One employee looked at me like I'd just asked if lumber grows on trees (spoiler: it does). The energy in this place is somewhere between DMV and post-apocalyptic Mad Max barter town, minus the charm. I don't know if they're trying to win the Rude Olympics, but if so, gold medals all around. You'll leave this place with your building supplies -- and a bruised ego. Honestly, I've had warmer experiences with IKEA self-checkout kiosks. Just when I think Carpinteria can't get any better than it already is I stumble upon this hidden gem. Hands down, new favorite place to recommend in town for anything garden or hardware wise. I have been on the lookout lately for low light indoor hanging plants, succulents, and unique herbs. Within 5 minutes of being at Carp Valley Lumber I found all of the above and more. When you walk into the parking lot and turn right to the outdoor garden area they have rows upon rows of gorgeous, healthy plant varieties. I spent probably 45 minutes browsing the "Succulent Salads" collections just to see all the different colors and varieties that there are in the world. I was extremely impressed with the widespread options with such a reasonable price. They even had lush hanging succulents placed in perfect lighting and not half dead like a lot of shops have them. The gal working answered all my herb questions, helped me find pots, checked the back-stock for me, and held my items as I went to my meeting. Very kind and genuine customer service with a lot of helpful knowledge on the plants they carry. The outdoor nursery area also carries garden decor, chairs, fire-pits, and things like such. They have plenty of plant food supply, pesticides, pots, bird feeders, fertilizers and other gardening necessities inside their little hut, as well. Make sure to check out the front right corner where all the air plants and hanging varieties are - it's a beautiful "jungalow" set up! I came for a succulent and left with three more plants and some pots. I even stepped inside the hardware store and bought a $0.98 ceiling hook (right as the power went out). Otherwise I would have shopped longer. I'm very happy with all my purchases, their prices, the parking lot, and the kind, knowledgable customer service. Definitely make sure to give this place a try if you've never been by. I mean how can you pass up a place that sells a Mint Chocolate herb plant that literally smells like Christmas in a plant? read more

I have lived in Carpinteria for 36 years and have frequented Carpinteria Valley Lumber many times for various things. I ALWAYS fear I will get the crotchety old man behind the counter to check me out. I try and be overly cheerful if I get him. However, I will not have to worry about that ever again, as my visit there last week WAS the last visit for me, my family members and some of my neighbors. I have a rodent in my condo and I desperately wanted to get some bricks to put at the bottom opening of the oven, and a trap. It was late in the day so I called the store and asked what time they closed. I was told 5:00. It was 4:45 and I live a few minutes away. When I got there it was 4:50. I said I needed a few bricks and a trap. I then asked if I could see a brick to see the size so I would know how many I needed. At that point Mr. Crotchety Counter Man said loudly over his shoulder, "I told you on the phone we closed at 5:00." I was a bit taken aback so I threw up my hands and walked out. I was furious to say the least, so went back in and told the old coot how rude he was and he repeated they closed at 5:00 (which it is now 4:55). He was helping another customer and he stopped to say "a brick is about this size" showing me with his fingers. I said some choice words to him and left. My point in this long explanation is to bring attention to "customer service". It maybe would have taken 5-10 minutes to get my bricks and trap and check out. Even if it took a few minutes longer would they have made me leave at 5:00 on the dot without my purchase? Customer service is customer service. This is a good hardware store and I would say very good for what is available here in carpinteria. There isn't really that much available as in it's a very small town city or village or whatever you want to call it. The guy in the paint shop gave me a can opener for the paint and I really appreciate it. Answered seven out of seven of my questions and was nice about it. Just purchased 50 feet (pre wrapped) nylon rope. Ended up being a little fatter than I need and took right back to exchange. With receipt, was unable to exchange for the correct size. I've lived in Carpinteria for 6 years. I typically enjoy this type of an "old school" hardware store and it usually has what I need at a bit of an inflated price. I understand that and not really a problem but I am growing incredibly weary of the rude, older gentleman that either manages or owns the place. Either way, his attitude or demeanor is completely unacceptable. Sadly, he's the only one who seems to know where the products are located. Just don't ask for anything beyond that. I would love to love this store but alas I do not. The employees do not wear masks, they smoke on site. They do not enforce the mask rule. It is convenient for us who live in Carpinteria but it is not a safe place. I do love their inventory but not their safety practices. What a shame and they should be embarrassed. read more

Rip off. My third trip here, past experiences have been okay but this time I asked for 8inches by 10inches of two inch thick wood and needed two slabs they charged me $25 for their "cheapest" wood....somehow that seems wrong, staff wasn't very friendly either. This place is amazing! I came in to see if there was anyway they would help me build a ramp for my motorhome. A mini staircase that I could drive up like a ramp.... As you can tell I know nothing about these things. The girl up front quickly set me up with her father, I am assuming the owner who sat me in his office, discussed with me, drew a picture of my thoughts and built it. All for under very little dough - wait there is more, I could not fit into my bike and he volunteered to drive them to me. Fantastic business I am planning to go back and buy some of their beautiful artichoke and other plants. LOVE this place they saved me!! read more

I love this place! They have the best selection of succulents I've ever seen and their prices are very reasonable. I was drawn-in by their beautiful garden department and ended up staying an hour just to make sure I saw everything. I took a basket of plants back home with me to Texas and they are all thriving. I love this place. I stop in many times a week just to browse their garden center and I always find something wonderful. The ladies in the garden center are continually updating the displays so there's something new to see every time I go. Recently- I needed something from the hardware section and the person at the front counter took me to the area to find exactly what I needed. Wonderful to have this resource in Carpinteria. Robert, one of the managers flat out lied to me and when I called him out became one of the rudest individuals I had ever had to deal with in a business. I went in and asked for a 3/4 thick by 3 or 4 inch wide poplar or alder wood for finishing work that my handyman asked me to get. Robert flat out said, " nope, all I have is pine". I asked further to clarify; "you have no hard woods for finish work?" he replied again looking me straight in the eye, "nope only pine wood." Ok, I took the pine wood for $10.50 for a 5 ft strip back to my handyman and I told him Robert said he only had pine. The handyman called Robert and guess what....for my handyman who does business there everyday....they do have Poplar, a hardwood available for. So I drove back (9 miles each way), and asked Robert why he said he only had pine to sell me. He became very rude and was a real jerk. Charged me an additional $1.50 for the poplar wood; no I apologize, no discount for the fact I drove twice to the store, nothing. Instead he said "Don't give me any attitude". So my two cents worth is this; if your not a good ol boy regular who goes in the store, you will be treated like crap and will be lied to. For the record, I have had this experience more then once there. You might as well go to Lowes and save the $$$, and at least they treat everyone the same. For a small town business, Carpinteria Lumber sure has an attitude. read more
