to hair and beard. They are stylish, more than educated in their specialties, and even paying a salon price felt fair for the level of attention I got. Heck, the hair wash alone made me feel guilty for receiving too much attention. I'll also add I have the dreaded bald spot so many men are getting as they age, and this is the first place in my life I was able to look at the back of my head and still feel good about myself. After multiple attempts to get a decent haircut for less than $60, I saw that HIS Grooming Lounge was close by with good prices, so I gave it a shot - and how glad I am that I did. Firstly, while they're sometimes able to accept walk-ins, your best bet is to call and make an appointment. When you arrive there are refreshments waiting for you, as well as sports on the big screen TV, which is playing at a moderate level. My barber, Jared, was very attentive and meticulous even though I was getting what would be considered an easier haircut. I discovered HIS Grooming online and based my decision to give it a try on the pictures clients posted. The cuts and styles looked worthy of a visit, so I booked an appointment through their online scheduler. Easy. My barber/stylist was Logan. We consulted prior to the cut and he got to work on what I consider a challenging task. I, like most people, am particular about the hair. I don't follow trends and don't leave anything to chance. Logan listened and picked up on to the concept I laid out. (By the way, the shampooing station is AT the cutting station, so it's a very efficient process. The chair get turned around, reclined, and it's shampoo time!) The end result was spot on. My hair looks very good now and in a week it will grow into an even better look, I can already tell.
