Extremely disappointing experience. I went in to have keys duplicated, and right away I noticed they didn't match the originals. I pointed it out before leaving, but the employee insisted they were fine and would work. I drove to the house, tried them and they didn't work. I went back and I was met with attitude .He seemed annoyed, refused to issue a refund, and just redid the keys. I gave it another shot, drove back again, and once more they didn't work. I tried to call and speak with a manager, but they hung up on me and stopped answering the phone. Really wanted to like this local shop, but I've had multiple uncomfortable experiences with the older gentlemen who works here. He is condescending and quarrelsome, often getting much too personal. He once refused to let me use Apple Pay, preaching about oppressive bank fees and "the big guys" stealing from the people, which was frankly unwarranted and unprofessional. Today, he followed me to my car and made me roll my window down to confront me for not making a purchase. Let's start with the fact that they have a small selection of products that are all significantly overpriced, to selling the wrong parts and refusing return. Next up let's talk about the fact that they have extremely rude employees that don't want to help you find parts or products. Additionally the employees are more focused on their phones behind the counter and monitoring the parking lot than they are on doing anything else. Inside it feels cold, unkept and unclean. Always very helpful. It's a small store but they vary a lot of different products. Everything from garden items, things to fix your plumbing issues, and even gifts and fun stuff for a man/woman cave. I moved to Santa Barbara 4 years ago, and, by far, the store at which I have shopped the most is San Andres Hardware! I LOVE this store. If you need an item they don't have on the shelves, ask Chris to see if he can order it for you. (He usually can.) Papa (the owner) is so nice, funny, and knowledgeable. When you walk in, you feel like you're in an old school corner store. No roaming around trying to find help or an item. Papa and Chris immediately know where everything is. You need just a nut or a bolt? No need to buy a whole box. San Andres has an entire section of "loose" necessities. Sometimes you pay more than you would at a big box store. But, most times you do not. Support a local store and local people. You will be glad you did! read more

Hard for me to believe anyone would give San Andres Hardware a less than stellar review!! Let's be clear, THEY ARE NOT HOME DEPOT or other big box hardware. They are not the Home Improvement Center, which has probably 15 times the square footage, they ARE a small locally owned, family operated, neighborhood hardware store. Kathy & Sean try to stock everything they can that we, their friends & neighbors, may need for household repairs and projects. Papa & Chris run the store, Chris knows more than any Home Depot store manager could ever hope to know and Papa, well Papa is Papa, kind as the day is long and always makes me glad I shop there. Sean is a contractor (great choice if you are thinking of remodeling) and Kathy raises 4 kids and manages all the businesses. But what, for me, & I hope for you, is the very best part... they are the ONLY locally owned neighborhood hardware store left in south county. Kathy tries really hard to keep it affordable and they are truly decent & kind people. Yes, I am obviously a friend and a fan...how did we become friends? Because, I started shopping at the hardware store shortly after they bought it, my good fortune on more than one level. No, they do not stock everything, although, I always see contractors' trucks in the parking lot but they rarely don't have what I need. I'll gladly pay a few cents more and hold on to one of the only locally owned small businesses we have left. read more

I've been here multiple times. High prices, not very helpful. Have told me on the phone that they have something, only to arrive and find that they didn't. The last straw was when I had two keys made. Neither worked. They won't give a refund, but tried to rework the keys. Didn't work on the second try, either. Decent enough local spot, but the inflated pricing and mediocre service leave much to be desired. I went in this afternoon to rent a carpet steamer. The shop is cute, tidy, and reminiscent of old-timey hardware stores which I enjoyed. There's a small parking lot out front and the decor was quaint as I walked in. Definitely a mom-and-pop vibe here. I'm all about locally-owned businesses but after my visit here, I think I will stick to Home Depot. When I walked in, I was directed to the area with the rental carpet cleaners. The prices printed on the display from Rug Doctor said one thing, but then the corresponding items had price stickers affixed - to the tune of a $1 upcharge. You wouldn't see this at Home Depot or even the grocery stores which also carry them. What's the reason for this upcharge if the suggested retail amount clearly printed on the display is less? Is San Andres Hardware struggling THAT badly? Maybe. I didn't feel like driving across town for a $3 savings (I needed to rent three components) so decided to just rent from here. The young man at the cash register wasn't super helpful, either - which is a shame when you see other local stores' staff committed to the customer. Nope, not here. The guy was too busy watching whatever was on TV to be bothered. He rung me up but was giving me one-word responses to the questions I had pertaining to the device. He was making Home Depot employees look like gods in comparison, which is sort of sad. I left the store so he could get back to watching television. Sure, it's a cute store with what appears to be a good selection - but the service and pricing aren't worth a return trip. Heed my advice and go to Home Depot instead. read more

You deserve better. This place is the worst hardware store in all of history. The clerk Papa is insulting and rude. I've been a general manager for retail and have held several roles in sales and service. I value good service, sometimes more than price or convenience. They don't honor their guarantee and they will mistreat you. My girlfriend got some key copies made. The gentleman said they were guaranteed. She got four keys copied. One set didn't work so I go in. I messed up and told him to fix a pair that didn't I need it, went back today with the pair that didn't work to get them fixed and the clerk told me I had to pay. The reason I posted this was because he had offered the guarantee on the copies. Granted I wasted 30 seconds of a his day yesterday, my mistake. When I went in earlier I didn't have my wallet, so I had to go home grab it and come back. At which point I gave him the opportunity to honor his guarantee, he said "Sirr why you worry about three dollar key, when you drive tirty TOUSAND dollar car!!?" Just like that. I dont mind broken English, being an immigrant and having struggled with the language myself, but his comment caught me completely off guard. That did it for me. I drive an old, used Sentra. I just happened to have dealer plate covers. I bought it used, I'm not balling like I will be someday lol. How rude! I told him that all four key copies were his work and he had offered the guarantee. He cut me off, said he was done, that I should go elsewhere and basically kicked me out. I love hardware stores to start with but this is my new favorite. I live in a 1950's remodel and somehow my doorknob needed new screws with larger heads or the door knob would fall apart. (Hard to explain.) So I took the old screws with me made my way to the right area when I was greeted by a young man that was friendly and polite. I described my dilemma and he quickly and efficiently found what I needed and made some suggestions of how to camouflage the heads of the screws, if necessary. They worked perfectly and I never even had to bother my landlord. I love supporting a family business and although my purchase was small, they treated me well and I will definitely return! Purchased paint stripper, but I didn't need it, so I brought it back. Tossed the receipt, unfortunately, but I thought I could just get store credit, which I would've been satisfied with. When I came in, the guy (who, when I called to complain later, turned out to be the owner) said he couldn't take it back because it was used. Fact: I had never even opened it. He proceeded to open the canister, point to some of the liquid that had gummed around the rim, and say, "Look, you used it." Professing that I hadn't used it, he replied, "I can't take it. You might have poisoned it and then I'd be in trouble." First, I'm offended that he insisted that the unopened canister was used. Second, I'm offended at his suggestion that I might have poisoned the paint stripper. And third, you're supposed to use paint stripper in a well-ventilated area because PAINT STRIPPER IS ALREADY POISON. Not coming back here and warning people to turn away because of the way I was treated by the owner himself. Wanted to like the place because it seemed cozy and local, but this was just outrageous. We needed lightbulbs in a bad way. Looked up hardware in Yelp and found this place. Friendly staff all said hi as we came in. Small store and small selection but so happy they still carried 'real' lightbulbs. You know the kind we all used growing up that don't have mercury in them? We were staying a couple of miles away and forgot to bring our own lightbulbs to swap out the curly cue bulbs in the hotel that give me migraines. They even had some bathroom big round bulbs that my Mom needed so she bought those too. Nice little neighborhood and good looking plants for sale. read more

I tried to support a local store and unfortunately this is not one of them..returned an item 10 minutes after buying it..I did not open it, just realized I did not need to spray my heat register since it was already white. "NO REFUNDS STORE CREDIT ONLY OR EXCHANGE" I did neither I gave it back to the clerk and told him I will never come back after explaining this is not a good way to earn the support of a neighbor and not to put the item back on the shelf to resell but to GIVE IT AWAY!! Baffled by how rude the owner is! Didn't bother to get up from his seat and take a break from eating his food when I asked for help. He saw me struggle looking for a particular screw for almost 10 minutes. In the meantime he helped 2 customers who came in after me. Then he screamed at me in front of other customers for giving him a card to pay for my purchase (the credit/debit card minimum amount sign was hidden under a bunch of crap sitting on the counter). Rude beyond words and horrible small business model in terms of customer service. Don't waste your time coming here. There are friendlier and more resourceful hardware stores around. Quite possibly the worst customer service I've ever experienced. The young male clerk there was as rude and insolent as he could possibly be. How he keeps his job is a mystery to me. DON'T BUY FROM THIS GUY. HERE IS WHY: For example, I bought a toilet plunder ($8.79 + tax) from San Andres Hardware (SAHW) and took it home to use it. It failed as the rubbber flexed and flopped over instead of being stiff enough to be plunged. I bought a replacement from Lowes. (&5.99 + tax) and took it home. Two punges later, flush. Returned to SAHW for refund with my Lowes plunger and receipt in hand , and clerk said no refunds on Sunday. Monday, I returned with receitp, Lowes plunger and its receipt, but the owner/manager said no refunds. He pointed to sign on counter covered with stuff. I said what about for defective stuff? He said no refunds even for defective products. I brought my Lowes plunger to compare and he tested his which failed in front of a customer. Still, he refused to refund for defective plunger. I told him I would use my credit card customer dispute resolution department to get a refund. He said go ahead. He violated rule #1: "The customer is king." He violated rule #4: Refund the sale of a defective products. He voilated CA law which requires a refund for the sale of unmerchanable products which fail the implied warranty of fitness for its purpose and implied warranty of merchanability (it is a saleable product. This guy will sell you a defective product, refuse to refund, blame the customer, and chase you out as if you were the bad guy. DON'T BUY FROM THIS GUY read more

I was at the San Andres Hardware today. I live in Montecito and planned to buy several bags of lawn mulch as I am replanting my lawns in preparation for El Nino. I always buy supplies there when I have business in that neighborhood. In the past I have always stopped in the store to tell them of my business in the neighbourhood and that I'll be back in 20 or 30 minutes to make my purchases. Well the old bearded clerk with broken English asked me for $2 for parking. I was so incensed that I can't imagine doing business with them in the future.
